minus 10 total yards for the worst offensive output in school history. To say the least, it was a disappointing evening for Howe Bulldogs fans which drew a rather large crowd to Callisburg despite the concerns for COVID and the 50 percent occupancy stipulation. Things looked promising to open the game when Howe unveiled their new option game when quarterback Austin Haley kept the ball for a 9-yard gain to open the season. However, that’s where the penalty flag barrage negated seemingly every positive move the Dogs would make from that point forward. Their first possession of the season ended in a Jalen Thornton punt, one of eight on the night. On Callisburg’s third offensive play of the game, Gill introduced his trick bag to his new fanbase when offensive lineman Tyler Howe became eligible and ran a reverse for a 58-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Carlos Mata, who was 6-of-7 on point after touchdown attempts, booted it through to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 9:10 remaining on the first. The Bulldogs next possession ended in a punt and on Callisburg’s Grayson Thurman hauled in a 43-yard pass from quarter-

back Jake Pollard which set up a 5-yard run by Pollard to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead. Disaster struck Howe as a bad snap that sailed over Haley’s head landed in the lap of Tyler Howe at the Dogs’ 21 yard line. It took Callisburg only one play to turn it in to points as Pollard hit Cobey Montgomery for the score to make it 21-0 with 3:44 in the first quarter. The next five possessions of the game resulted in punts for each team. Thornton booted a 51-yard bomb that landed at the one yard line of Callisburg pinning them deep. With 4:28 left in the second, Pollard stood in his endzone to punt the ball away, but the snap went through his hands and he stepped out of the back of the endzone for a safety. The score stood at 21-2. After another Thornton punt, set sail on a 3-play, 80-yard drive that was set up by a Caden Flanagan 55-yard run and capped off with a 2-yard plunge by fullback Brendon Kirk. Callisburg led 282 with 2:22 left in the second. Howe once again punted which had Callisburg airing it out for the endzone just before the half, but safety Joey Hymel picked off a Pollard pass at the goal line as the first half clock expired.
