Hi Everyone, I expect you have already noticed the ‘New Look’ Rural Roundup. This issue has been printed on a quality gloss paper, which produces brighter pictures and a sharper text which is easier to read. I think you will all agree it is an improvement to the publication and I am in no doubt that the advertisers will welcome the change. Kingsdown Remembers the Fallen ‘2016 on Friday 21st April (see page 7) this should be an interesting evening where a Poppy DVD that was made at Cathy’s last service at Kingsdown will be shown. The DVDs will be on sale and the profit will go to Kingsdown Heritage fund. Plans are in the pipeline to put a copy of Rural Roundup on Facebook each month and also we are looking into setting up a website for the publication. If there is anyone who is willing to assist with this, please contact me and I will be only too willing to meet up to discuss it further. In the mean-time, if you or a friend would like to receive an electronic copy of Rural Roundup please email me and I will add you to the mailing list. Kingsdown Rocks Saturday 8th April Bingo in Kingsdown Village Hall 7.30pm A Note From the Kingsdown Village Hall

At the recent meeting of Kingsdown Village Hall, the Trustees looked forward to the completion of the refurbishment of the windows April, and also made plans for the AGM. The trustees were dismayed to hear that neighbours of the Hall had been disturbed by excessive noise and inconsiderate parking at a recent letting. We will, of course, endeavour to ensure that in future such annoyance does not recur. Alan Smith on behalf of the VH Trustees

Whist Drive at Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club on Friday 5 th May.

We would like to invite you to join us. It is progressive whist so you can come without a partner. The function starts at 6.30pm for 7.00pm sharp. The cost is £8 per head for prizes and a filled jacket potato at the interval. The bar will be open. No jeans or trainers are allowed to be worn in the clubhouse. Please pre-book with Chris and Julie on 01304 379 201 or email juliaatgarden@aol.com

St John’s Heritage Association

The St John’s Heritage Association AGM will be held on 10th April in the Church at 7.00pm and we welcome all members of the Association and villagers with an interest in the church to attend. Refreshments will be provided. The meeting will announce the results of last year and the proposed events for 2017. All suggestions from the floor for future events will be welcomed. The committee is looking for new members to help with our fund-raising events that are so important to the future of the church. There are many plans afoot that will require substantial income but we also need a regular input just to stand still. The church needs constant attention and there is an on-going commitment to the restoration of the stained glass windows and the stonework to the bell-tower. Please give this your serious consideration; we look forward to welcoming you. David Dobby PCSO Kerry Skirrow and Community Warden Martin Dadd will be carrying out street surgeries in Kingsdown and Ringwould on the following dates and times. If you have any issues to raise, please pop along and speak to them. Monday 3rd April 2.45pm to 3.15pm outside Kingsdown Village Store. If you cannot make any of the surgeries, you can contact or email csu.dover@kent.pnn.police.uk

Working towards a sustainable future for the Village Kingsdown Conservation Group wants to move forward on sustainability. We recognise that we need to work closely with other interested parties to ensure we support existing initiatives and achieve meaningful results, especially on issues such as low carbon. We are in touch with the Parish Council and Rippledown Environmental Education Centre and would like to hear from other interested individuals and organisations in our community. We are keen to include conservation of local wildlife and woodland, a competition open to all for new ideas and last but not least recycling - this one will feature in the talk by Brian Rumbelow, Waste Services Assistant, Dover District Council on April 25th, ‘Recycle the Present, Save the Future’. Brian is very enthusiastic about his subject and full of astonishing facts. Doors open 7:30pm for free drinks at Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary School; Members Forum 7:45pm; talk starts when Members’ Forum finishes and not later than 8.00pm. £3 members, £4 non-members. Hedgehogs will be waking up now. They love minced meat, tinned dog food (non-fish based), fresh liver and even scrambled eggs! But, although they like milk it can be very bad for them and so it’s best to stick with water. And now that Spring is sprung you will want to get out more so why not join our committee? I am sorry that we had to cancel the Seaweeds talk at such short notice.

For sustainability contact: bulletin@kingsdownconservation.co.uk Anne-Marie: talks@kingsdownconservation.co.uk

Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary:- Mr T Ridley-Ellis Tel:- 01304 381 084 Well Spring has sprung at last along with lighter evenings! The Head Gardener and I have now decided that the front garden is in need of a major makeover. We are in early design thoughts at the moment and would like to end up with a garden that is very low maintenance, has interesting plants together with possible shingle and bark chippings. Decisions, decisions - watch this space! A few things you can do in the garden this month: 1. Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a slow release fertiliser. 2. Dig into your beds compost and a general purpose fertiliser such as chicken pellets or blood, fish and bone. 3. Lift and divide perennials. 4. Prune Penstemons cutting the old shoots to the base or just above any new growth. Here are some dates for your diary: Monday the 24th April our guest speaker is Steve Bradley talking about patio planting. Sunday 7th May we will be holding our annual plant sale in conjunction with Kingsdown Safari. Monday 22th May Colin Moat will be telling us about plants suitable for the shade. I hope to see you all at Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School for a 7.30pm for 7.45 pm start on Monday 24th April. Stay Healthy Bob Perry 9

Head teacher: - Jo Hygate, Glen Road, Kingsdown, CT14 8DD. Secretary Maggi Bowden, Tel:- 01304 373 734 Email:- maggibowdkingsdownringwould.kent.sch.uk As you are reading this the school will be in full preparations as we move towards the festival of Easter. The children will be learning about the Easter story and leading our Easter worship. One of the highlights of the last term was the Year 3/4 production “Oh What A Knight”. It was an outstanding performance, thoroughly enjoyed by all who watched. Our sporting teams have been extremely busy. Some of the highlights are:- The Infant agility team winning the Dover heat of the Jo Hygate multi-skills competition for the second year running. This means they will progress to county finals in June. The boys football team winning against St Mary’s Deal 3 – 1. The girls football team winning against St Mary’s Deal 1 – 0. Thank you very much to the three villagers who came forward after my last month’s Rural Roundup piece to take on the role of School Governor. The Governing team are now back up to our full strength with the right skill set to take the school forward in a challenging educational landscape.

Walmer Contact:- Kirsty Holroyd Tel:- 01304 362 363 mail:- walmerparish@btconnect.com The Royal Marines Heritage Trails - Deal & Walmer – progressing well. Funding support from Walmer Council, the Marine Sergeants Mess Pantomime and Deal Town Council have enabled trustees of the fledgling Royal Marines Heritage Trails of Deal and Walmer to make significant progress. In March a hugely successful "Curriculum Development Walk" took pupils from all 11 local Primary Schools and the Goodwin Academy in Walmer along the proposed route The walk was followed by an afternoon Presentation of "The Royal Marines Today" from two serving Royal Marines - a Commando and a member of the Royal Marines Band Service - at The Deal Parochial School. Work is now underway at these 12 schools on a Children's Curriculum Project based on the Heritage of the Royal Marines in this area. Also, the group’s Research Team is engaged in a wide-ranging project to ensure that the heritage of the Royal Marines in this area is pulled together in such a way as to engage with as wide an audience as possible. I would like to thank all those concerned with funding and working on this remarkable and exciting community endeavour. Bill Butler, Founding Trustee.

Beware emails and ‘phone calls bearing gifts or trying to panic you. More money was stolen by on-line scammers last year than ever before. The way they work is simple – they send you an email designed to trick you into handing over confidential information about your bank accounts which will enable them to access and steal from that account. The most important thing you need to know is that your bank, building society or BT will never ask you for secret information such as pin codes and that anyone who does is likely to be a thief after your cash. The most common scams arrive by email and you should look out for – and immediately delete – the following • Emails that begin with general greetings like ‘Dear Customer’. • Emails with a sense of urgency – perhaps suggesting that if you don’t act now your bank accounts will be frozen – they won’t be. • Well known website links can be forged to look similar to the proper address. If there is one letter out of place, then ignore it. • Any request for personal information about your user name, password or bank account details is a pretty good indication of thieves at work. • Many scams come from abroad and one thing to look out for is poor spelling and grammar. Sometimes you might receive a telephone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft and telling you that your computer is in danger but they can access it remotely and fix it – for a price. Microsoft will never telephone you and the chances are that your computer does not have a problem at all – it’s just a way to con people out of money for nothing. If you’re worried about your computer get help from a local repair company or call or email your internet service provider’s helpline. [They’re the people you pay your internet bills to]. The golden rule is simple. IF you are not sure then just delete the email without even opening it. If it’s an unexpected ‘phone call tell them you can’t speak at that moment.

Kingsdown & Ringwould WI Secretary: - Linda Dalton Email: - lindadalton4@gmail.com As the days lengthen and the coast of France becomes ever clearer across the Channel, our thoughts turn naturally to things gastronomical.....I mean snails! The advertised speaker on chocolate was unable to come to our March meeting, so we were greatly entertained by Helen Howard, who is a snail farmer! Helen was attracted to growing snails because, she told us, they don’t take up much space, they are not noisy, they love to explore the environment, and they make good pets, as watching them has a calming influence! She also added that they have no ears, so one can talk about garlic butter without offending them. We learnt such a lot! I didn’t know that snails laid eggs, that they are terrible parents, and in spite of us thinking otherwise, they are in great peril in our gardens, as just about every other creature around, eats them! Helen sells her live snails (she sends them through the post!) to chefs’ restaurants, and chiefly to all the major zoos in the UK for Reptile food, (that is rather disappointingly unromantic don’t you think?) Some of us had the chance to cuddle one or two. Others didn’t.... There is a lot to look forward to in the future. Terry Waite is the speaker at the Annual Council Meeting, our meeting in April is the Spring Lunch for members and their invited guests; we are looking forward to our trip to Eltham Palace on May 10 th. Do come along to our next meeting on Monday May 8th in Kingsdown Village Hall, at 2.00pm,when we shall be discussing resolutions to present at the Annual Meeting, a very important annual debate on issues about which WI members nationally, feel strongly. There will of course be some light relief as well! Christine Smith

From The Reverend John Winn Dear Friends On Sunday March the 6th a public meeting was held in the Sutton Communion Hall in order to launch a consultation document laying down proposals for the future of the churches in the villages of KIngsdown, Ringwould, Ripple and Sutton. By now the proposals will have been well promulgated and most people will have had a chance to see them and offer their reaction. At the public meeting the Archdeacon of Ashford, The Venerable Phillip Down, explained the reasoning behind these proposals and encouraged us all to look at them carefully, not only with a view to solving a number of organisational difficulties but also providing an opportunity to further strengthen our fellowship together, and our co-operation in the cause of mission among the people of our villages. At Easter we celebrate what was arguably the most momentous event in human history, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For hundreds of years the Jewish people had longed for a Messiah who would come among them as their Saviour. It was a long and difficult journey for them, a journey not without pain of gradual awareness and awakening to God’s purpose for his people on earth. It took a long time for Christ to be fully accepted as this Messiah but the resurrection event was an entirely new beginning for human-kind, a chance to build a new relationship with God through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and his subsequent rising from the dead. As our churches draw closer together in a new relationship, a new beginning, let us pray that our coming together may not only strengthen our fellowship with each other but also our sense of God’s purpose for his Church. Just before Jesus entered the Garden of Gethsemane, only to be betrayed by Judas, he had spent some time in conversation with his disciples and during a time of prayer with them he prayed not only they but all who came after them might be one, as he and his Heavenly Father are one. As we continue on our journey of closer union may we truly take this to heart. May I wish you all a very happy Easter. John.

Palm Sunday, Sunday 9th April St John the Evangelist, Kingsdown will be processing to the church for the Palm Sunday service. The procession will leave the school at 9.10 and will be lead by two donkeys, weather permitting. Do come and bring your children. At 11.00, after the service, we will be holding the Annual Meeting to which all are welcome.

Easter Sunday, Sunday 16th April St John the Evangelist, Kingsdown will be holding a Family Communion at 9.30, after which there will be an Easter egg hunt. Elizabeth Bembridge 31

HELP WALMER BLOOM THIS SUMMER It’s that time of year again – Spring is in the air and Walmer Parish Council is launching this year’s Walmer in Bloom Competition – and you don’t have to have a big garden to take part. The first step has been for local schools to enter children’s art work in the Walmer in Bloom design a poster competition and entries are already pouring in. The Walmer in Bloom committee are inviting Walmer residents to consider nominating their front gardens for the Local Garden Competition in the following categories: Front gardens (residential), Best small garden, Best Container (basket/tub/window box) Best Businesses and Other Organisations. Judges will tour the Parish, during week beginning 3rd of July, looking for vibrant and colourful floral displays and the final judging taking place the week after. Winners in each category will be selected from Lower, Middle and Upper Walmer and there will be overall winners in the following categories: Best overall garden - Deal Society Trophy; Best overall small garden – Prize sponsored by Walmer Parish Councils Chairman Cllr Pat Heath Best overall Container - Deal & District Lioness Club Award. There will be an awards ceremony on Sunday 10th September 2017 at the Sea Scouts Headquarters in Marine Road, Walmer. The Chair of the Walmer in Bloom Committee, Cllr Sue Le Chevalier, said “We all love working on Walmer in Bloom because this competition brings the whole community together and helps make a dynamic impact on the local scenery, whether it is with carefully sculpted flower beds or vibrant cascading hanging baskets and containers.” She added “We are also very grateful to the local businesses which sponsor the maintenance of the floral planters and the hanging floral displays which decorate Walmer seafront and The Strand so beautifully from May until September every year A slideshow of last year’s winners can be seen at www.youtube.com, search ‘Walmer in Bloom 2016’ If you would like to sponsor this year’s Walmer in Bloom Campaign or enter the Local Garden Competition, then please contact the Parish Office on 01304 362 363 or email clerk@walmercouncil.co.uk

Who wants to be a volunteer? Have you ever wondered how you might be able to ‘give something back’ by volunteering to help others but didn’t quite know how to go about it? Well, now’s your chance to find out. The Dover District Volunteering Centre, together with the Thanet Volunteer Bureau, is holding a Volunteers Fair at Dover Town Hall, on April 11th where over 50 different voluntary organisations will be available to show potential volunteers what’s available in East Kent. There will be more than 50 stalls from voluntary, public and private sector organisations in Dover district and hundreds of potential volunteers are expected to attend the event free. All you have to do is turn up and if you have friends who are interested in finding out more about volunteering then please invite them along too. And if you can’t decide which organisation you’d like to support on the day there will be a free booklet to take home with you which will have details of all the voluntary organisations inside it. So if you are interested then simply turn up at Dover Town Hall on Tuesday April 11th at any time from eleven in the morning until two o’clock. Sponsor a local runner. Hi, I've lived in Kingsdown for nearly three years now, and have seen the fantastic effort from so many people from the area, to raise funds for our local charities, and I thought it was time I made a contribution too. So late last year I decided to enter the Brighton Marathon and attempt to raise money for Kingsdown Pre-school and Friends of Kingsdown Play Park. Both of my daughters attend the Pre-school and I know both will benefit from the fantastic new park equipment, so for me it was an obvious choice, and I know that every penny raised will be a huge benefit to both causes. I only actually took up running last summer, so I knew the training was going to be tough, but nothing could prepare me for the time I'd have to dedicate to be able to run any sort of distance. In July last year I couldn’t even run for 1 mile without stopping for breath, but now as you read this, I will have completed my longest training run of 20 miles. I'm asking if you could kindly donate some money towards my marathon run which takes place on April 9th. Any money raised will be split equally between these great charities. To donate, please visit :- www.justgiving.com and search for either Kingsdown Pre-school or Friends of Kingsdown Play Park or sponsorship forms can also be found at Pre-school and Del’s village shop. So if you see me running along the seafront, feel free to shout some words of encouragement! Many thanks, Russ Mead
