About the Author
Lisa Kron has been writing and performing theater since coming to New York from Michigan in 1984. Her play Well opened to critical acclaim on Broadway at the Longacre Theater in March of 2006 and received two Tony nominations. It previously premiered at the Public Theater in spring 2004 and was listed among the year’s best plays by the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Newark Star Ledger, Backstage and the Advocate, followed by an acclaimed run at A.C.T. in San Francisco. Her play 2.5 Minute Ride premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in 1996 and then in New York at the Public Theater in 1999 and has toured extensively to theaters including the American Repertory Theatre, Hartford Stage, the London Barbican and Theater Company Rinkogun in Japan. It received an OBIE Award, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations, L.A. Drama-Logue and GLAAD Media Awards and was named the best autobiographical show of 1999 by New York Press. Kron’s other plays include 101 Humiliating Stories (Drama Desk nomination) and Martha, which she co-wrote with and for choreographer/performer Richard Move. Kron is also a founding member of the OBIE and Bessie Award-winning theater company the Five Lesbian Brothers, whose plays Oedipus at Palm Springs, Brave Smiles, Brides of the Moon and The Secretaries have all been produced by New York Theater Workshop and have been performed widely both nationally and internationally by the Brothers and by other companies. Kron is the recipient of the Cal Arts/Alpert Award, grants from the Creative Capital Foundation and New York Foundation for the Arts and playwriting fellowships from NEA/TCG, the Guggenheim Foundation and the Lucille Lortel Foundation. She teaches playwriting at the Yale Drama School.
Director’s Note
Welcome to a truly unique theatrical experience. Tonight’s production will be an emotional journey exploring a multitude of topics including sickness vs wellness, relationships, and racial integration, among others. Why are some people sick and others are well? Why do some people get sick and seem to heal much quicker and more completely than others? Furthermore, how are all of these topics connected and what are the effects that they have on each other? I’d like to prepare you to experience a wide variety of emotions this evening. You may find yourself laughing hysterically at some points and tearing up at others. You may also experience fear or anger at certain points, or quite possibly, confusion. I would not be able to tell you for certain what emotions you will be feeling throughout the evening, as it will be a different experience for every one of you. But the one thing that I will say is that it is you, the audience, that is the all important seventh character in this production, as you will see; and so I invite you all to open your hearts and your minds and just experience for yourself this theatrical exploration from Kalamazoo College Alum, Lisa Kron. Lastly, I’d like to thank a wonderfully talented company, who have been so kind-hearted, passionate, and thoughtful during this entire process. Thank you all for sharing your gifts with the community, and I thank the community for coming out and helping us make this production complete. I sincerely hope you all enjoy our creation.
Many thanks,
David Mahon, Director

Director ........................................................................................... David Mahon
Micha is ecstatic to be back on stage after spending the end of last season throwing shadow puppets and quick costume changes. She is no stranger to the stage but is thrilled to call the Civic home. Micha’s favorite roles include Gussie in “Cookin’ with Gus”, Sybil in “Noel Coward’s Private Lives”, and Christine in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”. When not participating in theatrical endeavors, Micha works in accounting by day and spends countless hours taking in kid sports and music in the evenings. She would like to thank her family and friends for always being such great support!
Michael Robertson II
Coming from Nashville, Tennessee, Michael is a senior undergraduate student at Kalamazoo College who majors in Economics and minors in English and Theatre Arts. This is his first performance at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. Formerly a collegiate football player at K, Michael started acting in his sophomore year with “Next to Normal” being his first show at the Festival Playhouse. Ever since then, he has performed in three shows with the Festival Playhouse. Aside from theatre, Michael enjoys traveling, Saturday Night Live, and spending time with loved ones and friends. He is extremely grateful for working with everyone on this show and making his civic debut.
Krista Roberson
Krista Roberson is happy to return to the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre stage. Had made her Civic debut in the show “Clybourne Park (2023)”. Krista has also worked with All Ears Theatre, Queer Theatre Kalamazoo and other smaller groups. Her last show being “Snow White & Rose Red” with All Ears. This has been one of the most, but happily challenging shows she’s done. She would like to thank all her family and friends for their support.
Courtney Stewart
Courtney is so excited, and so humbled, by the opportunity to help tell this unique story. Prior to this production, she’s enjoyed performing on community stages in Kalamazoo, Cedar Springs, Paw Paw and Allegan. Some favorite past roles include Vera Claythorne, Leon Trotsky, and Marvalyn & Rhonda of Maine. When she isn’t working her theatrical muscles, Courtney’s flexing her creative ones as a Speech-Language Pathologist. She would like to thank her husband and daughters for their daily love and support, and her friends for their encouragement. This performance is dedicated to all of the perfectly imperfect people out there, and the beautifully flawed relationships that give their lives meaning. “Thank you all so much for coming”!
Meet the Cast
Laura VanOrman
Laura has been happily volunteering at the Civic for nearly 10 years. She loves to work backstage but is really excited to get on stage again. She considers her training to come from the blessing of being a friend, wife, and mother. Thank you to my wonderful family for supporting me!
Tyler Walker
Tyler Walker has participated in numerous productions with the Civic through the youth theater while in middle and high school. However this is his first production in over 8 years, and his first production as an adult. Tyler works for Big Brothers Big Sisters staying involved with the surrounding community and recruiting mentors to volunteer. He is also a Big Brother himself through the program. Returning to the Civic has been a goal for Tyler since graduating from Western Michigan University in 2021. During his free time he flexes his acting skills playing Dungeons & Dragons with his friends. As well as spending time with his wonderful wife, Hannah.

Other favorite roles include Peter in The Diary of Anne Frank, James Keller in The Miracle Worker, Ensemble in A Christmas Story: The Musical, Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, and Reverend Samuel Parris in The Crucible, just to name a few. By day, David is a Behavioral Technician with Spectrum Autism Center. He thanks his family and friends for their continued love and support.
Gari Voss
Gari Voss (Stage Manager) has volunteered in various roles behind the scenes with the Civic since 2012 and still loves the excitement of being part of the company as a production prepares for opening night. No matter the position, being as part of quality theatre is an honor. She would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who put their hearts, talents, and time into theatre, and especially this cast and crew. “Kudos to all those who have kept the Civic vibrant. We’re back!”
Olivia Johnston
Olivia Johnston (she/they) is thrilled to be continuing their Stage Manager journey here at the Civic. Olivia enjoys the behind-the-scenes aspects of theater and is ready to lend their talents as Stage Manager for this production. They have enjoyed working with all the cast and crew and hope that you enjoy the magic they have created.
Nicholas Basak
Way back when my spark of passion for tech, started when I did spotlights for Portage Northern’s high schools production of White Christmas. I utilize that passion to help enrich the community that I live in by volunteering with Kalamazoo civic with there productions.
Mike Nangle
Mike is a long time Civic volunteer, thrilled to be working with this amazing company on “Well”. He excited to be backstage once again this season after working crew for “Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella”
Diane Vasold-Trupiano
Diane has worked behind the scenes on a number of our productions and made her onstage debut in The Pirates of Penzance: In Concert. Her first and favorite crew production was Les Misérables. Diane also loves being outside, sailing, the visual arts and working as a docent on gallery tours and museum studies.
Meet the Production Crew
R.J. Soule’
R.J. Soule has been a part of more Civic shows than he can count. He got his start in theatre as a personal dresser for Sandy Bremer in Sugar Babies. R.J. has had many roles throughout his lifetime but his favorites include Marvin in March of the “Falsettos”, Wilbur in “Hairspray” and Tennessee Williams in the one-man play “Confessions of a Nightingale”. When not at the theatre, R.J. can be found on the hiking trails, be it locally or in the mountains.
Kris Tyrrell
Kris Tyrrell moved to Kalamazoo over 50 years ago from her native Chicago to join the Civic’s internship program and never left. Since then, Kris has performed in over 100 roles at virtually every theatre in Kalamazoo as well as serving in every possible role on technical crews. She has helmed productions for our Mainstage, Carver Center Studio, and Parish Theatre, as well as for Whole Art Theatre, and API theatre. Most recently seen in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express as Helen Hubbard, Kris hesitates to choose a favorite role. She has been featured in Arsenic and Old Lace twice, once as a senior in high school and once as a genuine senior. Kris has also played both female roles in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in productions 20 years apart. She was instrumental in establishing the Civic’s Senior Class Reader’s Theatre, including the 2022 production of Leaving Iowa. Kristin is the proud recipient of the Larkin Noble Award, Spirit of the Civic Award, Robert McKenna Award from the Community Theatre Association of Michigan, and Presidential Volunteer Service Award – Lifetime Achievement Award.
