Howe ISD Employee Spotlight Howe Intermediate School has a new principal and he’s no stranger to town. Mike Segleski entered Howe ISD back in 2017 as a varsity football coach and also served as the middle school assistant principal until this year. He’s recently moved over a few feet to a new campus and will lead the charge during the difficult times of public education’s dealings with COVID-19.

that connection and everything. So that’s something that’s hard. I’ll see them somewhere and they’ll give me a big hug and tell me they miss me and everything which makes it hard. That part’s tough to do. I’ll always miss the excitement of Friday nights.”

“I was thinking, ‘was I crazy for doing this’ but it’s going well,” said Segleski. “We’ve spent a lot of time going through proper procedures and protocols and going through “what-if” scenarios.”

Being his first year as a principal, when asked, he said he would want the teachers to remember that they are trying to build a culture. Coaches always try and build a positive culture and he wants that to be the situation at the Howe Intermediate School also.

He said since the kids have arrived in school, they are starting to figure out what to do and the teachers and administrators are also. The middle school staff misses Segleski, but they are not the only ones. The popular former coach is also missed by the high school athletes. “I’ll always miss coaching. It was a great part of my life and I’m a coach’s kid, so I grew up in it and spent the first 47 years of my life coaching,” said Segleski. “It’s been hard—driving by and seeing the guys. The comradery with the kids, I really miss because the 25 years I coached, I always had

Segleski sees himself going to a private school after retirement and being a stipend-only coach.

“I was able to work with G.A. Moore when all the state titles at Celina and it wasn’t all about our X’s and O’s,” said Segleski. “It was about the culture that he built, and I’ve tried to carry that over being a principal. I tell them all the time that I still have a coach’s mindset and I hope that get that. We’re working together through this as a team to help each other out.’ Segleski’ s wife is a teacher at Howe ISD, and they have two daughters, one of which recently graduated from Howe High last spring.
