Learn about your antiques and collectibles with Georgia Caraway

Georgia Caraway I was curious about all the different Springtime homilies and sayings. Some of them are ones we all have heard or repeated, but others were new to me. “Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder where the flowers is.” This seems to mean that the days are warmer, more rain, it has stopped snowing for most of us, the grass is green, trees are leafing, the birds are singing, wisteria,

daffodils, tulips, and crocus have come and gone and now we see iris, amaryllis, day lilies, are popping out, and everything seems to have new life. It is a time of renewed hope after a bleak, cold winter. Or another: "Spring has newly sprung / the hills are full of grass / and along comes a billy-goat / sliding on his overcoat / down the summer pass." Ogden Nash Another spring has sprung poem: Spring has sprung, the grass is ris, I wonder where the boidies is The boid is on the wing, But that’s absoid, From what I hoid, The wing is on the boid!

"With a united effort we can make the place in which we live clean, wholesome, attractive. We can make the crowded city dweller homesick to come back to us and real living. We can bring new life, new business, new beauty, to the little towns." Mame Roberts

A 1956 Canadian version: Spring has sprung The grass has riz Come out yourself And see how ‘tiz. And of course, the first verse of the following version was often recited by kids, but they didn’t usually hear the second verse until they were much older: Spring has sprung, The grass has riz, I wonder where the birdies is. Summer’s gone, Fall has fell, Winter’s here and it’s cold as H***. There was a variation in a Popeye the Sailor comic strip, circa 1936 that went : Spring has sprung, the grass is ris’, I wonder where the birdie is? There he is up in the sky, He dropped some

whitewash in my eye! I’m alright, I won’t cry, I’m just glad that cows can’t fly! Was this “ditty” ever actually used on BurmaShave signs? Yes, it was: Spring Has sprung, The grass has riz Where last year’s, Careless drivers is. -Burma-Shave I wish to all a happy Spring, Soon hoping we’ll see each other again.
