Every day I am receiving enquires from businesses asking for advertising space. I am afraid I am having to tell them that there is a long waiting list. Some people have been waiting almost a year to get an advert in! Our circulation has increased recently and copies are delivered to houses in Kingsdown, Ringwould, Ripple, Sutton, Ashley, Studdal & Little Mongeham. In Walmer a 100 copies are delivered to a different road each month accompanied by a letter telling them which shops copies can be picked up from. Shortly, Walmer Parish Council will be providing stickers for each shop to display in their window indicating that copies can be picked up. Don’t forget the next issue will be a double issue for July/August so make sure copy is sent in to cover these two months. Families flocked to Kingsdown Recreation Ground after school on Friday 12 th May as Friends of Kingsdown Play Park (FKPP) and Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council unveiled a fantastic new play area. The park had been closed for three weeks as contractors transformed it into an exciting new space for children to enjoy. Packed out for the re-opening, dozens of children were keen to get stuck in to all the new fun things to play on, including new climbing frames, swings and stand-up see-saw. There is also a soft surface to help prevent bumps and bruises. The new park received a massive thumbs-up from the children. Many were reluctant to leave and stayed on well past their tea-time, while their parents enjoyed the new seating that makes it a more sociable place to catch-up This is the first phase of the regeneration of the park and comes after nearly two years of intensive fundraising by FKPP, with the support of Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council. FKPP are thrilled to finally be in a position to start to transform the play park and it’s wonderful to receive such a great reaction from everyone. We’ve had incredible support from the local community and would like to thank everyone who has contributed so far. We’re not finished though, and we’re now working hard to get phase two underway as soon as possible, to give the village the play area it deserves. The Parish Council are delighted with the new play area, and Cllr Carol Fowler, Chair of Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council, has commended FKPP for all their hard work and vision to provide this excellent facility for the youth of the community. Future additions to the park will include an even bigger climbing frame and a zip wire for older children; along with new fencing and further surfacing. Numerous fundraising events have taken place, including: a May Day Fete, Halloween Trails, quiz nights and the local primary school children covered a total of 500 miles in a week’s worth of lunchtime sponsored walks! All of the local organisations and companies that have supported the park will be invited to the official opening, which will take place once the park is completed. For further information or if you would like to donate or get involved, please take a look at the web site: http://friendsofkingsdown.wixsite.com/kingsdownfriends Local businesses are also invited to sponsor a new piece of equipment. David Rumbelow from Dover District Council delivered a fascinating account of the journey our rubbish takes to be recycled. Glass is processed in South Wales, tetrapaks in Yorkshire, Paper and Card in North Wales, aluminium in Warrington. In Kent we only recycle hard plastic not soft, batteries go into a separate bag, tetrapaks should go into the blue recycling bin not the cardboard box and if it doesn’t come from the kitchen, bathroom or toilet then it isn’t recycling, it’s rubbish (well apart from the green waste of course). Food waste goes to Basingstoke where it is turned into biogas which powers over 3000 homes annually. If we all recycled all our food waste, Dover’s recycling ratio would increase by 50% and we would help reduce our carbon footprint considerably. Our next event is a Tree Walk led by David Carey who is from Kent Tree and Pond Partnership. On Saturday 10th June, we will meet outside the Zetland at 10:30am and walk around the village guided by David and being told all about the trees that we see. Please book your place on this walk by emailing me at the address below or calling 01304 380 974. Tickets are £3 for members and £4 for non -members. And don’t forget to enter our Green Ideas Competition. Details from Kingsdown Post Office or on line at http://www.kingsdownconservation.co.uk/ kcgcomp/. Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary:- Jane Jobey Tel:- 01304 381 702 Thank you Sue for once again letting us use your front garden for the Garage Safari Plant Sale. There is no sign of spring as yet; winter has returned to our sunny corner of Kent. However, you will be pleased to learn that the multitude of plug plants are looking good under the ever watchful eye of you know who. Hopefully the weather will improve and we can begin to look at blue instead of grey skies. The 21st June is the longest day. The extra light and warmth will encourage the garden to put on a burst of growth, so remember to keep on top of the weeds by hoeing regularly. There is always something to do in the garden so here are a few other tasks for June: Plant out summer bedding. Keep newly planted trees and shrubs watered. Stake tall perennials. Keep picking sweet pea flowers to encourage more blooms. Pinch out side shoots from tomato plants and feed once the first truss is setting fruit. There is still time to plant runner beans directly into the ground. June 11th – Don’t forget the visit to RHS Garden Wisley – June 26th - The summer social – members only. August 13th the Annual Show. (Schedules available from the Ox Tale, Upper Street, Kingsdown) Fingers crossed for a good summer – see you on the beach hopefully. Stay Healthy. Bob Perry

By the time you read this, all of the SATs and Government tests that the children have to sit will be over and we will be starting the final part of the Summer Term. In this half term, we have lots of exciting activities planned, including taster sailing sessions at Dover, two residential trips and lots of sporting events. We will also be saying goodbye to two much loved members of staff at the end of this academic year, Michelle Collins and Jo Turpin. Both have contributed so much to the school over the many years that they have been with us. Michelle works tirelessly in the school office, ensuring the school continues to be in a strong financial position and Jo has taken a lead with our environmental education, resulting in the school gaining green flag Eco status twice. We will greatly miss both Michelle and Jo and wish them well for the future. Sporting news….On Tuesday 18th April, a Year 4-5 Boys Football Team took part in a Year 5-6 team tournament at Goodwin Academy. The team played well all through the tournament, despite being a young team they enjoyed the afternoon. Unfortunately, we didn't quite make the semi-finals, but the boys should be very proud of their performance. On Wednesday 19th April, a Year 3-4 Mixed Football Team took part in a tournament at Goodwin Academy. The team played fantastically well and didn't lose a match. The team progressed to the semi-final and then the final against River. This match was very close and was a draw after full time, but we eventually won the match during extra time, winning the whole tournament. Congratulations all of you for this amazing result. On Tuesday 25th April, two Year 3-4 Mixed tennis teams took part in a tennis tournament at Tides Leisure Centre. The A team played exceptionally well and didn't lose a match and finished third overall on points. The B team showed some amazing determination and finished fifth overall. Congratulations to both teams for their hard work. On Thursday 27th April, a Year 5 team took part in a Year 5-6 Handball Tournament at Sandwich Technology School. The team played brilliantly even though this was a new sport that they had only just tried. The team finished third overall and should be very proud of themselves. On Tuesday 2nd May a Year 1-2 Mixed Team Football Team took part in a football tournament at Sandwich Technology School. The children played fantastic football really showing off their skills. The team progressed to the finals and eventually won the whole competition. Congratulations for this fabulous result. On Friday 12th May the boy’s A football team played a league match against Parochial. The match was really close and the boys played amazing football. The final score was a draw at 2-2. Congratulations to the team for their performance and this means that we finish at the top of our league. On Tuesday 18th April two Year 5-6 Mixed Netball Teams took part in a Netball tournament at Duke of York’s Military School. Many other teams were there. Both teams played great Netball and had a lovely afternoon. Unfortunately, we didn't quite make the semi-finals finishing fifth and sixth overall. Both teams should be very proud of themselves. Notes from the meetings held on 2 nd May 2017 at the Community Centre Studdal AGM Sutton Parish Council held their Annual General meeting on 2 nd May 2017 at 7.00 pm. Cllr Merriman was elected as Chair and Cllr Akhurst as Vice-Chairman for the coming year. Planning The Parish Council considered five planning applications. The planning log is up and running on the website for parishioners to check local applications. Review of internal controls The Parish Council reviewed their internal controls and approved the revisions made to the Asset Register and the Risk Assessment. Traffic Survey After an issue with one of the rumble strips, the date for the traffic survey has been set for the week beginning Monday 8th May 2017. Local Events The village litter pick was organised by local resident Claire Inglin and had been very successful with 14 local residents participating. The area to be litter picked had been curtailed because of the new District Council Risk assessment not covering any roads above the 30mph speed limit. Positioning of the remembrance plaque at the allotments had been an enjoyable event with both past and present members of the parish council meeting up to remember Ray Odell who had been a Parish Councillor for the village. Cllr Little was thanked for arranging the event and Mr Joe Stroud had been thanked for all the hard work of making the allotments and orchard area look so nice and tidy for the event. Pictures and information on both of these events are on the Parish Council website. Insurance The Parish Council discussed the renewal of the insurance policy and decided to renew with Hiscox. Brocante

Despite the inclement weather the 2017 May Day Brocante organised by Walmer Parish Council was described by stallholders as ‘the best ever.’ There were over 160 stalls booked up and dozens of applicants turned away because Walmer Green was full. An estimated three thousand bargain hunters defied the rain and cold winds to visit the Brocante and search for bargains. Among the collections of vintage clothes, furniture, silverware, paintings, antiques and toys several items stood out. The stuffed fox keeping dry in the opened boot of a car, the boar’s head on a stall with a statue of St Francis of Assisi and the half size African male carving which spent the day leaning up against the steps to the bandstand. Experts from the Canterbury Auction Gallery were sheltered by the bandstand as they carried out dozens of free valuations of assorted antiques and jewellery. The event meant a lot of extra work for Parish Councillors and the clerk, Kirsty Holroyd , who worked on a rota starting at five o’clock in the morning to mark out the pitches before the stallholders arrived. Then, with the aid of stewards and volunteers from the Deal Carnival Committee, they supervised parking, dealt with enquiries and queries and were on hand all day in high visibility waterproof yellow jackets to help stallholders and visitors. At the end of the day other councillors went around the site and picked up all the rubbish that had been left behind to return Walmer Green to its original pristine condition. – as if no-one had been there all day. Councillor Pat Heath, chairman of Walmer Parish Council, thanked the stall holders and the thousands who attended and helped raise money for local charities.

Councillors Clive Grant, Pat Heath and Clerk Kirsty Holroyd take a break to compare notes during the Brocante. Every month, on a Saturday morning the Council holds advice surgeries at its offices on the Strand which are attended by councillors. Police advice surgeries are now held on a weekday. Anyone needing advice is welcome to attend. Full details on the council’s website, www.walmerparishcouncil.co.uk

Kingsdown & Ringwould WI Secretary: - Linda Dalton Email: - lindadalton4@gmail.com May is always the month that the WI gets down to business, so to soften the seriousness of the afternoon, the committee treated us all to a delicious cream tea, with table service included! We had two Resolutions to discuss, to be submitted for voting at the National Annual General Meeting. Both were very different but equally important. The first was to call on the Government and industry to research and develop innovative solutions to stop the accumulation of microplastic fibres in our oceans. A complicated and challenging resolution, needing long term scientific commitment. The second resolution was for every WI to work alongside health and social care providers and with local community initiatives to raise awareness of the causes and impacts of loneliness in order to offer appropriate assistance and support to lonely people. This is something I think all of us could identify with. Lively discussion ensued, and both Resolutions were carried unanimously. Even in the WI we cannot escape beaurocracy; under the umbrella of the Data Protection Act, the Federation has issued a new form for members’ details. It has been noted that members’ dates of birth are no longer required. A discussion followed concerning this omission...even though we can include a member’s birthday in our records, which means she is still eligible to receive a birthday card, we certainly cannot include the year of birth! We definitely live on the edge of political correctness in the WI! There are lots of pleasant events to look forward to...a cream tea (we like our cream tea) in August in a member’s lovely garden; a visit to Down House in September are but two. Next month we meet in Ringwould Village Hall on June 12th at 2pm, to hear Lucy Waterson talk on the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. Do come! Christine Smith

Walmer Horse & Dog Show – Sunday 11th June 2017 This year will be the 40th running of the Walmer Horse & Dog Show to be held again in the Walmer Castle paddocks with the kind permission of English Heritage. The Show is run to give local riders and owners the opportunity to participate in formal competition on a large show ground. We invite competitors to participate and spectators to witness an exciting day of equestrian and canine competition, serious and not so serious, and anticipate attendance by horse and dog owners from the local area and from across south east Kent. The Show continues to run and to raise funds for charity due to the generous sponsorship and support of local businesses and families to whom we are most grateful. This year we are supporting Riding for the Disabled Cornilo branch, Martha Trust and Chancepixies. Setting up and running the Show over the weekend is a significant undertaking and the Show organisers would welcome any volunteers who feel they could contribute to the weekend’s activities, or indeed to the future success of the Show. It need not be an open-ended commitment! We hope the weather will be kind to us and that you all have a memorable day. For further information, please visit our website www.thewalmerhorseanddogshow.co.uk or facebook page. Or contact Simon Pollard 01304 373 878, Mobile: 07725 424 888 . Email: s.pollard@loc-group.com

Abandoned cars

An increasing nuisance for residents in rural areas is fly-tipping and apparently abandoned vehicles which are causing annoyance and frustration for local residents. But as long as a vehicle is taxed and mot’d and is not causing an obstruction it can park on the public roads. But how do we know if a car is taxed now that the government has discontinued tax discs in favour of vehicle license plate recognition cameras? And good citizens, aware of how busy the police are and reluctant to waste their time – but now you don’t have to. Walmer Parish Council thought it would be useful to share this link with you all regarding possible abandoned vehicles https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle -tax Just enter the registration number and make of the vehicle and it will advise if vehicle is taxed or MOT tested. If it’s not taxed or MOT’d then it may well be abandoned and that’s the time to alert the police if a vehicle is causing you problems. You can contact them on the non-emergency number: 101. For all other issues relating to abandoned vehicles, view your local council website for advice as well as when and how to make a report. 31

Lifeboat carwash. It was business as usual for Walmer’s lifeboat crew last month, despite over 30 volunteers being up to their elbows in soapy water! The RNLI crews and supporters were holding a charity car wash to raise cash to help fund this invaluable service when they received an emergency call. A Canterbury fisherman had fallen from his small boat into the cold sea near The Butts at Kingsdown. So it was ‘down sponges’ for the lifeboat crew who rushed to launch their rescue boat and within ten minutes of the call the fisherman was plucked out of the water. The crew also rescued his kayak while they were there! A timely reminder of why we need to support this invaluable service. The man was given oxygen and casualty care as he was being brought back to the Walmer Lifeboat station where he waited in a special drying room until an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital in Margate for a check-up. Then it was back to the buckets and sponges for the volunteers who between them washed a record 130 cars – three more than last year so it’s a new record - raising £1,321 for the Lifeboat charity as they did so.

Kite reminder Want to see some weird and wonderful creatures flying over Walmer beach - then don’t forget the big kite day on Saturday June 10th. Taking place from eleven in the morning until four in the afternoon there will be demonstrations of a collection of weird and wonderful kites and free kite making lessons for children. And don’t forget. If you don’t want to stand about on Walmer Green you will still be able to see the kites flying while enjoying some refreshment outside one of the excellent eating places on the Strand and the Green. 33

Are you passionate, enthusiastic and up for a new challenge? Do you like meeting new people, want to learn new skills and provide valuable support to local residents? Kent County Council, working in conjunction with the Kent Association of Local Councils is introducing an exciting new Volunteer Support Warden role in selected areas. The role will be challenging but rewarding and you’ll be making a real difference to local communities. For more information and to find out which areas this role is being launched contact Community Wardens on 03000 413 455 or visit www.kent.gov.uk/ communitywardens . Kingsdown golfer Robert Paul, a member of the popular Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club, is setting off to defend the unique World Championship title which he won a year ago in Scotland. Robert is the current World One Armed Golf Champion and this month at the Tynemouth Golf Club in Tyne & Wear, he will be defending his crown by taking on the best one armed golfers in the world – many of whom are better players than most two handed golfers. Robert, who works for American Golf at the Stonelees Golf Club in Thanet, has cerebral palsy which affects his right side, plays off seven handicap – which puts him among the top five or six percentage of all golfers in the world, including those with two arms. The silver salver which was presented to Robert when he won the title at the Craigielaw Golf Club in Scotland last year, was first presented to the Association by Rowans Ltd Glasgow in 1933. Initially the club was set up for veterans who had lost a limb during the 1st World War but in 1937 its scope was widened to include those who had lost an arm through accidents or were unable to use one of their arms because of birth defects or strokes. There is only one criteria to belong to this special club and that is to play golf with one arm – but to become world champion you would have to play very well indeed against stiff competition. We wish Robert well in the Championship . 37
