Знаменитая Нью-йоркская модель Маргарита Бабина расскажет о своих любимых местах, например, о том, где находится лучшая баня в Калининграде.
September is a month that gives start to some aspirations, you are eager to look for new courses, spend time at famous performances of “Baltic Seasons”, and say farewell to sunny days. Our new issue is devoted to health, beauty and intellectual pastimes. We have something for history buffs and peaceful travellers - the pathway of Queen Louise. Концерт группы Anacondaz в клубе «Вагонка». Anacondaz - рэп-группа из Астрахани, завоевавшая популярность по всей стране. В 2009 году у Anacondaz вышел первый альбом под названием «Смачные Ништяки». В Москве, произошла встреча с рэпером Noize MC, состоялись совместные концерты. В 2012 вышел второй альбом «Дети и Радуга». Концерт пройдет в преддверии запланированного на зиму 2014 - выхода третьего альбома.

Мы пройдем маршрутами королевы Луизы и попытаемся ответить на вопрос, почему монаршая особа, чье правление пришлось на тяжелейший для страны период войны с Наполеоном и выплаты контрибуции, завоевала народную любовь и остается одной из самых знаменитых женщин. “The angel of peace and kindness”, “The mother of all her liegemen”, “The Queen of Hearts”, these are only a few of the rapturous statements about the most famous Queen in the history of Prussia - Louisa Augusta Wilhelmina Amelia. Paying a visit to the places in Kaliningrad region where Queen Louise used to be and live, we will try to find reasons why this monarchic person, who reigned the country in its most difficult times of the war with Napoleon and contribution payout, received the people’s love and is remembered as one of the most famous women in the history. 16 in travel September 2014

накомство с историей жизни королевы мы начнем с города Зеленоградск, где она побывала лишь однажды... 14 октября 1806 г. в сражении под Йеной и Ауэрштадтом прусская армия была разгромлена французами, а 27 октября 1806 г. в Берлин торжественно въехал Наполеон. Королевская семья была вынуждена бежать на окраину своего государства – в Восточную Пруссию. Путь королевы Луизы и ее детей пролегал через Веймар, Кенигсберг, Куршскую косу и Мемель (Клайпеда). Возле дома, в котором королева Луиза останавливалась во время своего бегства, на ул. Тургенева, 10 установлен верстовой столб «В память о королеве», где размещена информация о королеве Луизе. e will get to know with some facts about the life of Queen Louise starting with Zelenogradsk, a seaside town where she happened to be only once... On October 14, 1806, at the Battle of Jena and Auerstadt the Prussian army was defeated by the French, and on October 27 Napoleon took Berlin triumphantly. The royal family was forced to flee to the outskirts of the state - to Eastern Prussia. Queen Louise and her children had to pass through Weimar, Kenigsberg, the Curonian Spit and Memel (Klaipeda). And here in Zelenogradsk, just by the house at 10 Turgenev street, where the Queen stopped when breaking free, stands a milestone “in memory of the Queen”, bearing information about Queen Louise. The facade of the building is decorated with the bas-relief of the Prussian Queen a gift to the city from the German people. Going down Turgenev street we can see a cosy green square at the intersection of Lenin street, it is Queen Louise Square. Legend says, that the tree in the centre of the square was planted by Queen Louise’s elder son, King Friedrich Wilhelm the Fourth, when visiting Cranz in 1843. The bronze bust of Queen Louise is the most pivoted decoration in the square and was presented to Zelenogradsk by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The bust is a replica of the famous sculpture of Queen Louise (Berlin National Gallery), made by the German sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch in the XIX century. Turning right at the square and walk-

ing along Moskovsky street, we get to the Hotel “Queen Louise”. This is the only hotel that still bears its original name. The hotel was built in the 30s of the previous century. In the Soviet times the building belonged to the military authorities, and in the late 1960s it housed the hotel and restaurant “Tourist”. In the 1990s only, its former name, and, partially, its pre-war appearance were returned to the building. Moving forward we go through the city park to the beach and promenade. It is here, in the Pump room “Queen Louise”, that Zelenograd healing mineral water is pumped out. We continue our way from Zelenogradsk to Kaliningrad, the former Königsberg, where the queen lived with an interval from 1806 to 1807 and from 1808 to 1809. The temporary residence of the royal family in the capital of East Prussia was obligatory: after the French victory the King of Prussia and his family were prevented from returning to Berlin for rather a long time. The first place associated with Queen Louise is the Central Park of Culture and Rest, the former park of the estate Luizenval. The park was named so not in honor of Queen Louise, but in honor of the wife of the landowner, however, it was Queen Louise who chose the old manor house here as a summer

residence. At the entrance to the park there is a Church to commemorate Queen Louise. The cornerstone of this Lutheran church was laid on July 7, 1899. In 1901 the construction of the building, designed by Prussian architect Friedrich Heitmann was completed and on September 9 the solemn consecration took place, which was attended by Wilhelm II. The Church was built in Roman style, something not ordinary for Koenigsberg. Its north-eastern part was adorned by a cupola with a spire, which is preserved to this day, but many of the elements, such as, the seated statue of Christ, stained glass windows on the southern side, the altar, were destroyed during the fights of World War II. After a major renovation in the period of 19711976 the building became the venue of the Puppet Theatre. To the left of the entrance to the Central Park still stands the semirotunda built in memory of Queen Louise. In the very center of the semi-rotunda there is a linden tree planted by Kaiser Wilhelm I to commemorate Tilsit peace agreement. There, in the central part, previously stood the marble bust of the queen made by Rauch in 1874. renamed Komsomolskaya Street. Walking along this picturesque corner of the city, you can see historic buildings of 1900s, samples of modernity. On the way from Komsomolskaya to Victory Square, going up Mir avenue we can see a neoclassical style building with its facade decorated with a portico of six columns - it is the Regional Drama Theatre, established in the 1911-1912s by architect Walter Kukuka, and was initially known as the theater of Queen Louise. The building has been rebuilt many times throughout its long history. Going past the theater down to Victory Square, and then walking along Leninsky and Shevchenko streets, we come across another architectural monument survived to this day, also associated with the Queen Queen Louise School. It is a building of 1901, with Renaissance facade and Gothic portal entrance, and is regarded to be a typical example of architecture of Koenigsberg epoch. Thereafter, taking the way along Frunze street, we head for one of the finest examples of defensive architecture - the King’s Gate. The King’s Gate was originally called the Gumbinnen Gate, in the days of Queen Louise. It was through these gates that Prussian kings went out of town to watch army parades in the suburbs of Devau. Today’s gates were built in pseudo-Gothic style in 1843-1850. The facade is decorated

After the defeat of the Prussian army at the Battle of Jena and Auerstadt and the defeat of the Russian army at the Battle of Friedland, June 14th 1807, the three super-powers, Napoleon, Alexander I and Frederick William III met at Tilsit for peace talks. The fate of Prussia was determined as Frederick William III played a minor role in the negotiations, therefore Queen Louise left for Tilsit to have talks with the Emperor of France. However, Louise made a longlasting impression on Napoleon: “I have heard that You are the fairest of queens, but I did not know that You are the most beautiful of women”. Queen Louise Bridge is the main reminder of Tilsit Peace Treaty, built to commemorate the centennial of the agreement. The bridge is 416 meters long across the River Neman, and at present is considered to be the boundary between Russia and Lithuania. The pivotal decoration of the bridge is the Baroque style portalwith two towers, The portal was crowned with the bas-relief of Queen Louise, designed by sculptor Stephen Walter. In 1964 the basrelief was replaced by the coat-ofarms of the USSR, however, in the course of a large-scale restoration in the 2002-2003s the bas-relief of the Queen was returned to the historical site. The bridge of Queen Louise leads to Victory Square where the theater of Queen Louise, built in 1910, stands. The building has lost its historical purpose, but the external decoration has survived to the present day. The most beautiful monument of Tilsit was the marble monument to Queen Louise by sculptor Gustav Eberlyayn. The monument was opened to public on September 22,

Then, after an enjoyable walk with friends along the Fishing village wharf, we would have dinner at “Vyerf”, a place famous for its delicious meals, nice atmosphere and large tables. Back at home I am eager to see as many people as possible. I would spend the night in Svetlaghorsk, at the art - hotel “Lumiere”, it differs with its unique interior for each room and you can feel the smell of tree everywhere. Before going to bed, I would read the latest novel by Umberto Eco, and then sleep soundly to wake up very happy with the singing of the birds, open the windows and admire the dear Baltic Sea... You know, I wonder if there can be anything better to end a perfect day in Kaliningrad, I simply can’t think of any.

ny yoga practice,on its own, starting with the very first lessons in all schools of yoga, makes it possible to resolve many doubts, including those relating to the right choice of yoga instructors and schools. “Yoga” is a broad term encompassing various schools of Indian, Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese and Western origin. Before choosing a school of yoga one should learn everything about all its directions and the trainer. In the East, the process of looking for a trainer is more natural, because from the point of view of Indian culture, which is based on the concept of karma, nothing in life happens by accident. The yogi (learner), according to the doctrine of karma, “knows” his traditions not only emotionally, but also intellectually and physically, and the guru (master) is able to assess the potential and meaning of the practices the school holds for the yogi. The choice implies great importance of relationship between the guru and the yogi, not less important are the certificates and seminars conducted by the head of the school or the yogis.

2. Pleasure. Sanskrit name: Chakra Svadhishthana. Here the person starts to get pleasure from the very process. However, sooner or later the phase of rejection is possible to start.

Kaliningrad Zoo, founded by Hermann Klaass, a German businessman, is located in the site of the former Koenigsberg Zoological Garden. On May 21, 1896, the opening day, there were only 900 animals there, and there were already 2161 in 1910. The Zoo was the center of social life of Keonigsberg - exhibitions, concerts of symphonic music, restorations and ballrooms... But with the outbreak of World War I the Zoological Garden was used for military needs and soon was closed. In 1918, it was reopened, moreover, huge funds were required for reconstruction project of 1935. The townspeople decided to donate annually 50,000 German marks for a period of ten years. By the beginning of World War II the reconstruction was completed successfully. Koenigsberg Zoo had the richest animal collection ever. As a result of the assault of Koenigsberg the Zoo was destroyed, only a few animals survived - the deer, the badger, a donkey and a wounded hippopotamus, which was found in a ditch and was named Hans. Thanks to veterinarians Hans survived and became the symbol of the Kaliningrad Zoo. On June 27, 1947 the Kaliningrad Zoo was reopened to public. The

Since 1973, more than 130 structures, enclosures, dams, bridges have been built and renovated here, benches have been installed and lawns have been set up. In 1982 a children’s playground was made. Representatives from all parts of the globe have become inhabitants of the Zoo today, and also there is a magnificent dendropark. At the entrance visitors are welcomed by a relict tree - Ginkgo bilobate, as old as the dinosaurs, also you can see there a few prewar constructions thanks to which the spirit of old Koenigsberg is preserved... In the center of the park there is a fountain, the largest in the city, which was restored to commemorate the centennial of the zoo. The fountain jets rise to 18 meters. On Saturday evenings, in summer, the visitors can enjoy classical, jazz, flamenco music, popular melodies from movies...

С российской реальностью мы столкнулись сразу, в аэропорту Храброво. У нашего коллектива был объемный багаж, около 30 чемоданов личных вещей и инструментов. Оказалось довольно сложным найти помощь в аэропорту, даже платную. Мы бы справились сами, если бы нашлись тележки для багажа. Пришлось нашему русскоязычному гиду побегать в поисках грузчиков, с горем пополам их нашли. Будь мы одни - эти поиски заняли бы гораздо больше времени и сил, Только мы разобрались с погрузкой, ко мне подошел человек и потребовал предъявить паспорт. О том, что нужно этому человеку, я узнал от гида, по-английски он не говорил, не представился, не предъявил никакого документа, просто заявил, что он из миграционной службы. Зачем нужна была эта проверка я так и не понял, мы же только что прошли пограничный контроль. Когда мы уже ехали в отель, мне позвонил инженер по звуку и сообщил, что несколько инструментов было утеряно, но к счастью, багаж прибыл следующим утром. Разместили нас в Редиссон, пришли в себя, решили поужинать. В 10:35 вечера мы были в ресторане, но нам предложили карту бара и закуски, кухня была закрыта, хотя работает до 10:40. Мы пошли в Хмель, нас там отлично накормили, но готовились блюда около 50 минут. В целом, сравнивая наши гастроли здесь и в других городах России, впечатления о Калининграде положительные - публика тепло встретила наше выступление, с удовольствием приедем еще
We, together with our musicians, faced the Russian reality right at the airport Khrabrovo. We had a lot of luggage, about 30 bags of personal belongings and our musical instruments. It appeared rather difficult to find help at the airport. We could have overcome by ourselves, if there were baggage carts. Our Russian-speaking guide had to run from window to window in search of porters, it cost an arm and a leg to find them. But for the guide, the search would have taken far more time and effort, No sooner had we dealt with our luggage than a man approached me and asked me to show my passport. The guide helped me understand what he wanted, as he neither spoke English, nor introduced himself nor any document, simply announcing that he was from the migration service. I truely did not understand, what was it for, since we had just passed through the customs control. On the way to the hotel, the sound engineer called me and informed about the loss of a number of important instruments, but fortunately, the lost luggage arrived the next morning. We were checked in at the Radisson, and atfer a little rest we decided to dine. It was 10:35 pm, but the restaurant kitchen was already closed, though it should have been working till 10:40. We went to the Khmel and had a nice dinner there, of course it took them about 50 minutes to serve the dishes. On the whole, if we compare our tour with that of other cities of Russia, Kaliningrad made rather positive impressions - we were warmly welcomed, and are looking forward to visiting this city again. 2014 September in travel 47

Мне понравилось в России. Все настолько иное, культура, менталитет. Но почти никто не говорит по-английски и это очень бодрит, заставляет искать нестандартные решения. Я, честно говоря, устал от того, что все в Европе подстраиваются под англо-саксонскую культуру, не остается аутентичности.
I liked it in Russia. Everything is so different, the culture, the mentality. Almost no one speaks English and it is very encouraging, this fact makes us look for creative solutions. To tell you the truth, I am sick and tired of the fact that everyone in Europe is trying to adapt to the Anglo-Saxon culture, just a non- authentic approach.
Негативных впечатлений почти нет. Да, возникли проблемы с багажом, пришлось понервничать. Была утеряна очень дорогая гитара, выполненная на заказ под левую руку для солиста Алистера Кемпбелла. Если бы ее не доставили к саундчеку, выступление оказалось бы под угрозой срыва. Мы всю ночь звонили в аэропорт, пытались выяснить, каким рейсом доставят инструменты. К счастью, все обошлось, утром прибыл недостающий багаж и мы успели достойно подготовиться к выступлению.
I would say, we almost got away without any negative impressions. Of course, there were problems with the luggage which made us a bit nervous. A very expensive guitar was lost, it was a special order made for the left hand for the soloist Alistair Campbell. But for the soundcheck, the performance would have been a failure. We called the airport all night, trying to figure out which flight would deliver the instruments. Fortunately, the missing luggage arrived in the morning and we managed to adequately prepare everything for the performance.

У Аэрофлота ужасная еда, нет ни вегетарианской, ни веганской, ни даже глютен-фри кухни, хотя практика расширенного бортового меню уже давно распространена не только в Европе, но и в Азии. Хорошо, что в стандартный аэрофлотовский обед включен салат, им я и перебивался. Калининград я не успел рассмотреть толком, слишком мало времени, но в целом, город зеленый, люди улыбчивые, много красивых и нарядных девушек, Я с удовольствием приеду еще раз, если нас пригласят.
I am a vegan, and it sometimes makes a lot of trouble during tours outside Europe. The company of Aeroflot has terrible food, I would confess, neither vegetarian, nor vegan, nor even gluten- free dishes are available, although the practice of expanded onboard menu has long been prevalent not only in Europe but also in Asia. I was lucky that the standard Aeroflot lunch included a salad, that was the only thing I ate. I did not really manage to see around Kaliningrad, we had too little time, but on the whole, it is quite a green city, with smiling people, and a lot of beautiful girls. Looking forward to coming back!

The collection was quickly replenished with the help of residents and other zoos. Today more than 2,000 species of exotic animals and birds from around the globe can be found here, including very rare and endangered species. The zoo holds a pet shop. Verkhniy Pond (Oberteich) has an artificial origin: it was founded in 1270 when the Teutonic Knights from the castle Kenigsberg barraged the river Pregel with a dam. The new pond was used for fish farming. This pond is the second old man-made structure in Kaliningrad, preserved to this day. The banks of the Lake are decorated with statues and monuments. On the west bank in 1913, a group of four sculptures of marine animals was put up: a walrus, a seal, a sea lion and a sea dog, being the works of sculptor Hermann Thiele.
