What will the new position for Courtney Smith entail and how are you feeling about adding her to the staff?
Courtneyisfillingthe roleofDeanofInstructionthatbecameopen whenAdamWashburn leftrecently. Wewere excitedtohavesucha qualityapplicantavailable,asshehasexperienceasanassistantprincipalandtestingcoordinator. Wearealways happytobeabletohire spousesinourdistrict,as itcreatesafamilyatmosphereandanaddedlayer ofcommitment.
What was the process to get this all arranged so fast, in time for football season?
“Timewasdefinitelyof theessenceinhiring CoachSmith. With footballpracticebeginninginjustover3 weeks,weknewit wouldrequireanexpeditedprocess. OurHS Principal,AndyCellars, andIreachedouttoseveralcontactsthatwehad
torecruitqualityapplicants. Fortunately,we wereabletoidentifyseveralqualifiedcoachesand completetheinterview processwithin2weeks. It wasawhirlwind,butIfeel likewefoundtheperfect fitforourprogramand schooldistrict.”
What impact do you feel High School Football has on the Howe school district and the community as a whole?
“Weallrecognizetheimpactthathighschoolfootballhasonaschooland community,especiallyina smalltownsuchas Howe. Ihavebeeninvolvedasacoach,administrator,andparent,andI haveseenthebenefits fromeverypossibleangle. ItrulybelieveCoach Smithwillinfuseenergy, dedicationandcharacter intonotjustfootballbutall ofourathleticprograms. I’mexcitedforthe futureofBulldogathletics.”

What is a little bit of background about you?
“Iwasbornandraisedin Edmond,Oklahomaand graduatedfromDeer CreekHighSchool,home oftheAntlers.Istarted coachinginOklahomaand whenImarriedmywife, shedecidedthatwewould liketomovebacktoTexas. How is everything going sofar?
Day,onewasreallygood.Therewere alotofkids,probably70highschool boys9ththrough12thgradethat showedupandthenprettycloseto40, 7thand8thgradeboys.Daytwothere werealittlebitlessnumbersbutoverallthegroupofkidsthathaveshowed uptoworkoutswereprettyimpressive forthefirstcoupledayswithanew hireandthekidsworkedreallyhard. They’reallreallypositiveandthat’sa testamenttothecoachesthatarecurrentlyonstaff.They’vedoneaphenomenaljobbeinghighenergyand reallypositiveandallowingthosekids tobeinasituationtoworkouthard.”
What things are you planning on changing or doing for success?
“Probablythefirstthingthatweare goingtochangearethecorevalues. Whatfootballwillhavebutalsowhat IvisiontheentireAthleticDepartment atHoweISDtoembodyishaving disciplineandtoughness.Obviously, whenyou’rereallytoughmentally, physicallyandemotionallyit’sgoing toallowyoutogetthroughhardtimes. ThesekidsandHowehavebeen throughsomesituationsthatwereunforeseenthelastcoupleyearsandthe kidsbeingabletocontinuetoshowup andworkhardreallyshowsalotabout theircharacterandsothereistoughnessthere-butalsoweneedtobeable toputtheminasituationtobetougher. Thedisciplinepartdoingwhatisright,
that’sthenumberonerulethatwillbe theonlyruleintheprogramistodo whatisright-thatwasthefirstthing thatItoldthekidsonmyfirstday. TexasHistoryMinute Hewascalled “PrinceJohn,”but hewasfarfrom royalty. Hewas partoftwolosing warsbutwaspopularamonghis troops. Gen.John Magruder,aVirginia-bornConfederategeneral,tookcharge ofTexasdefensesfromlate1862onward,andledaseriesofcolorfuladventuresalongtheway.
JohnBankheadMagruderwasbornin 1807inPortRoyal,Virginia,asmall portcitynotfar fromWashington,DC. Hisfatherwas aplanterandattorney,buthefellinto bankruptcyandlosteverythingby 1820. Hebeganattending theUniversityofVirginiain1825and soonreceivedanappointmentto theUnited StatesMilitaryAcademyatWest Point.
HeenrolledatWestPointin 1826. Magruderwasanablecadet, graduatingfifteenthoutofforty-twoin hisclassin1830. Thenewlycommissionedlieutenantwasthenassignedto the7thInfantryandsoontransferred intoartillery. Itwasaquiettimeforthe army,andhewentfrompostto post. Hefoundtimetostudylawand becamealicensedattorney. In1845, hewastransferredtoGeneralZacharyTaylor’sforcesinCorpus ChristiastheUnitedStatesprepared fortheadmissionofTexasintothe UnionandtoenforceAmericanclaims ontheRioGrande. War withMexicoeruptedafewmonths later,andMagruderservedablyinthe MexicanWar,andslightlywoundedin 1847. Heservedalongsidemanyotherofficerswhowouldleadarmiesin theCivilWarsomefifteenyearslater.
Afterthewarendedin1848,he wasassignedtoapostinCalifornia wherehemanagedtoalsobecomea popularattorney,realestatespeculator, saloonowner,andalsoranarailroad whilestilltendingtohisarmyduties.
AsAbrahamLincolnassumed thepresidencyin1861,Magruderwas assignedtoapost inWashington,DC. WhenVirginiase cededinApril,MagruderchosetodefendVirginiaandjoinedtheConfederatearmyasacolonel. Givenhisextensiveknowledgeofmilitarydefenses inthearea,hewasputinchargeofthe ArmofthePeninsulaeast ofRichmond. Popularamonghis troops,itwassaidbyonefriend,“he couldfightalldayanddanceall night.” Withsuccessfuleffortsagainst Unionincursionsintothearea,Magruderwasrewardedwithpromotion tomajorgenerallaterthatsummer.
Byspring1862,Gen.George McClellanattackedtheeasternpeninsulaofVirginia. Magruder wasoutnumberednine-to-one,but managedtousethebogsandthick foreststohisadvantage. Hemanaged tofoolMcClellanintobelievingConfederateforceswerestrongerthanthey were,anddelayedtheUnionadvances forseveralcriticaldays. However,as RobertE.LeetookcommandandattemptedtoreorganizeConfederate forcesintoacounter-offensivebylate June,Magruderwasboggeddownby poorcommunicationandpoorcoordi-
nation. Hewasaccusedofbeing drunk,andfacedthechargewithout resortingtocharacterattacksagainst hiscritics. Intheend,thechargesneverstuck.
Hewastransferredtocommand theDistrictofTexas,NewMexico, andArizonainOctober1862. Bythis point,theUnionNavyhadjust seizedGalveston. Heorganizeda counterattackofartilleryandConfederategunboats. Magurderattackedon NewYear’sEve. Bythenextday,he hadcapturedthreeUnionshipsand forcedtherestto flee. GalvestonremainedinConfederatehandsfortheremainderofthewar.
MagrudermaintainedhisheadquartersinHoustonwhiledirecting officersthroughoutTexastoenforce thedraftandmaintainorder. Working withConfederateunits inLouisianaandArkansas,hemanagedtokeepUnionforcesfrominvadingTexas. AfterLeesurrendered inVirginiainApril1865,Magruder, alongwithGen.KirbySmith,triedto holdoutagainstUnionforcesbutrealizedallwaslost. OnJune2,theyformallysurrendered. Butheunderstood howleadersinthelosingsideofuprisingsandcivilwarshadbeentreated historically. Fearingforhislife,asdid manyotherConfederateofficersand officials,MagruderfledtoMexico. MagruderofferedhisservicestoEmperorMaximilian,thepuppetking installedbytheFrenchafterthey seizedcontrolofMexicoin 1862. Francehadusedthepretense ofMexico’simmenseforeigndebt owedtoFranceasapretenseforinvasionandthedistractionoftheAmericanCivilWarasacover. TheeverunpopularMaximilianfoundhimself thetargetofincreaseduprisingsin 1865andwelcomedtheservicesofa respectedgeneral.
ButMagrudersoonrealizedjust howperilouslyclosetotheabyssthat Maximilianhadbecome. TheUnited Stateshadmadeitquiteclearthat FrenchinterventioninMexicowould notbetolerated. Withunrestgrowing, theFrenchpulledtheirarmyout ofMexicoin1866andurgedtheir puppetkingtoleaveas well. Convincedhewasbelovedby thepeople,hedecidedtostayinstead. Asrebelarmiesadvancedand Maximilian’sarmiescrumbled,Magruderreadthewritingonthe wall. HefledbacktotheUnited Statesinearly1867. Notlongafterward,Maximilianwasoverthrown, captured,andexecutedbyfiring squad.
Theone-timeConfederatesoldierandMexicanadvisorfoundageneralamnestyforConfederateofficers intheUnitedStatesandcapitalizedon hiswartimeadventures. Hespentthe nextseveralyearsoff-and-onthelecturecircuitmakingatidylivingregalingaudienceswithhistales. Magruder diedathishomeinHoustonin1871.
Compromiseisthe enemyofourfaith TheChristian faithbelieves thatGod drawspeople toHimself whenthey hearthegospel“good news”messageabout howmuchHe lovesthe worldwhen HesentHis SontoshedHisbloodonthecrossas theonlysacrificethatcouldredeem thosewhobelieve.Thisiswhyevangelismisimportanttothefollowerof Christ,astheideaisthemorethegospelispresented,themorepeople mightbeconvictedandrespondtothis giftofsalvation.Afterapersonhas madetheirpublicprofessioninthe Lord,andvowstoloveandserveHim allthedaysoftheirlives,theyproceed tobebaptizedinthenameoftheFather,Son,andHolySpirittosymbolize theyhavediedtosinandarenowresurrectedintoanewcreationinChrist. Werisefromthegraveofhopelessness andbecomemembersofGod’sfamily.
TheBibledeclaresthatwewillingly surrenderourwilltodoHiswillaswe aresavedbyHisgracethroughour faith.WerespondtoHisinvitationto embraceHimastheKing,andMaster ofallweareandhopetobe.So,what happensnext?Doesthismeanthepersonisnowprotectedfromeviland shelteredfromanyattacks,deceptions, lies,ortemptations?Iwish,butthe truthisthebattlehasjuststarted.You see,whenwewerespirituallylostand blind,wedidnotcareaboutthingslike personalaccountabilitytoGod,taking upourcross,ortryingtoliveholyas Godisholy.Wedidnothavedeep sorrowwhenwesinnedorahatredfor beingdisobedient.However,whenour spiritwastransformedintoachildof Godandourmindwasrenewed,our thoughtsandbehaviorchanged. ThepassageinICorinthians6:20says, “Youwereboughtataprice.Therefore,honorGodwithyourbodies.” Weseldomhearthistheologyanymore,buttruefollowersofJesus Christhavebeenpurchasedandrescuedfromsinanditsconsequences throughthecrucifixionandresurrectionofJesus.Wearecalledtolivea lifethathonorsGod,aswearenow ownedanddirectedbyHim.Within thecontextofthischapter,thesobering messageistheunrighteouswillnot inheritthekingdomofGod.Verse19 prefacesourpassagebydiscussing howthephysicalbodyofthebeliever becomesthetempleoftheHolySpirit, whichliveswithinthemastheyno longerallowtheircarnalitytorule them,butarecompletelydevotedto loveandserveGodalone. Beingsanctifiedmeanstobeseparate fromtheworld.Sinceouridentityis nowchanged,wenolongerdwell,or desiretodothethingsweusedtodo. Soundseasy,right?Nothardly.Oneof thegreatestenemiesofthefaithis compromise.Itisadestroyerofholiness.I’vespokenwithindividualswho claimtobeborn-againfollowersof
Jesus,butwhenImentionspiritual warfare,theyadmittheydonotreally knowmuchaboutit.Sadly,siniseasilyacceptedbythereligiousmassesand toshineGod’sholylightofstrictness anddisciplineupontheirdarksecrets, causeslukewarmattitudestobecome restlessanduncomfortable.So,whatis thepsychologicalalternative?Justtalk abouthowmuchGodwantstobless usandallthegoodthingsHehas plannedforus.Don’tmentionblood, repentance,sacrifice,dying,discipline, orwar,it’stoonegative. Ourownimaginationswillalways denythetruthofhowthelevelofspiritualwarfareweareencounteringrevealshowclosewearetoGod.This cutsdeep,butifwedonotintercede dailyandarenotseekingaconstant awarenessofHispresence,weare moreenthusedaboutHisblessings thandoingHiswill.Ifwearenotaccomplishingourmission,demonswill notworryaboutus.It’swhenweare tearingdownevilstrongholdsthrough prayer,andtryingtohelpothersescape theliesofthedevil,thatallhellwill comeagainstus.Irealizeit’ssecureto enjoythecomfortsoflifeanddream aboutheaven,butwhataboutGod’s demandthatwespirituallyfight againstthedarkness?What,toopainful andviolent?Toodirty,embarrassing, anddifficult?Areweafraidthatifwe giveourselvescompletelytoGod,it willturnourlivesupsidedown?Take thetimeandreadIPeter5:8-9,IICorinthians10:3-5,andEphesians6:12, andyouwillnoticeourresponsibility ismorethanattendingchurch.
