Mehlauken Поселение Меляукен было основано в XV веке. Имя видимо от текущей вблизи речки Мелаве. В 1938 году Меляукен был переименован в Либенфельде. В 1946 году Либенфельде был вновь переименован в Залесье. The settlement Mehlauken was founded in the XV century. It must have got its name from the river Melawe flowing nearby. In 1938 Mehlauken was renamed Libenfelde. And in 1946 Libenfelde was one more time renamed Zalesye.
Залесье (Mehlauken) в немецкие годы был довольно крупным аграрно-животноводческим центром Восточной Пруссии. В городке был вокзал, больница, районный суд, три школы, небольшая мануфактура по лесопереработке, множество аптек, магазинов и гостиниц. Еженедельно проходила ярмарка. О кирхе Лютеранская кирха в поселке Залесье ( Mehlauken) была построена в 1845–1846 годах. Торжественное открытие состоялось 25 октября 1846 года. Король Восточной Пруссии Фридрих Вильгельм IV был настолько восхищен раннехристианской базиликой Сан-Клементе в Риме, что решил построить ее аналог на родной земле. Король привез и передал эскизы Людовигу Перзиусу. Но кирха была построена уже после смерти Перзиуса — его 16 in travel November 2014
In its German times Zalesye (Mehlauken) was quite a large agrolivestock center in East Prussia. The town had a train station, a hospital, a regional court, three schools, a small wood processing manufactory, a lot of pharmacies, shops and hotels. Weekly fair festivities were held here. The Lutheran church The Lutheran Church in the town of Zalesye (Mehlauken) was built in 1845-1846. Its grand opening was held on October 25, 1846. The King of East Prussia, Frederick William IV was so impressed by the early Christian Basilica of San Clemente in Rome, that decided to build its analogue in his native land. The King brought and handed the sketches of the Church to Louis Perzius, an architect. But the church was built after Perzius’ death by his successor, architect August Shtuler. It is believed that, the construction of this church in Mehlauken was some-

наследником, архитектором Августом Штюлером. Считается, что в свою очередь, строительство кирхи в Меляукане – это генеральная репетиция строительства знаменитой Фриденкирхи в Постдаме. Своды здания действительно похожи, но башня кирхи в Меляукене строже и несколько компактнее. Во время боев Великой Отечественной - кирха чудом уцелела. В послевоенные годы в ней размещался школьный спортзал. В начале 90-х в здании был проведен капитальный ремонт крыши и внутренних помещений. Постановлением правительства Калининградской области от 23 марта 2007 года № 132 кирха получила статус объекта культурного наследия регионального значения. В 2010 году кирха была передана Калининградской епархии РПЦ. К этому времени здание изрядно обветшало. Ранней весной 2012 года обрушилась крыша, затем, 21 мая в кирхе произошел пожар - сгорели деревянные перекрытия. На данный момент никаких работ по восстановлению, консервации и уборке кирхи не производится. Внутри кирхи — руины: обломки кирпичей, груда обгоревших балок, заросших травой, гулкое эхо, сломанные полы, в поисках ценностей, разрытые вандалами. Так, великое прусское наследие бесславно уходит в историю нашего региона...
what like a practical rehearsal for the construction of the famous Friedenskirche in Potsdam. The arches of the buildings are really similar, but the tower of the Mehlauken church is a bit stricter and much more compact. The church miraculously survived through the battles of the Great Patriotic War. In the postwar years it housed the school gym. In the early 90s the building was renovated, both its roof and the interior part were redecorated. According to resolution № 132 made by the Government of the Kaliningrad region on March 23, 2007, the Lutheran Church received the status of a cultural heritage of regional significance. In 2010, the church was given to the Eparchy of the Russian Orthodox Church in Kaliningrad. The building has deteriorated considerably so far. In the spring of 2012, the roof collapsed, and then, on May 21 the church was on fire - hardwood floors completely burned down. There is no sign of reconstruction, conservation or any cleaning works in the church at present. The inside part of the church lies in ruins: fragments of bricks, piles of charred beams overgrown with grass, boomy echoes, broken floors, which were dug up by vandals in search of jewelry and the like. Thus we can see that the great Prussian heritage is ignominiously fading, finding its way on the pages of history of our region ... 2014 November in travel 17

Artem Ryzhkov, writer and film critic, was born in 1973. He graduated from the philological faculty of Kaliningrad State University after Kant. Artem is the owner of the art-house “Kvartira”, the art director of the “Zarya”, the program director of the festival “Koroche” and the Film Festival of the countries of EU.

все вокруг наполнено невиданными чудесами. В этом смысле мой самый совершенный день - это самый первый. Я родился. Я огляделся по сторонам, мне стало страшно, и я наверняка закричал. Думаю, это самое искреннее, что может сделать человек в жизни. Мне только обидно, что я не помню этого дня, и с каждым новым днем удаляюсь от этого совершенства все дальше и дальше. Самое близкое к этому, что я способен испытать - это проснуться утром вместе с рассветом где-нибудь на полу, под диваном или креслом, или на берегу моря, или вообще не пойми где, и оглядеть все вокруг с неподдельным изумлением, и попытаться вспомнить, как я здесь оказался, и где это ЗДЕСЬ вообще находится. И вот тогда смотришь на этих толстых кричащих чаек, на эти бушующие волны, на этот мелкий белый песок, на перистые облака так, будто никогда в жизни их не видел, и ветер впервые забирается тебе под одежду и холодит. Но так не может продолжаться целый день, а только несколько мгновений. А потом все становится на свои места. А когда все на своих местах, то делается скучно. Мой самый совершенный день это когда я один и пишу. Когда мой телефон провалился в ад, когда люди стучат мне в дверь, но дерево моей двери принимает свойства ваты, когда автомобили за окном вымирают, когда соседи сверху одевают кошачьи лапки, чтобы передвигаться по комнатам. Когда вода в трубах превращается в пар, а комары переходят в регистр ультразвуков, которые уже не слышны человеческому уху. Мне нравится, когда на меня давит стена абсолютной тишины. Когда единственные звуки в окружающем мире - это мои звуки. Я бью пальцами по клавишам, и придумываю целый мир, слышу, как колотится сердце, течет моя неудержимая кровь, потрескивает какая-нибудь косточка в колене, падает

Well, my perfect day - it is when I›m alone and I write. When my phone is gone into the hell, when people knock on my door, but my door wood seems to be as soft and silent as wool, when the cars outside seem to have died out, when the neighbors above are in soft pussy slippers when moving from room to room. When the water in the pipes is converted into steam, and the mosquitoes are transferred in the register of ultrasounds that are not audible to the human ear. I like it to be cornered by a wall of absolute silence. When the only sounds ever heard are my own ones. MY PERFECT DAY
на пол вымершая волосинка. Мой самый совершенный день, когда вдруг в комнату влетают дети. Ева как всегда вприпрыжку, будто она мультипликационный герой, будто для нее не существует физических законов, а только законы счастья. Том со своими гигантскими ластами 42 размера, а ведь ему всего 11 лет. Они одновременно начинают со мной разговаривать, перекрикивать, задавать вопросы, смеяться, злиться друг на друга, и это продолжается примерно минуты две-три, пока они не отстроят свои голоса, тела и жесты, и все нормализуется. Но я больше всего люблю как раз эти две-три минуты, когда от меня еще ничего не требуется, просто погрузиться в этот момент, как в ванну с пеной, и так сидеть. Мой самый совершенный день - это когда мы со Снежей вдруг уезжаем на Косу. И не берем с собой детей. А просто идем по пляжу, пробираемся через сосновый лес, наблюдаем, как море взаимодействует с песком, небом и лесом и со всем что живет внутри. Мы почти не разговариваем. Боимся спугнуть рыбу, которая тыкается своей тупой мордой в берег. Только иногда говорим Смотри! И беззвучно указываем рукой в какую-нибудь сторону, а потом туда вместе какое-то время смотрим, а потом 20 in travel November 2014

Timofeev, a researcher from Leningrad, arrives to unveil the secrets of the Stone Age. Later, in 1974 Vladimir Kulakov, an archeologist from Moscow, follows him. The latter explored many monuments of the II millennium BC during his 40-year employment in the region. It’s worth mentioning that the scientist did everything for the good of his own career and never aspired to create a school of local archeology, as it used to be in Koenigsberg. Viktor Suvorov, who taught archeology at the University of Kaliningrad, organized a series of seminars and lectures devoted to the archeology of Prussia. Actually, Suvorov was trying to prevent Kulakov from getting to the University. Why? Here is what Leo Klein wrote about the great and terrible Gustav Kossina: “K. usually cared little about the logical proof of his views. He presented them as a symbol of faith. K. is quite consistent with the dilletante nature of his job and his medieval style of polemics: if there is no evidence then you have to stand for your ideas using ambiguous categoric-

ity, stunning by a shrilling phrase... In the long run, he almost suffered from loneliness among his venerable colleagues, as he had managed to offend and hurt every of them...”. What a pity that talented people can not reach an agreement. Feels like reminding of Pink Floyd in the eighties, and not only. In the early 90s there were already two museums with archaeological collections in Kaliningrad - the “Local Museum” and the new “Prussia”, the latter in the House of officers, organized by enthusiasts. In 1991 both collections were moved to the building Stadthalle. A professional archaeological exhibition and funds were formed. Зальцман, знаменитый археолог железного века Константин Скворцов (тот, что нашёл «Пруссию» на 3-м форте), заместитель директора сегодняшнего музея - Анатолий Валуев, 10 лет посвятивший исследованию прусского средневекового некрополя АльтВелау под Знаменском. На рубеже тысячелетий через археологическую практику Суворова и Скворцова на могильнике Римского времени Лаут (Б.Исаково) - прошло множество студентов, в том числе и автор этого очерка. At the turn of the millennium a great many students, including the author of this essay, have gone through the archaeological practice of Suvorov and Skvortsov on the cemetery of Roman times in Lauth (B.Isakovo). Year by year new data and unique artifacts were revealed by the research, relationship with the Polish, Lithuanian and German colleagues developed. In the 2000s Kulakov and Valuev were involved in the excavation of the basement and cellars of Königsberg Castle. In those hard times the works were often carried out on public basis and in many ways were supported by the enthusiasm of archeologists. Our tour starts at an asymmetric, expressive building of prosecutors’ office (4 Gorky st), built in the 70s. Unfortunately, the neutral ocher colour of its somewhat negates the extravagant proposition of the architect. Feeling contented with a look at it just from outside, we continue our tour along the street named after Professor Baranov right to the sculpture of “Worker with cogwheel” (sculptor Herman Brachert), where the shop “Manufactured goods” stretches in a rather picturesque way. The goods here are mainly made in China, however you can find authentic artifacts of Soviet utilitarian design as well, such as: kettles, cans, “Steel-enamel” pots (385 rubles), glassware with fruit and berry ornaments and unmatched aluminum tableware. Next, we head for the pavilion Kunhskhalle Kenigsberg (store of electronics) in search of Soviet retro: clothes, shoes, books, money, as well

Спускаемся по переулку Озерному к Нижнему озеру, здесь, у недавно отремонтированных, но по-прежнему заброшенных водных Каскадов, в окружении парковых деревьев, располагается Дом профсоюзов (Еремеев). Здание имеет черты прибалтийской архитектуры. Открытый первый этаж-павильон застеклен и используется под офисы, но в больших витринных стеклах отражаются облака. Поднимаемся по берегу пруда (ул. Сергеева – Хинтертрагхайм) до Дворца творчества детей и молодежи - зданию с чертами научнофантастической архитектуры, построенному по проекту Невежина в 1984 году. К сожалению, башни, а-ля обсерватория и круглые окна сейчас облицованы металлическими блоками. Неудачно подобран и розовый цвет. Рядом с Дворцом, с одной стороны - постамент к вертолету, разобранный лет 20 назад. С другой - смотровая площадка с мотивом круглого окна, через которое можно увидеть панораму пруда и чудовищного вида жилое здание. Терраса и пристройка - в монументальном упадке. as an excellent collection of vinyl records of the firm “Melodia” (Soviet and Bulgarian hits of 60-80s). The vinyl records cost 100-150 rubles each, the market is open from morning to 16.00, except Monday. Then we go down the Ozerny alley to Lake Nizhnee, where we can see the House of Trade Unions (Eremeyev), just by water cascades which were recently renovated, but are still abandoned, surrounded by parkland trees. The building carries features of Baltic architecture. The open pavilion on the first floor is glazed and is used for offices, whereas one can see the reflection of the clouds in the big window glass. Walking up the bank of the lake (Sergeev st. - Hintertraghaym) we get to the Palace of Children and Youth - a building with features of sci-fi architecture, designed by Nevezhin in 1984. Металлический верх образует шпиль с часами, показывающих время в главных для СССР столицах мира, а нижняя часть - карту из мелкой мозаики в духе курортной архитектуры. Часы окружены площадью с небольшими скамейками, где можно отдохнуть и вообразить несохранившийся дом Гофмана, которому и посвящен памятный камень рядом. towers, a- la Observatory and the round windows are now revetted with metal blocks. The pink colour doesn’t fit it altogether. On one side of the Palace there is a helicopter pedestal set about 20 years ago. On the other side there is an observation deck having the motive of a round window through which one can get a panoramic view of the lake and an ugly residential building on the other hand. The terrace and the outbuilding are in monumental decline. Walking over the bridge we come to a building, which now houses the STRC (Tele-radio Company) Yantar. The building was built in the late 70s in the tradition of constructivism, and has an overloaded form with an advertisment loosely hung over it, however, there are two structures of some interest nearby. The first one is a pool with fountains in the form of number eight or perhaps the infinity sign, which is completely abandoned and is used as a garbage dumpster. The second one is an eclectic object called “Time Zones”, also out of use. Its metal top has the image of a steeple with a clock that tells the time of the major capitals in the USSR, and the bottom part holds the map of fine mosaics in the spirit of resort architecture. The structure is in the center of a square which has small benches where you can have a rest and imagine the house where Hoffmann used to live, to whom the memorial stone located nearby is dedicated.

Интерьер сохранил черты советской эпохи 80-х – зеркальный холл с мраморным полом, панно, смутно напоминающее стилистику Марка Шагала, центральную лампу-дерево, залы, оббитые ярко красным и зеленым бархатом. Стилизацию а-ля Возрождение - скульптурные композиции и полотна Боттичелли, спасают лишь заросли дикого винограда. If we cross the road, we will find ourselves in the most phantasmagoric part of the city - the quintessence of the Soviet planned construction and communist optimism. Here, on top of the mountain, there used to be an ancient settlement called Tvangiste, later there stood a Teutonic castle, and in the 70s the legendary House of Soviets was built. The area, starting from Zaraisky street down to Moskovsky Avenue, is a total installation of large-scale urban planning of the USSR. This area was built and inhabited almost in five years’ time. Here we are at the Registry Office, built in the territory of a panel house and decorated with two monumental sculptural slats, incessantly reminding of a salon of ritual services. The recent restoration of the facade did not make any crucial changes in the mournful appearance of the Registry Office (due to its black, grey and gold colours). The features of the Soviet era of the 80s are preserved in its interior - mirrored foyer with marble flooring, slats, vaguely reminiscent of the style of Marc Chagall with its central lamp-tree, halls covered with bright red and green velvet. The a-la Renaissance style, that is sculptures and paintings by Botticelli, are hidden under the veil of wild grapes as a means of rescue. 2014 November in travel 31

После распада СССР кафе почти не изменилось: мебель советского периода, постсоветская кухня, салаты в красных тазах, общепитовская кухонная зона. Популярные советские закуски: бутерброд с сельдью – 17 руб., студень – 25 руб., огурец соленый – 25 руб. за 100 гр. Напротив кафе находится продмаг «Свежий вкус», где в ассортименте представлены отечественные спиртные напитки и вина бывших социалистических республик. Вино белое Шардоне («Вина Кубани») – 173 руб. Спускаемся от Универсама к Художественной галерее, расположенной в бывшем мебельном магазине, над которым - три «убитые» панельные высотки. Осматриваем выставку «Я –рисование» и поднимемся на холм около улицы Зарайской к гигантской площади перед Домом Советов. Supermarket “Moscovsky” has conveniently settled next to this place of cult of the 80s, with some brand signs on the facade resembling the Kremlin towers with stars, overlooking the district of Soviet high-rise block-of- flats. Its doors, which were said , according to legend, to have been taken down by a crowd of Soviet citizens during the opening, functionate today. The Soviet broken refrigerators are used as showcases, one can find éclairs and meringues in its cafe, opposite which is the Department of pneumatic weapons. Let’s have a snack in the Supermarket cafe to feel the inclusion of the 80s, enjoying the famous ice cream, which was served in futuristic cream saucers. After the collapse of the USSR the cafe has hardly changed whatsoever: the very furniture of the Soviet period, post-Soviet cuisine, salads in red bowels, kitchen reminding of an extension of public catering, polite staff. Popular Soviet Snacks are still available here: sandwich with herring for 17 rubles., jelly for 25 rubles., pickled cucumber for 25 rubles per 100 grams. The grocery “Fresh taste” is there, opposite the cafe, with its unique assortment of national alcoholic drinks and wines of the former socialist republics. Возведение монументального здания в духе советского брутализма началось под лозунгом «Утвердить на Королевской горе власть Советов!», но бюджет проекта сокращался, уменьшалось количество этажей. На месте Королевского замка была построена площадь с фигурными вазонами, на склоне - каскады водопадов (Мытров). В конце 80-х, когда здание было готово на 95% - строительные работы были приостановлены. Дом стал героем городских легенд, артефактом в современном искусстве, попал в книгу Фредерика Шобина «СССР - Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed», превратившись в грандиозный советский символ города. We drop in at the exhibition “I am the art of painting” and then walk up the hill going past Zaraisky street to an enormous square in front of the House of Soviets. Two roads lead to the above-mentioned building: a blown-up staircase and an unpaved road, to the right you can see an enclosure and barb wire fence. At weekends the area is rented by grocery fair, or sometimes by Travelling Luna Park in September. The design of the House of Soviets was worked out in 1969 by Shvartsbreym. The erection of the monumental building in the spirit of Soviet brutalism started with the slogan “Confirm the power of the Soviets on the Royal hill!”, nevertheless the project budget was reduced, the number of floors was cut. At the site of the Royal Castle a Square was built with curly flowerpots, and a cascade of waterfalls on the slope (Mytrov). In the late 80s, when the building was lamost ready at 95%, the construction works were cancelled. The building became the highlight of rumours and legends, somewhat like an artifact in contemporary art, it happened to appear on the pages of the book “USSR - Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed” by Frederick Shobin, taking the reputation of tremendous soviet symbol of the city. Svetlana Kolbaneva — television journalist, press attaché of the «Kaliningrad City Jazz» festival told in travel about the conception and culinary politics of the «London» gastropub. Several years ago Vladimir Katsman, the owner of the building, along with his friend and a musician Oleg Kireyev came across an interesting place called “Pizzaexpress” while walking around London. Its basement was occupied by a music club. The project was brought to life by the festival team. People go to gastropub just to chat with friends and grab a snack, We travel a lot and have included the most vibrant culinary finds in our rather short but expressive menu. Last year I went to Israel and fell in love with hummus and falafel, both healthy and delicious dishes. You can find fancy burger places all around the world. And yet, let me assure you that the food we serve has nothing to do with fast-food, because we only use fresh ingredients. We have taken fish and chips from English

Although it is very rare for a pub, we have a menu for kids, as well as a children’s room. This place is certainly iconic. Before the war, the Consulate General of USSR was located in this building, that was further taken over by the store «Дары Моря» (Seafood) and a cookery, which sold marvelous sandwiches with mackerel, fish paste and the legendary pelmeni with squid stuffing, something I am definitely nostalgic about. In order to honor our Soviet past, we have included seafood soup and typical country fish burgers into our menu. Andrey Karachinov — promoter, executive director of the festival, art-director of the «London»/«Kaliningrad City Jazz» gastropub, shared some club news with in travel. The idea of a music club was born away back. We wanted people, who visit the Jazz festival, to pay a visit to our restaurant as well, and then go to the club downstairs, where there would be an atmosphere of joy and, at the same time, homelike coziness. Here is the music policy we have in our club - we don’t only play jazz, but some other music genres which share resemblance with it, too: blues, soul, funk, reggae and even hip-hop. The club is open for everybody at the weekends, whereas during the weekdays it mostly hosts private parties. We dedicate Fridays to those who are fond of dancing, and therefore we arrange various dancing projects, which primarily are originated in Kaliningrad. Saturdays are all about live music: we invite local bands to play for our visitors, and then twice a month - bands from other parts of Russia and neighbouring countries. as well. The «London»/«Kaliningrad City Jazz» club continues the mission of the festival - good music to all tastes. Due to our creative bartenders, the cocktails in the pub are exclusive. On November 15th our club will host a concert of an American jazz singer, a dancer and an actress Victoria Horne. The repertoire of the singer consists of jazz compositions, as well as blues and gospel. Victoria Horne, dressed in stylish exotic costumes, can always turn her concert into a true theatrical performance. The upcoming concert, that is a part of Horne’s solo tour around Russia, will be accompanied by a local orchestra. And on December 6th we are hosting a contemporary jazz concert played by a Moscow group called «Live People». When selecting our guest performers, we tend to go for those bands that are unable to perform at the festival due to the need of an atmosphere of a smaller place, but still can be defined as great musicians. 2014 November in travel 37

After a concert in “California Music Bar” Psoy Karalenko told us about the strange connection between radio “Rovesniki” and the typical Soviet building and the way it is received in Kaliningrad. It’s the third time I have been in Kaliningrad. During my first visit in 2009 I had performances in the cinemahouse “Zarya” and at the “Jewish community center”. On the second time I was on a symbolic trip from Warsaw together with a colleague Dan Kahn, an American living in Berlin. There exists too conceptualized attitude towards this kind of architecture, and it surprises me, as no one is going to compare these houses with those of old Konigsberg’s. I haven’t seen the city fully, to be frank, but I cannot name it a grey city, moreover, all these Khrushchev-Brezhnevkis are painted in different colors or some graffiti is applied, and that’s it- it will give the city a European chic and relevance. Soviet architecture has some association with my childhood, with my favorite TV programs, which were really cool, such as “Radio Nanny”, “Pionerskaya Zoryka” - pure punk, and one more “Rovesniki” - a program for high school students which had a cool song as a screensaver:

These panel houses will always be associated with this song in my memories.. that is actually what I wanted to say. I’m leaving, but I’ll be back. I have planned to return together with Daniel Kahn and the punk band “Nazarov brothers”, and give a big concert reproducing the iconic heritage of Nathan Nazarov’s famous New York bard of the 20-50’s, whose only single disc was recorded in 1954. Well, we have recorded the remake and will soon release it, by the way, the Hungarians are making a movie about our tours which will also be released soon.

It must have got its name from the river Melawe flowing nearby. In 1938 Mehlauken was renamed Libenfelde. And in 1946 Libenfelde was one more time renamed Zalesye.

Actually there is only one flea market in the city - I mean a more or less real one. My friends and I call it a bum-Strasse, it’s a piece of Baranova street stretching from the “Bomba” to “The Tower of Wrangel.” At weekends, and on weekdays too, the bum-Strasse is lively with grandmas selling things of theirs left from Soviet times. Whereas men, with faces battered to varying degrees, sell everything - old records, tape recorders, bicycle wheels, rubber boots, boxes of nails, screws and iron hooks. Among them there are some who specialize exclusively in “German” items ranging from coffee pots to plates and rings, and pins and even old postcards. You can get a bargain. Торгуют с машин: старая немецкая и голландская мебель (стоит это гораздо дешевле, чем в антикварных магазинах, занимающихся недавней стариной), посуда текстиль, игрушки. В Советске блошиный рынок рядом с таможней, на берегу Немана. Работает по выходным, но, приезжать на него в хорошую погоду лучше до часу дня. Торгуют там опять же с машин, но еще выносят столы, лавки, огромные ящики – картонные и пластиковые, набитые разной мелочью – хрупкой и не очень, ставят просто на пол. But there are flea markets in Chernyakhovsk and Sovetsk. In former Insterburg the flea market is not far from the famous “Field of Miracles”. You had better visit the market by eleven in the morning at weekends. Anything can be possibly bought here right from the cars: old German and Dutch furniture (the prices are much lower than in antique shops), tableware, textiles, toys. The flea market in Sovetsk is not far from the Customs office, on the bank of the river Neman. It works at weekends, but the best time to visit it is by one o’clock p.m.. Besides the cars you can also see counters and huge boxes of cardboard or plastic, stuffed with junk of any type, sometimes even fragile, tossed on the ground. There is always hope to find a real rarity in the labyrinth of these musty piles of assorted junk if you are a truly dedicated searcher and patient enough to search and recognize something worthy, let’s say a heavy fork of silver with floral ornaments on the handle, or frosted glass stemware, in some way similar to pharmacy vessels of those times when pharmacies in Europe could not only boast of two aspirins and something for cough. You can find glasses of brandy, almost transparent, kind of resembling 2014 November in travel 43

Verkhniy Pond (Oberteich) has an artificial origin: it was founded in 1270 when the Teutonic Knights from the castle Kenigsberg barraged the river Pregel with a dam. The new pond was used for fish farming. This pond is the second old man-made structure in Kaliningrad, preserved to this day. The banks of the Lake are decorated with statues and monuments. On the west bank in 1913, a group of four sculptures of marine animals was put up: a walrus, a seal, a sea lion and a sea dog, being the works of sculptor Hermann Thiele. Here is a list of nightlife clubs, the editors of in travel find worth mentioning. It is recommended that reservations be made at popular clubs where particularly shows and special events are held. Most establishments also hold banquets, buffets and catering services. The average price per person, including VAT, for a complete dinner without beverages is indicated by the symbols: $ — up to $15, $$ — $16 to $35, $$$ — $36 to $50, $$$$ — $51 and over. The official currency at service in this establishments is no other than the ruble. In case the prices are presented in foreign currencies (e.g. USD or Euro), they are exchanged into rubles according to the rate specified by the very establishment. Tips of 10 % are included in the bill. In some places credit cards are also accepted.
