Alfred Uhry

Alfred Uhry has the distinguishing honor of being the only American writer to win a Pulitzer Prize, an Oscar award and a Tony award. A graduate of Brown University, Uhry left his native Atlanta for the bright lights of New York City as a newlywed in 1959 to become a lyricist. Struggling to make ends meet for almost twenty years, he hit success in 1976 with "The Robber Bridegroom"- a bawdy Southern fairy tale based on a Eudora Welty story for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical. (The Tony went to the writers of "A Chorus Line.") Ten years later he wrote his first play, the smash hit, Pulitzer Prizewinning "Driving Miss Daisy". He would later win an Oscar for the movie adaptation starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. Soon after, the Olympic Games' Cultural Olympiad commissioned Uhry to write a play for the Summer 1996 Olympics in his hometown of Atlanta. Thus the Tony Awardwinning "Last Night of Ballyhoo" was born. Known for writing charming, engaging yet somewhat quirky Southern characters, Mr. Uhry's latest endeavor, "Parade" is a darker look at the nuances and history of the South. This chilling true-life story of the lynching of Leo Frank won a second Tony award for Mr. Uhry as Best Book of a Musical in 1999.

Jason Robert Brown

JASON ROBERT BROWN is the ultimate multi-hyphenate - an equally skilled composer, lyricist, conductor, arranger, orchestrator, director and performer - best known for his dazzling scores to several of the most renowned musicals of our time, including the generation-definingThe Last Five Years, his debut song cycle Songs for a New World, and the seminal Parade, for which he won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Score.

Jason Robert Brown has been hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and his “extraordinary, jubilant theater music” (Chicago Tribune) has been heard all over the world, whether in one of the hundreds of productions of his musicals every year or in his own incendiary live performances. The New York Times refers to Jason as “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical.” Jason’s score for The Bridges of Madison County, a musical adapted with Marsha Norman from the bestselling novel, received two Tony Awards (for Best Score and Orchestrations).

Honeymoon In Vegas, based on Andrew Bergman’s film, opened on Broadway in 2015 following a triumphant production at Paper

Mill Playhouse. A film version of his epochal Off-Broadway musical The Last Five Years was released in 2015, starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan and directed by Richard LaGravenese. His major musicals as composer and lyricist include: 13, written with Robert Horn and Dan Elish, which opened on Broadway in 2008 and was subsequently directed by the composer for its West End premiere in 2012; The Last Five Years, which was cited as one of Time Magazine’s 10 Best of 2001 and won Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics (and was later directed by the composer in its record-breaking Off-Broadway run at Second Stage Theatre in 2013); Parade, written with Alfred Uhry and directed by Harold Prince, which won both the Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Musical, as well as garnering Jason the Tony Award for Original Score; and Songs for a New World, a theatrical song cycle directed by Daisy Prince, which has since been seen in hundreds of productions around the world since its 1995 Off-Broadway debut, including a celebrated revival at New York’s City Center in the summer of 2018. Parade was also the subject of a major revival directed by Rob Ashford, first at London’s Donmar Warehouse and then at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

Jason conducted his orchestral adaptation of E.B. White’s novel The Trumpet of the Swan with the National Symphony Orchestra, and recorded the score for PS Classics. Future projects include a new chamber musical created with Daisy Prince and Jonathan Marc Sherman calledThe Connector; an adaptation of Lilian Lee’s Farewell My Concubine, created with Kenneth Lin and Moisés Kaufman; and a collaboration with Billy Crystal, Amanda Green, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel on a musical of Mr. Saturday Night. Jason is the winner of the 2018 Louis Auchincloss Prize, the 2002 Kleban Award for Outstanding Lyrics and the 1996 Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Foundation Award for Musical Theatre. Jason’s songs, including the cabaret standard “Stars and the Moon,” have been performed and recorded by Ariana Grande, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Porter, Betty Buckley, Renée Fleming, Jon Hendricks and many others, and his song “Someone To Fall Back On” was featured in the Walden Media film, Bandslam.

As a soloist or with his band The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, Jason has performed concerts around the world. For the past four years (and ongoing), his monthly soldout performances at New York’s SubCulture have featured many of the music and theater world’s

SubCulture have featured many of the music and theater world’s most extraordinary performers. His newest collection, “How We React and How We Recover”, was released in June 2018 on Ghostlight Records. His previous solo album, “Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes”, was named one of Amazon.com’s best of 2005, and is available from Sh-K-Boom Records. Jason’s 2012 concert with Anika Noni Rose was broadcast on PBS, and he was the featured soloist for a live episode of Friday Night Is Music Night, broadcast live from the London Palladium and featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra. His collaboration with singer Lauren Kennedy, “Songs of Jason Robert Brown”, is available on PS Classics. Jason is also the composer of the incidental music for the Broadway revival of You Can’t Take It With You, David Lindsay-Abaire’s Kimberly Akimbo and Fuddy Meers, and Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery, and he was a Tony Award nominee for his contributions to the score of Urban Cowboy the Musical. He has also contributed music to the hit Nickelodeon television series, The Wonder Pets as well as Sesame Street. Jason spent ten years teaching at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, and has also taught at Harvard University, Princeton University and Emerson College.

For the musical Prince of Broadway, a celebration of the career of his mentor Harold Prince, Jason was the musical supervisor and arranger. Other New York credits as conductor and arranger include Urban Cowboy the Musical on Broadway; Dinah Was, offBroadway and on national tour; When Pigs Fly”off-Broadway; William Finn’s A New Brain at Lincoln Center Theater; the 1992 tribute to Stephen Sondheim at Carnegie Hall (recorded by RCA Victor); Yoko Ono’s New York Rock, at the WPA Theatre; and Michael John LaChiusa’s The Petrified Princ” at the Public Theatre. Jason orchestrated Andrew Lippa’s john and jen, Off-Broadway at Lamb’s Theatre. Additionally, Jason served as the orchestrator and arranger of Charles Strouse and Lee Adams’s score for a proposed musical of Star Wars. Jason has conducted and created arrangements and orchestrations for Liza Minnelli, John Pizzarelli, and Michael Feinstein, among many others.

Jason studied composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., with Samuel Adler, Christopher Rouse, and Joseph Schwantner. He lives with his wife, composer Georgia Stitt, and their daughters in New York City. Jason is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and the American Federation of Musicians Local 802. Hello and welcome to Parade.

Thank you for joining us as this company of talented actors step back in to the past. The story of Parade is first and foremost a love story. Leo and Lucille are a couple whose love grows in the most horrendous of circumstances. In a world filled with hate and injustice, their love is strong and pure. They do go through their own difficulties along the way but in the end, love perseveres, even if the outcome is not what they intended.

The story of Leo Frank in 1913 is not that far from stories we still hear today. Political corruption and the influence of politics on the justice system and its influence on the people are a large part of this story. Social media of the time, the newspaper, was reporting facts that were untrue or sensationalized and created a world in which fact and fiction were not always easy to distinguish. Social, racial, and religious injustice are a huge part of Leo’s story and taint the outcome. Men in power did horrible things to gain more power and prestige so they could create the outcome they wanted and thought they deserved no matter who it might hurt or how it might affect society. Good came from this bad situation, in this case the Anti-Defamation League was formed with a mission to stop the defamation of Jewish people and to secure safe and fair treatment for all. History gives us many lessons and if we do not look back from time to time, we tend to miss the messages that it has sent.

The hope is that this evening of theatre will fill you with emotions, questions, thoughts, and give you a little insight into a true story that we must never forget so that it is not repeated.

Thank you and we hope you are entertained and enlightened by tonight’s performance.

This performance will have a 15 minute intermission.

Please no photo taking during this performance. The video and/or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited.

This performance will include use of pulsing lights, waterbased haze, use of racial slurs, antisemitism, a depiction of a hanging, references and suggestions of sexual assault, and simulated weapons.

Paige (They/She) is excited to be joining the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! Paige graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Design & Production and Animation, and has previously volunteered with the Fort Wayne Youtheatre as a high school intern. When not working on shows, they love to knit, build miniatures and play board games with friends.

Ryan Burke (Scenic Carpenter)

Ryan is a Michigan native from the Croswell Opera House in Adrian. After a summer at the Tibbits Opera House, he has spent the rest of his career in the Kalamazoo Civic scene shop. Whether it’s building scenery or singing and dancing backstage, Ryan isn’t alive until the house is open and the first cue is called. He is a kind soul and wonderful friend; 100% dedicated to the new vision and core values of the Civic Theatre. You’ll like this guy.

Jamie Chapin (Properties Artisan)

Jamie graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2021 with a Bachelor’s in Entertainment Design & Technology. They have worked with Cedar Point: Live Entertainment (2022) and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis (2023) since graduation. Some of their favorite hobbies are crocheting, drawing, and playing Dungeons & Dragons.

The Civic Production Team

Stacey Jaeger

(Production Stage Manager)

Stacey is excited to have been hired at the Civic after her year as an intern. Originally from Iowa, where she grew up doing all things theatre, Stacey finished school at Beloit College before joining the Civic staff in 2021. Some of her favorite stage management experiences are productions of Twelfth Night in her hometown, The Moors at Beloit, and Murder on the Orient Express at the Civic. She’d like to thank her family for helping her get settled in the Kalamazoo area and a few of her mentors: Marina Bergenstock, Grant Freeman, Lisa Brannan, and Alicia Bailey.

Olivia Johnston (Stage Manager)

Olivia Johnston (she/they) is thrilled to be continuing their Stage Manager journey here at the Civic. Olivia enjoys the behind-the-scenes aspects of theater and is ready to lend their talents as Stage Manager for Big Fish. They have enjoyed working with all the cast and crew and hope that you enjoy the magic they have created. This will be Olivia’s first production with the Kalamazoo Civic Theater and their ninth production as Stage Manager overall.

Elaine Kauffman

(Resident Costume Designer)

Elaine first joined the Civic staff in 1998 as our Costume Designer. She left to create her own custom clothing design business, Elaine K Designs which she has run for the past 18 years. She returned to the Civic as

Costume Designer in 2018. She graduated from WMU with a degree in Fashion Design and has over 25 years of professional costume design working at almost every theatre in the Kalamazoo area including the Barn Theatre, 3-D Touring Productions, WMU Dance Dept., WMU Opera, Kalamazoo College Theatre Dept., Farmers Alley Theatre and many other freelance costume design projects. One of her favorite costuming experiences was creating the “creature costume” for a horror movie filmed in Kalamazoo. Outside of the theatre, Elaine enjoys the art of cheese making!

David Kyhn

(Resident Scenic Artist)

David has served on the Civic s staff since the summer of 2000. Over that time, it has been his pleasure to work with the Civic’s passionate volunteers and the skillful, dedicated staff. He has especially enjoyed mentoring and learning from so many bright interns at the beginning of their careers. The Civic has provided countless opportunities for him to grow as an artist, exploring new ideas, technologies, and aesthetics, and he looks forward to future wonder and discovery with the vibrant Civic community.

Dominic Lannon (he/him) has been captivated by storytelling for most of his life. Whether building sets, tinkering with puppets, or smoothing out a script, he loves nothing more than successfully bringing a story to life. He received a BA in Theatre from Hamilton College in 2022 and has since worked as a scenic carpenter at Oak Park Festival Theatre and Circle Theatre. He’s thrilled to be working at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre and looking forward to learning the skills to be a Technical Director! When he isn’t working, he spends his time reading folk tales, playing card games, and keeping in touch with his cats.

Christopher Lewis (Resident Properties Master)

Christopher is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a B.A. in Fine Arts. He joined the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre staff in 2008 as a scenic carpenter. In May of 2023, he became the Resident Properties Master. Some of his favorite Civic productions are Jekyll & Hyde, The Who’s Tommy, The Borrowers, Once on this Island, Xanadu, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Christopher’s hobbies include building prop replicas, designing and constructing puppets, blacksmithing, and playing tabletop games.

Delaney McKenzie (Resident Lighting Designer)

Delaney joined the Civic staff in 2018 as the Master Electrician and became the Resident Lighting and Sound Designer in 2020. She earned her BS in Theater: Design and Technology at Northwest Missouri State University and a MFA in Theater at Southern Illinois University where she specialized in Lighting Design. She has worked with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Endstation Theater Company, McLeod Summer Playhouse, and as Lead Lighting Technician at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Delaney has a passion for Jesus, music, and the arts, spending much of her time outside of the Civic dedicated to worship and creating beautiful things. She is a painter and a prolific fiber artist, often seen with a set of needles or crochet hook between meetings or backstage during performances.

Jacob Miller (Scenic Carpenter)

Jacob graduated Grand Valley State University in 2020, earning his BA in Theatre and History and a minor in Music. He has worked at the Croswell Opera House, and the theatres at both Grandville and Vicksburg High School. In 2021, he made his Civic debut in The Tempest and worked as a Teaching Artist. In his free time Jacob still loves to act, traveling between Three Rivers and Grand Rapids for various projects.

The Civic Production Team

Phillip A. Miller (Technical Director)

Phillip has worked on every production we have produced since he joined the Civic staff in 2000. Prior to his arrival at the Civic, Phillip served as the Assistant Technical Director at the Barn Theatre and as a draftsman for the Children’s Theatre Company and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, Phillip was the Technical Assistant at Western Michigan University, while earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Design and Technical Production.

Justin Muse (Scenic Design Associate)

Justin is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a BFA in Theater Design and Production. He is excited to be joining the Civic team as an intern for the 2022-23 season. Past designs include Radium Girls, Bare: A pop Opera, and Don Pasquale.

Jacob Myny (Resident Sound Designer)

Jacob is excited for his very first season with the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! Jacob is the resident sound designer here and comes from South Haven, MI. Jacob earned his BFA degree from Western Michigan University Theatre Department. He has traveled around working in New Hampshire, Florida, and Michigan. Some of his favorite previous works include The Cake (The Naples Players), The Fantastics (Jeans Playhouse), and Much A Do About Nothing (Hope Summer Repertory Theatre). She can’t wait to bring that experience with her to the Civic.

Camille Van Dien (Costume Design Intern)

My name is Camille Van Dien, I am the current Costume Design Intern at the Kalamazoo Civic. Before coming to the Civic, I went to college at Grand Valley State University where I studied theatre and got my bachelor’s degree in 2021.
