Howe students begin pen pal program with Malaysian students
Howe third-fifth grade gifted and talented students. Staff photo. Mrs. Franco’s third through fifth grade GT (gifted and talented) students have begun a pen pal program—with actual pencil and paper and not digital. Her students in the beginning didn’t understand the concept of pen pals. Franco’s parents’ best friends are from Indonesia, and they would bring colorful gifts to their family as a child. She sought out a similar area and found a teacher in Malaysia looking for a pen pal companion which made the ideal connection. At the recent school board meeting, the students gave a video presentation
was shown of the Malaysian students discovering which Howe students they would be writing back and forth with. The first batch of letters came from Malaysia with “Texas” written as the city; therefore, Mrs. Franco was nervous and continually tracking the package.
