In 2022, drowning was the most common cause of death in children ages one to four in Arizona. There were more than 140 drowning incidents reported in Maricopa County in 2022, 68 of those were young children.
That is where valley resident Mikaela Jungers comes in. Originally from Southern California, the now Gilbert resident wanted to share her love of water with her family, but also wanted to make sure her children were practicing safety.
Kids in the Water is an online resource where parents can find free water safety tips
and ideas on how to make water time more enjoyable. “Our online course “Teach Your Toddler to Swim” was made for parents to learn the necessary steps to teach their own children how to swim,” says Jungers. “The course can also be used for kids who have taken lessons but need refreshers or for kids who are just beginning their experience of learning how to swim.”
Kids in the Water will hit their one-year anniversary this Spring, and Jungers shares it has been life-changing for her and her clients.
“In our short one year we’ve helped parents and grandparents gain the confidence they need to be a part of educating toddlers on pool and water safety and how to swim.”
If you are interested in learning more about Kids in the Water and the course they offer, you can find them on Facebook and Instagram @kidsinthewater. On the website, www.kidsinthewater.com, you can find the course and blog with safety tips.
Making a home gym can be challenging, but these tips are a great starting place
Some people think you need an entire extra room in order to have a home gym, but you don’t have to dedicate that much space to it. You could use part of a bedroom, backyard, garage, etc. My home gym is in the garage, but I also have to use some of the space for storage cabinets.
Depending on the space you have, pick 1 or 2 items that are the most important to you. These items might be a little bigger such as a treadmill, squat rack, spin bike, Pilates reformer, etc. Then, pick some space-saver items like adjustable-weight dumbbells, squat racks that tuck into the wall, foldable walking pads, resistance bands, etc.
If you make your space feel inviting, you will be more motivated to work out in it. I have a fun neon sign, an oil diffusor, and a bright speaker that all get me excited to go use my gym. If you use your treadmill as a coat hanger, you are less likely to want to use it.
Creating a carefully curated home bar provides the perfect setting for hosting gatherings and honing your mixology skills. The rise of craft cocktails has undoubtedly revolutionized the home bar, turning it into a realm of experimentation and innovation. It grants individuals the chance to explore a myriad of flavors, ingredients, and techniques, allowing them to craft their own unique and personalized beverages, thus enhancing the social experience.
To infuse a local flavor into your bar, consider exploring the brands that have deep connections to our community right here in Arizona. Whether you have a preference for small-batch whiskey, gin infused with locally sourced botanicals, vodka, tequila, liqueurs, or even bitters, you'll discover a local rendition on the shelves that will elevate your gin and tonics and espresso martinis to new heights.
Creating your own home bar doesn't have to be a daunting task. With just a few key items, you'll be ready to kick off any party with ease. But don't be afraid to let your imagination run wild when it comes to selecting bar tools - they can be a fantastic way to express yourself.
1. Invest in a top-notch ice bucket that can keep your ice chilled for hours, and don't forget a handy ice pick for easy cube retrieval.
2. A shaker is an absolute must-have for mixing and shaking up delicious cocktails. Look for one with a built-in strainer or invest in a separate strainer to ensure your drinks are poured smoothly, without any unwanted bits.
3. A jigger is a handy measuring tool that guarantees precise measurements for your cocktails.
4. A long-handled spoon is perfect for gently stirring and blending ingredients in your cocktails.
5. Don't forget to have bottle openers and corkscrews on hand for effortlessly opening cans and bottles.
Enhancing the drinking experience with the right glassware for your cocktails can be a delightful touch, but you don't need to have a specific glass for every type of cocktail. However, having a few essential glasses in your collection can cater to a wide range of cocktails:
1. Crafted for savoring spirits neat, Whisky glasses feature a tulip shape that concentrates the aromas, allowing you to fully appreciate the flavors of the spirit, making them ideal for sipping whiskey or other fine spirits.
2. Iconic and timeless with their long stem and wide, shallow bowl, Martini glasses are perfect for serving classic cocktails like espresso martinis and cosmopolitans and can add an elegant touch to your drink.
3. Versatile and adaptable, Highball glasses are suitable for a variety of cocktails. Their tall and narrow design, with a capacity of around 10 to 12 ounces, makes them perfect for mixed drinks with a higher ratio of mixer to alcohol, like Mojitos, gin and tonics, and Tom Collins.
4. Also referred to as Rocks glasses or Lowball glasses, these sturdy glasses are ideal for whiskey-based cocktails such as an old fashioned, whiskey sours and other spirit-forward cocktails.
When searching for unique and affordable glassware, consider exploring secondhand stores and thrift shops. These places often have one-of-a-kind pieces that can add character to your home bar without breaking the bank.
Additionally, for locally unique options, you can visit urBana at the Epicenter, where elegant glassware is available to help you create those Instagram-worthy cocktails. Enjoy the process of experimenting with different glasses and finding the ones that align with your style and preferences. Remember, the most important thing is to savor your cocktails in whatever glassware you have at hand!
To truly impress your guests with a variety of delicious cocktails, it is crucial to have a well-stocked collection of mixers. While there are numerous options available, here are some exceptional mixers that will elevate your cocktail game to new heights.
1. Sparkling club soda is a versatile mixer that adds a refreshing effervescence to countless cocktails. Its bubbly nature pairs perfectly with various spirits and flavors, making it an essential addition to any home bar.
2. If you're a fan of gin-based drinks like the classic Gin and Tonic, tonic water is a must-have mixer. Its distinct flavor beautifully complements the botanicals in gin, creating a harmonious balance of flavors that will truly tantalize your taste buds.
3. Vermouth is an indispensable ingredient for classic cocktails such as the Martini and Manhattan. Available in both sweet and dry varieties, vermouth adds depth and complexity to your drinks. Make sure to refrigerate it once opened to prevent spoilage.
4. Although not technically mixers, bitters play a crucial role in many cocktails. These concentrated flavor extracts, derived from botanicals, fruits, spices, bark, and roots, impart unique flavors and aromas to drinks like the Old Fashioned. Consider trying locally made bitters from San Tan Spirits to take your cocktail creations to the next level.
5. Simple syrup is another essential ingredient that should always be on hand. Made by combining equal parts sugar and water, it adds a touch of sweetness to a wide range of cocktails. For an exciting twist, substitute the water with flavorful teas like chamomile, jasmine, or lavender.
6. Canned juices and mixers such as orange, lemon, cranberry, pineapple, and tomato are excellent additions to your bar. If you're on the lookout for exceptional and flavorful mixers, I highly recommend checking out Iconic Cocktail at the Gilbert Farmers Market, and their unique and delicious range of mixers that will inspire you to experiment with different flavors and create the perfect cocktail.
It's crucial to curate a collection of beverages that genuinely excite you. Take the time to delve into the world of spirits, researching and experimenting with various cocktail recipes and techniques to discover what tickles your taste buds. Share captivating stories and anecdotes about the drinks you serve, whether it's the rich history behind a specific spirit or a memorable moment you had while enjoying it.
1. When it comes to embarking on a spirits journey, whisk(e)y is an exceptional choice due to its incredible diversity. Regardless of your preference for Scotch, Irish, Bourbon, Rye, or Japanese, whisky offers a versatile range of flavors and styles. For those seeking intriguing whiskies to explore, we recommend the dynamic Del Bac Dorado, which surprises with mesquite smoke notes that add a unique twist to its profile.
2. While "gin" may not rhyme with "tonic," they do indeed complement each other splendidly. The world of gin has undergone a remarkable evolution, now offering a plethora of options to suit every palate. If the traditional juniper-forward profile doesn't appeal to you, fear not, for there are gins that emphasize alternative spices or botanicals, like the delicate elegance of locally crafted Suncliffe Gin.
3. Rum , once the libation of choice for buccaneers and seafarers, has now become a beloved tropical indulgence. Allow yourself to venture into the realm of possibilities with the delightful Papago Dark Rum, crafted by the adventurous souls at Adventurous Stills.
4. Vodka , the suave maestro of the spirits realm, effortlessly harmonizes with any cocktail creation and can be savored on its own. Its adaptability knows no bounds, making it a staple in countless libations. For those who revel in the bold allure of an espresso martini, look no further than O.H.S.O. Brewery's Coffee Vodka, boasting tantalizing notes of caramel and toasted sugar.
5. Tequila and Mezcal embody the vibrant essence of Mexico's spirit. Tequila, the quintessential ingredient for Margaritas, captivates with its smooth flavor, while Mezcal, embraced by Scotch enthusiasts, has earned its own devoted following. Locally driven Tequila Corrido's additive-free Blanco, which hails from the heart of Arizona, allows you to savor the ultimate Margarita experience, free from the lingering reminders of college days' excess.
6. And let's not forget to explore locally crafted unique spirits that can elevate your cocktail creations, like

When it comes to garnishes, the world of imagination knows no bounds. From the timeless elegance of cocktail olives and onions to the vibrant zest of lemons, limes, and oranges, and even the fiery kick of hot sauces, the options are truly limitless. Alongside the essential elements of salt and sugar, any edible ingredient can be skillfully transformed into a captivating cocktail embellishment. Take, for example, Timbos Smoked Brown Sugar, a remarkable addition that can elevate a whisky drink to unprecedented heights. These adornments not only enhance the visual appeal of beverages, but also add that extra touch of perfection.
When it comes to tequila-based cocktails, the perfect companions are citrus garnishes like lime or lemon. On the other hand, gin-based tonics can be taken to new heights with the addition of olives, cucumbers, or even onions And with Agritopia Farms in our backyard, you can enhance the experience by handpicking your own citrus fruits, infusing your cocktails with the freshness and flavor of carefully selected garnishes.
And let’s not forget the delightful burst of freshness that herbs like thyme, basil, and rosemary bring to the table. Not only do they provide a delightful texture, but they also infuse cocktails with captivating flavors. And the best part? These herbs can flourish beautifully in a pot right on your countertop, adding an instant touch of greenery to your mixology endeavors.
So, raise a glass to the exciting journey ahead and the opportunity to express your own passions through cocktail curation and cheers to building your dream home bar!
Add Doors and Windows to your annual spring cleaning to do list
ARTICLE BY GRETCHEN PAHIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM COVERT - GENESIS IMAGES & ANDRIA MAY PHOTOGRAPHYSpring has nearly sprung and for many valley residents, they are taking stock of some spring-cleaning options and maybe some items that need to be repaired around the house. Among those things that often get neglected are the condition of your windows and doors, but they are some of the most structurally important to the home. The team at Grizzly Windows
“This is especially important in areas like Arizona where dust and sand can accumulate on surfaces. Regular cleaning prevents buildup that can lead to damage over time.”
and Doors visited with Gilbert City Lifestyle to give us a few pointers on one of the most overlooked parts of our home - Our Windows.
Grizzly Windows and Doors is a company specializing in the installation of windows and doors. It focuses on high-quality craftsmanship and offers a range of products including all-wood, wood-clad, aluminum, fiberglass, and vinyl windows. Window and door installations are a craft where quality material selection and meticulous care converge. Daniel Papp, and Mario Trujillo are the craftsmen of this mission at Grizzly, ensuring that every frame installed by Grizzly Windows and Doors is not only a barrier against the elements but a gateway to a better quality of life for individuals in their homes and businesses.
According to Daniel Papp, founder of Grizzly, your windows and doors should ideally be replaced every 10 to 15 years, but the timeframe can depend on the circumstances. “Different materials have different lifespans,” according to Papp. “For example, vinyl and fiberglass tend to last longer than wood framed windows in certain climates due to their resistance to weathering and decay.”
Papp also shares these other factors including:
• Environmental Factors: Harsh weather conditions, like extreme heat, cold, or coastal air, can shorten the lifespan of windows and doors.
• Quality of Installation: Proper installation plays a significant role in the longevity of windows and doors. Poorly installed windows may need to be replaced sooner.
• Window and Door Condition: Signs like drafts, difficulty in operation, condensation between panes, or visible damage are indicators that it might be time to consider replacement.
• Energy Efficiency Concerns: Older windows and doors may not be as energy efficient as modern designs. Replacing them with energy-efficient models can improve home comfort and reduce energy bills.
• Aesthetic and Home Value: Homeowners may also choose to replace windows and doors for aesthetic reasons or to increase property value, even if the existing ones are still functional. Regular maintenance can extend the life of windows and doors, but if they start to show signs of wear or aren’t performing as expected, it may be time to consider replacement.
Papp stresses also there are several things you can do in your home to extend the life of your windows and doors. “Regular cleaning is crucial for maintaining the integrity and appearance of windows,” shares Papp. “This is especially important in areas like Arizona where dust and sand can accumulate on surfaces. Regular cleaning prevents buildup that can lead to damage over time.”
Other important things to remember when it comes to proper maintenance of your doors and windows include:
• Proper Selection of Cleaning Products
• Maintenance of Window Seals
• Inspection for Damage
• Proper Installation and Repair
• Regular inspection for Water Damage
• Proper Ventilation.

My Arizona Home Designs brings affordability to interior design services
Interior design services can make all the difference when bringing mood, flow, character and ambiance to a small space or an entire room. It takes a keen eye with a flair for style and design to bring a home to life. In the past, interior design services may have been out of reach to some because of cost. Designer Nelly Irias is changing all of that with her affordable interior design services through her company, My Arizona Home Designs.
Nelly Irias had an early introduction to interior design that sprouted as part of her busy family dynamic while she was growing up in Honduras. “I’ve always loved interior design!: says Irias. “When I was living back home in Honduras, my mom used to work all the time, so she never had time to take care of the house. I was always the one moving furniture, and she would give me her card and ask me to go buy curtains or bed sheets, because I was the oldest. I had that responsibility.” She grew to love her home design duties.
CONTINUED >
Irias graduated college with a business degree in Honduras and moved to the US. She worked for seven years in the Telecommunications industry and learned and excelled in project management. When COVID hit, she was working from home, had a lot of time to spend around the house and began studying interior design. That also coincided with the time that she and her husband bought a new home. “I wanted to learn for myself but then a lot of opportunities came after that,” she says.
The beauty and convenience of the way Irias has developed her business is that there are several tiers of service, based on what
type of design expertise is needed. Whether someone is seeking a quick design consultation, input on coordinating accessories, a video consultation, a hands-on approach with in-person consultation or a special, larger design project, Irias is willing and equipped to complete nearly any design task. “Since 2020, I’ve completed about 30 homes,” Irias says.
Single rooms and small renovations are some of the projects she likes best. “I love simple elegant designs, and I love trying to put things together with high-end pieces and also affordable pieces,” Irias explains. "I always tell my clients, ‘Let’s invest in
“I love simple elegant designs, and I love trying to put things together with high-end pieces and also affordable pieces.”
your main pieces. Let’s make those be a statement and something that will last a long time, and then everything else — we can use affordable things." As a designer, she aims for a high-end look at an affordable price.
“The trend for this year, and keep in mind trends last five-to-10 years, we’re moving away from the neutral, all-white, all-beige, a lot of grays that we’ve been using, and now we’re moving into color,” Irias says. Moody and darker colors, dark woods and a lot of textures on pillows and curtains will become more prevalent. Dark green and deep burgundy will be a trend moving forward, and she is seeing a lot of burgundy in design blogs and catalogs.
“I always tell my clients, let’s invest in your main pieces. Let’s make those be a statement and something that will last a long time, and then everything else — we can use affordable things.”
The practice of matching everything is giving way to purposefully mismatched pieces. “We’re playing with different types of furniture in a room and staying away from matchy-matchy,” she says. “That is a trend that is coming, and we’re going to be playing with different tones of wood.”
Stainless steel appliances in kitchens are still the best bet. “That is always going to be your go-to, and your safest investment because most people don’t stay in their homes more than five-to-10 years.” Going with something really different isn’t advisable as it can make selling a home more difficult when the time comes. On the flip side of the coin, if you plan to stay in your home for a long time, you can use more of your unique personality and unusual designs and style without worrying about how it will affect your home’s immediate resale value. we are here to help transition
Teenagers are complex. They can be awkward, distant, overly dramatic, talk back, rebel and be impulsive. But they are often misunderstood. Teens can also be diverse, eclectic, open minded, charismatic, funny, empathic and curious. Now more than ever, with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic that created a lot of social isolation for our teens as well as the continued and ongoing rise of involvement within social media, and the internet, our teens are facing a mental health crisis like no other time in history.
Many of our teens can get into rabbit holes within the internet or in discussions with friends and end up “self-diagnosing”. This can present many issues that also can negatively impact their mental health, increasing symptoms due to misinformation. As parents, and important adults in our teen’s lives, there are several ways we can support and positively impact our teens to help them decrease anxiety and depression symptoms, and in doing so, create more trust, and secure attachments.
First off, check in! We know that teens can be distant and not want to engage in a lot of “small talk”, but communicating and asking about their personal lives, friends, values and interests does go a long way; ensuring a nonjudgmental space is key. Second, plan structured activities together with your teen, especially active/ physical activities. These let your teen know that you care and are great ways to increase endorphins and bond. Third, pay attention to your own mental health! You are their greatest teachers, and whether they show it or not, they are soaking up all your behaviors to form their own ideals going forward.
