Hello everyone, I can’t believe that it is just over a year since we included Walmer in the publication. As you know circulation to homes in the Walmer area is limited. In fact, it would be impossible to deliver to every house each month, so please tell your friends to pick up their free copy from any of the shops that display a sticker in the window. I do hope you are all enjoying reading about the extra interesting information and events in our local area. Rural Roundup can also be viewed on the Walmer Parish Council website www.walmercouncil.co.uk. Also at http://www.cornilochurches.org.uk/ruralroundup.htm

I haven't heard from anyone who has grown a tall Sunflower this year. If you, or someone you know, has grown one and has evidence, please let me know. There is a small prize awaiting. Kent has 350 miles of coastline. Do you walk on the beach regularly? Are you interested in helping preserve wildlife? If you answered ‘yes’ to both these questions you might want to consider becoming a ‘coastal guardian’. Guardians of the Deep is a partnership project between Kent Wildlife Trust, Thanet District Council, Medway Swale Estuary Partnership and Kent County Council, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They are looking for individuals or groups of individuals that could devote a minimum of two hours per month to explore their coastline and report anything unusual. You do not need to know anything, you just need to be observant and enthusiastic. Training (just two hours) will be given. It is not an onerous task and you do not have to do the two hours in one go – twelve ten minute strolls would be fine, or four people doing three ten minute strolls. If you are interested, contact : Zoe.Stevenson@kentwildlife.org.uk 07803 625 615 or me. Hedgehogs featured strongly in the Green Ideas competition entries and so our October talk will be all about these spiny beasts who do all gardeners a favour by eating slugs and snails. They are a species that is in serious decline and Ros Beresford will tell us all about them and, most importantly, what we can do to help them prosper. Her talk will be on 17th October at the school. And don’t forget to put 18th November in your diaries for our Autumn social. Anne-Marie talks@kingsdownconservation.co.uk

Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary:- Jane Jobey Tel:- 01304 381 702 I hope you all had a very enjoyable summer, although I must say August went out with a reminder of what the summer should have been like. We experienced four glorious Bank Holiday days at the end of the month – just amazing. How I recall the wet and windy Bank Holidays when I was in full time employment – but this year those four days probably provided the best beach days of the year The sea was warm and very calm, just ideal for swimming and relaxing on the beach with friends. However, autumn is here and with it comes those jobs that need to be done in the garden to keep it in good shape and in particular the lawn: • Aerate the soil by using an aerator or spiking with a fork. • Over seed areas that require it • Scarify in early October to remove the build-up of dead moss and grass • Keep lawn clear of fallen leaves • Apply an autumn/winter fertiliser; this will help your lawn stay strong and healthy during winter.

Dates for your diary: Monday 30th October – Steve Edney, Salutations Head Gardener will talk about succession planting for a flower garden. The talk will begin at 7.45 pm at Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School Hall. Monday 27th November - Christmas Social. Monday 29th January 2018 AGM. Stay healthy! Bob Perry 9

St Nicholas Players

We are at last able to stage the play “Murder by the Book” by Duncan Greenwood and Robert King, which we unfortunately had to postpone at the end of April.

Murder, mayhem and madcap machinations in this fast paced comedy thriller about a suave novelist who has only one cloud in the silver lining of his life, his wife, and being a creator of thriller plots, there is only one way to get rid of her but unfortunately she refuses to play along. The dates for the show will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th November 2017 at Ringwould Village Hall. Curtain-up at 7.30pm. Tickets £5.00 available from the Box Office Tel: 01304 852 560

A new Garden of Remembrance The arrival of two new benches in Ringwould Churchyard heralds the opening of a new Garden of Remembrance. The Garden will augment the previously designated area which is now approaching its full capacity. Within the Garden there will be one central memorial stone dedicated to all individuals buried in the Garden. This central memorial will take the place of individual memorial tablets laid on to the ground as at present. The precise location of individual resting places within the garden will be recorded in a plan beside a special Book of Remembrance kept safely within the church. The Book, which is divided into months, will contain messages and sometimes emblems chosen by loved ones and written up in colour by an expert calligrapher. It is hoped that the new Garden will help to maintain the churchyard in good shape and reduce the incidence of memorials lost to weather or overgrowth. The benches should provide opportunities for rest and reflection. Charges for entries into the Book are those charged by the calligrapher. Requests for individual entries, and any further information or help, is available from either 01304 366 954 or 01304 361 030.

Extracts from 7th Sept Parish Council Meeting; •

Residents in Mongeham Road were pleased to report that the trees overhanging the road have now been cut back by UK power networks. • Ripple Annual Bonfire & Firework Event is scheduled to hopefully go ahead on Sunday 5th November pending authorisation from events management at DDC - if any one is free to help steward the evening we would be very grateful. • Residents and councillors were pleased that the proposed Dover Road housing development was turned down by DDC • Although it has been rumoured that Deal Police Station was closing, this was confirmed not to be true. Other News Ripple welcomes new PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) Jacquie Brook. You can contact Jacquie via email: Jacquie.brook@kent.pnn.police.uk. The planning log is up and running on the website for parishioners to check local applications. Speeding and Traffic issues Traffic survey. Cllr Smith gave an interim report on the speeding data shown up in the parish traffic survey. In summary, most speeding was between 30 and 35 mph with a couple of exceptions. Once the data has been recorded in graph/ chart form, this will be available to view on the website. KCC Member Steve Manion was thanked for his KCC Member's grant funding of £375 which went towards the cost of the traffic survey. Speeding issues. The Council further discussed erecting signs similar to the ones in Great Mongeham parish. Minutes of the Meeting of Walmer Parish Council Meeting held on Wednesday, 13th September 2017 at 8 The Strand, Walmer at 7.00 pm Questions and/or observations from the electorate of Walmer Asher Birt, the newly appointed KCC Volunteer Support Warden for Walmer outlined his duties which include supporting the community warden and being a visible presence around the parish, signposting and liaising between residents and local services. Councillors accepted a proposal from Cllr Trevor Bond, KCC Member for Deal and Walmer to take the KCC area engineer on a walk about in Walmer to demonstrate the effect that new housing is having on the infrastructure. The Clerk reported that Cllr Murphy had told her he is doing the same with the Highways Engineer. Cllrs Bond and Murphy will co-ordinate the visits to maximise time efficiency. Cllr Grant raised the on-going issue of traffic problems at Herschell Road East. The main complainant has raised some issues which deserve further consideration. Cllr Bond will ensure that this site is visited with the engineers. Police and crime reports PCSO report: The Clerk reported that PCSO Kerry Skirrow has been moved to Sandwich and PCSO Tom Daley will be taking over Walmer duties. Members resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to PCSO Skirrow for her service to Walmer and that a letter be sent to PCSO Skirrow’s line manager commending her excellent work.

100TH Anniversary of the opening of Walmer aerodrome Cllr Grant reported that lots of kind messages and plaudits had been received in the office and it had been felt that the event had been an unqualified success. Emails had been sent out immediately afterwards to all those who had helped in organising it and formal letters with programmes and photos will follow. A DVD is complete and will be available for viewing at the next and final meeting of the committee, the date of which has yet to be fixed. Events working group Members agreed to support a community sports day proposed by Cllr Thompson who has experience of running such an event and would like to stage it at the Drill Field in Canada Road on Bank Holiday Monday 28th May 2018. Report of the Clerk Councillors received two requests for improvements at upper Dover Road from residents and resolved that these matters be forwarded to Kent Highways and also to Cllr Derek Murphy who will be meeting with a highways engineer shortly. Councillors decided that the Parish Office will not offer signing and validation of Proof of Life forms to residents. Kent Association of Local Councils Members received information regarding the Council’s application for the Foundation Level under the Local Council award Scheme and learned that there is only one more step to complete to qualify for the award. Date of next Meeting: - Wednesday 4th October 2017 at 7pm at the Parish Office.

Please contact Alan Smith on 361 452 (Kingsdown) Dear Editor, Community Spirit We haven't been in the village that long - by comparison! Our neighbour has lived next door for about 30 years now I'm guessing - but that didn't stop her welcoming us with open arms, as did the rest of our little row on the Rise, or Sylvia over the way. It soon dawned on us that people in our village are largely, very nice. Recently our little cat Milo went missing. Neighbours we had never met very kindly offered to keep a watchful eye out and to check their sheds. After several hours he was located. Up a large tree on St Monicas. Thanks to Melanie and Rebecca for the calming distraction of conversation, the new illuminating light bulbs at the gates and the use of the torch and to Steve Adams, for his mercy dash for his cherry picker at 9.30 at night. Community spirit thrives in Kingsdown and we feel so very privileged to be here. Karen and Suze (and Milo) Southern Water Many villagers will have been inconvenienced by the Southern Water trucks on The Rise back in March of this year when a burst drain resulted in a bad spill affecting several properties. Southern Water have, after much negotiation, agreed to run an annual camera inspection of the drain which runs from the top of The Rise, down to connect on Upper Street, in order to determine the appropriate works to be undertaken. Previously they had simply jetted the drain which proved insufficient to keep it clear. This will happen in February/ March. Please can people be mindful not to put anything other than toilet paper down the drains as this is all these narrow Victorian drains can cope with! We can assure you - you will NOT want the next rupture to be on your section. (Name supplied) Tell your friends to pick up a copy of Rural Roundup where they see this sticker displayed in the shops around Walmer It can also be accessed on www.walmercouncil.co.uk

the mining industry in East Kent; the migration of personnel, the economics and everyday life, the strikes and closures, and the traditions that live on though the pits now they have all shut, was shown recently at Walmer Chapel. George and Louie Gibb, a couple from the chapel, were interviewed in the film, which will be installed at the Betteshanger mining museum. George Gibb Many of their friends and relatives also have a connection with the mines, so when George was given a complimentary copy, it was agreed to a oneoff showing at the chapel followed by a tea. The film which was just under two hours long in edited form and the feedback suggested many rousing memories were evoked. Clive Lambden for Walmer Chapel

Walmer Parish Churches St Mary’s, St Saviour’s and Blessed Mary of Walmer Open lives, open hands, open churches Congratulations to the candidates who were baptised, confirmed, and re-affirmed their Christian faith at our wonderful Patronal Sunday service in St Mary’s Church on 10th September. The Rt Rev’d Trevor Willmott, the Bishop of Dover, who presided at the service also gave thanks for the completion of St Mary’s Tower works. Photo courtesy of Emma Montgomery If you would like to explore more about the Christian faith then please do call the parish office – we’d love to hear from you. 1517 and all that – Reformation remembered: The 31st October this year marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther publishing his 95 Theses which is seen as the main catalyst of the Reformation. Popular legend has Luther nailing the theses to the door of Wittenburg Castle church…. We will be marking this event on Sunday 29th October at the 9.30am service in St Mary’s church when the Rev’d Johann Schneider, a retired Lutheran priest who lives in Walmer and attends St Mary’s, will preside and preach at the Eucharist. In recent years the Roman Catholic Church and other reformed and protestant Churches, like the Lutheran’s and our own Church of England, have, of course, come into closer dialogue. This is an opportunity to celebrate the increasing sense of unity amongst Christians across the globe. www.walmerparishchurches.org - 01304 366 605

Reformation – Luther: “the day that changed everything”

A Festival of Flowers – Walmer Baptist Church – 27-29 October 2017

Inspired by the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther posting his theses on the Wittenberg Church door, and sparking what we know as the Protestant Reformation. Ladies and gentlemen who enjoy floral art are working hard in preparation for a Flower Festival at Walmer Baptist Church. Depicting Luther and his counterparts, Zwingli and Calvin, along with notable figures in the English Reformation, such as Thomas Cranmer, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the displays will also include more recent reformers such as George Whitefield, Charles Spurgeon and William Booth. Working with arrangers from St Leonard’s Benefice and the Parish of Walmer Churches and with artefacts donated and loaned from other churches, including the Salvation Army Citadel, the initial idea for the festival has grown into an ecumenical project. Over the weekend of Friday 27th October – Sunday 29th October the church, situated on the corner of Dover Road and Kelvedon Road, in the centre of Walmer, will be open daily from 10am to 6pm (from Noon on Sunday) for the public to come and view the displays. Throughout the weekend refreshments will be available including soup and roll lunches and home-made cakes and pastries. Admission is free, so why not come along with friends and family and see the floral depictions of these notable figures in Church history.
