The Winter Months of Tevet and Shvat The seasons of the year play a major role in the way we live our lives; summer and winter means different wardrobes, activities and foods. In our spiritual journey we also have winter and summer. Winter, when the nights grow long, hints at a time of G-dly concealment and exile. Summer, when the sunlight again surpasses the nights, represents a time of G-dly revelation and redemption. Although it is cold and cloudy now, we begin making our summer plans. So too, during these days of the exile, we are preparing through our Divine service for the future redemption. The goal now is to stay warm with plenty of Torah and Mitzvot, until very shortly the summer will arrive - and Moshiach too!

Of Shepherds and Statesmen Is isolationism the only way to live as faithful Jews, or can we scale the ghetto walls and still remain devout? This is, of course, an ongoing debate among different schools of thought in our community. Some look down on those who insist on insulating themselves Continues on a page 3
