Director’s Note
D.W. Gregory’s Radium Girls tells the true story of the young women who worked for the U.S. Radium Corporation in Orange, NJ, in the 1910s and 20s, painting watch dials with luminescent radium paint. Exposed to the substance on a regular basis without being apprised of, or protected from, its highly toxic nature, many of the dialpainters who worked in this plant—and in similar factories in Illinois and Connecticut—suffered catastrophic and fatal illnesses as a result of their work. First produced in 2000, Gregory’s play is one of many narratives that have brought the story to popular attention in recent years; others include Melanie Marnich’s 2010 play These Shining Lives, Kate Moore’s 2016 nonfiction bestseller The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women, and the 2018 film Radium Girls. What accounts for our ongoing fascination with this moment in American history? Perhaps we are drawn to the story because, despite the tragedy and horror of these events, as well as the vast labor inequities they exposed, the story is also, ultimately, one of triumph against daunting odds.
Not only did the Radium Girls’ highly-publicized battles against the companies that poisoned them inspire further lawsuits and prompt more extensive research into the effects of radium on the human body, but they also contributed to significant reforms in labor laws and workplace protections that benefit us in ways we may take for granted today. Their experiences highlight both how far we’ve come and how far we have left to go. The story of the Radium Girls will be relevant as long as workers in this country or in any other face dangerous conditions that sacrifice their physical or mental wellbeing on the altar of profit. As long as any portion of the human population is allowed to be poisoned for years on end by the air they breathe or the water they drink. As long as factors such as gender identity, sexuality, race, and age make any of us less safe, less valued, or less heard in workplace and healthcare settings.
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the vibrant lives that these young women lived, and the ferocity with which they fought against injustice. We are eager to share this production of Radium Girls with you.

About the Author
D.W. Gregory’s plays frequently explore political issues through a personal lens and with a comedic twist. The New York Times called her “a playwright with a talent to enlighten and provoke” for her most-produced work, Radium Girls, about the famous case of industrial poisoning. Other plays include Memoirs of a Forgotten Man, a National New Play Network rolling world premiere (Contemporary American Theater Festival, Shadowland Stages, New Jersey Repertory Company); Molumby’s Million (Iron Age Theatre), nominated for a Barrymore Award by Theatre Philadelphia; A Thing of Beauty, winner of the Southeastern Theatre Conference’s 2023 Charles M. Getchell New Play Award; The Good Daughter and October 1962 (New Jersey Repertory Company); and a new musical comedy, The Yellow Stocking Play, with composer Steven M. Alper and lyricist Sarah Knapp. Her plays have been developed through the support of AATE, the National New Play Network (NNPN), the Playwrights’ Center, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the HBMG Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. A member of the Dramatists Guild, Gregory is an affiliated writer with the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis and an affiliated artist with NNPN. Gregory also writes for youth theatre (Salvation Road and Penny Candy) and makes occasional appearances as a teaching artist. For five years in a row, Dramatics magazine named Radium Girls among the 10 Most-Produced Plays in American High-School Theatre.

The History Of Radium
Radium (Ra) is a highly radioactive alkaline earth metal naturally found in uranium ores. First discovered in 1898 by Marie Curie, radium was initially hailed as a "wonder element" due to its unique properties and potential applications.
Despite its challenges, the popularity of radium soared in the early 20th century. Its uses ranged from health tonics to medical treatments, but what made radium infamous was the greenish glow it emitted. This radioluminescence - a result of the energy released during radioactive decay- led to its widespread use in luminous paints for watch faces, clocks, aircraft instruments, and other glow-in-the-dark items. Seen as a sign of modern science and progress, it wasn’t until cases like the Radium Girls that the dangers of this “wonder element” became clear.

Marie Curie (1867-1934) was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, sharing it with her husband Pierre and Henri Becquerel. In 1911 she became the first person to win a second Nobel Prize. This time in Chemistry for isolating pure radium.

Life in the Dial Factory
Unlike other factory jobs at the time, dial painting was a secure, well-paid, highly soughtafter job in this era. The employees at the dial factory tended to be creative young women who had a precise eye and a steady hand. Their task required detailed strokes to ensure that numbers and hands on each dial glowed in the dark. To increase precision, women were instructed to use a technique called "lip-pointing," in which they shaped their paintbrushes with their lips to create a fine point before applying the radium paint.

Radium Dial Factory in Orange County, New Jersey, where the story of “Radium Girls” takes place
While the story of the “Radium Girls” is often associated with the United States Radium Corporation in New Jersey, dial painters across the country faced the same deadly consequences. The Radium Dial Company branch in West Ottawa, Illinois, and the Waterbury Clock Company in Waterbury, Connecticut hired thousands of young women like Catherine Donohue, Marie Becker Rossiter, Frances Splettstocher, and Mary Damulis. These girls, inspired by the case in Orange, took legal action against their employers. Between 1926 and 1936, The Waterbury Clock Company issued over $90,000 in workers compensation. Although dial painters in other states sought retribution for their fatal illnesses, those in Ottawa were the only ones "to win state sanctioned compensation for radium poisoning”.

Employees Of The USRC
Grace Fryer (1899-1933) was a driving force behind the awsuit against U.S. Radium Corporation, which ventually helped secure workers' rights and industrial safety standards. Fryer began working at U.S. Radium Corporation when she was 18. After noticing her declining health, including severe dental issues and bone pain, Grace filed a lawsuit in 1927 along with four other women, who would later become known as the “Radium Girls.” The legal battle exposed the dangers of radium poisoning, leading to significant reforms in workplace safety and compensation laws. Grace passed away in 1933 at age 34, but her bravery left a lasting impact on labor rights in America.
Katherine Schaub (1902-1933) was another key player in the story of the Radium Girls. At just 14, Katherine began working at the U.S. Radium Corporation’s factory and where she later became an instructress. Katherine’s health began to decline in 1923, leading to severe dental issues and bone deterioration. Her case revealed the connection between radium exposure and the deadly condition known as radium necrosis. Katherine died in 1933 at age 31. Described as imaginative, Katherine dreamed of becoming a writer and published an excerpt of her memoir. Tragically, the rest of her manuscript was burned by her family after her death.
Dr. Sabin Arnold von Sochocky was an Austrian-born physician and inventor, best known for co-founding the Radium Luminous Material Corporation. He developed “Undark,” a luminous paint using radium, which became widely used on watch dials and military instruments. However, Von Sochocky eventually became a victim of the very substance he helped popularize. He fell ill from radium exposure and developed severe health complications, eventually passing away in 1928 from aplastic anemia.
Justice for the Radium Girls
As the symptoms of radium poisoning progressed, the cause of their ailments became clear: years of working at the radium dial factory and instruction to consume the highly toxic element was killing them. However, it wasn’t until the New Jersey Consumers League chairman Katherine Wiley took on the case that justice for the Radium Girls felt possible. Wiley brought in a statistical expert and began correspondence with scientists, lawyers and representatives at the USRC.
The lawsuits garnered widespread media attention and public support, highlighting the dangers of industrial work and the need for better labor protections. Ultimately, the Radium Girls' fight for justice not only resulted in financial settlements for some of the plaintiffs but also helped raise awareness about the health risks associated with radioactive materials, leading to changes in occupational safety regulations. Their struggle became a pivotal moment in the history of labor rights and environmental health, emphasizing the importance of worker protection and accountability in industries dealing with hazardous substances.
In 1927, Grace Fryer decided to sue the USRC. Raymond Berry, a young Newark attorney, took the case on contingency and filed a lawsuit in a New Jersey court on her behalf. Four former USRC employees - Edna Hussman, Katherine Schaub, and sisters Quinta McDonald and Albina Larice - quickly joined the suit.
Plaintiffs of the trial became known as “The Living Dead”
