Dramaturg Notes Studying the ins and outs of medieval European politics is a process that brings with it many challenges. As in virtually any period of human history, the rules of governance were complex and ever-evolving. Further, the contemporary historian’s understanding of the period is often based on fragmentary and even contradictory sources, in which narratives about the powerful are privileged and fact is not always clearly delineated from conjecture. Nevertheless, two key aspects of royal succession in medieval England may aid in Dramaturg an understanding of the political backdrop of The Lion in Winter. In the late 12th century, while it had become a common practice for firstborn – typically male – children to inherit family titles and properties, the system of primogeniture was not codified law, and exceptions were made with some frequency. As a result, lines of royal succession were often contested, and many rulers had their successors coronated during their own lifetimes in order to bolster the legitimacy of their heirs’ claims. Against this unsteady landscape, the story of Eleanor and Henry began.
Dr. Miriam Hahn Thomas
Eleanor of Aquitaine was possessed of a shrewd and ambitious political mind, and she pursued her goals with dogged determination, nearly till the end of her long life. In 1152, after having initiated and won the annulment of her unhappy marriage to Louis VII of France, Eleanor wed Henry II of England merely weeks later. The couple welcomed eight children between the years of 1153 and 1166, and soon Henry’s attention turned to parceling out lands, titles, and advantageous marriages. Henry’s namesake, appropriately dubbed “Henry the Young King,” was coronated in 1170 in the presence of his father. Peace was short-lived, however, as Henry the Young King, along with his siblings Richard and Geoffrey, grew dissatisfied with his father’s reluctance to relinquish power to his sons. The breaking point came as Henry II began to consider reassigning a portion of his eldest son’s territory to his youngest, John. The young king finally engaged in open revolt against his father in 1173, with the support of Richard and Geoffrey, along with a vengeful Louis VII and Eleanor herself. Eleanor’s betrayal of Henry II is often rendered as one driven by petty jealousy over her husband’s many infidelities, but what limited evidence we have today suggests political rather than personal motivation.
Henry II swiftly put down the revolt and offered a peace to his sons that afforded them financial benefits but no additional ruling power. Eleanor did not fare as well; her husband ordered that she be imprisoned after her capture, and she remained so until his death. Meanwhile, conflicts over lands and titles still brewed between the three boys and their father. While battling for control over the Aquitaine, Henry the Young King fell ill and died in June of 1183, at the age of 28. Suddenly, the question of kingship was back on the table. It is at Christmastime in 1183 that James Goldman’s 1966 play picks up the story of the restless Plantagenets. In The Lion in Winter, Goldman presents us with a meticulously researched story peppered with purposeful anachronisms and metatheatrical allusions reminding us that we are in a theatre, watching a play that is very much in conversation with dramatic worlds created by the Ancient Greeks, Shakespeare, and others. While Goldman’s characters are all based on historical figures and the play turns on actual historical events, much of the world he has created derives from pure invention, speculation, and dramatic maneuvering. For example, there was no Christmas court held in Chinon in 1183; Goldman’s choice to invent this particular gathering places the characters together mere months after Henry the Young King’s death, when the stakes are highest for all involved. Rendered by Goldman, these historical characters are by turns histrionic, hysterically funny, and heartbreaking. In their own ways, each is driven by ambition and a desire for advancement. And in their own ways, each has a deeper, more searching need for meaningful human connection and love. As Eleanor pleads with her sons in one unforgettable monologue, “Can’t we love each other, just a little?” --Dr. Miriam Thomas, Dramaturg
