Bed Bugs on the Rise

We have seen an increase number of cases of patients presenting to clinic with suspected bed bugs. We wanted to share the IP policy regarding the Bed bug protocol and how to manage in an outpatient setting. Relevant information for our environments can be found below. If you have any questions regarding the handling of an identified patient, please reach out to your team leader and we can help troubleshoot the best approach to ensure the patient’s needs are being met and we are preventing further contamination.

Bed Bug Protocol:

Capture a bed bug and place it in a sealed container for identification. The bedbug cannot be smashed. Hand sanitizer can be added to the container to kill the bug. Leave the room intact without cleaning or removal of any items. The following individuals/groups should be immediately notified:

The department/unit supervisor

Facility engineering

Environmental services

Send email to Infection Prevention

Managing Bed Bugs in Outpatient Settings:

If a patient is suspected of having bed bugs or have past history of bed bugs, immediately place the patient in contact precaution and follow JPS notification process as above.

Medical/nursing staff should inspect the patient for additional identification of bugs as well as inspection of skin integrity due to bites.

If bugs are visible, have the patient place any personal items in a sealed bag to take home. If possible, capture the bug(s) and secure in a specimen cup for identification by JPS designated pest management professional.

Quarantine the suspected room until EVS and Pest Management Professional certify it is pest free and can be used for another patient.

Confirmation of bed bugs: The areas/room will be closed and treated according to the Pest Management Professional recommendation. EVS will clean the room and it will be cleared for occupancy.

Unconfirmed bed bugs: The area/room may be treated based on the Pest management Professional recommendation. EVS must clean the room and then it will be cleared for occupancy.

Thank you for all your hard work and diligence!

Good Start at the Start Clinic

The Start clinic, located within the Stop Six Clinic, offers individual and group therapy to give our patients the tools to cope with stressors and builds on their strengths to help in substance use recovery Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is an approach that combines medication with counseling to support ending the use of substances and addressing the behaviors that are associated with addiction MAT uses the same approach and has proven to be the most effective way of helping a person on their path to recovery. Patients can be referred by the JPS Bridge Clinic as well as by their primary care or specialty provider

In a partnership with Challange of Tarrant County, we are excited to host a presentation from John Haenes, LMSW, CPS Tarrant County Challenge, COO and Melissa McCarthy, PhD, Tarrant County Challenge, Dir of Prevention on The Current Substance Use Crisis & Naloxone Overdose Reversal The presentation will take place at CBHR on February 15th from 1:30-3:30pm

CPAN and TCHATT Expanding Hours

Exciting things are happening for our CPAN & TCHATT programs

Starting on Monday, January 16th, TCHATT began offering an extended hours therapy pilot TCHATT's previous schedule was 8 am – 5 pm, where the new hours include an additional two hours: 8 am – 7 pm There will not be a provider during the additional two hour time frame (5 – 7 pm), but there will be a CPAN or TCHATT leader available As such, the team's leadership will have varying schedule to accommodate the additional hours required during the pilot

Once the new TCHATT team lead is hired, they will take over all evening hours and we will update all teams once this happens The pilot program will last approximately 90 days, with the potential to be permanent thereafter
