April is a difficult month for gardeners with uncertain weather conditions. However, we can all get the mower out; for some this is a chore but for others a deeply satisfying job, a newly mown lawn with edges neatly trimmed sets off the rest of the garden. Make sure the lawn is level by pulling weeds and criss-crossing coarse grasses with an old knife before removing the tufts. Apply a lawn feed with a lawn spreader, strictly adhering to the instructions, plants only take up a certain amount and any excess will run off and pollute streams. The best way to get rid of moss is to rake out the thatch and if necessary spike the lawn. Now is the latest time for sowing new lawns. On light soils dig the ground, level off by treading and rake to a fine tilth. Calculate how much seed you need, buying too much is a waste and will hang about in your garden. The seed will germinate quickly at this time of year to produce a fine swathe. Next meeting will be on Monday 29th April when Russell Bowes will talk about ‘The Tale of the Tulip’ 7.45 pm at Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP School Coming up: ‘Sweet Pea and Rose Show’ Monday 24th June 2019. Kingsdown News & Events Kingsdown Pre-school would like to announce the return of the ever popular annual Easter Egg Trail! Come rain or shine, it will be held on the afternoon of Saturday 20th April between 1pm and 3pm starting at Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary School. Follow the clues around the woods to win an Easter Egg. All the usual fun – separate trails for younger and older children, face painting, Easter crafts, raffle, cake and refreshments. Many thanks to the National Trust for allowing us to use the woods again this year. Many of you will have seen the planning application for our proposed new building at the primary school. The new building will provide a fantastic purpose built facility in which our children can begin their education, support parents with longer hours of childcare, and support the ongoing vitality of the village. We are very grateful to Cllr Steven Manion for funding the traffic assessment. The building is subject to planning permission and our ability to raise the necessary funds, so our fundraising this year is as important as ever. Gin, Jive, Ale & Wail, our fabulous 40s and 50s night, returns on Saturday 8th June, and we are now part of the Dover District Lotto which raises money for local good causes. The top prize is £25,000, and you can support us by buying tickets through www.doverlotto.com/support/kingsdown-pre-school We are always very grateful for all the support we receive. If you have time to spare and would like to volunteer regularly or at an event, please contact us at kingsdownpreschool@gmail.com .You can also get more information from our website www.kingsdownpreschool.org.uk or our Facebook page.

Kingsdown News & Events……………..continued Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School.

I start this month’s article with fabulous news – that the school has finally received planning permission for the new build to replace the Year 4 mobile. This is a project that we have been working towards for the last ten years. The mobile has become unsuitable to educate children in due to deterioration over recent years. The project is currently out at ‘tender’ and we hope building works will commence after Easter. We have already started to make plans to minimise any disruption this may cause you as villagers, particularly in terms of staff parking, as the staff car park is likely to become the builders compound. Staff will be actively encouraged to car share and park further afield and walk in. Parents were also informed recently of the Governors’ decision to join the Deal Multi Academy Trust by the following letter sent by Lee Reading, our Chair of Governors. Dear Parents/Carers, Academy Update As many of you are aware, through our Consultation with you in May 2018, over the past few years we have been exploring the various options available to our school, looking towards the future as the education landscape changes. As a Governing Body we have been able to consider several models, including the option to remain in our current status as a Local Authority funded school. We are now in a position to announce that, having considered all of the options available to us, we have agreed to convert Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP School to an Academy. We will become a member of a new and innovative Multi Academy Trust ( MAT ), which will be known as the Deal Education Alliance for Learning Trust ( DEALT ), along with six other Deal primary schools. Throughout this decision making process, we have given priority at all times to our continuing commitment to maintain the highest standards of education for every child, in an enriching and inclusive learning environment. Although we will become a member of DEALT, the day to day running of the school will remain the same. Each school will continue to operate with their own staff, individual Governing Bodies and budgets. This is an exciting new era for our school, and the Governors and Staff look forward to your continued support as we move forward to ensure that every child continues to be part of a progressive and outstanding school. Finally I would like to share with you the sad news that Mr Trufitt is retiring at the end of this academic year. Mr Trufitt has been a valued member of our staff team for the last 27 years and we will miss him greatly - but we wish him well in the next chapter of his life. Jo Hygate NIGHT on Friday 12th April

Grand Opening of Kingsdown Play Park The clouds parted and the sun shone as Kingsdown families came out in force on Sunday to celebrate the opening of the village’s new play park. The opening marks the completion of four years of fundraising by the Friends of Kingsdown Play Park for the new equipment. Children that attend the village primary school and local Brownies, Beavers and Cubs helped to choose the equipment for the park, including climbing frames, a see-saw, an adventure trail and a zip-wire!

The installation was completed last week with a set of outdoor gym equipment and an appreciation board listing all of the donors to the project. Having originally started the fundraising for the park, Amanda Sumner of the King’s Head in Kingsdown, was delighted to cut the ribbon and declare the park open. The event was attended by representatives from some of the organisations involved in the fundraising events and grants, including Cllr Doreen Clark from Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council, Cllr Sue Chandler from Dover District Council, Jo Hygate and Rose Cope from Kingsdown & Ringwould Primary School, the local scout group; and the family of Luisa Johnston, who donated the zip wire in her memory. “It’s wonderful to see the new play park open and being used by so many children. We hope that it will be enjoyed by local families for years to come,” said Lisa Dennison, Chairperson of Friends of Kingsdown Play Park. “We’ve had fantastic support from the local community and appreciate everyone’s contribution, large or small, over the past few years. It’s taken longer than we’d hoped, but we’re absolutely delighted with the end result!” Everyone toasted the opening with tea, coffee, home-made cakes and a glass of bubbly; the centrepiece was a three-tier cake of the park made by Deal baker, Katie Davis. Solleys donated 100 tubs of ice-cream; the children also enjoyed sweets supplied by ‘The Lollipop Ladies’ and teas and coffees were served up by The Moveable Feast Café. Asda and Morrison’s also donated refreshments. The Friends of Kingsdown Play Park charity will now close next month as the park equipment is handed over to the Parish Council. Lisa Dennison

Kingsdown News & Events………….continued Katie Amaouche, Parish Clerk, Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council 30A Mill Hill, Deal, CT14 9EW. Email: parishclerkrwk@gmail.com

At the monthly meeting of Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council many issues were discussed. Owing to personal reasons, Phil Zammit had found it necessary to tender his resignation from the Council and the chair recorded thanks to him for the work he had done and wished him well. The Kingsdown notice board situation is in hand and the Council are working hard to get the board erected outside the Newsagents in Upper Street. Cllr Wilson had cleaned the bus shelter outside Kingsdown & Ringwould Primary school and the chair expressed her thanks. We are looking for a self-employed handy-man. Who would be willing to do the many various little jobs which frequently crop up in and around Kingsdown & Ringwould, such as cleaning and painting the bus shelters. If this is a position you feel you would be suited to you please contact the Clerk on the above details such as insurance and methods of payment etc. Councillors approved the Terms of Reference for the Human Resources Committee who will meet again in due course. Members unanimously agreed to carry out a speed survey in Ringwould, this was proposed by Cllr Wilson, the Council will liaise with Kent County Council regarding this. Cllr Siddans is still after volunteers to support the Parish Speed watch Scheme, please contact the Clerk if you can assist. The bin storage area by the flats in Queen’s Rise is looking incredibly untidy with bin bags and rubbish over the floor and over spilling onto the path and football field. Can residents please ensure they use and respect the area and help to keep it tidy. The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Monday the 8th April 2019 at 6.30pm at Kingsdown Village Hall, come along and have a glass of wine and meet your Parish Councillors! Cllr Murray reported that a message had been received in the office from DDC stating that a section 125 order has been served on the extremely untidy property at Admiralty Mews as brought to the attention of the Council by a member of the public some months ago. Cllr Murray reminded members to subscribe to the new email system if they had not already done so and to unsubscribe their old personal address to the Council’s web-site. This would prevent them from continuing to receive duplicate notifications to their personal addresses. Cllr Murray also reminded councillors of the process leading up to the election in which the Parish office and Parish Council staff play no part. He reiterated that it is each individual’s responsibility to collect a nomination pack from DDC if they wished to stand for election and to arrange an appointment to return it prior to 3rd April . Matters arising from the minutes not covered elsewhere on the agenda Members authorised the clerk to appoint Leaf Tree Services to carry out urgent tree works around the Parish identified by the Council’s independent arboriculturist at a cost of £1,245.00. Police and Public involvement: Members discussed the success of the monthly councillor and police advice surgeries held on the first Saturday of every month in the Parish Offices and resolved that the next surgery will take place at 10.30am on Saturday 6th April; Cllrs Thompson and Miss Herring will attend. Planning: Members heard that following a private application by Cllr Mrs Beard-Gould, Historic England are considering listing the site and as such the application to develop the Palmerston Pond, on the Lord Warden housing estate has been withdrawn. Finance and General Purposes Committee: The clerk reported that it was not necessary to issue a licence to the Sports Spectacular committee for this event because there was provision in the lease for the Council to grant the ground to community organisations several times each year free of charge. The Sports Spectacular will be held at the Drill Field sports ground on 22nd June and will provide a showcase for up to 20 local sports clubs. The Clerk will write to the Rugby Club to formalise this arrangement. Members decided that, having received no amended invoice from Dover District Council, the Parish Council will pay a final payment of £34,843.13 towards the running of the public conveniences in the Parish for 2018/19. The Clerk will also sign and return the Service Level Agreement agreeing to pay £34,843.13 to DDC towards the running of the public conveniences in the Parish for 2018/19. The next meeting is Wednesday 3rd April 2019 at 7 pm at the Parish Office, 8, The Strand, Walmer. Kirsty Holroyde Clerk to the Council 23

Walmer News & Events Visit to Walmer A Historic World War One DH9 bomber has been restored to it’s former glory and on its way to Walmer. Plans are being finalised by Walmer Parish Council to mark 100 years since RAF Walmer closed after the First World War with a visit from the only DH9 WW1 Bomber aircraft, that is still flying today. DH9 planes first arrived Historic World-War-One DH9 Bomber at Walmer in January 1919 to join the Defence Flight on base. By early spring 1919 the numbers of planes increased again with the arrival of all the planes from Guston Aerodrome. Plans, though were underway to close the Aerodrome and during May and June all aircraft and personnel left, the last plane flying out being the DH9. Until the first strategic bomber - the Airco DH9 (de Havilland) took to the air, pilots would drop their bombs over the side by hand. It was dangerous and inaccurate but the introduction of the DH9 to the Western Front in World War One meant larger bombs could be dropped more accurately far behind enemy lines. After service in World War One the British government gifted the aeroplanes to Commonwealth countries as a thank you for their participation in the war. The DH9 formed the first planes in India's new air force and after its retirement it was taken to a maharajah's summer palace and stored in an elephants’ stable. The engines were taken out and the aircraft were put into an elephant stable. The engines were then used to help pump water around the estate and the aircraft themselves were left in the elephants' stable which was fortunately very dry, and among the biggest problem for the skilled restorers who spent 60,000 hours working on this plane, was that termites had attacked the wood. 1917 marked a really important period for the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Naval Air Service and aviation in general because of the ongoing arms race between the development of German aircraft and British aircraft and air comba is rapidly developing. There are fighters in the sky able to knock out other aircraft, we have reconnaissance aircraft and, of course, we have this new generation of bombing aircraft, not simply being designed to support the battlefield ground operations but to take the war to the enemy. Fascinating to think that today’s bombers with their awesome power began with this rickety looking DH9, an aircraft whose mahogany wing struts look more like fine furniture than the bracing joints of a military bomber. Subject to a safety inspection of the ground the DH9 is expected in Walmer in August. James Murray 25

Walmer News & Events……….continued Walmer Sports Spectacular

Members of the organising committee for the Walmer Sports Spectacular braved the winds and rain to hold an on-site inspection at the Walmer Parish Council owned Sports ground, the former Royal Marines Drill Field in Canada Road. First step is a ‘come and try for yourself’ sports day which will be held at the Drill Field on June 22nd 2019 at which every local sport will be invited and Walmer Parish Council is supporting this new initiative which has the aim of transforming sporting life in the area. The organising committee has three main ambitions for this project: To let local people know just what a wonderful variety of sport there is available in Walmer and the surrounding areas. To encourage people to join a sport of their choice which will provide them with an interest and help them to keep fit and healthy To help our local sports clubs to flourish by introducing them to potential new members who might otherwise never get to see what they have to offer. On the open day the plan is that residents will be able to try out for themselves around twenty different sports ranging from sailing to bowls and trampolining to tennis. There will also be possibilities for disabled people who would like to take up different sports. Among the sports clubs being invited to the event (for people of all ages and genders) are: Bowls, Cricket, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis, Trampoline, Triathlon and Tug-of-War.

A windswept quarter, Councillor David Thompson, Angela Stone, Sue McCarthy and Frances Campbell braving the elements to bring sport to all. 27

Walmer News & Events……….continued Rural Roundup Lifeboat Appeal What’s the connection between the mini jam pots supplied by hotels with your breakfast and saving lives at sea? Well, instead of simply sending the little pots off for recycling a lady called Betty Frith, Honorary Secretary of the Hertford Branch of the RNLI, has come up with a clever idea to use them to help raise funds. For most of us small denomination coins are simply inconvenient little objects that we save up until we can take them to a coin counting machine at a supermarket and either give them to charity or have them converted into pound notes. Now Betty’s scheme provides us with a way to help save lives and get rid of those inconvenient little 5p coins at the same time. You simply collect a mini jam jar from the Walmer Lifeboat station or one of the local cafes and bars which are helping to distribute the pots, and fill it with 5p’s. They include The Goose on the Green, The Bell in Sandwich, The Coastguard in St Margaret’s Bay, The Deal Pier Kitchen, Peckish, Hog and Bean, Prince’s Golf Club, The Bar, The Royal Hotel and The Mercury office in Queen Street who have agreed to act as a central collection points for the pots. Why do the RNLI need your cash? Well, the past year has been a busy and eventful year for our local Lifeboat station at Walmer. There were forty-two lifeboat launches during which thirty-five people in trouble were helped and volunteers carried out a range of operations, sometimes in conjunction with Dover lifeboat and the Coastguard helicopter, including responding to distress calls, carrying out sometimes long and tiring searches and assisting broken down vessels, often in difficult weather conditions. Hard, difficult work for volunteers who, to help them ensure that they are all on top of their game, also attend twice weekly training exercises. One hundred and sixteen of them afloat for training assessments and crew ‘pass outs’ were undertaken and ‘Dry side’ exercises including casualty care, chart and navigation work and major incident simulation. Lifeboat Operations Manager Denis Brophy who has been involved with Walmer Lifeboat for fifty years said: “This is the largest number of operations I can ever remember. It’s testament to the dedication of all our volunteers who willingly respond to their pagers whenever they go off.” So start putting your 5p’s into Betty’s little jam jars and if you want to do more, then the Walmer service is looking for enthusiastic volunteers who would like to join our shore crew. If you are interested, please phone the lifeboat station on 01304 374 475 and ask to speak to the Lifeboat Operations Manager or email walmer@mli.org.uk. And remember, the more carefully you pack the coins into the jar the more you can collect! James Murray

High energy bills a pain in the neck?

Why not find out if you could get a better energy tariff? Energy Deal, Dover District Council’s Collective Energy Switching Scheme is free to join and gives residents the chance to make an informed decision about switching energy suppliers in a safe, and supported environment without any obligation to switch. Auctions are held 3 times a year (February, May and October). The next auction will be on 21 May 2019 with registration opening on 2 April 2019. How can I take part? Online at www.dover.gov.uk/Environment/Energy-Advice/Cut-Energy-Bills Residents without internet access can call 01304 872428 (you will receive a callback) Registration only takes a few minutes and is completely obligation free. You will receive your personal offer. You decide if you want to accept your offer and switch If you’ve previously taken part in the scheme you’ll need to re-register each time you wish to take part. How does the collective switch work? Energy suppliers are invited to take part in the auction to bid against each other to offer the best deal. The Spring auction takes place on 21 May 2019 The winning supplier will be the one making the lowest offer Your personal energy offer is based on the energy usage information you provided. You are not obliged to take up the offer: it is your choice If you decide to accept the offer you need to do so before 2 July 2019 The entire switch is taken care of for you, meaning the whole thing is as smooth and hassle-free for you as possible The recent Winter Auction (held in February) secured tariffs not available direct from the supplier or through price comparison services. Both online (Octopus Energy (100% renewable energy)) and paper billing tariffs (E.ON) were between £270 and £282 lower than the standard tariff cap (based on Ofgem average consumption figures).

Police to Recruit 180 more Officers The Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Scott, has announced that extra Investment will see another 180 more Police Officers recruited to Kent Police in 2019/20. The officers will be focussed on visible patrols, community policing and investigations. This new increase is on top of the 270 extra Police Officers that Kent Police has recruited since 2016 and in addition there will be continued investment in Police Staff and PCSOs. Mr Scott has agreed with the Chief Constable that all 300 PCSO posts will remain in the county, and they will now have more powers. A new initiative for Kent, Police Cadets, a scheme for 13-17 year olds that sees positive engagement with policing and the local community is growing. The eventual aim is to have units across the whole county, and in recent months units have either opened, or will imminently open, in Swanley, Sittingbourne and Ashford, on top of those in Medway, Maidstone, Dover, Canterbury, Tonbridge and Gravesham with close to 400 Cadets already recruited. It is thanks to support from council taxpayers in Kent – this year £2 extra a month for the average band D property - that these initiatives can be funded and the number of Police Officer numbers in Kent returned to one of their highest levels on record. The Chief Constable, who decides where they are deployed, will be using the new recruits to offer more patrols in our town centres, increase the number of proactive community Policing team Officers, investigations. We look forward to seeing them out and about! You can find out more at www.kent-pcc.gov.uk/450.

An unusual busker for Walmer!

People walking along Station Road in Walmer recently were surprised to be serenaded with a variety of hymns by the melodic voice of Soony Lambden, a member of the Walmer Chapel, who, not content to wait for visitors at the Saturday morning free tea and coffee get together, had decided to share her beliefs, and her vocal talents, with passers-by. After a difficult start in life Soony, originally from South Korea, is now happily married to an Englishman and is hoping to offer some certainty to local people in these times of complete uncertainty.
