Director’s Note
As someone whose career path has landed me in many an overnight lodging, I have always been fascinated by these very different, oftentimes, oddly-shaped facsimiles of home. Who are the people that inhabit these spaces? What are the tensions brought about by their private lives, that find their way into these public locations? This mode of questioning not only fueled my interest in directing this work, but it also brought to mind the incomparable Pat Benatar who once graced us with the lyric, “Love is a Battlefield.” This is a universal truth explored by Neil Simon in his 1976 comedy California Suite. In the play, the complications of family, society, wealth, and fame are entangled within the tried-andtrue tapestry of…love. You are about to see four vignettes, or, small episodes, in which this enviable cast and crew tell the stories of visitors from vastly different walks, grappling with issues of parenthood, trust, heartache, and friendship. Set in the world-renowned Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, California, this offering will have us traveling from the 1940s to the 1970s in order to highlight the timeless nature of being at odds, being in unity, and being someone other than yourself, when you’re far from home.

Their most recent directorial offering was The Importance of Being Earnest. Some of their favorite roles played include Christopher in Blue/Orange, Albert in Clybourne Park, Touchstone in As You Like It, Lord Longeville in Love’s Labours Lost, Selsdon in Noises Off, and Actor in Nassim Soleimanpour’s White Rabbit; Red Rabbit. Recently their play, The Whites Explain It All, was selected as the full-length play for the 2023 Region III Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. When not seeing to the aforementioned undertakings, Quincy is writing a new play entitled, Theatre Kids.
