Accidents happen. People make wrong turns. Sometimes these end badly, sometimes not. One supposed wrong Ken Bridges turn became part of an aviation legend. And with it, Texas native Douglas Corrigan became known for one of the most bizarre feats in aviation history –the transatlantic flight that went the wrong way.

Douglas Corrigan was born in Galveston in 1907, less than four years after the Wright Brothers completed their historic first flight. His father was an engineer, and the family moved often. But his home life was fractious, and his parents divorced when he was still young. Eventually, he ended up with his mother, sister, and brother in Los Angeles.

He dropped out of high school as a teenager and took odd jobs in construction. In 1925, he happened across a pilot offering plane rides for $2.50. Curious, Corrigan paid the fee, hopped into the Curtiss JN-4 Jenny, and instantly fell in love with flying. He began taking lessons, and five months later, he was a licensed pilot.

Not long after he earned his license, he began working for the Ryan Aircraft Co. in San Diego, California. He helped assemble Charles Lindbergh’s custom-built Spirit of St. Louis that would later be used for the historic first transatlantic flight in May 1927. In the meantime, Corrigan continued to perfect his own piloting skills. He eventually began performing aerial stunts in company airplanes on his lunch breaks, much to the frustration of his employers.

After the success of Lindbergh’s flight, Corrigan decided he wanted to replicate the feat on his own. He spent several years taking various jobs as an aircraft mechanic and pilot. In 1933, he bought a used Curtiss Robin OX-5 for $300. The plane was a mess, but Corrigan rebuilt it and modified it over the next several years for his flight.

In 1935, he applied for clearance to take his OX-5 across the sea from New York to Ireland non-stop. Aviation officials in New York immediately declared the plane unfit for the flight, citing a number of structural and mechanical problems. But he was cleared to fly the plane back to California. After two years of repairs and extensive modifications, Corrigan applied repeatedly, but his plane was rejected each time.

In July 1938, he flew from California to New York hoping to receive permission to finally make the flight. Somewhere during the 27-hour flight, a fuel leak developed. After he landed, he was refused again. He spent several days making repairs, and at 5 AM on July 17, he departed from New York and headed east. Along the way, the fuel started leaking into the cockpit, forcing Corrigan to punch a hole in the floor of the plane with a screwdriver to let the fuel escape safely. He arrived in Ireland 28 hours later. Bewildered Irish authorities were caught completely by surprise by his arrival. He claimed that his compass was broken and that he flew above the clouds and never realized he was flying over the ocean so he never noticed his “mistake.” He apologized profusely for the misunderstanding.

For safety reasons, all pilots must file a flight plan with federal aviation authorities before each flight. Corrigan’s flight plan stated he intended to fly back to California. In response, Corrigan’s license was suspended for two weeks, the exact time it took to ship his plane back home –by boat.

After the news broke, The New York Post ran the headline “Hail Wrong Way Corrigan” in reverse. When he arrived back in the United States, he was treated to a ticker-tape parade before a throng of well-wishers estimated by newspapers at close to a million people.

Flights across the Atlantic were not so unusual by this point. Wiley Post, himself a Texas native, had completed the same trip in 1931; and Amelia Earhart became the first woman to make the flight in 1932. Seaplanes regularly crossed the Atlantic, while Zeppelin airships, the German hydrogen-filled blimps, made routine flights across the Atlantic by the mid-1930s. “Wrong Way” Corrigan was the fourth to fly from New York to Ireland non-stop in a fixed-wing aircraft, but the circumstances with his misdirection, humility, and broken-down aircraft won the hearts of millions.

Whether the flight to Europe was planned or whether it really was an accident has been debated for many years. Corrigan nevertheless insisted throughout his entire life that the flight was an accident, at least publicly. “Honest, I meant to fly to California,” he said with a shrug.

He took the jokes and the goodnatured ribbing in stride. He published an autobiography within months of his flight titled That’s My Story and even endorsed a “Wrong-Way” novelty watch that ran backward. In 1939, he starred in a movie about his life called The Flying Irishman.

After the acclaim of his trip faded, Corrigan returned to a simple life. During World War II, Corrigan quietly served as a test pilot for the Army Air Force and delivered new planes to forward bases as part of the Air Transport Command. After the war, he worked as a commercial pilot. He stepped away from aviation as a career by 1950 and bought an orange grove in California. He married and had three children who followed his love of flight. He sold the orange grove to developers after his wife died in 1966 and settled into semi-retirement. Tragically, one of his sons, also a pilot, died in a plane crash in 1972.

Corrigan died in December 1995 in California at age 87, beloved by family and friends. The plane from his famed transatlantic flight is on display at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California.

The City Council of Howe approved an increase trash rate by 10 percent after seeing increases from outside vendors such as Greater Texoma Utility Authority (GTUA). The average household will see an increase of about $20 monthly.

Howe is wanting to start taking water from GTUA in November and once they do for three consecutive months, it will save the city close to $150,000 for the fiscal year.

The council also approved an agreement with Howe ISD to allow the Howe ISD Police Department to use the city’s court system for writing citations. Currently, the school had been using the Justice of the Peace system. The funds generated from the citations will stay with the city instead of the going to the school.

The council also approved three additional holidays that includes New Year’s Eve, Veterans Day, and Good Friday.

The council approved the Howe Community Facilities Development Corporation’s (HCFDC) budget. The HCFDC is the Type B Economic Development Corporation that’s revenue is derived from a portion of the sales tax revenue. This HCFDC is established for economic and community development funding. The city has been using these funds to cover utility costs from GTUA. The budget was approved and a motion to table was made by Councilman Brett Bearden which was approved. City Administrator Jeff Stanley then requested the authority to make $120,000 available for expenditures for the year. The request was tabled until next month’s meeting.

“This is another cushion money—just in case,” said Stanley. “You never know how far money is going to go.” The city will be applying for a $500,000 community block grant from the Texas Department of Agriculture for the purpose of fixing or replacing Young Street between Denny Street and Highway 75. The grant has a 5% matching funds requirement.

The city also received their annual audit which stated the net position for the city at the end of the 2021 fiscal year was $1,013,818 which is an increase of $7,352. The net position for the water fund was ($256,000). The water expenses exceed the revenue and the equity now is in a negative position. Howe raised rates in 2022 which may get the balance in the black.

Q: I am a principal at a private churchaffiliated school. Contrary to my graduate school training and most John Rosemond of my peers’ practice, I believe disciplinary actions should "fit the crime." As such, I do not generally issue the namby-pamby sort of consequences other principals deliver. Fear of being sent to my office goes a long way toward explaining why my school has a reputation for impeccable classroom behavior. One of our students recently spoke ill of a fellow student on social media. What, in your estimation, would be a consequence that would “fit the crime”? A: Have I got the perfect consequence for you!

But first, let me affirm your approach to discipline. “Fitting” a consequence to a “crime” is the best means of deterring repetitions of the crime in question. It is indeed unfortunate that most schools respond to disciplinary infractions with consequences that are essentially nothing more than inconveniences to the perpetrators in question. You termed them “namby-pamby,” which captures their essence inimitably.

Unfortunately, a milquetoast (another appropriate term) approach to discipline has become virtually standardized in American schools because unlike the parents of my parents’ generation, today’s are prone to (a) denying that their children are capable of dark and devious deeds and (b) rising up in protest if their supposedly immaculate progeny are threatened with punishment. That explains why a good number of principals over the years have told me that their job descriptions include the implied clause, “Keep the lawyers at bay.” A sidebar to parents who are reading this column: The idea that YOUR child is incapable of lying, stealing, bullying and other crimes considered felonies when committed by adults is absurd. There is nothing about YOU that guarantees that YOUR precious will not submit to a certain temptation when and if it presents itself. Sterling parents raise children who do not-sosterling and even downright despicable things, which is all the verification needed for the reality of free will. Another way of saying the same thing: Parenting is not deterministic. It is an influence competing with other influences that grow in number and potency as a child ages.

To the matter of social media, if someone can provide me with a persuasive justification for giving children access to a medium that allows and even encourages libelous gossip, please feel free to help me out here. As for not wanting your child to be the “only child in his group not allowed on social media,” learning to do without what “all” your peers have, and early on, is nothing but beneficial to proper character development.

As for your question, since the offending remarks were public, having the offending child apologize to the offended child in front of the entire school body is the consequence that best “fits” the crime. And yes, that will lower the offender’s esteem for himself, which is obviously in need of major lowering.
