Acting President

Hello everyone, and welcome to a great year at JCU!

My name’s Amie, and I am currently your acting president for JCUSA.

I started my time in the council last year in the role of post-graduate officer, which I was passionate about as I am currently undertaking my Masters in Global Change Biology and would love to see more services and support for post-grad students. I then stepped into the Vice President position where I could continue to serve students and make a real difference in the organization! I will continue working towards making a more exciting and active atmosphere on campus, engaging with students striving to represent them!

We have had a fantastic start to the year with O’week, with some of our biggest turnouts at events in Cairns that we have seen in the last 5 years. I’m keen to keep this energy going throughout the semester and engage with students through consistent events. With our highest influx of international students since COVID, now is the time to really up the student engagement and improve the life and well-being of students on campus and studying remotely.

One thing I am most excited about in this role is boosting the number of clubs and societies at JCU. Coming from Adelaide and starting at JCU last year, I felt there was a lack of clubs and places where you could find people with similar interests to yours. Since finding a club to join, I have made some amazing friends and people I would never have met otherwise. I want every JCU student to have access to this experience – of connecting to like-minded people in different ways outside of classes. I would encourage everyone with an idea for a club to make it a reality, and at JCUSA we’re here to help make that happen!

With many fresh faces on the student council this year, I am feeling positive and excited for what 2023 has to bring for JCUSA and the student body.

The Editor

Welcome new and returning student to Orientation Week Adventures,

I am Karla and I am the editor of this JCUSA publication. I am a student beginning my fifth year at JCU. I am currently working on an Honours Thesis on Live-Action Role-Play and Climate Change.

The Bullsheet is in the process of looking for new paid contributors for 2023. These journalists, writers, and artists are expected to report on university life and all that impacts it: politics, past and upcoming events, student experiences, and research. We look for work in a variety of formations including but not limited to fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography, drawings, comics, and last but not least memes.

Payment for pieces can range up to 40 dollars.

Not only is contributing to The Bullsheet a great way to connect your work with the student body, but it is an opportunity to gain work experience.

If you are interested send me an email with your work or to simply enquire. I look forward to hearing from you!

Without further ado, I present the Orientation Week Adventures Edition of The Bullsheet, filled with information on a range of student clubs, associations, and societies - Happy reading!

Elected Student Council

1. What is one of the favourite aspects of your job?

2. Do you have a personal goal for yourself this semester?

President

1. One of my favourite aspects that I have enjoyed so far as Environmental Officer is bringing forward to JCU and JCUSA more Indigneous Ecological Ideas and Engagement, where this was not really explored to the extent I have been doing so far.

2. I have a few personal goals I would like to achieve this semester. My first goal is to pass my one subject for the semester and my second goal is focusing on hosting Eco-awareness events/activities such as a Tree Planting Day and planting bush tucker medicines in our JCU Community Gardens both Cairns and Townsville.

Cairns Campus Officer

1. My favourite aspect of my job is meeting new students and being able to make real change for the students while at uni, to make it such a memory that they will always remember there days at JCU with a smile.

2. For me this semester im focusing on getting the grades I need to go and study overseas next year, and working on just making uni life better for students.

Arts & Education Association

Established in 2022, JCAEDSA is an inclusive & supportive society that aims to provide students with experiences than enable them to excel. These events allow them to network, build professional relationships, share resources, connect, and, most importantly – make friends. We are incredibly proud to be the association we are today. We started with barely anything, and in the space of 12 months ran two pub crawls, multiple trivia nights, BBQs, study lock-ins & The Arts and Education Ball!

This year we are expanding our horizons. In addition to last year ’s endeavours, we are looking at adding paint-and-sip nights, pool party, athletic carnivals, and a JCAESDSA amazing race around campus. Anyone can participate in our events however, we recommend you join via either our basic membership, which is free and offers a 5% discount on all events, or our premium membership which is $45 and offers a 10% discount, a goodie bag, and a bonus shirt if joined before week 2. Alternatively, we have an extensive range of merchandise available – polos, hoodies, hats and lanyards.

Aquaculture Association

President: Max

Our club aims to bring anyone with an interest in aquaculture together through social events like pub crawls and trivia nights. The AQA mascot is a giant barra. All our club events and announcements are advertised on our Facebook page. You can also follow our insta for updates & info on our volunteering projects.

Dive Club

President: Riley Large

The JCU Dive Club is a group of ocean enthusiasts who offer some of the best Great Barrier Reef diving to the Townsville community. We are proud marine scientists, ocean explorers, and fun-loving people. We are one of the oldest clubs at JCU (over 30 years!) and consistently certify lifetime SCUBA divers. In addition to dive trips, we offer crackin’ social events and look forward to meeting new members. Sign up for the JCU Dive Club and come fall in love with the ocean and meet some lifelong friends.

Christian Students

Is there more to life than chasing your dream career? Will visiting that tropical island really fulfill your happiness?

At JCU Christian Students Townsville (JCUCS), we challenge members to consider big questions and our life purpose. We believe that our biggest purpose in life is to know God and be in a relationship with Him- the creator of the universe. Our club motto is “To proclaim Jesus on campus to present everyone mature in him”. For 53 years, JCU CS has been helping people at JCU encounter Jesus through the Bible, to understand the depth of God’s love for them.

Everyone and anyone is welcome to attend our regular events, which you can find on our Facebook page and website!

On campus, we host The Bible Talks on Wednesdays and Thursdays, where we listen and think about different themes from the Bible and share dinner afterwards. We also host Bible studies for college and International students, allowing people to read the Bible for themselves in a friendly group setting. These events provide a unique way for students to make lasting friendships with people from other degrees and year groups! Our social events include social sport on Fridays and occasionally a Uniconnect social activity to share a meal, read the Bible and play games.

Two of the larger events we hold during the year combines club members from both Cairns and Townsville campuses, where members are encouraged to learn more about God through studying the Bible over a longer time period. Kick Off Camp is held on the weekend following Week 3, Sem 1. The Camp is held near tropical Cardwell and is a great way to meet others from CS, hear about Jesus and the Bible, explore the region, encounter a few cane toads, and make new friends. Mid-Year Camp is held in the Atherton Tablelands at the end of the Semester 1 holiday. During the week at Camp, we have a guest speaker who opens the Bible with us. We have fun exploring the beautiful lakes around the region during our free time, and we leave Camp challenged by each other to live as Christians on campus. There might also be a Mark Drama, a theatre performance that retells the gospel of Mark. Look out for more info in Semester 2!

If you have questions about Christianity or want to know more about Jesus, please contact us!

Engineering Undergraduate Society

JCU EUS is the connection between students and the Industry. Because Engineering is such a connection-based industry and profession, getting students talking with companies in their goal profession is super important.

We host a range of events, from social and casual, to forging professional networks and relationships. Some of our events include pub crawls, bowl nights, trivia events, weekly BBQ’s, Industry Nights, and our infamous end-of-year ball.

General Practice Student’s Network

President: Phoebe Chong

Hey! We are GPSN, a student-run organisation with a very special interest in all things general practice. We run many exciting events around this idea, from guest speaker nights discussing GP career pathways and the training required for it, to our coveted clinical skills night which in the past have included phlebotomy and ultrasound practice. Some of these wouldn’t even be seen until 3rd or 4th year, so it’ll certainly be early for the first years who sign up!

You can visit us next at JCUMSA’s Welcome BBQ on the 24th, but you can sign up with us before then (for free!!!) via our socials on Facebook and Instagram.

Law Students Society

Law students, we want you!! The JCU Law Student society has been connecting law students to the profession, running amazing social and networking events and engaging with students since 1989. This semester, we have our pub crawl in week 4, a profession insight night in collaboration with the business student association in week 6, NS How-to linked-in event in week 7, a cocktail night in week 8, and so much more! Please check out our social media to sign up to be a member and attend our fantastic events. Membership is $10, and all members get discounts on event tickets and a free branded coffee tumbler.

Marine Society

Throughout the year we run many events such as beach clean-ups, industry and networking nights, documentary nights, and a marine ball to end the year. If you are interested in these events or becoming a member, please find us on social media, and follow us for updates or send us a message.

We are a collection of James Cook University students who share a love of marine-related things. The society’s aim is to bring like-minded people together who are passionate about our marine environment. (and no, you do not have to study marine to be a part of it). With the marine society only being 3 years old, we have grown to be one of the largest groups on campus, making it an easy and fun way to make friends. Facebook

Pharmacy Students

We have represented JCU Pharmacy Students for over 20 years and provide benefits to our students. We also participate in the charity cup and vampire cup. We have our welcome mixers in week 2 and 3, as well as our pharmacy ball on April 14th. In the past 12 months alone, we’ve successfully welcomed the Cairns and Mackay students and re-wrote our constitution to accommodate this. We also redesigned our club logo

- It’s the eye of Horus inside the Bowl of Hygeia – and are redesigning our placement uniforms! We are also introducing new merch, including ringers, shirts, shorts, and hoodies. Become a member and get cheaper tickets and purchase tickets through our website.

Robotics Club

We are the premier club at JCU for all things robotics. We have a lab room which gives the space and resources for students to work on fun projects. We have robot soccer competitions throughout the year where you battle for supremacy on the pitch. We also have, in the past, done robotic workshops for kindergarten kids, prepping for the future.

JCU robotics club is the student branch for IEEE (Internation Electrical and Electronics Engineers), which makes us an excellent resource for getting involved in the greater world of engineers post-university.

Members of Roboclub also compete in an international Robotics competition Robot X where universities from around the world automate a WAM-V 5.3m vessel to complete a variety of tasks such as navigation, search and report, payload delivery. In last year’s competition, the team won 1 judge award and an industry award for their efforts. The club and team have their sights fixed on improving their design to compete in the next competition in 2024.

Supporting All Nations Towards Equity

SANTE has been JCU’s global health club since 2007. Our events focus on climate health, sexual & reproductive health, human rights & refugee health rights, and public health advocacy – we work with external organisations i.e. Amnesty & Townsville multicultural support group, Australian Medical Students Association CAMSA. Some of our highlights include: Palm Sunday Rally (with painting with puppies for poster-making) and red week (reproductive health week), which has a mix of social events and clinical skills events. We are not medicine exclusive, we welcome anyone to come to our events!

Society of Manga, Anime and Gaming

SoMAG is an all-ages club about anime, manga, and gaming – pretty much all pop culture and nerdy passions are welcomed. We have weekly events on Wednesday to socialise, watch anime and play games. Once a month we have games nights, and we run a Cosplay Night yearly.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the club, and we are proud of what SoMAG has been able to do for the students at JCU and the greater community. We have in past years - and hope to continue to in future years - hosted the Townsville Japanese film festival, held cosplay visits for the children’s hospital, developed the eSports building at JCU, assisted children with learning disabilities, and collaborated with other JCUSA clubs.

Women in Science Society

President: Ashlee DeVore

Our Society organises networking opportunities for women in STEM and social events to create a supportive community for female scientists.

We are a new club that became official on the 9th of February 2023. A community to share experience and problems faced by women while building a support group is necessary and was missing on campus. We plan to host events and help charities that are established by women and for women. We also plan to host fun events as stress busters.

We have our first event planned for 8th March, which happens to be International Women’s Day. The events will be a form of initiation where the members will get to know each other, share their interests and ideas, and voice what they want from our Society, so we can also include events to accommodate their interests.

Zoology Society

The JCU Zoology society is for everyone who loves animals of all shapes and sizes. We have a range of events focusing on outside activities to find interesting critters, like night herping and camping. We want to educate students on the local wildlife on and around campus. The club, unfortunately, shrunk a bit during covid but is now reblossoming and welcoming many new students for the new year.

Currently, we offer fortnightly herping walks free of charge, and we will host a welcome BBQ and movie night towards the end of the semester. We encourage everyone to check out our Facebook page for all events and to engage with the Zoology community.

So come on down and nurture your inner David Attenborough.
