I was reflecting this week as I was putting the paper together how The Howe Enterprise truly is what you as a community make it.
I took this newspaper on, not just because I liked the town but primarily because I believe with my whole heart in “free journalism”. I loved the concept of freedom of speech in this country and wanted to be a part of that when I began to pursue being educated as a journalist. I soon found out “freedom of speech” is a loose term. Journalists aren ’t openly killed in our country but I wouldn ’t say generally the media has freedom in its expression– It’s owned and muzzled by it’s handlers to be swayed as they desire.Actual, straight forward truth without sway became a forgotten concept. I hated that, so I left the profession planning never to return, until this opportunity came around. We are a small town that is getting bigger everyday and there will be increased news as time goes on. From a practical standpoint, what gets reported is influenced by what I actually hear about going on around town and I cannot be everywhere at once– I need community members’help.
I carefully try to consider the direction I want to take the paper with my strong opinions vs. what I consider to be true journalism, which strives to be unbiased. Even only reporting certain events as opposed to others in a town (or country) can be biased. That is where the community comes in– if you want more variety of things discussed and reported on– email me, even general opinions are welcome, we have an opinion section for a reason!
