How do we know if we've made a good match?
People used to say that you had to "punch your weight" in a relationship; what did it mean to seek out someone "suitable" or "appropriate" in Austen's time, over 200 years ago, and what does it mean, today? Is Love still a battlefield, with some people actively seeking a sparring partner? An irresistible force that ultimately will defeat the most immovable object? A game of rules and strategy, where an impulsive false move can land one in a trap, but a bold strike can force a competitor to surrender? Is it about navigating a daunting world as a team, and really, we're just looking for a compatible doubles partner, if the ideal one doesn't actually exist? Perhaps it’s about finding the right person to dance with; the one who apologizes for stepping on our feet, offers a hand at the most crucial time, and keeps coming back to try again, even when we don’t fully know the steps. The one with whom we can learn to take ourselves a little less seriously, even when negotiating the serious business of marriage, and discover the steps together.
Katherine Harte-DeCoux DirectorScene Synopsis
