In Good Health

Ages ago I made one small positive change that triggered hundreds more— instead of taking in the 10 o’clock nightly news, I watched a late-night talk show instead. This was before streaming and DVRs. Not a conscious “healthy” choice, but rather more of a tipping point. Later it became clearer: choose laughter over worry.

Several weeks later I couldn’t help but notice how much lighter I felt each morning—buoyant, really. I retraced my steps and marveled at how one teeny-tiny choice the night before set my next day up for success, realizing each morning isn’t necessarily a reset but more of a jumping-off point for the domino effect from the day before.

That revelation laid the foundation for hundreds more. Each Sunday, I opted-in to something new, a mini goal for the following week: drink more water, set aside time to finally stop into that new restaurant, drink my morning coffee outside, or incorporate a new ingredient to my shopping list.

Food for thought when the new year kicks in and we get overcome with the desire to overhaul our life; it doesn’t have to be accomplished at breakneck speed. One small change per week adds up to 52 per year. Just keep opting in and you’ll be amazed at how quickly the good pushes out the bad.

Every summer, Ruthie opened her Jersey Shore home to family near and far—we’re talking 25 people squeezed into five bedrooms; sleeping on couches and floors. She was generous with her home, forging fun memories of the boardwalk and seashore for all who battled for a bed each summer. And so it makes sense that her grandson, Peter Waters, would continue her spirit of generosity and pay it forward with Ruthie’s Boardwalk Social, the tiny Pearl Street grilled cheese hut inspired by those summers at the Jersey Shore.

When Covid first hit, Ruthie’s Boardwalk Social, like all restaurants, shut down. But the staff still wanted to work, and Peter wanted to provide them with opportunities to do so. “It was really important that the staff who had broken their backs getting us up and running, that we didn’t just shut down shop for them,” Peter says. “Then friends, family and customers started reaching out saying, ‘What can we do to help your restaurant out?’”

Peter came up with a plan: those who wanted to help could buy grilled cheese sandwiches to donate to local police departments, hospitals and nonprofits.

Staff could keep their jobs firing the ‘cheeses and delivering them to the grateful recipients. “We turned into a distribution center for receiving donations and delivering food—all as a result of friends, family and customers reaching out,” Peter says. “We hit 1,000 sandwiches in just a few weeks. It was a really amazing gesture on the part of the community to reach out and do that kind of thing.”

Realizing that many restaurant industry workers had lost their incomes, Peter added a line item to Ruthie’s online menu where people could buy a sandwich and fries for out-of-work restaurant employees. And they’d regularly donate sandwiches to TGTHR (formerly Attention Homes), a local nonprofit dedicated to ending youth homelessness.

Even today, Peter says that every couple of months someone will buy sandwiches for a local charity, and the option is still up on Ruthie’s website. But before you hit checkout, you might want to grab something for yourself as well. Ruthie’s Boardwalk Social grills up eight cheesy sandwiches, plus a dairy-free avocado toast, twice-cooked fries, tomato soup and soft serve ice cream.

“We hit 1,000 sandwiches in just a few weeks. It was a really amazing gesture on the part of the community to reach out and do that kind of thing.”

Besides the classic American cheese version, Peter says the most popular sandwiches are the Glass Onion, made with brie, apples, caramelized onions and whole grain mustard, and the Mac Daddy, which throws mac and cheese onto the bread with white cheddar. Each sandwich gets toasted for 90 seconds at 600 degrees, ensuring consistently ideal levels of melty-cheesy goodness.

Last summer, Peter got the opportunity to bring this Ruthie’s a little closer to his original Ruthie’s inspiration when they took over a sublease of a restaurant at the Boulder reservoir. “This whole thing is based off the Jersey Shore boardwalk experience,” Peter says. “And now Ruthie’s finally got its own boardwalk in Boulder out at the reservoir.”

BEAUTIFUL JUXTAPOSITIONS DEFINE A GOLD HILL HOME REMODEL BY HMH ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN 50

Caroline Ashley wasn’t expecting to come home to a majorly flooded house in 2019. However, Caroline notes that what began as an emergency situation led to an opportunity that turned out to be both beautiful and joyful.

“This remodel started with chaos,” says Caroline. “But it brought forth the most amazing regeneration of this home.”

Caroline called her longtime connection Harvey Hine, principal at Boulder’s HMH Architecture + Interiors, to help her address the issues in her home caused by the flood and give it a sweeping refresh. With the help of the HMH team, including designer Leah Civiok, the group set out to rediscover the home’s core beauty and transition it to a new iteration.

“When we work with clients who have had major home damage, we often see them wanting things to go back to how they were before,” says Harvey. “Caroline was very open to exploring how we could make her home even better than it had been with new and different colors, finishes and other rearrangements.”

“As we approached each decision with this remodel, we considered what the element had been before and how we could improve it for the next chapter of this house,” says Leah. “How could each element be re-energized and refreshed?”

The original incarnation of the home was completed in the 1990s. Situated on 150 acres of land in Gold Hill that is under a conservation easement, it is perched on a knoll with panoramic mountain views stretching from the Continental Divide to Boulder and beyond. The home was purposefully designed as a classic, yet splendid log cabin that respected its spectacular natural surroundings and represented a culmination of the past houses that the homeowners had loved and lived in around the world.

The home was also thoughtfully laid out to encourage and complement the homeowners’ everyday life experiences. All of the media, entertainment and gathering spaces are downstairs, while the second floor is dedicated to rest and relaxation. It was important to Caroline that these principles of simplicity and consciousness were honored and even further emphasized in the home’s refresh.

“This home is very straightforward in its layout,” says Harvey. “Its simplicity is a big part of its beauty. We were fine-tuning something that was already quite magnificent.”

The result of the home’s remodel is a series of harmonious juxtapositions between the modern, the historic and the natural. In the living room, the old, the new and nature beautifully synchronize with pieces from Caroline’s vast antique collection—including a desk and piano—complemented by striking modern metal sofas.

“Caroline has an incredible collection of antique pieces from Europe and artwork from all over the world,” says Leah. “Creating spaces to hold and serve as a backdrop for those pieces was a big part of the process.”

“Its simplicity is a big part of its beauty. We were fine-tuning something that was already quite magnificent.”

This array of antiques and artwork is showcased throughout the home and enhanced by striking colors and materials. A bold indigo hue bathes the kitchen, which houses a 450-year-old elm table. Meanwhile, a friendly yellow paint envelopes the loft space, an ideal area for yoga and play complete with a collection of antique children’s furniture. Multiple fireplaces throughout the home are made fresh and bright by plaster surrounds, which emanate modern elegance and a welcoming, personable feel. Natural elements are used and emphasized throughout, such as the standout existing Yellowstone logs brimming with natural character. Handcrafted woodwork serves as a further example of the exquisite care and quality poured into the home’s construction and refresh.

Grand yet approachable, stunning and comfortable, timeless yet filled with history, it’s a home that Caroline feels now even further encompasses her life experiences of the past, the day-to-day needs of the present and the promise of tomorrow.

“It’s so important to find joy in where you live no matter what happens in the chaos,” says Caroline. “Turn it into a miracle every chance you get!”

CROSSFIT CRAZE
THE

ATHLETE LIFE | HEALTH + WELLNESS ERIC ROZA LEARNED ABOUT CROSSFIT AROUND 2009. A RECREATIONAL RUNNER, ERIC WAS WORKING HIS WAY UP TO AN ULTRAMARATHON WHEN HE INJURED HIS ANTERIOR TIBIALIS. CUTTING BACK ON THE SPORT THAT HAD HURT HIS LEG, HE PIVOTED TO CROSSFIT AFTER READING AN ARTICLE ON THE EMERGING WORKOUT TREND. 58
CONTINUED > 59 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER JANUARY 2023

“I’ve always been a fitness nut,” Eric says. “I’m one of those people who needs to exercise to be in a good mood, be pleasant to the people around me and have energy.”

CrossFit was founded in California by Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai a decade before Eric heard of it. The fitness regimen includes high-intensity strength and aerobic exercises derived from interval training, weightlifting and calisthenics.

“I had never done any of that stuff, but somehow I was attracted to it,” Eric says. Today, CrossFit boasts around 12,000 locations, nearly half of which are in the United States.

When one of Eric’s colleagues at Datalogix—a data company in Westminster, where Eric was chief executive—asked him to attend a CrossFit session with him, “it was love at first sight,” Eric says. “I was humbled by the first workout. It was like nothing I’d experienced before.”

With Datalogix’s fitness initiative budget, Eric invited CrossFit trainers to the office twice a week to improve workplace morale and productivity.

“People quit smoking. One person lost 80 pounds,” Eric says. Some of these employees had rarely worked out previously, and their CrossFit trainers adjusted workouts to their abilities. “I quickly sensed that CrossFit was a couple things: It built a great community, and it was authentically aligned with my values of helping people be healthy and happy.”

So in January 2013, Eric founded CrossFit Sanitas in Boulder at 2525 Arapahoe Avenue. CrossFit licenses their name to gyms after an initial $1,000, two-day certification process, followed by a $3,000 annual fee.

In addition to owning CrossFit Sanitas, Eric is a Level 2 CrossFit Trainer, which, naturally, follows Level 1 training. (Eric estimates there are more than 100,000 Level 1 CrossFit trainers worldwide.) Eric became a Level 2 Trainer after taking Level 1 and Level 2 CrossFit courses, where participants learn how to improve others’ movements in their coached classes,

regardless of fitness level or infirmity. At Boulder’s CrossFit location, Eric has seen participants from ages 5 to 75 working out.

“I’ve never seen that anywhere else,” Eric says. CrossFit is, “by nature, non-hierarchical. You can find people from different cultures, education levels, socioeconomic statuses, ages and fitness levels all working out together.”

In June 2020, CrossFit’s CEO Greg Glassman resigned, following a controversial tweet and Zoom call. This led to hundreds of CrossFit gyms threatening disaffiliation, on top of gym bankruptcies and closings caused by the pandemic. Half of the leading professional CrossFit athletes boycotted the annual CrossFit Games, the sport’s version of the Olympics.

“CrossFit was in need of a new direction,” Eric says. Having sold Datalogix to Oracle in 2014 for a reported $1.2 billion, Eric was contemplating his future when this opportunity arose. Glassman agreed to sell him the company, which Eric moved to Boulder, and brought in investment firm Berkshire Partners as his financial partner.

“There’s a lot of diversity in the CrossFit community—millions of people in 155 countries—and they all have different views,” Eric says. “The challenge was: How can we make it clear that we are first and foremost about inclusivity and welcoming everyone?”

In February of this year, Eric announced his transition from CrossFit’s CEO to board chairman. This move aligned with Eric’s initial intention to work through the turnaround and move on.

Outside of CrossFit’s board of directors, Eric works for private equity firm Vista Equity Partners, where he serves as an operating managing director. He also remains committed to building fitness in the Boulder community and just renewed the CrossFit Sanitas lease for another five years.

“I love the Boulder lifestyle,” Eric says of his affinity for skiing, hiking and mountain biking, plus doing CrossFit at his very own location.

“My goal with founding Proud House was to create a design studio for

my clients that would inspire their imaginations.”

A little less stressful and a lot more fun. This is how Megan Daughtry describes her approach to helping clients realize their ideal homes through her Boulderbased company, Proud House Studios.

“My goal with founding Proud House was to create a design studio for my clients that would inspire their imaginations,” says Megan, CEO and principal designer. “I love working with my clients to co-create the homes of their dreams.”

This spirit of collaboration and thoughtful, personalized design is especially evident in a recent project that the Proud House team embarked on. The client was undertaking a major remodel of their three-bedroom, three-bathroom home that included finishing the basement and adding an underground bedroom with a dining room addition above it, updating the

deck to wrap around the house and updating its original finishes. The homeowners worked with the Proud House team to visualize and execute a new interior design for the home that would encompass both largescale rearrangements and specific design details.

“Each space in this home was co-created with my clients,” says Megan. “We worked together to carefully curate the vision down to every detail.”

The goals for the home’s interior design were twofold. First, to maximize every inch of available space to accommodate the everyday needs of the homeowners and their family. Second, to invoke a crisp, luminous style harkening back to the homeowners’ roots.

“My client is from Sweden and desired a bright Nordic home with all gray, white and light wood materials,” says Megan.

67 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER JANUARY 2023

To achieve these dual goals, the Proud House team considered both large-scale and minute elements throughout the home to ensure that its space was optimized and that the homeowners would be enveloped in a peaceful, glowing palette. For the home’s exterior, the original brick was replaced with stucco to soften the exterior color. New windows with gray cross-shaped mullions add to the exterior curb appeal and evoke a more European home design. The wraparound covered porch was refreshed to include gray-stained tongue and groove paneling on the ceiling as well as a new railing, heaters, speakers and outdoor kitchen with a Caesarstone outdoor-rated quartz countertop. The concrete driveway was replaced with pavers and walkways, adding textures reminiscent of European mountain towns.

“I was inspired by the cool grays and whites found in the icy Swedish landscape,” says Megan. “I then repeated those exterior colors inside the home.”

On the main floor, the kitchen was moved toward the new dining room to facilitate a new mudroom space—complete with custom cabinetry—and allow for the kitchen to look out toward the home’s lush backyard and adjacent park space. This all-white kitchen was built with Siteline Cabinetry with Pental Misterio white countertops with subtle gray veining. The stained white oak wide

plank flooring—Provenza brand and in a light gray Chelsea Pier—adds a warm, soothing aura to the space.

Peak functionality and style are likewise blended in the newly finished basement. The space is cleverly divided into seven functional spaces, including a new bedroom, the bathroom, a multipurpose office or guest room with a Murphy bed, a kitchenette, a laundry room, a sleepover zone with custom bunk beds and a media and game lounge.

Elsewhere in the home, the bathrooms exude a crisp, immaculate elegance. While one incorporates lovely Nimbus blue cabinets from Siteline Cabinetry and Enigma Ash Blue shower tiles from the Tile Bar, the primary bathroom glows with Ann Sacks Savoy shower tile and Siberian Pearl brushed marble floors in a herringbone pattern.

Additional special design elements are peppered throughout the home, including a new fireplace surround, bike barn and versatile custom garage cabinetry. Boulder’s Elton R Construction served as the home’s builder. The end result is a home that emanates both the taste and the lifestyle of the homeowners—all achieved through abundant care and collaboration.

“This home has such a cohesive look,” says Megan. “It feels soft and peaceful. We poured so much love into all its details.”

The Audi SQ5 Sportback at Audi Flatirons

Just like its previous model the SQ5, the 2023 SQ5 Sportback SUV screams sporty and stylish, a perfect mix for almost any driver.

“The SQ5 Sportback builds on the success of the already excellent SQ5,” says Jeremy Burgmaier, Audi brand specialist at Audi Flatirons in Broomfield, “by adding sultry lines, a more sport-focused shape, and the latest design language from Audi’s Malibu Design Studio.”

While the SQ5 Sportback doesn’t sacrifice aesthetics with its leather seats and interior Carbon Atlas inlays, it will also get you where you need to go, and fast. The SQ5 boasts 349 horsepower and the capability to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds.

The Sportback’s adaptive air suspension allows for adjustable shock absorbers on every wheel, plus control over the height of your ride.

Dynamic steering improves handling behind the wheel, especially at higher speeds.

This new Audi model also includes a high-definition touch display, similar to that of your smartphone, as well as park and lane assist features.

“The SQ5 Sportback provides the perfect combination of performance and functionality,” says Ryan Watson, Audi Flatirons’ general manager.

The SQ5 Sportback starts at $59,200. There are currently multiple units in stock and available for delivery at Audi Flatirons, which was designated Magna Society Elite—awarded to the top 17 Audi dealerships out of 304 in the country—for the last three years.

Scherer Violin Shop Reopened in a New Location on Main Street After the Marshall Fire

For the last 10 years, Will Scherer has paired his love of music and making violins with being an entrepreneur. But last December a fire ripped through Boulder County, leaving his home and violin shop incinerated.

Will’s home and shop were one of more than 1,000 homes and businesses burned due to the Marshall Fire.

While Will’s house and shop didn’t completely burn, it remains uninhabitable and has been gutted to the studs. “My violin shop was in the lower level, and everything that was in one part of the shop was completely destroyed because of the fire,” Will says. He saved as much as he could, but a lot of tools and violins in his shop were too damaged by soot, smoke and water. Although Will had business insurance, it wasn’t enough to cover his losses and left him to make the hard decision to close up shop.

But nearly eight months later, after community support, word of mouth and a GoFundMe page, Scherer Violin Shop reopened on Main Street in Louisville.

“I had this imperative that I reopen up the shop because all of a sudden people were reaching out, supporting us,” Will says. “I realized how many people in the community really wanted the violin shop back up and going. So I had to answer the call.”

While Will investigated ways to reopen and rebuild, the late Andy Clark, owner of Moxie, launched a GoFundMe page to reopen Scherer Violin Shop. The fundraiser went on to raise over $53,000. “Andy was a phenomenal person and a big supporter of the community, art and music,” Will says.

As fate would have it, news of the shop reopening and the need for a new location spread. The Boulder County music community came together and through word of mouth, helped Will find a storefront for

his business. Located at 844 Main Street, Suite 103, Scherer Violin Shop now has a retail space in the front and a workshop in the back, perfect for the work Will does.

“It reminded me how lucky we are to live in this community. We’re a community of doers,” he says. “Whether you’re into climbing or you’re into cycling or into music or making things, it just seems like the fact that we have all these things in common makes the fabric [of our community] so much tighter.”

Will can be found at his shop nearly every day making violins, repairing bows and bridges and putting violins from the community back together. He says the process of losing nearly everything and then reopening with a massive amount of support has made him realize music can heal and solve a lot of problems in the world.

“It’s healing to share music, whether it’s making music or listening to music. And, for me, the healing has come through playing music and through having people share music with me, and also through getting back to do the work that I love, which is the crafting of things,” Will says.

Will and his family plan to rebuild their home in Louisville and will keep the shop on Main Street. “Having a studio at your house is one thing, but having a retail store is something completely different. And having regular hours where people can walk in and visit with you just because they’re walking down the street is pretty cool,” Will says. “It’s been a lot of fun.”

In true Boulder County fashion, the community has rallied behind Scherer Violin Shop. In the nearly 10 years the shop has been in business, Will says September was his best month yet, and he credits his success to a lot of hard work combined with people wanting to see his business reopen and thrive.

Matthew says the art will represent the “continuity of nature, resilience in our natural world and how we can learn from that and the resilience in our community.”

But the community support and outreach don’t stop there. Will donated all of his charred instruments salvaged from the fire to local artist, woodworker and childhood friend Matthew Neidenberg. Matthew plans to use the charred violins, broken tiles and glass, old fence posts and other wood from the burn area to create four phoenix bird sculptures, each representing a different season. Matthew says the art will represent the “continuity of nature, resilience in our natural world and how we can learn from that and the resilience in our community.”

The art was put up for auction in late December, and proceeds will go toward tree-planting projects in the neighborhoods destroyed by the fire. More information, including a link to the auction website, can be found on Matthew’s website at MountainsideArts.com

With the Front Range as a Backyard, a Winter Playground Is Waiting To Be Explored

Temperatures are dropping, but your time outside doesn’t have to. The Norwegian have a saying, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” Colorado is already known for its gorgeous weather year-round (“It’s a dry cold!”), but for some, winter tends to put the chill on outdoor fun. Take heart: with warm layers and a good attitude (and some rented gear), winter just may become your favorite season. Here’s how to take the first snowy step.

BY FOOT

Hiking and Snowshoeing

Swap fields of wildflowers for breathtaking vistas of snowcapped mountains and you’ll find winter hikes to be just as glorious (if not more so!). The key? Bundling up in synthetic and wool layers, proper footwear (with the addition of gaiters and microspikes), and always the 10 essentials in your bag. (Think: food, water, first aid, fire starter, light source, extra layers, sun protection, a navigation system, repair tools and emergency shelter.) Check sources like Cotrex or AllTrails for recent trip reports.

Snowshoeing is a great way to expand your winter hiking, allowing you to see favorite trails in a new light, find solitude in areas that are otherwise crowded all summer and venture out further into fresher, deeper snow. With a much lower entry price than skiing or snowboarding, all you’ll need in addition to winter hiking essentials is the snowshoes themselves and possibly poles. Front range shops like Crystal Ski Shop in Boulder (CrystalSkiShop. com), FERAL Denver ( LiveFeral.com) and certain REI Co-op locations ( Rei.com/Stores/Rentals) offer daily snowshoe rentals so you can try before you buy.

Cross-Country Skiing

Advanced enthusiasts will make this sport look effortlessly graceful, but cross-country skiing will get your heart pumping, quick. Also known as XC skiing, or sometimes called by the umbrella term “Nordic skiing,” this popular way to hit the trails uses skinnier, specific skis to travel across hilly or flat, groomed or off-trail terrain. There are two disciplines: classic and skate, which call for different skis. Classic is the best bet for beginners and calls on a walking-like motion to glide; skate skiing uses a technique more similar to ice skating. If you’re headed to one of the popular ski resorts near Denver or Boulder like Eldora, Keystone or Breckenridge, many are home to a Nordic center where you can get outfitted and take a lesson. Fat Biking

Hop on one of these hefty bikes to see popular trails in a whole new season. Able to traverse snow (and mud and sand!), this oversized, mountain bike-adjacent ride lets cycling enthusiasts hit the trails year-round, even when covered in packed snow. Fat bikes have oversized tires 3-5 inches wide with hefty tread, but otherwise operate much like mountain bikes. Take one out for a spin on low-key local paths or dial it up at destinations like Devil’s Thumb Ranch or Brainard Lake Recreation Area off of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. You can rent fat bikes at local shops like University Bicycles in Boulder ( UBikes.com) or book a guided half-day or full-day tour with Front Range Ride Guides ( FrontRangeRideGuides.com), which offers guided trips for all skill levels and includes a certified guide, the bike, skills coaching, gear and a custom tailored ride.

BEYOND BEAUTY EVOLUTION DERMATOLOGY + WELLNESS REDEFINES BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE-OUT WITH MEDICAL AND AESTHETIC EXCELLENCE 98

January is the perfect time to focus on selfcare. Since opening its doors in August 2022, Evolution Dermatology + Wellness has redefined the idea of preventative skincare and excellence in aesthetics. With over two decades in the dermatology and aesthetics industry, founder Pauli Morrow, MMSc, PA-C has garnered invaluable practical experience as a Dermatology Physician Assistant. Now, with Evolution, she and her team believe in an elevated medical experience that goes well beyond expectations. And, it shows.

This unparalleled vision and experience offered by Evolution + Wellness is equally shared by both Pauli and Kim Guthke, PA-C. Pauli has worked with and seen firsthand the talents of Kim for years and they are the right team with a shared vision. Kim brings over 20 years of dermatology clinical practice experience. Together they are passionate, experienced medical professionals committed to ensuring all patients receive the best care tailored to their individual needs in a warm, welcoming environment.

The opening of Evolution Dermatology + Wellness brings Pauli’s personal mantra to life—embodying compassion and care for people’s overall health and well-being by combining comprehensive cosmetic and medical treatments so they feel better while looking their most confident and happy. In other words, Evolution operates as a concierge-type practice where the staff spends more time with each patient than a typical general dermatology practice.

“Unlike most medical practices, we are able to accommodate patients quickly. Everything is personalized because we care about the well-being of each patient individually, like an extended family,” says Pauli. “We treat teens for acne and follow them through college...We also perform cosmetic procedures on patients for years and help them look their best for their child’s wedding or graduation. It gives us a great sense of pride, and we take great responsibility in bringing health and happiness to patients who we care for like extended family.”

Evolution’s plethora of offerings range from dermatology care to aesthetics and cosmetic procedures. Such services include treatment for acne, rashes, skin cancer and preventative mole checks, along with Botox and other neurotoxins, dermal fillers, PRP injections for hair loss, and skin enhancement procedures such as skin tightening with Sofwave, microneedling and facial chemical peels. Something new to the roster is IV therapy, which can help boost your immune system, enhance athletic performance and recovery, and help with symptoms of migraines.

“We are continuously going to dermatology conferences where we learn the latest from experts around the country and the world. Staying up-to-date with medical advances and cosmetic treatments is an important part of who we are,” says Kim. “Our combined 40 years plus as medical professionals gives us a broad knowledge base to comprehensively treat patients medically

and cosmetically. We pride ourselves in being the best at what we do. We treat holistically, where the primary focus is the health of your skin, while we also realize the importance of looking and feeling your best.”

Ultimately, the Evolution team prides itself on bringing the best aesthetics and technology to their patients—as well as getting involved in their community. “I realize that being a locally-owned business, our connection with the community is important to who we are. This is a huge bonus, and we at Evolution look forward to continuing to develop these relationships further,” adds Pauli.

Self-Care Tip for the New Year!

Winter can be tough on your skin and immune system, especially with the rush and stress after the holiday season. Take time for your health by visiting Evolution for a preventative skin exam, IV boost or anti-aging facial. You’ll feel great and look great, too!

From Barre To Spin and Yoga, Kondition Fitness Focuses on Holistic Training for Every Age and Life Stage

Emma Straight has had an entrepreneurial spirit all her life. After spearheading an illustrious tree-planting initiative to combat global warming at the age of ten, Emma went on to pursue a successful recruiting career in the tech industry on the West Coast. Now the owner and founder of Kondition, she says fitness has become her life’s purpose.

Growing up, Emma’s father always had ambitious ideas that involved creating, inventing and making a difference in the world. As a result, she inherited an unrivaled work ethic and drive that would soon become the backbone of her booming fitness business. Nonetheless, with a die-hard passion for helping people, Emma set forth to start something brand new to improve the Boulder community once more.

After moving back to Boulder, Emma couldn't find a place where she enjoyed working out on a consistent basis. As a life-long fitness advocate and triathlete, she realized most gyms had a “clinical feel” with no space for congregation or connection with other members.

“There were a lot of yoga-only studios at the time, as well as your typical ‘big’ gyms where classes were mediocre,” she explains. Emma knew something different was needed.

After some intense research and soul searching, she convinced her husband that she should quit her job and open a luxury boutique fitness studio. The goal was to offer variety so clients didn't have to pay for multiple memberships around town. As a result, in 2018, she established an all-encompassing workout space where authentic connection and community can co-exist.

“Kondition always smells good, feels good and provides a ‘kommunity’ to support each person. And, after a little time for self-care, clients should feel more content, stress-free and able to care for themselves and others better.”

Emma hopes that everyone who comes to Kondition experiences a sense of relief and the ability to “exhale” by letting stress disappear for an hour each day. While strength training and barre are tops for injury prevention, she has also brought in various modalities over the years, including Spin classes, Dance, Kaiut Yoga and more recently, AerobiKs—which utilizes ankle/wrist weights and focuses on lengthening and toning. “Kondition is where true friendships are formed and fitness is at the forefront—all while emphasizing the overall experience, including safety and well-being.”

Lastly, Kondition is not intimidating or abrasive.

“You should be supported and encouraged by the trainer but not beyond your safety and interest. As you get older, there’s so much more involved than what you’re doing in the class that day. Our instructors push people but encourage them to listen to their own bodies.”

With that in mind, Kondition continues to promote the importance of mobility and functionality. Emma is currently creating an eight-week strength program for older clients; as well as a teen-specific program. She also looks forward to partnering with Colorado Women’s Center to offer group support sessions on stress management and mental health. Watch the website for details.

DID YOU KNOW?

The word “Kondition” means “fitness” in Swedish, an homage to Emma’s Swedish mom. The aesthetics of Kondition are also Scandinavian—with light wood floors, white walls and a clean, bright vibe.
