I am going to use my column space this week to shamelessly plug something I am passionate about. Every first Friday of the month at 6 a.m. at Community Bible Fellowship we have started a time set aside for prayer for our community, leadership, country, etc. All citizens are invited to come and pray regardless of if you attend church, or which you choose to attend–we only ask that you are a Christian, as that is the only God we are praying to. TheMayorBragmomentincludedrecognizing5individuals.Officer JustinLike,whoinitiated astoplastFridaythat resultedinastruggleof thecitizenresistingarrest.Alocalcitizen,who chosenottoberecognized,stoppedtohelpthe
officer.UponChiefSullivan’sarrival,thecitizen resistingarrestwastased. Thecitizenresistingarresthadgivenafalse name,andwasfighting duetohisbeliefhewas indangerofbeingarrestedforasasuspectina ShermanFentanylhomicide.“Thisisapainful reminderofthedangers ofpoliceworkandour
smallcommunityisnot exemptfromthesetypes ofpeopletraveling,visitingandcommitting crimesinHowe.This eventcouldhavehadanotherendingifitwerenot forthecitizenwho stoppedtohelptheofficer inneed.”,ChiefJakeSullivan.MichelleHewitt wasalsonominatedfor

HowePoliceDepartmentHasaNewEmployee Chief Jake Sullivan
In October 2024, Chief Sullivan decided not to fill the position and use fundstoupdatethedepartment’stechnology. Overthepast year, alladministrative duties fell to Chef Sullivan and Lieutenant Sparks, which was a challenge. On September 8, 2025, Police Administrative Assistant Kira Melton joined the Howe Police Department. Kira is a criminal justice student with ambitions to become a crime evidence tech, which Howe Police Department will need in the future. Kira is a great asset to the Howe Police Department and is a Howeresident.Asshecontinuesearning her college degree, while gaining experience in the criminal justice profession. Sheisactiveasamotorcross
riderandenjoysbeingoutdoors. Kira,hadtocompletethesamehiring process as our police officers, such as a psychological, in-depth background, being fingerprinted and completing the same Personal History Statement as required by our police officers. Howe Police Department has lofty standards, so our citizens know we hirequalitypersonnelandnotjustfilla positionwithabody.

Maryisvery knowledgeableofthebeginning,the growthandhistory,themanydisplays, andthefutureplansfortheMuseum. She'shelpedintheMuseumin everywaypossiblefrommovingdisplaystowelcominggueststoacceptingdonationsforit. Sheenjoysdoing anythingshecan,includingtraining volunteerstohelpattheMuseum. Sheencouragedanyonewhoso desirestocomeservewithherandher otherhelpers. Shealsoencouragedus tocomevisitasagroup,whichall agreedthatwe'dliketodothat
soon. Welookforwardtobeing shownaroundandtoidentifywith someofthedisplays. Allwareras areincludedinthedisplays,and somelocalpeoplearecreditedand associatedwithsomeoftheartifacts. Maryknowswhatshe'stalkingaboutandcouldtellaboutthe airplanemodelSR-71she'sholding inthepictureaswellasP-51which wasamodelonthetable. Speed, length,weight,whereused,when retired-shelovestalkingabout planes. Allthatshesharedwasinterestingand,insomeway,relatable.

SpringBulbs:Alsocalledhardybulbs,thesebulbsareplantedinthefallspendwinterintheground,andflowerinspring. Someofthemorecommonspringbulbsare tulips,irises,daffodils,hyacinth,allium,andcrocus. Thesebulbsneedseveralweeksofcoldtemperaturestobreaktheirdormancyandflowertotheirfullpotential. TexasHistoryMinute PatGarrettisanotherofthelegendaryfiguresofthe OldWest. Healwayshadatastefor adventureandhad acareerasadistinguishedlawofficer inatimewhenlittlelawandorderwas tobefound. WhereverGarrettwent, troublealwaysseemedtofollow.
PatrickFloydJarvisGarrettwasborn inAlabamain1850toafarmingfamily. In1853,theymovedtonorthernLouisianawhenhisfatherboughta plantationthere. However,everything fellapartaftertheCivilWar. Hisfather wentbankrupt,hismotherdiedin1867, andhisfatherdiedthefollowing year. Barely18andwithnothingleftto holdhimback,GarrettrodewestintoTexas.
Forthenextseveral years,Garrettmadeamodestlivingasa buffalohunterinTexasbeforefinding workonaranchinLincolnCountyin thecenteroftheNewMexicoTerritory. Heeventuallycameto ownalocalranchofhisown.
However,tensionsbetweenrivalranchingfactionsexplodedintothenotorious LincolnCountyWarin1878. Aseries ofgunfightsacrossthearealeftperhaps twodozendead. Thechaos thrustGarrettoutoftheshadowsand intothemiddleofthebloodshed. By1880,residentsenragedoverthe continuingviolencepushedSheriff GeorgeKimballoutofofficeinfavor ofGarrettbyanearlytwo-to-onemargin. Thechaoscontinued asGarrettandhispossecapturedWilliamBonney,morefamouslyknownas gunmanBillytheKid,inDecember afterashootoutatStinking Springs. Fourmonthslater,Billythe Kidescapedjustafterhisconvictionfor murder. Garrettwouldencounterhim againinJuly1881,apparentlykilling himinanighttimeshootout. However, questionsoverthedetailspersistedwith somesuggestingthatBillytheKidescapedandneverdiedatall. Garrett, however,killedseveralmeningunfightsthroughouthislifeincludinghis yearsasalawman.
Nevertheless,thisincidentended theLincolnCountyWaronceandfor all. Garrettbecameknownacrossthe countryforhisrole. However,he steppeddownfromhispositionassheriffin1882andreturned toTexas. WhileBillytheKidgrewinto folkherostatus,Garrettattemptedto publicizehisownversionofevents withhisbookTheAuthenticLifeof Billy,TheKid,whichbecameoneof themostfamousaccountsoftheoutlaw’slifeanddeath.
Garrettcontinuedhiscareerin lawenforcement. In1884,Garrettwas madeaTexasRangerbutresignedhis appointmentayearlater. Heattempted anirrigationbusinessinWestTexas, whichfailedmiserably. By1892,he settledinUvaldeontheRioGrandeto resumeranching.
In1896,hewasappointedsheriff ofDonaAnaCountyinNewMexicoafteraprominentcitizenandhisson disappearedinthedesert. Garrettpinpointedfourmenfor murder,andheandhisdeputieskilled twoofthesuspectsinablazeofgunfire in1898. Theremainingtwosurrenderedseveralmonthslater.
In1901,PresidentTheodoreRoosevelt appointedGarrettastheUScustoms
collectorforElPaso. However,aftera fistfightwithoneemployeeandanumberofpoliticalmissteps,hewasreplacedby1906.
Garrett,however,hadmassive debtsbythistimeandlosthisUvalde ranch. Heandhissonattemptedto leasearanchinNewMexico,buta disputeeruptedwiththeowner,Jesse Brazel,andhispartnersaboutthe terms. InMarch1908,Garrettrodeout tomeetwithBrazeltodiscussthematterfurtherwhenhewasshot dead. Brazelconfessedtotheshooting butwasacquittedofmurder. IntheyearsafterGarrett’sdeath,his characterappearedinmanynovelsand movies,includingthefirstBillytheKid moviein1925. Controversyanddebate surroundingthelifeofGarrettonly grewafterhisdeath. Asmallmemorial markingthespotofhisdeathnearwhat isnowUS70wasplacedbyhissonin the1930s.

Onthesubjectofbeingattacked,I’m shakenandangryabouttheyoung politicalactivistCharlieKirk,whowas assassinatedlastweek.Itdoesnotmatterifyouagreedwithanythinghesaid ornot,everypersoninthiscountryhas thelegalrighttoexpresstheirthoughts andconvictionswithoutthefearof beingmurdered.Hewaschallenging anyonetodiscussanddebatetheissues thataredividingournation,andwantedtohearwhatpeoplebelieve,and challengedthemtoprovetheirideas. Freedomofspeechistheheartofour democracy,asmillionsofbravesoldiersinthelast250yearssacrificed theirlivessothatwecanenjoythis Godgivenright.Fearistheoppositeof faith,andeventhoughweareexterminatedforpubliclyvoicingouropinions,wewillnotbesilenced. Somearecryingouttoremoveall gunsfromeveryperson,butnogun lawwouldhavesavedthisman.We realizethatguns,knives,crossbows, clubs,spears,orswords,bythemselves donotcausedestruction,it’stheintentionsofhumanswhousethemas weaponstokill.Sadly,schoolshootingsarebecomingmorecommon,but therealproblemisspiritualblindness, andmentalillness.It’sheartbreaking. Whywouldanyhumanbeingwantto murderachild?Becausetheyaresufferingfrompsychosisandorpossessedwithevil.Inourtalkslately abouttheriseindemonicactivityand fascinationforhorror,anddeath,we knowthatSatanisdesensitizingthe culturebyglamorizinghatredanddestructionasentertainment.Asmore individualsbecomeobsessedwithlies anddestructiveinfluences,wewill onlyseeariseinhorrendousactsof violence.
Wedevelopandexerciseourviews throughourfreewill–withoutmurderingthoseweoppose.Aswelook
backthroughworldhistory,when someonedisagreedwiththemessenger,theyoftenkilledthem.Remember thishappenedtoJesus,asHisbrutal executionhadeverythingtodowith Hisconvictingwords.Cowardsare afraidtocalmlydiscussissuesbecause oftheirownlackofintelligence,and willoccasionallyresorttothedevious actsofsilencingthosetheycannotdebate.It’stheeasywaytoeliminatean individualwhothreatenstoexpose thembychallengingtheirweakopinionswithcommonsense.Satanhates God’sgiftofenlightenment,holywisdom,andunderstanding,becausehe knowsitisdivinetruthinlovethatcan setthecaptivesfree.Thestrategyofthe darkkingdomistodeceivethemasses andturntheworldintoastateofchaos andfalsehoodforthepurposeofstealingsouls.
Weareoutragedandrealizethisiswar. MaywedemonstrateourtrustinGod, andaccomplishthemissionthatChrist hascalledustodo.Thesleepinggiant isawakening,andweprayGod’swarriorswillbeinspiredtoriseandstand againstevil.Ifwedecidetogivea speechfromourlocalcourthouselawn tomorrow,weareliterallyatriskof beingkilled.TheenemywantsGod’s childrentohideandliveinfearofpersecution whatareyougoingtodo?
