I was telling someone yesterday that I didn’t have anything super eventful for the front page – they told me Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were getting married and I could share that. My first response was a shutter. I was a nerdy, non-cheerleading athlete in High School. I can’ Taylor Swift’s music and I previously judged all women who went to her concerts.. But– then I remembered, she did have two songs I liked before she out”, in my opinion “You Belong With Me” and “Our Song”. You can even find those songs on iTunes anymore, I guess they didn make any profit for her anymore. They were solid lyrics though– not my favorite sound, but good lyrics anyway. Maybe music is like church denominations. Not everyone has the same vibe or opinions– but if we could get over the judgement, and take time to hear each other's songs maybe we would find that we are all right about some things, and maybe wrong in others– but how will we know if we don’t sit around together and “jam” to eachother’ s favorite songs? Will you also invite your non-Christian music listening friends to the jam sesh to share their music? I sure would!

TexasHistoryMinute Texashasbeen hometomanyimaginativescientists, artists,andwriters. Becauseof theirdreamsand determination,they changedhowpeoplesawtheworld.OneTexaswriterin particular,GeneRoddenberry,created oneofthemostsuccessfulsciencefictionstoriestoday,StarTrek. BornEugeneWesleyRoddenberryinElPasoin1921,he wastheeldestchildinaSouthernBaptistfamily. In1923,hisfatheraccepted apositionattheLosAngelesPolice Department,andthefamily leftTexasforCalifornia.
Asachild,Roddenberrywas veryimaginative. Helovedreading sciencefictionandhadfairgradesin school. Heconsideredfollowinginhis father’sfootstepsandbegantaking criminaljusticecourseswhenhelater enrolledatLosAngelesCityCollege. However,theapproachofWorldWarIIshiftedhisfocus.
Increasinglyinterestinginaviation,hebegantakingflightlessons throughthemilitary’sCivilianPilot TrainingProgram. Heearnedhispilots licenseandenlistedintheArmyAir CorpslessthantwoweeksafterPearl Harbor. HebecameaB-17bomber pilotwiththeThirteenthAirForce, basedoutofHawaii. HeearnedaDistinguishedFlyingCrossandrosetothe rankofcaptain.
Afterthe war,RoddenberryworkedforPanAm Airwaysasaninternationalpilot. In 1947,hisLockheedL-049crashed inSyria. Hesufferedtwobrokenribsin thecrash. Astheplanecaughtfire,he workedtopullasmanyinjuredpassengersfromthewreckageashe could. Fifteenpassengersdied,buthe savedmanyothers,andledthesurvivorsthroughthedeserttofindhelp. He flewforPanAmforanotheryearbeforeresigningtopursuehisdreamsof beingawriter.
Successdidnotcomeeasily. Havingdifficultyearningalivingto supporthiswifeandyoungchildren,he joinedtheLAPDin1949. Usinghis policeexperience,hesoonbecamea technicaladvisorfortheearlydramaMr.DistrictAttorney,forwhichhe alsowrotetheoccasionalepisode. He laterworkedasawriterforHighway Patrol. Hewasalsosellingscriptsfor popularwesternsaswell. Hewasdoingsowellthatheresignedfromthe policeforcein1956.
In1958,hestartedwritingforthe popularwesternsBatMastersonandHaveGun–WillTravel. He wonanawardfromtheWriter’sGuild ofAmericaforanepisodeofthelatter thatyear. Roddenberrytriedtodevelop severaldifferenttelevisionseries,buthe haddifficultysellinganytothenetworks. In1963,NBCpickeduphis seriesTheLieutenant,adramaabout thelivesofMarinesstarringGary LockwoodandRobertVaughanthat ranforonlyoneseason.
Roddenberrybegandeveloping anewsciencefictionseriesin1964that ultimatelybecameStarTrek. Networks werehesitant,butRoddenberrypitched itasafuturisticwesternbasedonastarship. CBSrejectedtheseriesoutright, butNBCwasinterested. Thepilotepisodethatemerged,TheMenagerie,
starringJeffHunterasCaptainPike, LeonardNimoyasMr.Spock, andRoddenberry’sfuturewife,Majel Barrett,didnotimpressthenetwork. Executivesfearedthethemeof aliens,ESP,andaninterracialcrew wouldnotsitwellwithaudiences. However,theyenjoyedtheconceptof theprogramandordereditrevamped. Roddenberrycomplied,keepingNimoyandbringinginWilliamShatnerto playCaptainJamesT.Kirk. Thesecondpilotairedin1966,andtheprogramimmediatelydevelopedasteady followingoffans. Roddenberrykept theshowfocusedonmoralityplaysand allegoriesofthecurrenteventsofthe 1960s. Overall,hebasedtheserieson hisideaofautopianfutureforhumanity,onewherewar,poverty,crime,and diseasehadendedandallracesworked togetherasequals. Thishopefulview ofthefutureattractedmanyfanslookingforanescapefromthechaoticand violenteventsofthedecade. However, ratingswerelow; andRoddenberryoftenclashedwith networkexecutives. Theserieswas nearlycancelledin1968,butaletterwritingcampaignallowedStarTrekto proceedtoathirdseason. Aftertheserieswascancelledin 1969,Roddenberry’spersonallifewas amess. Hismarriagehadfallenapart, andhehadseveralaffairs. Heultimatelydivorcedandremarried. Hetriedto developseveralothersciencefiction seriesandmoviesbutnonewasever particularlysuccessful.
StarTrek’spopularitycontinuedto growafteritscancellation. In1976, NASAinvitedthecasttotheunveiling ofthespaceshuttleprototype, calledEnterpriseastheresultofawritingcampaign. Bythelate1970s,he entereddiscussionstoreviveStarTrek asatelevisionseries,buttheunexpectedsuccessofStarWarsin1977led studioexecutivestopushforamovie versioninstead.
TheStarTrekmoviepremiered in1979. Threemoremoviesfollowed inthe1980s,leadingtoanupdatedversionoftheserieswithanewcast,Star Trek:TheNextGeneration,in 1987. Severalmoreserieswould emergeinthefollowingdecades. Hediedofaheartattackathisdoctor’s officeinLosAngelesin1991. Asa finalsalutetothesciencefictionpioneer,aportionofhisasheswereflown aboardaflightoftheSpaceShuttleColumbiain1992. Thoughmanyof hisotherworkshavebeenlargelyforgotten,StarTrekhasbecomeabilliondollarfranchisefromTVshows,merchandising,andmovies.
Therapturequestionis notif,butwhen? Whendiscussingtherapture happening beforethesecondcomingof Christ,IandII Thessalonians arefamiliar lettersthatfind theirwayinto theconversation.Theword “rapture”itself isnotinthe EnglishBible,however,itcomesfrom theLatinVulgate’stranslationofthe Greekverb“harpazô”foundin1 Thessalonians4:17,andcommonly taughtasatimewhenGodwillsecretlyrescuesHispeoplefromthegreat tribulation.IIThessalonianschapter2 beginswithanencouragementtonot beupsetthatthedayoftheLordisat hand,however,inthisevent,everyeye willseeHimandknowthatHeis God.
Whenthesebookswerewritten,the newfollowersofJesuswereexpecting HimtoreturninHisdivineauthorityto conquerRome,andestablishHiskingdomforever.TheyacceptedtheDayof theLordwaswhenthetrumpetwould sound,andChristwouldappearona whitehorsewiththearmiesofheaven followingHimtoestablishHiskingdom.ButwenoticethatPauldoesnot mentionarescuebeforethisevent.If thewriterbelievedChristianswould beremovedfromtheearthyearsbeforetheDayoftheLord,surelythis eventwouldhavebeenmentioned. WithintheentirebooksofIandII Thessalonians,whereisapreormid tribulationrapture?Thecontextof bothbooksisgenerallyaboutbelievers livinginawaythatispleasingtoGod andmakingsuretheyarereadyforHis gloriouscoming.Thisisnottosay thereisnosuchthingasthesaintsbeingtransporteduptomeetHim,but onlytheonecomingismentioned.I Thessalonians4:16-18isaclearexplanationofwhenallsaintslivingand deadwillbecaughtup.“FortheLord himselfwillcomedownfromheaven, withaloudcommand,withthevoice ofthearchangelandwiththetrumpet callofGod,andthedeadinChristwill risefirst.Afterthat,thelivingwillbe caughtuptogetherwiththeminthe cloudstomeettheLordintheair.And sowewillforeverbewiththeLord. Thereforeencourageoneanotherwith thesewords.”UnlikewhenJesuswas born,hisreturnwillbeauniversally witnessedoccurrenceestablishingdivineauthorityandjudgment.“Foras thelightningcomesoutoftheeastand shinestothewest:soshallalsothe comingoftheSonofmanbe”Matthew24:27.
InIThessalonianschapter5,Paulcontinuesthenarrativeabouttheend times,andremindsushowthedayof theLordwillcomelikeathiefinthe night.Thisisananalogydescribing thatwemustbeconstantlyfocusedon Jesus,tobesober,andnotdistracted, asdifficulttimesarecomingforall trueChristians.Thisincludespraying withoutceasing,wearingthewhole armorofGod.Matthewchapterchapter24alsoremindsustowarnevery-
oneaboutintensepersecution.The writermentionsinverse12abouthow sinwillincreaseandtheloveofmany willwaxcold.FormanytheenthusiasmofwalkingwithGodwillfade, andbereplacedwithlukewarmreligiousattitudesandcarnality.Wecan definitelyseeitnow.Verse14says whenthegospelispreachedinallthe nations,theendwillcome.Isthisnot happeningtoday?Verse15beginsthe descriptionoftheantiChrist,andcontinueswarningthesaintstopreparefor thegreattribulation.
Verse29saysthatimmediatelyafter thetribulation,thesunandmoonwill becomedark,andthestarswillfall fromheaven,andthepowersofthe heavenwillbeshaken.Thenallthe earthwillseetheSonofmancoming inthecloudswithinfiniteauthorityand glory.Verse31,“AndGodshallsend Hisangelswithagreatsoundofa trumpet,andtheyshallgathertogether Hiselectfromthefourwinds,from oneendofheaventotheother.”The nextverseJesustalksabouthowwe knowsummerisnearwhenafigtree developsleaves,andinthesameway whenweseethespecificsigns,wecan discerntheendisnear.ICorinthians chapter15,andverses51-52,islisted asanotherexampleofasecretrapture, butagainwithinthecontextofthe chapterthisistalkingaboutthesecond comingorDayoftheLord.Theis questionnotabouttherealityofaressurectionandacatchingawayof saints,butwhenonthetimetableitwill happen.
