As I write this letter, I’m in my office looking at three photos my daughter took of my beloved German Shepard, Bella, about six months before she passed. She was a smart dog, a great dog, a loving dog and an integral part of especially my older boys' lives. Since then, three new dogs have joined our crew.
I love my dogs, but for others there are all kinds of pets and for all of us no matter what kind, they offer a special kind of companionship. It can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
Even more importantly are our children.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment.
Now, I enjoy the incredible experience of seeing my children as adults out on their own, or in college and thankfully one remaining in the nest. The blessing is that each one is finding their purpose and place as they navigate their future. The interesting thing though in my case, is that we seem to add a new dog every time one of the kids moves out. I guess we like it busy.
Although kids are of infinite value, what kids and pets share are that they need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they are raised and who they become. This issue has much to cover, and we hope you enjoy it and who and what is featured in it. It includes stories on: teaching kids to save, father and sons building together, the one thing pet experts wish pet owners knew, and another Life Minded installment from Jen.
I’m always open to ideas, so please share. And as always, I’ll see you around the Lake!

According to a December 13, 2022 report by Urban Institute, “What Can Policymakers Do to Help Young Adults Cope with Debt?”, 20% of young adults in the US aged 18 to 24 have debt in collections. Debt at this stage of young adults’ lives can be especially difficult to manage not only because of their lack of experience but also due to limited incomes and higher interest rates.
So educating kids on how to use credit cards responsibly is crucial to their future financial well-being. The good news is that those who learn and develop good saving habits early in life are more prepared to deal with what lies ahead and develop into financially responsible adults.
THE YOUNGER SET
Begin teaching your child the concept of money, including the values of coins, from the ages of 4 to 6. During this time, keep it simple. Allow your child to earn money to save in a piggy bank for small chores.
IT’S ALL ELEMENTARY
By the time your child is 7, an allowance is essential to learning about money and developing good habits. Familiarize your kids with banking. Open a savings account, so they can watch their money grow. Also, help them set achievable goals, such as saving for a new toy or putting away for holiday gifts.
HOW TO TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT MONEY AT EVERY AGE
ARTICLEBY
KIMBERLY BLAKERKeep in mind, many banks charge service fees unless a minimum balance is kept, and frequent trips to the bank may be impossible. As an alternative, set up your own ‘family bank.’ Give your child a spare checkbook ledger or savings passbook. Then copy blank savings deposit and withdrawal slips from your bank for your kids to use. Require them to fill out the slips and log transactions in the ledger. Also, give your kids monthly interest for their savings so they can experience the immediate reward of saving money.
Designer clothing, entertainment, and car expenses are the most significant areas of teen spending. Some teens also put away for college. But few are prepared for the adult world, says developmental psychologist Nancy J. Cobb in Adolescence: Continuity, Change, and Diversity. That’s because most teens aren’t primed for the responsibility of paying for food, housing, and health care costs.
Those teens involved with the family budget and who contribute to family expenses learn a valuable lesson. Opting to show teens the spending categories in which they have a direct impact on family expenses is helpful. Also, agree on a reasonable amount in which your teens can contribute to help cover those expenses. It’ll go a long way toward preparing adolescents for adulthood.
Whether teens contribute or not, their working hours should be limited to no more than 10 to 15 per week. According to Cobb, researchers have found adolescents who work, especially 20 or more hours per week, are not as engaged in school as their nonworking peers. Based on various studies, this shortchanges students in the long term. If you restrict your teens’ working hours to ensure success in school, it’s good to provide an increased allowance for clothing and personal needs. You can then help your teens budget their money.
Still, there are many ways teens can learn the value of money and develop good habits. In fact, limiting teens’ funds may force them to be more selective and make wiser financial decisions.
Help your child develop good saving and spending habits in the following ways.
Allow your kids to make some of their own spending decisions. Place reasonable limits. Then offer appropriate guidance while giving your kids opportunities to learn from their mistakes.
Don’t loan your kids money every time they want it. But do offer occasional opportunities for them to learn the costs of borrowing and the experience of repaying the loan. When contemplating whether to give your child a loan and how much, there are several considerations. What’s the purpose of the loan and their ability to repay the loan within a reasonable time? Also, how have they handled repayment in the past?
Be sure to charge interest on loans, so kids learn the cost of borrowing. Realize, regardless of how financially savvy we raise our kids to be, borrowing does have its place. At the very least, it’s often necessary or practical for acquiring a college education, reliable transportation, and a home. These can be wise investments, even when borrowing is needed.
Teach your child how to set financial goals. By the teen years, these may include those big-ticket items just mentioned. And don’t overlook the importance of short-term goals, which offer your kids a feeling of accomplishment and a boost in self-esteem.
Require your child to put at least 10% of each paycheck, or allowance, into savings. It’ll be much easier to adhere to as an adult if practiced during childhood and teen years.
Don’t be totally secretive about family finances. Kids have few opportunities to see and experience the financial side of the adult world. This doesn’t mean you need, or even should, disclose everything. But it’s easier for kids to understand if they can see it in concrete terms. Develop a detailed household budget. Then explain it so your adolescent can see how your family spends and why.
Discuss the different ways in which you save and invest your own money. Then explain how these different plans work. Point out both the benefits and the risks.
Have your kids visit http://www.themint.org/ They’ll learn about money, goal setting, saving, investing, and more.
“Also, give your kids monthly interest for their savings so they can experience the immediate reward of saving money.”

Hanging on the wall at the Black Dog Homes office is a framed photo of a black lab named Marley. “We call him our CEO,” laughs owner Dan Vanderheyden. “Marley was not only the inspiration behind the Black Dog Homes name but was a big influence in how we decided we wanted to position ourselves as a company.” Black Dog Homes is a luxury home builder and remodeler run by Dan and his two sons, Nick, the General Manager, and Ben, head of Sales and Marketing. Based in Wayzata, the award-winning organization has garnered industry recognition in recent years including three Dream Homes that were featured in the Parade of Homes in 2022,
2021, and 2018. Marley came to the family through Helping Paws, an organization that provides assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities, veterans, and first responders.
“Growing up, our mom trained black labs for Helping Paws,” explains Ben. “It was funny…the dogs were obviously food motivated, so I’d be eating cereal, getting ready for high school at Wayzata and Marley would just be flipping the light switch on and off, hoping to get a treat. It is pretty amazing how smart these service dogs are and how skilled they become after they graduate from the Helping Paws program.”
Alyssa Golob, Executive Director at Helping Paws, shares, “From when Dan and his family first trained Marley, we’ve created an amazing partnership with Black Dog Homes. We look at many corporate sponsors and want to work with companies who give back and have that philanthropic spirit. I’ve gotten to know the family, and they’re certainly more than just a company that builds gorgeous homes. We love everything they stand for and are proud of our partnership.”
It’s easy to see the values Black Dog Homes carries with them extend to everyone, from their customers and their team to the entire community. Dan shares,“As we reflected on the industry, we know remodeling and building homes can be very stressful. We wanted to change that. We wanted it to be a fun and relaxed experience. The values, relationship, and lessons learned from Marley translate to the type of experience and relationship we build with our customers and how we show up each day for our clients.”
Nick adds, “For us, it’s not a transactional relationship. We go the extra mile to create lifelong relationships rooted in transparency and trust. It’s not uncommon as a customer of Black Dog Homes for your children to receive Christmas gifts from the company, for us to be at a Timberwolves game, or to be out to dinner with our customers. It’s a big reason why we love what we do.”
“The majority of our business has come directly from our personal networks and referrals,” reflects Ben. “As a company, we are fortunate to have incredible clients that trust us to partner with them on some very large projects.”
Not only do customers return because of the beautiful work Black Dog Homes does to
make their home vision a reality, but the three know the critical piece of the puzzle for clients is transparency.
Nick says, “As a transparency-focused builder, we spend significant efforts throughout the design phase to maximize our customers’ investment and knowledge of the available options. It’s a team effort where we devote time to take them on the journey with us and show them everything we see. A big part of that is with finances. From the scope of the work to the individual bids we get from our subcontractors, we use an anytime, anywhere, digital platform to share all the project and financial information with our customers in real-time. So, there are no surprises at the end of a project with extra charges or changes.”
“Over the last decade, our focus has been on craftsmanship, quality, and custom work,” says Dan. “Everything we build is unique. We’ve prided ourselves along the journey to be great listeners and to embrace our customer’s vision, whatever that is, improving the space that they live in to create the quality of life they have with their family and love their home.”
Black Dog Homes is on the Midwest Home Luxury Tour in late July, showcasing a stunning, modern Tudor project in Minnetrista. A true labor of love, the home is a collaboration between Black Dog Homes, Haus of Rowe Interiors, Windmiller Design Studio, and the homeowners, resulting in a modern masterpiece and perfect representation of Black Dog’s building approach and passion for bringing visions to life.

“For us, it’s not a transactional relationship. We go the extra mile to create lifelong relationships rooted in transparency and trust.”
Our household is home to three kids, four if you count the dog which we do and he is the hands down favorite since
he didn’t need orthodontia. Two of these ‘children’ are adults on paper but are still on our cell phone plan and eat all of our food so…it’s still safe to claim them as DEPENDENTS. It’s true you are a different parent to the first child than you are to the last because you are older and wiser but mostly older and way more tired.
I recall a time when our youngest was three and was bringing me to the brink of insanity screaming from his car seat on a long road trip and I threw him a sucker. When I called my mother to lament, she said, “You probably never would have let the others have a sucker at that age.” And this was absolutely true but by that point I also would have let him drive the car if he would just stop screaming. Our third child has enjoyed a lifetime of paths cut by an older sister and those same paths scorched and worn smooth by an older brother. He is the baby of the family and thereby lives by a completely different set of rules.
So with this in mind, we recently discovered that he had been watching “Too Hot To Handle” on Netflix much to our dismay. If you are not familiar with this show, and I was not, it is a reality show centered on single people trapped on an island competing for a chance to win $100,000 all while wearing swimsuits. This is not my type of programming but it must appeal to someone because they are already on their fourth season. It is definitely not something I was
excited for my 8th grader to watch and he was already on episode nine by the time we asked him about it.
And then he flatly denied it.
Now here is where it does NOT pay to be the third child. Because we are tired but smarter than we were ten years ago and so we started in on our practiced lecture series on making good media choices, the dangers of lying, positive ways to use time, etc.
But that youngest, he stands his ground and decides to do the only thing that comes naturally to all children. He blamed it on his brother.
But then the older brother also vehemently denies it and is offended we would even suggest it was him. So he suggests it could be his sister.
With the full acknowledgement that all modern kids have both good and bad content at their fingertips at any moment we are almost ready to give up this ridiculous and unnecessary manhunt when we stumble upon a new piece of evidence.
We uncover that it has only been viewed in the kitchen. Which is odd. We rarely use the television in the kitchen these days with everyone coming and going. Why would anyone watch that
particular show but only in the kitchen. This is when my husband says, “Wait, wait, wait. I think it’s the dog.”
The dog. It’s the dog.
When we leave our house, we always turn on something for the dog to watch. I don’t know how this habit started but I know that it is part of the routine of our family as much as filling the water bowl and it makes all of us feel better knowing he has a bit of company. Our dog has watched “Madam Secretary” in its entirety. He has watched numerous shows about home improvement. He has watched “The Secret Life of Pets” for obvious reasons. And one day my husband, in a rush to leave had just pressed play on the very first thing that popped up and this is how we realize that our Cavapoo had been diligently working his way through season four of “Too Hot To Handle.”
If it’s not the kids, it’s the dog. There is never a dull moment and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Our dog is only six years old but we are going to let go of managing his viewing habits. He is almost at the end where he will find out who will win the money. The youngest really does get to live with no rules whatsoever.

Have you ever noticed that pet owners can talk “forever” to other pet owners? They seem to roll from one topic into the next often without even coming up for air. Perhaps it’s because they sense automatic acceptance with the other person as though they are “on the same page” when sharing stories regarding each of their pet’s behavior.
What also seems to captivate all dog owners’ interests is tips on finding a good veterinarian and a dog groomer at a more reasonable rate. Pet photographers, dog trainers, and anything related to vacation lodging for their beloved dog will make a fellow dog owner’s ears go up!
As a lifelong pet owner, I am always up for a bit of info on how to improve the lives of our furry family members. So, I decided to pose just one question to three local pet experts, hoping to pass along some helpful tips for our readers. The question was, “What is the one thing you wished pet owners knew?”
“All breeds tend to have particular characteristics that will or will not be a good fit for a family. If researched in advance, long-term bonding can guarantee a happier home from day one.”
We ask three pet experts this question. Here’s what they had to say.
I began by reaching out to Sara Spevacek, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer at Adventure is Barking, to see what she wished pet owners knew. Sara’s response wasn’t surprising, but if followed, it could save you a good deal of time. “It all centers around consistency in the training. If two people work with one dog, the commands must be the same from each human parent. Intentional follow-through and patience will get you through the hardest parts. Also, whenever possible, start your training early with any new dog you bring into the house!” adventureisbarking.com
Next, I posed the same question to Bethann Gondeck, Director and Founder at Grey Face Rescue. Bethann finds good homes and sometimes special medical help for senior dogs who have been uprooted from the only home they’ve ever known. Bethann’s response to my question was, “Breed knowledge!” Often, animals are surrendered to shelters or rescues simply because of a family’s schedule or because their dogs’ specific needs are unmet. This is often due to an initial lack of knowledge of their breed. All breeds tend to have particular characteristics that will or will not be a good fit for a family. If researched in advance, long-term bonding can guarantee a happier home from day one.
“Breeds with high energy MUST be exercised daily. It could be a good fit if the human parent also enjoys running or vigorous walking.” Bethann continues, “If a high-energy pet is simply kept in a room all day without exercise,
you may come home to messes on the floor or, even worse, torn up shoes and even a carpet.” greyfacerescue.org
Last but far from least, I wanted to talk to Jean SteltenBeuning at Top Dog Country Club in New Germany regarding tips on boarding our dogs. Again, I asked, “What is the one thing you wished pet owners knew?”
Jean says, “I would love dog parents to know that much of a dog’s separation anxiety is created by the owner(s). They may not realize that their dog senses their mood and mirrors it back.”
Jean continues, “In a dog’s mind, if its owner is stressed, something must be wrong. Once this happens, they become anxious. A dog’s sense of smell is incredibly acute; it’s up to 10,000 times more sensitive than ours. When we are stressed, we give off pheromones that our dogs detect. Once the anxious parent(s) leaves our building, their dog relaxes immediately. Staying calm, cool, and collected, along with a big hug and an upbeat tone in your voice as you say, “See you soon!” makes all the difference in the world. Your positive demeanor tells them everything is okay, allowing your dog to have the time of his life on his vacation!” topdogcountryclub.com
As a photojournalist and pet photographer, I would like to answer the same question. I wish pet owners would arrange to have a very special image taken of their beloved pet before they pass. I often hear, “I wish I would have thought about that before…..” rebeccahahnphotography.com
HOW KIDS CAN TAKE THEIR PASSIONS AND GIFTS AND TURN THEM INTO SO MUCH MORE
ARTICLE BY KENDRA JOHNSON“It takes a village to raise a child” is a sentiment we’re all familiar with, and while it may be a cliche, it’s also true. Helping children discover their passions and guiding them to adulthood is no easy feat, which is why having a community to rely on is so important.
Two of those communities, Bach to Rock, a modern music school in the Minneapolis market for five years, and Mathnasium, a math learning center in Minnetonka, support children on their path to discovering themselves through music and math programs. They explore how kids can take their passions and gifts and turn them into so much more.
Bach to Rock is a growing franchise organization based out of Bethesda, Maryland. Judy Shoulak and her son, Jake Shoulak opened their Plymouth Bach to Rock School in 2018, Coon Rapids in 2022, and are excited to open in Minnetonka this August. Judy and Jake’s mission is to impact lives through music. Their schools offer music lessons to all ages starting at eight months old.
One-on-one lesson at Mathnasium
With classes ranging from guitar and piano to voice lessons and DJing, Bach to Rock is a place for kids to feel safe, have fun and discover a passion for music. According to Judy, it’s also a place for kids to grow their confidence.
Aidan Kulseith was just 10 years old when he joined Bach to Rock. He started out just learning piano but added voice lessons soon after. Aidan quickly joined a band and almost immediately started performing at events. Now at 14 years old, Aidan’s band, Jade, has won Bach to Rock’s “Battle of the Bands” event for the second year in a row.
“Aidan is talented and passionate about performing at his best! When combined with amazing instructors, opportunities to perform, and unconditional parental support, the sky’s the limit,” Judy says.
Similarly, Mathnasium of Minnetonka is a place for kids to receive support in all things math-related. Some kids find themselves falling behind in math classes, while others discover a gift and want to pursue opportunities in the math field.
Mathnasium “meets every student where they are,” Owner and Director Sri Ganti says.
Mathnasium tailors lessons to each child’s specific needs and offers one-on-one instruction to ensure every child receives proper support and instruction.
Sri says one of the best parts about working with kids is seeing their confidence levels grow. She recalls one student who was so anxious when he first joined Mathnasium that he would crawl under his desk. With consistent, sustained efforts, his confidence grew, and he made significant strides outside of math as well. “He was able to join honors classes and reach goals in other areas of his life too,” Sri says.
Both Judy Shoulak and Sri Ganti have seen the impact a supportive community can have on young children looking to gain confidence and pursue a passion. Being the one offering the support is a humbling and unforgettable experience. On the flip side, receiving support from parents and community members is something that forever changed Isabel and Caroline Bercaw’s lives.
Co-founders of Da Bomb, Isabel and Caroline became interested in bath bombs when they were just 10 and 11 years old. With support from their parents and the community, the girls were able to grow their passion into a business that now sells bath bombs to retailers like Target and Ulta Beauty.
“Without the support of our parents, it’s no secret the business would not be what it is today. But the way they taught us how to deal with problems, it really benefited us and made us better people in general,” says Isabel, 22.
As a result of being so young, Isabel and Caroline say they were occasionally overlooked or not taken seriously
as business owners. But with encouragement from the people around them, the girls have become successful entrepreneurs who are using their platform to provide clean drinking water to communities in Africa through The Water Project.
When asked if they had any advice for children wanting to pursue a passion and gain confidence along the way, Caroline, 21, offers, “Don’t wait until you think the moment will be right. Just start. Whether that’s something small or taking a big step. Start with something and work your way up from there.”
“Both Judy Shoulak and Sri Ganti have seen the impact a supportive community can have on young children looking to gain confidence and pursue a passion. Being the one offering the support is a humbling and unforgettable experience.”

Opening its doors in March, SIX MN Boutique is all about empowering and inspiring women and busy moms. In fact, using “Six” in the name is a tribute to store owners Jill and Bri’s children—six between the two of them. “We started this business in Jill’s house and have incorporated the kids ever since,” says Bri. “It has really been a family process—from the steaming, tagging, and even painting the brick and mortar store.”
Having their families involved from the start has allowed the duo to connect on a personal level with their customer base, and their own children have seen what it takes to make a business flourish. “Being a mom has always been our number one, but we have always dreamed of owning our own boutique, so now getting to do it alongside our children, makes it all that much more special. Our kids tell us almost daily how proud they are of us,” says Jill.
“We love what we do and we love coming to work every day because it allows us to make new connections and build great relationships. Every customer that walks in
the door should feel valued and appreciated. It is why we do what we do.” Jill and Bri focus on personal styling and offer by appointment shopping to meet the needs of any client, helping her find pieces that will guarantee all of the compliments. “We offer seasonless, elevated essentials that create a strong foundation for a killer wardrobe. We also like to introduce new brands that customers might not find in Minnesota,” says Bri. “Fabrics and ease are both huge for us. We want the pieces we select to be functional, timeless, comfortable and high quality.”
Denim, tanks, tees, athleisure, outerwear, and sneakers are the SIX core categories that they build their boutique on. Jill and Bri are so grateful to be in the area serving customers and helping women feel confident and empowered in the clothes they wear. “The feedback on our shop has been so great,” says Bri. “We will truly go above and beyond for our customers,” says Jill.

It’s always been a dream of Molly McMahon to come back to her hometown and open her own orthodontic practice. That dream came true this summer with the grand opening of Anchored Orthodontics in the heart of Minnetonka. “I grew up on the Excelsior side of Lake Minnetonka and always wanted to come back close to home, raise my family here, and be able to give back to the community I grew up in,” says Dr. McMahon.
Dr. Molly McMahon offers boutique-style orthodontic care at Anchored Orthodontics, allowing for more one-on-one time with each patient. “I wanted to create an environment where patients see the same doctor every time. Where I can get to know the patients really well, spend more time with them, and provide excellent continuity of high-quality care,” says Dr. McMahon. “There is time to answer all your questions and concerns. You get to be heard. If there’s something you want or don’t want, I will listen and discuss treatment plan options, but at the end of the day, it’s your body, and you get to be the decision maker.”
For your first appointment, you’ll receive a full comprehensive orthodontic exam, complimentary records, which includes x-rays and digital impressions if needed, and a proposed treatment plan including the financial commitment and insurance coverage.
“One of the first things you notice about someone is their smile,” says Dr. McMahon. “I love being able to help my patients transform their lives, from their confidence to the function of their teeth. Seeing the huge impact it has on my patients is why I love what I do.”

Store owners Kelly Harrington and Molly Kleiman have been involved in retail since they were teenagers and were excited to open up Clubhouse 366 together. “We both have owned our own stores and have found we are much better together,” says Kelly.
With bright and fun clothes, customers can imagine themselves in the tropical location of their choice when they walk in the door. “We want our customers to feel like they are on vacation when they walk into the store. Whether that is a small boutique in St. Tropez or South Carolina,” says Kelly. Additionally, customers can expect to find interesting and different brands in the store. “We are trying to bring in brands that you are unlikely to find in Minnesota or Excelsior,” says Kelly. “We want our customers to feel special when they wear the clothes from Clubhouse 366. You do not want to see a dress you just bought on other people wherever you go.”
Both Kelly and Molly bring their unique spin to the business, and the customers benefit. “Molly and I have very different styles,” says Kelly. “She tends to lean more towards classics like Veronica Beard and Rag and Bone, while I lean more towards funky fun styles with a bit more flair, and I love to accessorize. We are way better together than we ever were separately!”
Customers can expect to find resort wear, bathing suits, accessories, and jewelry. Check out clubhouse366.com for more information, and take the time to shop in-store!
