Hello everyone, Thank you to everyone for the messages received following my knee operation. It has taken somewhat longer than I anticipated but I can now report I am retuning to normal. You will see on page seven results of the Kingsdown & Ringwould Front Gardens in Bloom. Again this year it was a pleasure to be involved. Unfortunately we have had to cancel the proposed “Open Gardens” for September owing to lack of interest. Mainly due to our bad timing but we will certainly take this on board and rectify it for next year by arranging to stage both the events a bit earlier. The organisers of Kingsdown Rocks very kindly decided to make a donation to Rural Roundup from the proceeds of the event. A very kind gesture, and please accept many thanks from the editorial team. May I take this opportunity to remind everyone that we depend largely on donations to produce this popular publication and we are always delighted to receive any contributions however large or small. The WI members throughout East Kent are busy knitting for ‘The Benefit of Others’ during their Centenary Year. They are knitting items for Prem Babies at the QEQM and William Harvey Hospitals, Fingerless Gloves for Heart and Arthritis Patients also Hats, Gloves and Blankets for the homeless. More wool is desperately needed. So if you have any oddments of double knitting wool you would like to pass on it would be much appreciated. Please contact me on 01304 362 333 to make arrangements for it to be collected. Talking about helping others. I note Cathy mentioned the Food Bank in her letter. It occurred to me that whilst doing your weekly shop, do you, pick up the ‘buy one get one free’ or the ‘buy one get one half price’ even if you don’t really need the second item, then donate it at the collection point? It’s worth thinking about if you don’t already do it. See you next month. All the best, Ed. Editor:- Doreen Clark, Popinjay Balmoral Road, Kingsdown. Head teacher - Jo Hygate Glen Road, Kingsdown, CT14 8DD Tel: 01304 373 734 Secretary - Email: maggibowden@kingsdown-ringwould.kent.sch.uk The children of Kingsdown & Ringwould Primary School raised an incredible £1,700 for The National Autistic Society and new play equipment for Kingsdown Park at the end of Jun, when they sacrificed their lunch breaks to walk 3,500 laps of the school field! We would like to say a huge thank you to all the families and friends who generously sponsored the children, to Rose Cope who organised the event on our behalf and, of course, to all the children who took part. It was a fantastic commitment from the whole school community. We would also like to thank everyone who kindly donated a bottle to our Barrow of Booze or bought a ticket or two in the hope of winning the contents at the recent Kingsdown Rocks music festival. We raised an incredible £851 towards the park project. Congratulations to Mr Richard Siddans who was the lucky winner and got to take the barrow home! If you’re still not familiar with us yet, Friends of Kingsdown Play Park is a relatively new community group set up by local parents to improve the village play area. We’re planning to completely rejuvenate the park with lots of new children’s play equipment, extra seating areas and outdoor gym equipment for all ages to enjoy. We’ve a lot to achieve to make this a reality, though, so if you’d like to help in any way, we’d love to hear from you. As well as applying for grants from a variety of local and national funding bodies, we will continue to hold fundraising events following the success of our Garage Safari stall, sponsored walk and Barrow of Booze raffle. Our next event will be a Scarecrow Trail on Sunday 27th September. Please keep an eye out for posters around the village. If you have any fundraising ideas, offers of help or you would like to know more, please contact us: www.friendsofkingsdown.wix.com/kingsdownfriends e-mail friendsofkingsdownplaypark@gmail.com or find us on facebook Many thanks, Lisa Dennison – FKPP Chair
SCARECROW TRAIL Come and join Friends of Kingsdown Play Park for a Harvest inspired afternoon of family fun! With art and craft activities in the hall on your return, tea, a great selection of homemade cakes and a raffle, there's something for everyone! Why not make a scarecrow at home and bring it along to enter our best dressed scarecrow competition! Come rain or shine, please come and join us for a funfilled afternoon. Entry £2 per child. Raising funds for new play equipment at Kingsdown Park. All proceeds from the raffle, though, will be donated to Deal Food Bank. For more details, contact Lisa on 239 704.

Excitement in Bluebell Woods, Kingsdown.
The summer holidays had just begun and to celebrate I took my 12-year old granddaughter to Bluebell Woods. When we got to the crater, there was the swing hanging over it invitingly and not another child in sight. Ruby had never been on it before and crept towards it with a mixture of excitement and fear. Once she had managed to scramble on to the log, she swung into the void very gently. The rope started to rotate into wider and wider circles and Ruby was frightened she would crash against the surrounding trees. Gradually she became more confident: learned to push herself away from the trees with her foot and pull up on the rope until she was standing on the log. For decades now that rope has been hanging over the bowl in the woods. My children used it over forty years ago; Liz Evans enjoying a swing my granddaughter has now followed her parents; and the other day I was with a group of pensioners who couldn’t resist its charms. There must have been a whole succession of people who have ensured that the swing is always there and the latest edition is better than ever. Whoever has renewed it, I would like to thank them for the joy it gives to people of all ages and ask them: “How do you do it?” Sue Gregory.
Kingsdown Rocks A big thank you to all who turned up for a great day of music. Well done to Mike, Sue, Steph, and Gemma for all their hard work. And thank you to Celia for letting us use the Post Office to sell tickets etc. Look out for dates for next year’s Kingsdown Rocks. Many thanks Stephen. Ringwould History Society I would like to thank all those who came to see the Ringwould History Society's Exhibition on "Ringwould and Kingsdown - The Way We Were" on 8th and 9th August. Seeing so many interested people looking through the documents on display and asking questions made all the hard work put in by the Committee well worth while. Jean Winn's guided tour of Ringwould, all those cups of tea and cake that you bought and your generous donations resulted in a small profit of £124. This money will be put towards our next project, which the Committee will soon be working on. Thank you also to the villagers who helped us set up the exhibition and then take it all down again. Those extra pairs of hands and your willingness to join in were greatly appreciated.

Dear Friends
Counting our blessings Just where has the summer gone? It really wasn’t long ago that we were looking forward to the schools breaking up, to long days of summer sun (we really haven’t done too badly this year), and eating outdoors. And now it won’t be long until Autumn begins to set in and we look forward to celebrating Harvest - a time to reflect on how fortunate we are to have such a wealth of food readily available to us, a situation which is far from reality for many in the world. We are truly blessed in so many ways, but many more are not as fortunate: If you own just one Bible, you are abundantly blessed. One third of the world does not have access to even one. If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who will not survive the week.. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million people around the world. If you attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed that almost three billion people in the world. If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. If your parents are still married and alive, you are very rare. If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not. If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer God's healing touch. If you prayed yesterday and today, you are in the minority because you believe in God's willingness to hear and answer prayer. At the end of this month our parishes will be celebrating our blessings with services of Harvest Festival. So as we count our blessings, please do think about those who do not have as much as we do, and if you can, please donate to one of the many charities supporting those who do not have access to the very basics needed to support life: i.e. food, water and/or shelter. And if you can, please donate some food to the local Deal Foodbank. Drop off points are in the supermarkets, or alternatively please donate gifts of food (tins, and dried food – not fresh please) via your local parish church and we will pass them on. On behalf of those who are not as fortunate as we are – thank you. Every blessing to you all, Yours in Christ, Cathy
Many thanks to ‘Kingsdown Rocks’ for the very kind donation towards the church repairs. 21

Prior to the Parish Council meeting on July 16th, the Chairman of the Parish Council, Daphne Lee, presented ex-Councillor Alan Prior and his wife Edwina with a locally painted picture of Ripple Mill together with an arrangement of flowers, to thank Alan for his 20 plus years of service on the Parish Council and Edwina for always helping with the food on Bonfire Nights. The gifts were funded by the current councillors and the Clerk. Alan and Edwina will continue to be eyes and ears around the village, letting us know of any problems and to assist with the Bonfire Nights for which we are grateful. There is a new Community Warden assigned to the St. Margaret’s Ward and it is hoped that he will be able to visit the village soon on a more regular basis Unfortunately, all the wardens are also involved with Operation Stack, which takes priority. The speaker at our July meeting was Ken Chapman from the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust. He said that Kent is the only county in Britain to have three birds named after the area, i.e. Sandwich Tern, Kentish Plover and Dartford Warbler. The Observatory sees an average of 235 different species in a year and this is the first year that avocets have bred in East Kent. His talk and photos were so interesting that the Trust, which has about 600 members, is sure to attract more members now. A meeting is not held in August but one of our members very kindly offered us a chance to hold a cream tea in her garden on the Leas with wonderful views of the Channel. The weather was glorious and we had a great afternoon. Also in August the walking group chartered a boat at Sandwich and went seal-watching. Another lovely sunny afternoon and lots of photos were taken of the basking seals. The next meeting is on Monday September 14th at 2.00 pm at Ringwould Village Hall when the speaker will be a representative from Carers’ Support. This should be very interesting and visitors are welcome. Lisa Souter Welcome back after what has been a very acceptable summer, I think you will agree. I have been able to wear shorts more often than not. As a society we have had some very enjoyable events; starting with our Question and Answer evening on 29th June Our thanks to Imogen and Angela for dealing with the questions. We must make other evenings like this possible, perhaps drawing on the skills and knowledge of the membership! Our visit to Penshurst Place and Gardens on the 5th July was a huge success, thanks to Barbara. On the 27th July we went on an orchard tour to Chandler and Dunn fruit farm near Wingham. A big “well done” to Clive who made the visit so interesting and compelling. Finally, our annual show on Sunday 23rd August. I can only hope that it was an outstanding success; by the time you read this we will know one way or the other. The Head Gardener is very pleased with the hanging baskets and troughs this year. She believes it is as a result of mixing some of our home produced compost with peat free compost. The mix had better water retention properties. The exact proportion of mix is known only to her. Our programme for the rest of the year is as follows: 28th September – a talk by Heather Silk entitled “Witches Butter to Witches Broom” Fungi, trees and more 26th October – AGM – please do not forget to read your copy of the proposed constitution. 30th November – Christmas Party I hope you have had an enjoyable and enthusiastic gardening year We certainly have. By the way, haven’t the roses been amazing? In the meantime stay healthy and I look forward to seeing you soon. Bob Perry 33

Tuesday 8th September: A talk by Ed Santry of the Marine Conservation Society will take place at Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary School. All are welcome Members ÂŁ3, non Members ÂŁ4. Registration from 7.30pm for an 8pm start. The AGM in July was very well attended, and a number of members came forward to help with events, although more are still needed. We are very pleased that Simon Longland has agreed to take over the role of Treasurer and for anyone wishing to join KCG the contact for membership is Peter Cross on 01304 239 928. At the meeting we were told an offer had been made to recycle the old timber when the new groyne field work commences on the beach, later in the year.Helen Williams is heading up the project, and is asking KCG members to join her in finding carpenters, builders etc. to help give the baulks of timber a new lease of life. Ideas put forward so far have been benches, planters and attractive sculptures. Any other ideas for reuse will be welcome. Please email Helen hmjwilliams@hotmail.co.uk or telephone 01304 373 602. It was good to see that a number of villagers had taken part during August in the national Big Butterfly Count - do look at the website of Butterfly Conservation and see the wonderful variety of butterflies that visited the village.
