Here we are entering the tenth year of Rural Roundup. Issue number one March 2010 had 30 pages it has now grown to 48. It is thanks all who regularly send in notice of events and interesting stories that it is still going strong, and a very popular publication it is. Jean Winn very kindly keeps a mailing list of people who wish to have a copy emailed to them as soon as the copy is sent to the printer. If you wish to be added to this list let me know and I will pass your address on to her. A copy of Rural Roundup can also be found early on each of the Parish Council Websites also Ringwould St Nicholas - Cornilo Churches website. For those who like a hard copy, we aim to collect them from the printer for delivery for the first of each month. Residents of Walmer may pick a copy of Rural Roundup where they see this sticker displayed in the shops around Walmer. As we have now committed to all colour, I am taking the opportunity of rearranging the style slightly to free up a little more space for general information and events. All contacts and the ‘calendar of events’ will now be found on the last four pages. All the best, Doreen.

Kingsdown News & Events……………..continued St John’s, Kingsdown, 100 Club Since July until the end of last year we maintained the sale of all 100 numbers, which produces an annual £600 towards the upkeep and maintenance of the Church. I thank all of our subscribers for their continued support. We now have one number that is available and I look forward to the sale of this number to maintain our annual turnover. Since our inception in 2010 we have raised a total of over £8,500.00 of which a minimum of 50% is allocated to St John’s Church. We are currently endeavouring to raise sufficient funds to repair the stonework to the Bell Tower that is in need of urgent restoration. The sale of all 100 numbers means that the monthly 1st prize is £25, the 2nd £15 and the 3rd £10. The winners over the last six months of 2018 were: James Bird Mandi Blacker Derek the News David Dobby Margaret Gilling Christine Hawthorne Margaret Hoskins Caroline Knowles Sue Martin James Masson Georgina Maude (3) Ann Morris Pam Peel Barbara Ridout Ian Stephen Bob Wiseman There are 36 winners each year so the odds are very good. Should you wish to become a member please contact the Club Convenor, David Dobby, who will be pleased to sell you the remaining number or, if this has been sold, to put your name on the waiting list. Tel: 01304 373 331 or dobby16@btconnect.com.

New Convenor sought for St John’s 100 Club St John’s Church, Kingsdown, is seeking a new Convenor of its 100 Club from the 1 st April 2019. The Club was started in 2010 and since then has raised over £8,500 of which 50% has been donated to the Church for repairs to the building fabric and the remainder distributed in prizes. The Club is fully subscribed bar one and 65% pay by SO or FPI. There is a monthly draw at the end of each month and the result is published in the Church Porch. A six-monthly bulletin is also produced for publication in Rural Roundup giving an overall picture of the current position and the names of prize-winners over the previous six months. The Club is now entering its 10 th year and it is time for a change of Convenor. Will anyone interested in taking on this role, please contact David Dobby on 01304 373 331 or dobby16@btconnect.com

Thirty-five people came to learn about ‘Winter Sea Birds of East Kent’ from Ken Chapman of the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust. Reculver, Sandwich Bay, Foreness Point, Deal Pier and St Margarets Bay are all good places to spot sea birds and it was amazing quite how many there are to spot! I was rather taken with the Bonxie and Gannets. A total change of subject for our next talk on Tuesday 19th March when Hilary Newport, Director of the Kent Branch of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England will talk about how we can all be better prepared to resist inappropriate building developments in and around our beautiful village. Doors open at 7:30pm in the Kingsdown and Ringwould C of E Primary School, Kingsdown Members £3, Non-Members £6. All welcome. We hope everyone will want to join us for our Community Beach Clean on Sunday 24th March from 10:30 to 12:30. Meet near the Zetland. Litter pickers and dustbin bags will be supplied. Entries are now being accepted for the Kent Wildlife Trust ‘Wild about Gardens’ competition. Read all about the competition and find out about other ways the Trust can help you bring more wild life to your garden at https:// www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/get-involved/wild-about-gardens.

Sadly, the petition to keep M&S in Deal open fell on deaf ears and the shop will close on 27th April 2019. Let’s hope an attractive store moves in to keep our local high street blooming. Anne-Marie Martin, talks@kingsdownconservation.co.uk March is the time when serious gardeners get going. I know the weather is often terrible but March gardeners must be resilient to cope with the changes in temperature. Shrubs can be moved now, dig out as large a hole as possible around the roots and don’t worry about breaking big anchoring shoots these will regenerate if you water often to reduce stress. Roses must have their final prune, aim for a goblet shape with all crossing stems taken out and don’t be afraid to cut back according to the size of rose. You still have time before you start off annual plants so find some big jobs to keep you warm. A good run over the beds with a hoe or a spade to remove the odd weed will be very effective, if you put plenty compost on last year there should not be many this year. It will soon be time for this year’s dose! Don’t forget the next meeting of the Garden Society is on Gardening by Design on Monday 25th March. Speaker is Alison Marsden. Jaqui Stephen 9

Kingsdown News & Events………….continued Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances only three Parish Councillors were in attendance at the February Meeting and many items had to be deferred until the March meeting. However, the meeting was well attended by the public who raised various issues and ideas. Two new noticeboards have been purchased and one is in situ outside the Five Bells Public House in Ringwould and the Kingsdown notice board will be erected shortly. The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on April 8th at Kingsdown Village Hall, please see the notice boards for further information. Flooding in the Parish: The natural flood management event did not go

ahead this month. A representative from Kentish Stour Countryside Partnership is hoping to attend the March meeting to give a short presentation and discuss ways the community can help with local flooding. Planning: The Councillors considered two planning applications and discussed possible breaches of planning in the parish. The planning log is up and running on the website for parishioners to check local applications. Litter Pick: The community litter pick is set to go ahead in the parish on Saturday 13th April 2019 from 9.30 am to 13.00. Refreshments will be served at Studdal Community Centre at the end of the litter pick. Data Protection: Councillors were again advised to open a separate email account to deal with PC matters as this is best practice from a GDPR perspective. They were also advised to delete older emails. Grass cutting and grounds work: The Council discussed the grass cutting contract and appointed a new contractor to take over the grass cutting of the playing field and the various parish council maintained areas. Allotments and Orchard: The hedge cutting had been arranged to go ahead on Thursday 7th February. The adjacent land owner and the the local resident who keeps bees at the orchard had both been made aware of the date. Correspondence: The Council dealt with various correspondence, referring matters to KCC Highways where appropriate. Phone box: The old telephone box in East Studdal has been removed and the area seeded for grass. The next ordinary monthly meeting is to be held on Tuesday 5th March in the Church Hall, East Studdal at 7.30 pm

Website:- www.walmercouncil.co.uk

Highlights of the February meeting of Walmer Parish Council Walmer in Bloom: Following the success in winning a silver gilt award at the 2018 South and South East in Bloom competition the council will be entering the 2019 competition with high hopes. Members supported the committee’s proposal that the colour scheme this year for the hanging baskets which will be attached to lampposts should be pinks, purple and grey/white. Chapman Landscapes have been appointed once again to deliver and erect 56 hanging baskets for Walmer in Bloom and to water the baskets once in situ for up to 16 weeks. Amenity and Environment Committee: Members resolved that various works should be carried out in areas owned by the Parish Council to ensure the wellbeing of such areas and accepted recommendations from the council’s appointed Arboriculturist that quotes be obtained to carry out remedial work to identified trees which will be done before the nesting season begins. An in-leaf survey be carried out in the early summer to make a full assessment of the extent of Ash dieback within the woodland and the impact it may have on the adjacent highway. Winter inspections for Ash dieback can be misleading and largely inaccurate. Hawkshill Freedown Working Group: Members supported a recommendation from the group that no further memorial benches be placed on the Freedown and that local residents making such a request be offered the alternative of planting a memorial tree as part of the ongoing Walmer Street Tree replacement project. Planning Committee: Members heard that Councillor Richard Styles will attend the appropriate meeting of the Dover District Council to speak for the Council against the proposed changes to the wild life pond which is the centrepiece of the Lord Warden estate. The Planning Committee has investigated and reported on five planning applications affecting Walmer and had supported all five. On behalf of the Council the Planning Committee had submitted a report arguing strongly against proposed changes to the opening hours of Deal library. KCC Councillors report to the Council: Councillors Murphy and Bond reported that they had recruited a specialist company to give Safeguarding and Awareness presentations to teachers, staff and governors at local primary schools. They also reported that following a request from DDC Councillor Dr Eddy they had arranged for KCC to investigate improving the signage at the junctions of Salisbury Rd, Court Rd, St Richards Rd and the turning into Telegraph Rd in the interests of both vehicle and pedestrian safety. Surgeries: Members were reminded that advice surgeries for the benefit of local residents and staffed by Councillors and, other duties permitting, police officers, are held in the Council’s offices on the first Saturday of every month between 10. 30 and 12 noon. The next meeting of Walmer Parish Council will be held on 6th March at 7.00pm in the Council’s offices on The Strand. Kirsty Holroyde Clerk to the Council 23

Walmer News & Events What goes around comes around We were fascinated to see that old saying ‘what goes round comes round’ in action this month when we came across a photograph of Councillor Sue Le Chevalier, chairman of the Walmer Parish Council Walmer in Bloom committee. The photograph is of a young Sue being presented with her winners’ certificate for designing the winning poster in her then local Newton Abbott in Bloom competition. To show you Sue today we are also printing the photograph of last year’s winner of the Walmer in Bloom poster competition, Emma Cotton, whose grandmother ran the Kingsdown Village Post Office for many years, receiving her prize from Sue. Perhaps at some time in the future we will see Emma giving the prize to another little girl........Meanwhile here’s one origin of the expression as a definition of Karma to help all of us on our way. Karma:`

What goes around comes around Keep your circle positive Say good words Think good thoughts Do good deeds

Walmer News & Events……….continued Marke Wood Recreation Ground in Walmer which is much loved by residents, dog walkers and parents with children is in need of some tender loving care.. Now Walmer Parish Council, working in partnership with Dover District Council are launching an informal consultation to discover whether local people would like to help set up and join a ‘Friends of Marke Wood Group’ and help look after this invaluable and lovely asset. DDC’s Head of Operational Services, Roger Wragg, told a meeting of the Parish Council that there would be several benefits which the new group would be able to provide including: . Being able to access DDC for support with any problems with the area such as vandalism. . Being eligible as a Marke Wood group to apply for funding to improve facilities for local people including funding that is not available to the council. . Help bring the Rose Garden back to its former glory. This could mean that, for example, that there could be more and better lighting, or perhaps the rose garden which is so spectacular in the summer could be rejuvenated with more planting. Also innovative ways of managing bad behaviour of all kinds could be something that the new Friends group could look at with DDC. In short, any ideas to make this park even more special than it already is would be channelled through and evaluated by this group. An example of the kind of issue the group might deal with would be the recent removal by DDC of the original York stone from around the Memorial and users and residents have already requested that this is restored as soon as possible. This is the type of problem having a Friends group might avoid as the proposal could have gone to the Friends for approval before any work commenced and taxpayers money was spent. Walmer Councillor Mrs Marguerite Beard -Gould told Rural Roundup: “In 1927 Agnes Marke Wood of Walmer Place gave money to enable the land to be purchased for the benefit of the Community. Mrs Marke Wood died before the purchase could be completed and her daughter the Contessa di Sant’ Elia commissioned a memorial to be placed within the Park in memory of her mother. If you would like to be involved please contact the Walmer Parish Office Telephone: 01304 362 363.

Walmer News & Events……….continued Walmer in Bloom Preliminary judging for the Walmer in Bloom local competitions in 2019 will take place in the week commencing July 8th with the final judging in the week beginning July 15th so if you are planning to enter these are the dates to plan for. This follows the best ever year in 2018 when Walmer residents once again demonstrated to Walmer in Bloom judges, that they have an unwavering commitment to improving the Parish’s natural environment. The head judge, Mrs Janine Doulton of the Royal Horticultural Society, helpfully reminded Rural Roundup of some of the winning features: “The winners in each section were successful because their gardens and containers were well presented with blooms looking fresh and colourful. Lawns were well tended, healthy looking and had neat and tidy edges. The successful gardens had a good range of shrubs and herbaceous perennials as well as relying on annuals. The small space gardens showed amazing ingenuity in the amount of plants that could be grown in a confined area. Overall the gardens and containers demonstrated what a lot of work, patience and skill had been put into them to achieve such good results and I am sure that all the gardens give great pleasure to all the passers-by within the Walmer Parish.” The winners are chosen from Walmer’s three different geographical areas: Lower, Middle and Upper Walmer and last year over 300 Commended certificates were awarded following preliminary judging and a shortlist of the very best gardens went through to the final round to be considered for the Deal and Walmer Society Trophy (Winning garden) and trophies for the Overall winning Container and Overall Best Use of Small Space. As last year, runners up in the finals will be awarded either a Highly Commended Certificate, or a Certificate of Excellence. 29

General Information Pension cold-calling ban takes effect

A government ban on nuisance calls about pensions has now come into force to help protect people from being conned out of their pensions by fraudsters who have used cold-calling when trying to steal life savings or persuade people to invest in high-risk schemes. Some 10.9 million unsolicited pension calls and messages are made a year, according to Citizens Advice and restrictions on unsolicited texts and emails about pensions have already been put in place Now any company ignoring the ban faces a fine of up to £500,000, but many believe that thieves will simply ignore the rules so pensioners should still be on their guard and ignore any calls from people claiming to be experts who can help improve their finances using their pensions. How do the scams work? Research by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), found that pension scam victims lose an average of £91,000 - scams which all began with a seemingly helpful but uninvited and unexpected telephone call, text, social media approach or email - offering a way to make attractive returns on pension savings or a free pension review. Among the most common have been offers of massive returns or high-rolling investments in hotels or green energy schemes that never materialise or lead to losses or your pension funds may be simply stolen or transferred into some other high-risk scheme completely inappropriate for protecting the security of retirement savings. So please watch out – there are thieves about and they want your pensions. What you should do if you are contacted If it’s a phone call tell them to go away. If it’s a text message or email just delete them. If you do want to explore ways to improve your pension funds then find a company registered with the Financial Conduct Authority and check with the FCA to be sure. The chief executive of the Pensions Regulator, Lesley Titcomb, commented: "This ban on cold calling sends a very clear message - if anyone calls you about your pension, it's likely to be an attempt to steal your savings. Just hang up the telephone.

Letters I believe you put a note in the Rural Roundup when I lost my donkey called Violetta of 37 years. On Saturday 2nd February 2019 Fiona, who was daughter of Violetta, came to the end of her life. She was also 37 years old. It was all very sudden as she had not been ill. Just thought the people in the village may like to know. Sylvia Main

Deal Savoyards was formed in 2010, with members currently drawn from across a wide local area. Each Spring they perform a fully staged Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, with a professional orchestra, at the Astor Theatre in Deal. This year they will performing The Yeoman of The Guard. If you have not experienced Gilbert and Sullivan before, ‘Yeomen’ is a good one to start with. Visually stunning, with glorious music, set in the Tower of London during the reign of King Henry VIII, the fast-paced drama tells the story of Colonel Fairfax, a brave man condemned to death on a trumped up charge, the women who love him and the men who hate him. Comedy is provided in the person of Wilfred Shadbolt, the bungling jailer, while tragedy finally strikes as Jack Point, a sadly mediocre jester, proves unlucky in love. There is a strong local line up of Principals but the show’s great strength lies in the chorus of Yeomen Warders and colourful Tudor citizens, who have rehearsed every Tuesday evening since October for a fun, sociable time and the feel good factor that singing always brings. Penny Dorritt Good morning Doreen, We haven’t done this before, as we are relatively newcomers to the village, so I am hoping this is the right way to do things. We wondered if you could add something to the next RR to make people aware that there is a con man in the area. He drives a large white plain van, is dressed in overalls and carries a tool box and some sort of hand-held gadget. He calls and says he is from Homeserve and that a leak has been reported, he is there to have a look. Homeserve is a well known company and is a reputable company but have no knowledge of this person. Also, their vans are not plain they have Homeserve written on them. This man is bogus. When advised that he wasn’t called for or booked, he taps something on the “gadget” and says, sorry they have made a mistake and given me the wrong address. Doing this makes it look as though he is official as he appears to have the right tools for the job. We are also fairly sure that if he should be asked for identification that he would produce something. Unfortunately, we can’t offer a registration number, but we do want people to be aware. If they haven’t booked a call or they aren’t sure what to do, just close the door. If they can get the van number that would be helpful, but first.... be safe. If this does happen, please notify the police. This time of year, with the frosts etc., it would be easy to be taken in and think that someone else had reported it for them. I don’t know how this could be worded but if a line or two could be added to the RR then hopefully this man will not be successful. Sincerely, Lorna & Len Russell NIGHT on Friday 12th April
