Think about all of the places you’ve lived. The first house you came home to as a newborn baby. The house (or houses) you grew up in. The first place you lived on your own or shared with your spouse. The home you brought your first child into. What is it that made each of those places special to you? For me, it was the people I lived with and the memories we made together. To be sure, I went through some difficult times in some of those places, but in one way or another, the things I experienced and the people I shared those spaces with became a part of who I am. Have your homes been like that, too?
When we began working on this “Home & Design” issue, our goal was to help you get the most joy from the time you spend in your house, whether that’s by making it look and feel better or by giving you new ideas on how to share it with others. We look at the hottest trends in interior design—from bold, moody colors to statement light fixtures to repurposed elegance (“Maison Très Chic,” p. 34). Plus, you can learn to shop for pieces with a past like a pro at the biggest antiques show in the country, just like your favorite designers do (“Texas Treasure Hunt,” p. 64).
We turned to the experts to help us give our outdoor spaces the most life— how we can protect the trees that make the Hill Country beautiful (“Our Strong, Resilient Nature,” p. 50) and get our gardens healthy and ready for a great harvest (“Ready, Set, Grow,” p. 58). And if you’re looking for something fun to do outside the house during your week off of school, check out our roundup of great places to keep the learning going (“Spring Break Smarts,” p. 80).
Whether your house is high-fashion, eclectic, “Hill Country Modern,” or any style in between, I hope you cherish your time there. May our homes be filled with warmth, wonderful memories, and welcome.
Wishing you a home of love and light,

WHEN IT COMES TO FLOORING, THERE ARE A LOT OF OPTIONS.
SYDNEY HICKS OF HICKS CARPET ONE FLOOR & HOME BREAKS DOWN THE CHOICES TO HELP YOU MAKE THE BEST PICK FOR YOUR HOME.
ARTICLE BY AUBREY MATSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULA VMLuxury vinyl plank (LVP) might be your best bargain for excellent quality flooring, according to Hicks. In fact, she says it’s their most popular option at the store. LVP is a vinyl flooring that has the look of wood, but because it’s made from a scratch-resistant material, Hicks says it is a great option for families who have pets or young children. “It’s made for the everyday home,” she says. “It’s made to be lived in and used.” It’s waterproof and easy to clean, and LVP comes in many widths and colors. With quality LVP starting at $4/square foot,
it’s undoubtedly an affordable and long-lasting option for your home.
If you’re looking for the classic look of traditional hardwood, this is also available at Hicks Carpet One. “It is a classic,” notes Hicks. She says hardwood has a more difficult upkeep than LVP because it can scratch easily. But hardwood offers advantages if your taste changes over the years and you want to switch up the style. Hicks says hardwood floors can be sanded down and given a new stain, even years later. As for the price range, Hicks recommends options that start at $7/square foot.

“It’s made for the everyday home,” Hicks says. “It’s made to be lived in and used.” It’s waterproof and easy to clean, and LVP comes in many widths and colors.
Hicks emphasizes that there’s a lot you can do with carpets. Hicks Carpet One does everything from wallto-wall installations to custom stair runners. For a quality carpet, Hicks recommends starting at at least $2.50/square foot. For a higher-end carpet, Hicks suggests a $12-$15/square foot range. Whether it’s a runner, large-area rug, or simple full-floor carpeting, there’s plenty of room for customization. Hicks says, “There are a lot of ways to add carpet to your space.”
As for pile height—or how thick your carpet is—there are a few factors to consider. Since carpet can hold a lot of dust and allergens if it’s not cared for, Hicks recommended a shorter pile height if you have allergies. A shorter pile is also great for homes with children or pets. A “cut loop” option for carpets prevents pets from getting their claws stuck. Hicks also mentioned the different levels of padding that you can place under your carpet, ranging from standard padding to the feet-sinking-in level of plush.
Hicks Carpet One has quite the range when it comes to tile—from marble looks to wood and even to mosaics. On the more affordable end, Hicks emphasized luxury vinyl tile as a quality alternative to installing stone floors. “Let’s say you want to do marble floors in your bathroom but don’t necessarily want to spend the money on marble floors—there is a luxury vinyl tile that looks like marble,” said Hicks, “All the pros of luxury vinyl all apply to that category as well.”
In terms of what’s trending, Hicks has noticed that stone-looking tiles are having a moment, including the tile that looks like high-end stone. A personal brand favorite of hers is Happy Floors, and Hicks says large 24-inch by 24-inch tiles are currently favored to place on shower walls. If you can’t find the perfect tile for your project in the showroom, Hicks Carpet One can order tile for you from many tile vendors. They’ll also install it for you when it comes in. At the end of the day, whether it’s tile, carpet, or wood, Hicks Carpet One can help give your home just the look you’re going for.

From statement chandeliers to minimalist pendant lights, these fixtures redefine spaces, adding character and ambiance. Boasting diverse styles, they cater to various aesthetics, creating a harmonious balance between architectural elements and decor.
Energy and personality are dominating today's interior design scene. Vibrant hues like deep forest greens, moody blues, and fiery reds are replacing muted tones. This trend encourages self-expression and creativity, transforming homes into lively havens. Whether through accent walls, furniture, or decor accents, embracing bold colors ignites a dynamic aesthetic, making a powerful statement in contemporary design.

Eco-friendly practices are reshaping interiors as repurposed pieces take center stage. Instead of always buying new, homeowners are opting for upcycled furniture and materials, reducing environmental impact. From reclaimed wood to vintage finds, these repurposed elements infuse character and authenticity into spaces. This trend creates a harmonious blend of style and environmental consciousness.
This rebellion against minimalism is redefining interior aesthetics with its bold and eclectic approach. Maximalism embraces vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and a mix of textures. URBAN TREE COMPANY USES THE OLD TO BRING LONE STAR STYLE INTO EVERY HOME
The Texas Hill Country. People from around the globe travel to see this beautiful southern region. A place where gently rolling peaks kiss the sunset and sprawling live oaks tangle across the landscape. For Jenni Urbanczyk, those live oaks are more
Determined to find ways to repurpose the wood, he got his arborist license and started a sawmill. His wife joined him, and they opened up a retail shop.
The couple eventually moved their growing family to Boerne, where Urbanczyk grew up, and picked up right

than just another tree. Along with the cedar, cypress, mesquite, and pecan, they form the heartbeat of her local business, Urban Tree Company.
“People come to Texas to be part of the Hill Country, and these trees are a big part of our history,” Urbanczyk says. “Some of them have been with us one hundred, even two hundred years.”
Urbanczyk and her husband Scott Anderson started their tree service business in San Antonio seven years ago, but their history with trees is almost two decades old. Nearly 20 years ago, Anderson was working with Green Peace in Moab, Utah, on a mission to save trees in the desert there. He began trimming trees and realized how much waste tree removal creates.
where they’d left off in Utah. “Nobody wants to see these trees taken down. But if the tree can no longer live, if it isn’t viable, we’ll remove it, mill it, dry it, and make stuff out of it,” Urbanczyk says. “We’re so much more than just a tree service company. We do custom orders. We have a pile of massive logs we repurpose into handmade home goods, big statement pieces, dining tables, console tables, headboards, cabinets.”
Urban Tree Company occupies a 10-acre space off Blanco Road outside of Bulverde. The facility includes three kilns, a sawmill, and a woodshop, where Urbanczyk and her small team of woodworkers create all the custom pieces. Everything is locally sourced, and prospective customers are invited

to visit the property and check out the inventory in person.
Urbanczyk and her team prioritize being hands-on with each client, working through the process alongside them for all custom pieces. “We have five acres of potential,” she said. “Piles of wood inventory. [The customer] can come out, choose their own wood, and we work on the designs together.”
The company has big plans, including integrating its business with local custom home builders and interior designers. “We want to add a personal flair to your new home. If you want something that’s unique, come to us for mantels, tables, sliding barn doors,” said Urbanczyk. “The cool thing about wood is just one piece changes the whole feel of the home. It makes it cozy.”
For Urbanczyk, it’s the love of woodworking that inspires what she does.
“YOU CAN’T GET MORE TEXAS THAN A PECAN TREE.”
She picks the pecan tree as her favorite to work with, thanks to its variations in coloration and gradation, plus the ease with which it takes shape. “Pecans grow beautifully. With aging, they get a lot of grain and spalting in them, and it’s just kind of a little art surprise when you open them up. Nature’s little art tree. It’s pure Texas. You can’t get more Texas than a pecan tree.”
That Lone Star pride remains at the heart of their work at Urban Tree Company. “We just want folks to know we’re pure Texas. If you use our woods, you’re getting a piece of Texas history. And it’s all made in our shop by Texas hands. Texas, Texas, Texas. You see my angle.” Urbanczyk laughs.
You can find the Urban Tree Company every third Sunday at The Pearl Farmer’s Market or online at urbantreecompany.shop.

Oak trees stand tall in the hills around us. Their majestic canopies are iconic in these parts, with mighty trunks and branches admired for their strength and resilience— traits shared by the people who live among them. But they face a dangerous pestilence, one that seems to strike like lightning and spread as fast as a summer wildfire. Oak Wilt: a disease always poised to devastate the region's cherished oaks.
All hope is not lost, however, according to two local experts. David Touchon is the Land Manager at Cibolo Center for Conservation, and Kevin Belter is a Board-Certified Master Arborist and president of Arbor Care and Consulting. These two men began combatting the scourge of Oak Wilt via different paths, but their passion for preserving the natural beauty of our landscapes is very much the same.
Belter says diversity is vital. “We need to plant non-oaks. All oaks are susceptible, so diversification of tree species on a property will increase the value of that property.” Or as Touchon puts it, “I always say the wilder and the woolier, the better.”
Oak Wilt takes hold when trees are stressed and vulnerable. The fungus Bretziella fagacearum lives in the vascular tissue of the trees and invades when living tissue is exposed, often by pruning, a beetle feeding on sap, or a deer rubbing against the trunk. Once inside, the fungus disrupts the tree's water-conducting vessels, leading to wilting and eventually death.
The Texas Hill Country's warm and arid climate creates favorable conditions for Oak Wilt development. Prolonged drought and sudden freezing can weaken trees, making them more susceptible to infection.
Recognizing the symptoms of Oak Wilt is crucial for early intervention. Infected trees often exhibit wilting or browning of leaves, starting at the top of the canopy and progressing downward. A distinct characteristic is the rapid discoloration of leaf veins, resulting in a browning pattern that resembles a lightning strike (see Belter’s website for a gallery of Oak Wilt images). As the disease advances, affected trees may shed their leaves prematurely, compounding the threat to the oak population.
CONTINUED >
Touchon says it can sometimes be difficult to conclusively identify Oak Wilt on your own, so you should always enlist the help of a professional before taking action. He says the “spline test” can help you know if a tree is dead or just dormant, “You get a branch and bend it down about three inches. If it cleanly breaks, snaps, dead. But just a bit of moisture… and then if it springs back, there's still moisture in there.” This test can’t tell you why a branch may be dead, so talk to a professional if you’re concerned about infection. Once it has been positively diagnosed, prevention and management become essential strategies because there is no cure.
Preventing the spread of Oak Wilt involves a combination of proactive measures. One primary strategy that Touchon advocates is to avoid pruning oak trees during the growing season, typically from
February to June, when the beetles that transmit the fungus are most active. If pruning is necessary, it should be done during the dormant season, from July to January, to minimize infection risk.
But pruning practices can’t prevent all infections. “People talk about a lot about paint,” Belter says. “The massive problem with that is all the non-manmade wounds that will never get painted.” He says it’s important to eliminate spore-producing oaks prior to fungal mat formation. Fungicide injections can be effective in protecting valuable, healthy trees. However, the use of fungicides is not a one-size-fitsall solution and must be approached with careful consideration. Touchon says that some natural options—like sprinkling dried molasses around the base of a tree—can be helpful by improving the diversity of organisms in the soil, which helps the trees maintain overall health.
Ultimately, a united community effort is vital for effective Oak Wilt management. Local authorities, arborists, and residents must collaborate to raise awareness and implement preventive measures. Community workshops and educational programs can empower residents to identify symptoms, report potential cases, and implement best practices in Oak Wilt prevention. City- and state-run programs can help homeowners understand the best strategies to protect their land, and some will help offset the cost of removing highly susceptible trees from people’s property.
Touchon believes that nurturing a healthy, robust, native ecosystem will go a long way toward reducing the threat of Oak Wilt in the future. He and Belter agree that keeping various plants in and among our oaks will lead to a more robust, more beautiful Hill Country in the long run. As Touchon says, “Stop clearing so much. Leave some green on the ground and above you. You always say health through a nice mosaic.”

As we begin to say goodbye to colder temperatures and look ahead to warmer months, crafting a successful spring and summer garden requires thoughtful planning and strategic execution. Luckily, Justin Fyffe, the garden master at Cibolo Nature Center, is here to help.
Whether you are a seasoned gardening pro or this is your first attempt at horticulture, it’s essential to have a plan. First, think about what type of space you have, and how much time you have to care for it. Think about your garden’s location relative to the sun, as this will determine what plants, fruits, or vegetables grow best in your space. Most importantly, Fyffe says, “Don’t overdo it!” Start small and as your knowledge grows, so can your garden.
The magic of mulch, compost, and fertilizers cannot be overstated. Consider making your own compost tea, something Fyffe did quite easily by simply using excess comfrey, a bucket, and water. Utilizing any green nitrogenous plant material will make for a nutrient-rich blend. Top off your soil with fresh compost or liquid fertilizers, sealing the deal with a protective layer of mulch.
Testing your soil is a critical step in preparing for a successful spring garden. Local nurseries often provide a way to test your soil, or you can explore easy ways to do it at home. Armed with this knowledge, adjust your soil to create an optimal environment for your plants.
As the season changes into spring, focus on seed and transplant selection. Delve into cool-season plants such as Swiss chard, leafy greens, radishes, and strawberries. “The sooner, the better” on these, Fyffe explains. He says that while they don’t have a long season, they “can be a great jumpstart to a bountiful garden.”
CONTINUED >
As the weather warms, it’s a great time to think about what will go into the ground following the Hill Country’s very short spring season. Bush beans, cucumbers, summer squash, and tomatoes are excellent choices, but Fyffe always suggests getting advice from your local nursery for specific recommendations. This is also an ideal time to take any successful plant’s new and emerging growth and either divide it into new areas or share it with friends and neighbors.
Once your garden is well underway, ensure its health by checking for pests and weeds. It’s a common challenge, and there’s no shame in facing it. Develop a game plan to tackle these issues as they arise, maintaining the beauty and productivity of your garden.
With these steps, your garden can not only survive but thrive throughout the spring and summer seasons.
If you’re ever in the vicinity of Cibolo’s Farmers Market, stop by to see Justin and ask any questions you have about plants—he’s always happy to help make your thumb a little greener.

It’s usually a sleepy community of less than 100 year-round residents. But Round Top, Texas, transforms into a bustling hub of activity twice a year for the fall and spring antique shows. Pastures typically dotted with cows are cleared and mowed as this small town becomes the epicenter of the biggest treasure hunt in the country. The Round Top Antiques Show has garnered national attention; it’s been featured on popular home and design programs like Fixer Upper and Why the Heck Did I Buy This House?!. Drawing crowds of thousands, it has become a must-visit destination for vintage enthusiasts and design aficionados.
There’s definitely a learning curve for the uninitiated. Round Top's antique show is not a singular event but a collection of dozens of shows stretching over 20 miles, each with its own opening days, entrance fees, and distinct selection of merchandise. The sheer number of venues, vendors, and items can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start.
For those who enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the excitement of a great bargain, the fields of Warrenton offer an unparalleled selection. Regardless of your budget or style, something will speak to every shopper. Karla Hinze, owner of the Campbell Building in Warrenton, explains: “You can find light fixtures or furniture for home remodels, taxidermy, neon signs, great art, custom Louis Vuittons, home furnishings, handmade soaps, clothing, plants, vintage furs, and beautiful jewelry.” In addition to the shopping, Warrenton boasts a festival-like atmosphere with live music spilling from barns next to food trucks and tents selling margaritas, beer, and mimosas.
For the most discerning shoppers, Marburger Farm Antique Show provides a curated experience with air-conditioned restrooms, a food court, parking shuttles, and complimentary Wi-Fi, making the shopping experience comfortable for the entire day. The show features artful displays, strict rules for dealers, each with their own aesthetic, and high-end antiques worldwide. It’s not unusual to spot a celebrity or highend designer exploring the booths here.
Timing is critical for those seeking the finest finds and best deals regardless of where you shop. The widest selection is available at the show's beginning, while some of the best deals are often found towards the end.
Tracy Blacketer, show manager of Marburger Farms, encourages shoppers to interact with dealers. “Our dealers know all the stories and history and can guide you in finding exactly what you need — or even what you didn't know you needed. Ask for input and advice; many of our dealers are interior designers, which makes them a great resource of inspiration, expertise, and help.”
Negotiation is welcome, especially when purchasing multiple items. Robin Cathey, a dealer in Bar W Fields in Warrenton, suggests, “Cash is king! Some dealers don’t have great cell service, so they can’t take credit cards. Some dealers may be able to haggle on a price, and others can’t or won’t. But whichever you run into, always be courteous.”
Hinze says to make the most of your trip, “I recommend coming early. We open at 9:00 am every day during the show. You can get good parking and hit the ground running.”
Dress appropriately for the outdoor setting with closed-toed shoes and layers to tackle the unpredictable weather and uneven terrain. Blacketer laughs, “This is a cow pasture in Texas, after all!” Round Top is known for cowboy boots and creative, bohemian outfits, but ultimately, all the veteran shoppers and dealers agree that sensibility reigns. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and a crossbody purse or backpack to carry essentials and small purchases.
CONTINUED >
Red BarnCathey suggests practical tips, “Drop a pin on Google Maps to remember where you parked and mark any favorite booths you want to return to. Make sure to stay hydrated—you can bring your own food and drinks in the fields.”
The area offers several luxe and quirky lodging options and surprisingly elevated dining establishments for those looking to extend their trips. However, book in advance as reservations fill up quickly. Hinze offers insight for a more prolonged visit: “There is so much to see, so, if possible, allow yourself more than just a day of shopping. Zapp Hall Prom is a must if you find yourself in Warrenton on the last Thursday of the show! It’s unlike anything else with people dressed in costumes, live music, and shopping after dark.”
Even if you don't make a purchase, embrace the holistic experience, revel in live music, and explore the unexpected; the energy and browsing alone are sure to spark inspiration for styling and DIY projects. So whether you're searching for the perfect piece or are simply eager for a unique adventure, the Round Top Antiques Show promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Texas's antique country. As Blacketer puts it, "It is not just an antique show; it's a road trip destination!"

THE ONLY SOURDOUGH STARTER YOU’LL EVER NEED
ARTICLE BY TAYLOR AVILA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISONTAYLOR AVILA • @TAYLORMADEBTX
I’m a wife, homeschooling mama to our 7-year-old and 2-year-old twins, and a full-time sourdough aficionado! I learned how to make traditional sourdough bread less than a year ago and enjoy sharing my passion for baking with our community.
Making sourdough bread is a labor of love. With just two ingredients, a complex dance between chemistry and biology brings to life a delicious bread that your family and friends will crave. In fact, a solid sourdough starter is a gift that keeps on giving. While there’s a science to starter culture, it is still very much an art. If it dies out or doesn’t work, keep going, and soon, you’ll be baking bread your loved ones can’t get enough of!
Remember that we’re thinking about mass, not volume, in this recipe. I use grams to weigh my starter throughout the process, so keep your food scale handy.
1. In a glass jar, combine 100g of bottled water (never use tap or well water) and 100g of unbleached bread flour. You can also use rye flour to kick-start the process. Cover and leave in a warm, dark place.
2. Feed your starter twice daily (roughly 12 hours apart) with a 1:1 ratio of flour and water that weighs half your total sourdough mass. For example, if you have 300g of starter at feeding time, you’ll add 75g of water and 75g of flour (150g total). After five to seven days, when it's bubbly and active, cut feedings to once per day.
3. Your starter is ready when your mixture doubles in volume three to five hours after feeding. It can take up to two weeks to mature your starter, depending on the temperature in your home, humidity, and flour type.

“Kimberly’s approach to health and healing is revolutionary in the world of naturopathy. She is extremely attentive to your concerns and truly cares about her patients. Her treatments allow for a much faster and more direct healing process. I have done homeopathy and naturopathy for decades and this is a faster and more comprehensive system. I have finally received answers to health issues that no doctors or specialists were able to answer. Even better, I have a treatment plan to attack the issues. I have already seen major progress in my health. My family members have also seen improvements. I highly recommend Kimberly and we are very grateful to have found her!” -Shelly

What’s the secret to a happy, healthy, and long life? Believe it or not, it’s actually quite simple: There are no secret ingredients, no sizable expenditures, and absolutely zero manufactured elements of any kind. Dive in with us as we share insights from our interview with the internationally renowned Blue Zones Founder, National Geographic Explorer, and award-winning journalist who is revolutionizing the way Americans make choices that can lead to living your best life.
For over twenty years, Dan Buettner has been fully committed to studying the health and longevity of Americans as well as influencing the proper and attainable health-centric environments our communities should embody. What started with identifying five “blue zones” around the world where people are both living longer as well as enjoying a higher quality of life in their elder years has now also evolved into proactively creating eco-systems where our communities engage in setting the standard for clean health.
Buettner’s first cookbook, The Blue Zones Kitchen, is a fantastic resource featuring ingredients and cooking methods that can increase longevity, wellness, and mental health. The recipes also include lifestyle tips such as proper portion sizes and the best times to eat dinner. Plus, check out his additional seven books that dig deep into the exact foods you should eat to how your circle of friends and family can influence your quality of life.
Every time you go out to eat, you will consume an extra 300 calories that are laden with more sodium, sugar, and oil than eating at home. “Get your hands on a plant-based cookbook, pick a dozen recipes, and cook those with your family on Sundays. If you make the effort to cook it with your family, you will gain the skills and learn to make some good and whole food plant-based recipes.”
