LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Women's Issue
I don't know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women who make life richer and more beautiful. Wives, mothers, and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives. Editors, too (you're amazing, Paige!)
And, of course, with Mother's Day this month, all eyes are on moms who have made an indelible impact on us. It's the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors doing extraordinary things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
A day doesn't go by when I don't think of my mom. Most times, it's a beautiful memory that brings a warm smile and tear in my eye. Occasionally, it will be a thought of not being a thoughtful son. No matter what, though, Mom loves us unconditionally.
In this issue, we highlight several amazing women who give to their families and community and accomplish incredible things.
They are movers and shakers, builders, and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can't be seen or understood any other way.
Also, congratulations to Betsy Rossman and Rachael Schroeder who were selected by @grossepointecitylifestyle followers as respective business owners making an impact. Betsy is the owner of The Lon Next Door Salon and Spa. Rachael is the owner of Rhythm & Blue Juice Company.
I hope you'll take a few minutes and call mom and get the kids on, also. It only takes a minute to brighten someone's day and remind them how much you love them.
Please follow us @grossepointecitylifestyle, check out our digital platform, and become a digital subscriber at citylifestyle.com. Our followers make a difference in the community as we listen to feedback and supply dynamic lifestyle information.
Happy Mother's Day!

TWO WOMEN AND A FORD
This Father’s Day, June 18, hundreds of car lovers will stroll the meadow for EyesOn Design at Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, admiring 230 of the finest buffed, polished and chromed cars ever designed.
But to pull off the show, the major fundraiser for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology which works with the visually impaired takes hundreds of volunteers.
On that Sunday, as all those cars are positioned in front of Edsel and Eleanor Ford’s former home, a handful of volunteers will manage the elegant Private Eyes champagne brunch under a large tent at the rear of the mansion, overlooking Lake St. Clair.
The longtime coordinators of that event are Ellen Chapin of Grosse Pointe Park and Darlene Sulad of Grosse Pointe Farms.

The two friends say they are happy to work with others involved with the DIO’s Friends of Vision who put on the brunch as well as providing a signature social event for the car show, which is ranked as one of the top five car shows in the country by USA Today.
“It’s an honor to be involved with this. And with the tent and the location and the lake, it’s absolutely the most beautiful place you could come up with,” said Sulad.
Chapin agreed.
“Last year, we hosted 300 people, from the show sponsors and car owners to the car designers and judges, their families and children. It was a very diverse group,” said Chapin.
“And it’s quite interesting to meet the people and see familiar faces because we’ve been doing it for so long,” she said.
Sulad said it has also been a chance to give back.
When a tornado struck the Grosse Pointes years ago and damaged the roof of her home, one of the first people on the scene to help was her neighbor, Dr. Philip Hessburg, the medical director of the DIO. Coincidentally, Sulad’s mother was also his patient at the time.
“That’s when I got involved,” said Sulad, who then met Chapin at a Friends of Vision event.
In addition to everything else, she and Chapin work with the Ford House to choose the catered menu and arrange for the table decorations and centerpieces.
ARTICLE BY ROBERT MUSIAL“We make sure there are enough tables and that we don’t run out of food,” laughed Sulad, who said the table flowers come from Detroit’s Eastern Market and even the gardens of other volunteers.
Last year, they scrambled as the white tablecloths arrived only 10 minutes before the start of the brunch.
“Whenever there’s a problem like that, we’re there to make sure it all runs smoothly,” said Chapin.
On the day of the brunch, they also check in the guests who have pre-registered for the event.
“And if they like, we hand them mimosas as they enter. We want to make it a lovely event on the lake,” she said.
Reservations are required for the Private Eyes brunch at the EyesOn Design show. Tickets are $95 a person, $35 for children under 10. The brunch includes the $35 admission to the car show. Visit eyesondesign.org or call (313) 824-4710 for more info.

“LAST YEAR, WE HOSTED 300 PEOPLE, FROM THE SHOW SPONSORS AND CAR OWNERS TO THE CAR DESIGNERS AND JUDGES, THEIR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN. IT WAS A VERY DIVERSE GROUP.”

Co-Chairs on a Mission
THE JOYS AND REWARDS OF GIVING BACK
The 55th Annual Grosse Pointe Academy Action Auction 2023 is on May 13. It's a great way to unite as a community and participate in a silent and live auction while enjoying cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, dinner, and an after-party. All proceeds from the evening go to support the Academy's mission to nurture, challenge, and inspire its students.

Of course, pulling off a successful event takes a lot of effort, and the 2023 Action Auction co-chairs - Powell and Greg Corbett, Alexis, and Jed Elley, and Julie and Joe Kaiser - are leading the way.
Here, we learn more about the women who are selflessly volunteering their time to give back:
HOW MANY EVENTS HAVE YOU CO-CHAIRED?
Powell Corbett: In addition to this one, I have co-chaired these two events:
• The Grosse Pointe Classic to benefit the renovation of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Grosse Pointe Beaumont.
• The Tau Beta Fall Market 2022 raises funds for The Children's Center of Detroit and the other charities they chose for their yearly grants.
Julie Kaiser: I have been lucky to co-chair three events.
Alexis Elley: The last large event I co-chaired was the Holley Ear Institute Celebrate America party in July 2013. It's been ten years - I guess I was due for another.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CO-CHAIRING AN EVENT?
PC: As Mattie Stepanek [the late peace advocate and motivational speaker] once said, "Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved."
JK: I'm grateful for the opportunity to co-chair events that support growth and expansion in the lives of others. It's an honor and a blessing.
AE: Having a co-chair for large events is extremely beneficial. Having a confidant to bounce ideas off of, share the workload, and navigate obstacles is terrific.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A CO-CHAIR?
PC: I love co-chairing events with close friends. I love learning and discovering new strengths within myself and my fantastic co-chairs along the journey. Having these co-chairs for The Grosse Pointe Academy Auction has also been very helpful so that if one of us is traveling or unable to attend a meeting, we can lean on each other. Even while working in challenging situations, we find ways to laugh a lot. We love working for such good causes together.
JK: My favorite part about being a co-chair is the excitement and energy that goes into giving. I love to see the support and am humbled by the generosity of others. We have a great community here, and the supporters have been beyond generous.
AE: My favorite part of being a co-chair is spending time with two women that I really love and admire. I also love seeing another side of how their brains work separate from being mothers, wives and friends.
WHAT VALUABLE LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED AS A CO-CHAIR?
PC: I have learned that you truly need to carve out a lot of time of the year and/or a block of months that the event needs. It's also very important to ask for help when needed because the many people who have performed the roles before having a wealth of knowledge and are usually happy to help. Also, lean on the support teams and other committees to help with some of the
decisions and tasks. Otherwise, it can get overwhelming. I have also made some great new friendships by learning to ask for help and reach out.
JK: One of the many valuable lessons I've learned so far is not to ask for help. I've found that most people want to give to the best of their ability, and it never hurts to ask.
AE: A valuable lesson that I've learned is that I hate budgets and inflation is disheartening - LOL - but all jokes aside, it's important to have goals and guidelines, to listen and think before voicing your opinion (for the most part) and being open to alternate solutions.
WHAT SHOULD YOU ALWAYS DO AS A CO-CHAIR?
PC: You should always be grateful - grateful for peoples' support in the many ways it can be possible, whether it's a donation of time, ideas, monetary donations, items donated, services donated, or even introductions to others who can help as well! I am always blown away by how generous people are for such great causes. I'm grateful for working with these events and seeing how much people are willing to help.
JK: You should always keep an open mind and be grateful to the people involved.
AE: Communication is key when co-chairing an event. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and should tap into being on the same page creates a seamless and enjoyable experience. Also, when chairing or co-chairing any event, always be gracious and grateful for any donation, whether big or small.
WHAT SHOULD YOU NEVER DO AS A CO-CHAIR?
PC: You should never take anyone's time and support for granted.
JK: "Never" is hard for me… well, because you never know. But I do believe you should never take others for granted.
AE: You never expect anything when it comes to charity.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR CURRENT CO-CHAIRING EVENT?
PC: Fun and interesting fact - Alexis Elley and I went to The Grosse Pointe Academy together. I'm an alumnus of the school, a current parent, and I also serve on the Board of Trustees. The auction is the largest fundraiser of the year for the school. It is a rocking party, an awesome large silent auction, and a fabulous live auction! The GPA and this event are very near and dear to my heart.
JK: I'm so excited to support the school and enrich the future of the children.
AE: The Grosse Pointe Academy 55th Action Auction, which, being an alumnus of the school and current parent, is an event near and dear to my heart as well.

WOMEN OF GROSSE POINTE
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREAS BROWNE & ROBERT BRUCELADIES MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Gabrielle Reilly
designer, owner of Flowers by Gabrielle
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL AND/OR VOLUNTEER?
I opened my flower and gift shop in 2001 and have been fortunate to be able to do what I love every day. I’m grateful and honored to have the privilege to enhance the important events and milestones in people’s lives through floristry.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?
I have three. One is a technique called eco-printing with fresh flower blooms and foliage on paper and fabric. Another is doing hand-stitched embroidery on second-hand clothing. I sometimes combine the two and do hand-stitching on my eco-printed pieces. I’ve also taken up gardening and I’m obsessed!
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE’S MOTTO?
“Turn all obstacles into stepping stones.” I’ve taken lessons from all of the challenges I’ve faced and gained strength from and through them. I’ve learned that the challenges that seem so devastating at first often become our greatest gifts.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING UP IN SOCIETY TODAY?
Following your passions will always lead you toward living a life you love. And, turn off the screens and tune in to nature – that’s where you’ll find peace, comfort, and joy.

WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL AND/ OR VOLUNTEER?
A journalist by training, I’m co-owner of a custom publishing company that produces magazines, history books and marketing materials for corporate and nonprofit clients. I also teach in the Journalism Department at Wayne State University.
I’m currently in my second term serving as mayor of the City of Grosse Pointe. It was a love of my community that spurred me to apply for an open city council position in 2016. I was elected to the seat in 2017 and became mayor in 2019. It’s an honor to be entrusted with steering a community of this caliber.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?
I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, sailing with my husband and reading novels.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING UP IN SOCIETY TODAY?
Get involved in your community. Each voice matters, and every positive contribution - no matter how small - can make a difference in creating safe, vibrant places to live, learn, work and play.
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL AND/ OR VOLUNTEER?
Firstly, I am a wife and a mother to three beautiful girls which makes me the household CEO. Also, I’m a self-employed small business owner focused on property management as well as a newly elected Trustee on the Grosse Pointe School Board. In addition, I have been on the committee for Young Life-Grosse Pointe for the past seven years.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?
My favorite hobby is spending time with my family. We enjoy traveling, skiing, hiking, boating, going on walks or just sitting by a campfire. I have a newfound love for pickleball and play a few times a week.
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE’S MOTTO?
“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” Acts 20:24
What advice would you give young people growing up in society today? Be purposeful with your time and energy. Live your life in a way that is compassionate and generous. Be good forgivers of each other in all circumstances. Above all, love those around you with all your heart, because love binds everything together in harmony. Pursue a relationship with Christ.
Volunteer
Be purposeful with your time and energy. Live your life in a way that is compassionate and generous.

WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL AND/OR VOLUNTEER?
I’m currently enjoying my first year as publisher of the Grosse Pointe News, after serving as the vice president of strategy and development and vice president. I am so proud of our team – we were just named Newspaper of the Year for the second straight year.
As far as volunteering, I recently accepted a board position at the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce, and I do as much as I can for my children’s schools. I absolutely love having my finger on the pulse of this remarkable community. It’s such a wonderful place to live.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?
As luck would have it, my job encompasses many of my hobbies. I love to tinker with anything creative, but especially writing, sports, advertising and anything house and home related. With four children, my hobbies are also their hobbies which include hockey, baseball, tennis, swimming, basketball and essentially any sport they are playing at the moment. Someday, when they are a bit older, I have dreams of playing competitive tennis again.
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE’S MOTTO?
I don’t have a motto per se, but a few of the things I throw at my kids is “Always be the hardest worker” and versions of “Toughen up.” Life is rough and we are lucky that our problems are generally very small.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING UP IN SOCIETY TODAY?
Same advice I give my own children. Be tough and work hard and you will stand out. Also, I think what’s very important right now is that nobody wants to hear complaining. Be the one who solves the problems, not just calls out the problems.
Life is great – soak up all the good things. Anything else, do what you can to make things better. CONTINUED >
Cotton
Co-owner of Corner Studio, Corner Studio Pilates and Lagree and Corner Active & Leisure
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL?
I truly love working and living in this community. The health and wellness world is not where I started professionally (I’m an attorney and practiced law in New Jersey) but it’s a world I feel so passionate about. Both of my parents died from heart attacks without the traditional markers and looking back on it, I know they should have made their health more of a priority and taken simple preventative measures so that they could have lived longer.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?
My favorite hobby is playing tennis. I grew up playing the violin, but also softball, lacrosse and tennis. I decided to get into tennis again after I had my kids about 12 years ago. It was a way to get into shape and do something fun and athletic again. It makes me smile. I’m also helping the Grosse Pointe South Girls JV team this spring.
Manager/buyer for Coreander’s Children’s Bookshoppe
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL?
I worked in schools teaching and leading education for 23 years and now I’m fortunate to use my experience and training to help encourage reading. Supporting the love of reading requires listening to the reader, helping identify what books might be of interest and the best fit, seeing the opportunity for growth in the genre, and for some readers finding the best balance between text and graphics.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING UP IN SOCIETY TODAY?
My mother was an amazing example of a working woman and mom, and she modeled for me how I could do both successfully. What has changed though is the image of a woman/mother due to the ever-growing and shifting world of social media. Social media promotes perfection and the “do it all” mentality while offering as many pages stating women should encourage self-care in their lives. I continue to work on a solution, but hope that I’m providing a good example for my children.
Brigitte Rist
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL AND/OR VOLUNTEER?
I’m a hairdresser and owner of the salon, Chez LouLou. I hold a B.A. in international studies and French from Wayne State University and I have lived in France, where I completed an intensive program in hairdressing. This love of styling also allows me to cut and style hair pieces and wigs for women going through chemotherapy, alopecia and other scalp conditions. I enjoy helping women.
I’m also the creator of the haircare and cosmetic line, MANON. These products are free of parabens, sodium chloride and sulfates.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?
Traveling abroad, cooking, and baking. I’m also a classical music enthusiast.
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE’S MOTTO?
Do what you love, love what you do.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING UP IN SOCIETY TODAY?
Work hard, stay focused and never give up on your dreams.
Brynn Jezdimir
Salon owner and product line creator Orthodontic Specialist
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A PROFESSIONAL?
I’m an orthodontist specialist. I focus on safe movements of teeth and the guidance of dental, jaw, and facial development for patients of all ages.

As a part-owner of LakePointe Orthodontics, I am involved in many aspects of managing a practice, leading a team of twelve, and finding ways to support our community.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?
Yoga is my absolute favorite way to treat myself to quiet and restorative time. I completed instructor training with a Christ-centered yoga program a couple of summers ago to further my practice and to be able to help others grow and find healing on their mats.
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE’S MOTTO?
Love and see the best within others!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE GROWING UP IN SOCIETY TODAY?
Look within yourself and to God for guidance in your life. Surround yourself with people whom you want to be more like and find a mentor years ahead of you who can be a source of wisdom and support.

Memorable ways to celebrate the mother figure in your life

Make an Impact for Mom
The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Invite Her To High Tea
Whether you make the brews and treats yourself or head out to an official tea house, Mom will love sipping her beverage out of fancy china and snacking on tea sandwiches.
Pick Your Own Fruit
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
Book Her a Weekend Away
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Complete a Jigsaw Puzzle
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
Take a Flower Arranging Class
Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
