Hello everyone, may I wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year on behalf of the Roundup team. At this point can I take the opportunity to thank everyone who gives up time to help produce such a successful magazine. Helen and Martin Rodney-Smith who deal with the finances, a very efficient team of proof-readers, Alan Smith, Mary Fish and Lisa Souter. James Murray is our ‘out and about’ official photographer who also provides the information about the events he visits. Last but not least thanks to all the other volunteers (too many to mention here individually) who tirelessly deliver all the magazines each month. Without all these kind people we wouldn’t have such a great publication. I found it quite heart-warming, as I am sure you will, when you read the lovely story about the contribution to the wild birds who visit Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club (page 25). It appears that since we included Walmer in the Rural Roundup, copies are obviously finding their way far and wide and I am getting requests from clubs and associations for their details to be included in the publication. This I would love to do, but space is at a premium, so I must give priority to the areas listed on the front cover. All the Best, speak to you next year, Doreen. Highlights of an ordinary meeting of the Ringwould w Kingsdown Parish Council on Monday 13th November 2017 at Kingsdown Village Hall – 7.00pm The meeting began with the Chair welcoming members of the public who voiced concern about the Gladman Planning Application Appeal for 85 dwellings. The Chair and Vice Chair reassured the public that the Parish Council has gone to every effort to oppose the unsustainable development at appeal. Finance and Administration: Members approved the monthly payment schedule and agreed to move the Parish Council Current Account to Lloyds Bank. A draft 2017/18 budget was presented for review. Highways and Footpaths: A report on 20mph speeding limits and HGV vehicles within the parish was considered and it was agreed to refer to Finance Committee to review. Planning: The minutes of the Planning Meeting were noted and the current Planning Log is available on the parish council website. The Parish Council were disappointed that land beyond Strathfleet, Victoria Road, had been granted planning permission on appeal. The Parish Council has contacted DDC about building infringement on Queensdown Road, outside the village confines. Environment and Amenities: A new, second Tree Warden was appointed and council wish to welcome Dr Ingrid Dodd to this voluntary role. The Parish Council approved Kent Wildlife Trust Woodland Management Plan Contract. The council continues to be concerned about dog fouling within the parish especially areas used by children; patrols have been initiated with DDC’s Environmental Enforcement team. Other Business: A member of council attended the Dover Area KALC meeting and provided a report on Dover Local Plan from DDC’s Planning Advisory Group. The Chair commented on the warm welcome PC members had received at the moving Remembrance Day services at St John’s and St Nicholas. Ros Beresford gave us a fascinating talk on Hedgehogs, taking us through the way that the structure of our gardens and countryside has changed over the years to the detriment of our spiny friends. We need to look after our hedges and create hedgehog highways through our fences and walls. Hedgehogs love a bit of mess as well as pests and slugs but sadly gardeners don’t. If we let a bit of our gardens go wild and fill up with wood stacks and the like, and if we all gardened without chemicals, we might help the remaining few hedgehogs prosper. We chose a bad date for our Autumn Social as it clashed with a number of other village events so we have postponed it until the new year. Watch out for the new date. And finally we have been supporting our Parish Council in their objection to the development of 85 houses on the Dover Road in Upper Walmer. Thank you to everyone who lodged an objection against the appeal. Have a lovely Christmas! Anne-Marie: talks@kingsdownconservation.co.uk

Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary:- Jane Jobey Tel:- 01304 381 702 It’s that time of year again when you cannot go to a garden centre without a “Ho Ho Ho” from a miniature Father Christmas, herds of reindeer, constant Christmas songs and row upon mesmerising row of glittering festive decorations, all of which have been available since late October. Having said all that, the Head Gardener and I enjoy our visits to them, if only for a cuppa and a scone. The society has had a good year; membership numbers are up and stable, the annual show was as good as ever, and the visits most enjoyable. The speakers were excellent with the best saved until last: Steve Edney. Well done, Sue. Should you have any spare time in the run-up to Christmas here are some of the things you can be getting on with in the garden: Prune climbing roses, cutting away diseased or damaged growth, tying in new shoots, cutting back older flowered side shoots by 2/3rds Prune wisteria, cutting back summer side shoots to 2/3 buds. Lift and divide established clumps of rhubarb.

Dates for your diary: Monday 29th January 2018 – AGM Monday 26th February 2018 – William Friend will be giving a talk on Mediterranean plants for the Kent coast. It only remains for me to close 2017 by wishing you all a Very Happy Christmas and, most importantly, a Healthy New Year. Bob Perry 9

Extended Opening Hours for Kingsdown Pre-School. After forty years of offering mornings of exceptional educational childcare, Kingsdown Pre-school will be increasing its opening hours. From January the Pre-school will be open Monday to Friday 9am to 3pm during term time. The Pre-school is responding to the requests of parents and carers, and to the introduction of 30 hours free childcare for working parents. The Pre-school has a very experienced staff team, some of whom have been working there over twenty years, who are looking forward to our existing children staying for longer days and to welcoming new families. Sarah (Kingsdown Pre-school Chairperson) Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas Child This autumn St John’s Church, Kingsdown, joined Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School in Operation Christmas Child, an International charity which distributes shoeboxes to needy children throughout the world who would not expect to receive any presents at Christmas, unlike most children in the developed world. Shoeboxes bring joy and excitement to children, with gifts of clothes, toys, school supplies and hygiene items. Thanks to all who took part and a happy Christmas to you all. Ian Stephen Over 300 000 children have fled in terror from the violence in Myanmar into Bangladesh. They are malnourished, exhausted and traumatised. Many children are arriving alone, as often they have seen their parents killed in front of their eyes. They are prime targets for exploitation, abuse and trafficking. Save the Children is providing protection and care to children and is helping to reunite them with their families. It is also delivering vital health, nutrition and hygiene care. Just £3 can buy life saving antibiotics for two children. The next quiz in aid of Save the Children is Thursday 30th November at the Deal Vics Cricket Club CT14 7RQ £2 per head, no booking required. Sarah Spong (Chair Deal Save the Children) The Arts Society, Dover Deal and Sandwich, meet monthly on the first Tuesday morning of the month in the Guildhall Sandwich (except July and August). Ripple Parish Council Clerk:- Mrs Karen Castle Tel:- 01304 364 406

Email: - clerk@rippleparish.co.uk - Website:-www.ripplepc.kentparishes.gov.uk Highlights from Ripple Parish Council Meeting held on Thursday 9th November 2017 Ripple Parish Council will again make their objections known against the appeal by Gladman Development on the Walmer Road. Lots of good ideas came from Councillors and members of the public regarding next year’s firework event, Councillors intend to start planning early to ensure a safe event. Councillors Keith Morrison & Robert Dougill will attend the Remembrance Service at Ripple Church on Sunday 12 th and Chairman will lay poppy wreath donated by the Parish Council. A further donation of £50 to the Royal British Legion was proposed and agreed by all councillors. A member of the public pointed out that the key pad on the defibrillator case is difficult to see in the dark. Clerk to contact the manufacturer about a back light for the key pad and if this is not possible to approach Village Hall Committee for permission to install a sensor light on the wall above the case. Next meeting is on Thursday 14th December at 7pm in the village hall. Karen Castle, Clerk to Ripple Parish Council Councillors would like to wish everyone in the Village a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

Ripple Annual Bonfire & Firework Evening This year’s event saw a phenomenal turnout, far more than expected; over a 1000 people came along. Although we were surprised at the huge number, luckily due to the extra road closure used for parking and the number of stewards the event went ahead safely and was a great success. A big thank you from the Chairman and Councillors of Ripple Parish Council to the villagers and locals who helped with the event; it couldn’t have gone ahead without you. And a big thank you to John Ledger and his family. What a fantastic bonfire and firework display! County Councillor Steve Manion had the difficult task of judging the guys. The children made a great effort and all the Guys looked fantastic. 1 st, 2nd & 3rd prizes were awarded but all the entrants were winners in our eyes. All the children received sweets from the ‘sweetie bag’.

Sutton by Dover Parish Council Clerk:- Mrs Susan Smith, Tel:- 01304 827 266 Email:- suttonbydoverpc@gmail.com www.sutton-by-doverpc.kentparish.gov.uk

Notes from the ordinary meeting of Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council on Tuesday 7th November 2017 held at the Church Hall Studdal Traffic issues: The Council have met with KCC Highways to agree the location of two new HGV signs in the villages which will hopefully reduce the number of lorries trying to use the roads through the parish. KCC Member Steve Manion has kindly contributed to the cost of the signs.

A Defibrillator for the Parish: The Councillors briefly discussed this again. Enquires have been made as to where the defibrillator could be located. One suggested site is the Community Centre. The discussion will go on the agenda again for next month. Planning: The Parish Council dealt with three applications and received notification of various decisions from DDC on planning applications in the parish. The planning log is up and running on the website for parishioners to check local applications. Speeding issues: The speeding signs have been erected in several gardens of local residents and on the verges in various locations in the three villages. Green in front of the Three Horseshoes: The Parish Council have been in contact with the Land Registry but have been unable to register possession of this piece of land. The Parish Council will now consider registering the land as a village green instead. DDC/KCC report: The annual budgets are being discussed. A KCC budget consultation message is on the parish website for information. Next ordinary meeting to be held on Tuesday 5th December in the Church Hall East Studdal at 7.30 pm The January meeting will be held on the second Tuesday of the month, 9th January 2018 in the Church Hall East Studdal at 7.30 pm.

Mrs Susan Smith, Clerk to the Council

Please Adopt a Drain to stop Flooding. In the winter months flooding can occur as drains become blocked with mud, leaves and debris and surface water is unable to run into the soakaways via these blocked drains. Unfortunately, due to Government financial cut backs KCC do not have the funds to regularly clear the drains that serve the soakaways in our Parish. Before the winter weather is upon us, the Parish Council are asking for Parishioners’ help to clear the top and area around the drain(s) closest to their property to ensure these are fully functional. Whilst carrying out this work we would ask you to be careful of road traffic, make sure you are highly visible, do not leave debris on the road and do not remove drain covers. Hopefully this is something we as a Parish can do to help ourselves and our neighbours. Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council 19

Bird Haven…… small birds living on the Walmer and Kingsdown Golf

course will have a better Christmas thanks to a combination of the Club’s voluntary bird woman Eileen Winham and Rural Roundup. Earlier this year Rural Roundup published a story about me and wild birds at the hut on the 11th tee of Walmer and Kingsdown golf club in between feeding the golfers. Birds that I see frequently are robins, yellow hammers, chaffinches, dunnocks, great tit, coal tit, blue tit and occasionally a visit by a great spotted woodpecker. One morning a few weeks after the story appeared I arrived at the clubhouse to pick up my stocks for the hut and a letter was handed to me addressed to the ‘cafe next to the 11th tee’. Inside were a card and a voucher ‘For the birds best wishes J C Clarke’. Delighted I put the card on my hut notice board and this provoked further donations from golfers which enabled me to purchase a bird bath. This bird bath has given me and fellow bird enthusiasts a lot of pleasure over the months since – seeing the birds bring their young not only to enjoy the food but also a bath and a drink during the hot weather. Access to water is just as important for small birds during the winter months according to the RSPB who tell me that birds need water all the year round for drinking and bathing. Water is particularly important during the winter when natural supplies may be frozen and in dry, hot weather during the summer when water can be hard to find. I may have a tiny problem - club members who know about birds have advised me to put a small ball in the bath to prevent it freezing in winter. Now I wonder where I am going to find one of those? On behalf of the birds I would like to thank J C Clarke who sparked off the donations and Rural Roundup who told people about them in the first place. Eileen Winham 25

Kingsdown Carol Singing We welcome everyone to join us for this lovely tradition. You don’t have to live in Kingsdown to come along, and stay for the whole evening. We will always start at the Meeting Point but may have to alter routes due to weather. There are no auditions, no rehearsals just turn up and sing. It is good fun. Dress warmly and bring a torch and we'll provide the carol sheets. This year we are starting at 6.30pm each night and finishing by 8.30pm except on Christmas Eve when we start at 7pm and keep going till we have visited all the pubs. Looking forward to seeing you Sylvia (373 651) Sue (381 567) and Dinah (373 176) Date Monday 11

Bible Presentation at Walmer School

Back row from left, Revd. Seth Cooper, Pastor Clive Lambden and Pastor Seyan Tills. Front row with their new bibles: Joe Fairclough, Hannah Maynard, Jay Barr and Jasmine Howard

Christmas came early for sixty-six children at The Downs C of E Primary School when they were presented with individual bibles to use during their school life and which they will take with them when they leave. The bibles for the sixty year three children and six more in older classes who joined the school after year three, were all paid for by parishioners at Walmer’s Churches, who donated around £1,000, and clergy from St Mary’s, the Walmer Baptist Church and The Walmer Chapel were on hand to present the books to the children. The children, who were all sitting on the floor in front of the school hall, went up to be presented with the bibles, each of which had their name inside, in a skilful drill-like operation which would have made a Royal Marine drill sergeant proud. Watching the presentation were proud parents and members of the parishes of Walmer. Pastor Seyan Tills, an old boy of the Downs, who wore a bright T-shirt with a picture of himself when he was a pupil at the school on it and Pastor Clive Lambden of Walmer Chapel presented the books. Revd. Seth Cooper of St Mary’s, St Saviour’s and Blessed Mary of Walmer, had to persuade the children to stop reading and put down their bibles before he could read to them from the Bible. 29

Two highly regarded institutions that will be protecting Walmer by land and sea over Christmas. Kent police in the form of Police Community Support Officer Tom Daley will be looking out for us on land and various types of rescue craft from the Walmer Lifeboat station at sea. Kent police have been safeguarding us for 160 years now since they were set up in in January 1857 and the Lifeboat service began in 1830. Two long standing institutions which we know well. However, PCSO Tom Daley is new and Rural Roundup thought you would find it interesting to know more about his work. Police community support officers (PCSOs) are uniformed staff whose role is to support the work of police officers and work within their local community. Their role is to assist the police in areas that need a certain level of police presence, but not necessarily the expertise of a trained police officer. They free up some of the time police officers might spend on routine tasks or low-level crime issues, and provide a valuable service to the community. They may help with issues such as: providing a visible and reassuring presence within communities; attending incidents of disorder, nuisance and anti-social behaviour; dealing with community issues such as littering and dog fouling; checking out abandoned vehicles; gathering evidence through observation; helping with missing persons enquiries; speaking to young people who might be drunk and causing problems; confiscating alcohol and tobacco, if necessary; crowd control and directing traffic at public events; helping direct traffic at road blocks or scenes of accidents; assisting police with recording names and addresses or door-to-door enquiries. PCSOs spend most of their time out on patrol, usually on foot or possibly also on a bicycle. They work in pairs or small teams, and in liaison with their police officer colleagues. In some forces they team up with police officers, managed by a police sergeant. They do not have the same powers of arrest as police officers, although they do have the right to detain suspected offenders for up to thirty minutes until a police officer arrives. They carry radios so that they can communicate with police control rooms and other colleagues. Tom Daley can be contacted through the police non emergency number 101.
