From the President Students of JCU, Welcome to Semester 2, 2022! For all the new students, welcome to JCU, I hope you enjoy your time here. For everyone else, welcome back to another semester here at James Cook. My name is Thomas Sherrington, I’m the Student Association President until the end of this October. First off, I thought I should outline what productive change we have brought/are set to bring about at JCU for the students this year. We are currently in the process of changing our constitution in time for this year’s election (more on that later) to create the positions of Women’s and Queer Officer. In the process the position of Equity and Diversity is being removed, due to the role of the position not being overly relevant or useful for the vast student cohort. The Equity and Diversity Committee, a committee that can optionally exist every year, will still exist with the change being that the committee encompasses the Women’s, Queer, First Nations, and other relevant diversity officers. This change allows us to have a committee in which diverse students are better represented and heard. We are also in the process of finalising a Queer Space for Queer Students, something that is incredibly vital for us to be up to speed with other universities all across the country. 2022 Student Elections are coming up later this year in October and I encourage everyone of you to put your hand up to run in the elections. The election dates are the 11th and 12th October, while nominations open likely on 12th September at 9am and close on 26th September at 4pm. You will be eligible to nominate if you are an Student Association Member (Free or Paid) by the 22nd of September at 9am. If wish to vote only, you simple have to be a Student Association Member by the 7th of October at 4pm. The Positions you could potentially nominate for are the following: - President (Head of the organisation) - Vice-President (Head of Clubs) - Townsville Campus Officer (For Townsville Based Students) - Cairns Campus Officer (For Cairns Based Students) - Women’s Officer (For Women Identifying Students) - Queer Officer (For Students who identify as Queer) - First Nations Officer (For First Nations Students) - Postgraduate Officer (For Postgraduate Students) - International Officer (For International Students) - Environment Officer (Environmentally focused position) I should also relay a few tips for students this semester, just as I did last semester as well – try to get involved in Interfacility Sport (Sport for your faculty) – this semester is Basketball and Rugby League/ Netball. Social sport is also available for a more casual experience and if you live on a residential college; get involved in Winna Shield (Townsville) or Gunyarra Cup (Cairns). They’re all great experiences. If you are a member of a club and society, make sure to get involved in their events this semester. If you’re not a member of any club, join one and get involved!

Sandwich Erika Wiltshire, Bachelor of Pharmacy

‘Sandwich’ is one of my more colourful, random and abstract pieces. The pen I used did not vary in width, and as a result, I had to rely on pen strokes rather than the width of the line to provide depth. The colours were made intentionally brighter and with a pinkish hue to give it a dream-like appearance, which accentuated the more unusual aspects of the drawing – the floating sandwich. Overall, this piece helped me break my state of art block and allowed me to experiment freely with other illustration tools. Dimension: 2860 x 3936 px Program: Clip Studio Paint Pro

On Laying Down The Body of A Loved One Mackenzie Akins, Bachelor of Arts.

This poem reflects a timeless theme of humanity: death. The poem may appear grim, but it documents the internal monologue of a person coming to terms with the death of their loved one in war and may be interpreted by anyone struggling with accepting the way things are. Poetry and art speak to universal themes, and this work explores a way of coping against tides that seem to overrun you. I am sure university students will know this feeling well.

Bright mountain, fall away, Leave a scar on the earth in your place. Bring back my beloved Slumbering now, the bedfellow of worm, Clay and dandelion root. Where once the soul beat flourishing, All left is but bone and pallid stuff Littered among gold and earthly affects, Little good they did him. The sword is now Gathering rust, each year a few more specks, The sword that should have saved him. A thousand years from now When raiders find that burial mound, Sink the hole and dive in, no skin will they find. Not the skin I touched, nor the skin I loved. Just the metal chunked and rotten, And the bones of my beloved bound amongst the clay.
