This week in the column section “REF SEZ” is back for another round! I always crack up reading that column when it is submitted but this week instead of sharing a funny story it is a heartwarming one, highlighting the role coaches can play in athletes’lives.
I greatly appreciate each of our columnists who contribute to the paper. The columns seem to add a “fun” element in my opinion and I truly enjoy hearing what each of you are interested in. If you have a topic you would like to write a column about send me an email, it can be as often or sparse as you would like to contribute– even “ one-time” contributions are acceptable. I love to hear and read things others are passionate about and the feedback I get from the community about the columns reflects they enjoy it, as well.

ThisMonday,theCity Councilconducteda SpecialMeetingprimarilytodiscussandapproveexcitingchanges attheHoweFireDepartment.Duetoreduced coveragelastweekof theregularlyscheduled CouncilMeetingwewill coverthemeetingsin chronologicalorder,beginningwiththeoverviewoflastweek’s meeting,first.
DepartmentalReports weregivenbyallCity Departments.
ChiefSullivanofthe PoliceDepartmentreporteda30percentincreaseincallvolumein August.Reportsforcitations,warningsandcalls forserviceincluded175 citations,97warnings and179callsforservice. Sullivanstatedthatisa “drasticincreasefrom whatthisdepartmenthas donefromayearago, partofthatiswehave steppedupourtraffic enforcementonHighway75afterseeinga drasticincreaseinaccidentsduetoconstruction.”SullivanalsoremindedtheCouncilof theupcomingNational NightOuthostedbythe PoliceDepartment, moreinformationcanbe foundonPage7ofthis publicationregarding thatevent.
ChiefManietoftheFire/ EMSDepartmentreported76callsforservice.TheDepartment hasbeenundergoing trainingandcertification classesforallfull-time stafftobecompletely cross-trainedinbothFire andEMS.Certification classesarebeingcompletedmonthlybymembersofthedepartment.
MichelleHewitt,the CitySecretaryreported thattheCitycollected $32,928.30forcitations lastmonth.Herfocus nowfortheupcoming monthistocompletethe fiscalyear2022-2023
audit.
PublicWorkswasreportedbyJustinJohnson, PublicWorksDirector. PublicWorkscarriedout 192serviceorders,16 metersetsfornew homes,4meterleaks repaired,35tonsusedon potholepatching,and 141hoursonwellssamplingandreportingwater analysis.Johnsonreportedthatamanufacturing representativeforthe wells’systemscameand analyzedthewellsfor aboutaweekbuttheissuescontinuedshortly aftertheyleft.Thereisa malfunctioninthereadingsofchemicalsinthe waterbytheautomated system-leadingJerry Davis,ofPublicWorks, tocomeoutandmanuallycheckandadjusteach wellmultipletimesper daytoensurecitizens haveproperlytreated water.
MonteWalker,CityAdministratoralsoreported onthewatersituation. Walkerexplainedthatthe mixingofthesurface waterfromLakeLavon withthewellwaterrequirestwodifferenttreat-
ments.Chlorinealone wasusedtotreatthewell water,butnowammonia hasbeenaddedtothe chlorine.Walker,ina statementwrittenbyJerryDavis,explainedthat ammoniaisbeingadded tothewatertoreducethe amountofchlorineneededtodisinfectthewater, leadingtolessharmful byproductsleftoverin thewaterfromthechlorine.Withthisnewprocess,automatedequipmenthasbeeninstalled toconstantlymeasure andmaintainappropriate
levelsofeachchemicalin thewater.However,due totherecentmalfunction oftheequipment,itis currentlybeingmanually monitoredcloselyandthe chemicalsarebeingadjustedcarefully.“Iwould lovetobragonJustinand Jerryandhiscrewbecausetheyareabsolutely remarkableatwhatthey do.Theycatchalotof griefonsocialmediabut thoseguysbattleanddo absolutelythebestthey can-theyarejustfighting somemechanicaland computerissuesthatthey
don’thavecontrolover buttheyaretryingto workthroughit,even manually.Iamvery proudofthem.”,Walker said.
Walkerreportedonupdatesforeachdevelopmentintheareaand updatedthatcurbshave beenremovedonSwannerDrive.TheCityhas plansinthestreetbudget totrytocorrectsomeof theSwannerDriveissuesplus“anumberof others”.Walkerstated,if (Continued on Page 6)

Iguessoneofmymostheart-warming experiencesinvolvingacoachwas manyyearsagowithacoachthatIhad workedforonmanyoccasions.He wasaprettyintenseguywhenhe neededtobebutalsohadasenseof humorwhenhecouldaffordtoletitbe known.
Onthisparticularlyswelteringgame night,hisseniorsweretoberecognizedpriortothestartofthecontest one-by-oneandescortedbyfamilyto thesidelinefrommid-field.
Now,inthismodernageofhigh schoolfootball,althoughacoin-tossis actedoutpriortothekick-off the actualcointossiscarriedoutbythe coachesandofficialsonthefieldatthe endofthepre-gamewarm-ups.Thisis trueonabout90%ofallcointosses thesedays.
Inthiscontest,bothcoacheshad agreedtodothetossinthesouthend zonebeforereturningtotheirrespectivelockerroomsbeforethegame.
Ihadcorralledthevisitingcoachinthe endzonebutthehometeamcoach couldnotbefoundtodothetossaswe hadagreeduponearlier.Isentsomeof theofficialsandacoupleofassistant
coachesinsearchofhimtonoavail.
Finally,anassistantcoachcameover tomeandthevisitingcoachandexplainedthatseveraloftheseniorshad nofamilymemberstoescortthem duringtheirSeniorIntroductiononthe fieldsotheheadcoachandsomeof hisstaffwereescortingthekidsthemselvessotheywouldhavesomeone ontheirSeniornightwiththem.
Itbrokemyheartthinkingofthose kidswithnofamilymemberspresent, butitalsogavemegreatjoythatthese adultsdidtherightthingforthesekids inabigmomentintheirlives.
ManytimessincethatnightIhave allowedmymemoryandemotions harkenbacktothatnightandrememberinghowmuchcoaches,teachers andadministratorsthathavetheir heartsintherightplacegiveofthemselvestotheirkidsthattheyarein chargeof.
Soinclosing,rememberthatthose folkshaveyourkidsbestinterestat heartandmightneedahandshakeora back-slapeveryonceinawhile.

Sodothe Doves!Adownsideisthefactthatthe hullsareallelopathic;theymayinhibit plantgrowthinareaswheretheyaccumulate,soyoumightwatchoutfor thisinplacingyourfeeder. Ifexpense isnoproblem,youcanpurchasesunflowerhearts,butthecostisconsiderablymore.
WhentheGoldfincharrivelaterthis Fall,youmightwanttoadda Niger thistletubeorsockfeeder,although theywillgoforthesunflowerseed also.It’sfuntowatch twoorthreeof themclingingtothesidesofthesock, munchingawayonthetinythistle seedtheycanreachthroughthemesh.

TexasHistoryMinute AmericanHistoryisfilledwithstories ofmenandwomenwhosteppedinat therighttime. U.S.Rep. WrightPatmanwasonesuchfigure. HerepresentedTexasinCongress throughsomeofthemostdifficulttimes thenationhadfaced. Throughhiswork inCongress,Patmanleftanindelible markonEastTexasandthenation.
JohnWilliam WrightPatmanwasbornoutside HughesSpringsinCassCountyin 1893. Aftergraduatinghighschool,he enrolled atCumberlandUniversityinTennessee By1916,hehadearnedalawdegree andacceptedajobasassistantcounty attorneyforCassCounty. When theUnitedStatesenteredWorldWarI in1917,heenlistedinthearmy. In1920,hewaselectedtothefirstof twotermsinthestatelegislaturebefore becomingthedistrictattorney forNortheastTexas. In 1928,PatmanchallengedU. S.Rep.EugeneBlackofClarksvillefor hisseatinCongress. PatmanoverpoweredhimintheDemocraticPrimary,assuringhisvictoryin thegeneralelection.
Notlongafterhiselection,the GreatDepressionstruck. In1932,a growingnumberofunemployedveterans,desperateforanymoneytosupport theirfamilies,begandemandingthe immediatepaymentofaspecialmonetarybonusthatCongresshadenacted forveteransin1920. However,the savingsbondwouldnotmatureuntil 1945. Patman,insupportofhisfellow veterans,pushedabillthatwouldhave lettheseveteranscashintheirbonuses early. Evenastheseunemployedveteransandtheirfamiliesgathered inWashington,DC,tolobbyCongress, PresidentHerbertHooverrefusedto supportthePatmanBill,andCongress rejectedit.
AftertheinaugurationofPresidentFranklinD.Rooseveltin 1933,PatmanwasanoutspokensupporterofhisNewDealreformsdesignedtocombatthedepressionand reformtheshatteredeconomy. Patmanpushedfederaljobsprograms,SocialSecurity,theminimumwage,and the40-hourworkweek. In1936,his bonusbillforWorldWarIveterans finallypassed. HealsopassedtheFederalAnti-PriceDiscriminationAct(also calledthePatman-RobinsonAct) whichpreventedretailstoresfrom formingmonopoliesbyunderselling localmom-and-popstores.
HeremainedanactivelegislatorintheyearsafterWorldWarII. To helptheeconomyreturntopeacetime activity,hepushedtheFullEmploymentActof1946aswellasfourhousingactsbetween1946and1965that helpedtheaverageAmericanafforda goodhome. ThroughtheBritishLoan Act,hespurredthenationtobailoutthe Britishgovernment,bankruptedby WorldWarIIandfacingnewthreatsas theColdWarloomed. Aspartofthe FloodControlAct,heinitiatedthe1948 constructionofwhatbecameLakeTexarkanainBowieand Casscounties.
HisyearsinCongresshad earnedhimtremendousrespectamong hiscolleagues. InJanuary1973,he becametheDeanoftheHouseofRepresentatives,anhonorarytitleforthe longest-servingmemberoftheHouse ofRepresentatives,oneofonlyfive Texanstoeverholdthetitle. Alsoin 1973,LakeTexarkana,wasrenamedWrightPatmanLakeinhonor ofthecongressman. By1975,however,hishealth andcareerhadbeguntodecline. Anew groupofcongressmenhadbeenswept intoofficeinthe1974mid-termelectionsangryovertheWatergatescandal aswellastheoldsenioritysystemthat onlyallowedoldermembersofCongresstochairimportantcommittees. This,coupledwithPatman’s health,ledhimtobeingunceremoniouslyvotedoutaschairmanofthe HouseBankingCommittee. Thenext winter,hecontractedafatalcaseof pneumoniaanddiedonMarch7,1976, afterhavingservedasamemberof Congressfor47years.

Themessages latelyhave givenussome thingstothink about,as God’sword bringsusintoa reverentialfear andawarenessofHispresence.Many differenttypesofpeoplereadfaithcolumns,includingsomewhoarenot openlyreligious,butarecuriousspectators.Irespectyourcautionand whereyouareinyourjourney,and hopeyouwillconsidertheBiblepassages.ForthosewhoconfessChristas theirLord,ourwalksareatdifferent levelsofpassionasthespiritualfires burnatvariousdegreeswithinus. Someofyouwatchthenewsand browsetheinternettoseewhat’shappeningintheworld,whileothershave decidedthatlisteningtothetsunamiof opinions,speculations,andconspiracy theoriesistakingatollontheirblood pressureandaredeterminedtostep awaytokeeptheirmindsandtheir conscienceasclearandcleanaspossible.Which,bytheway,Isincerely respectyou.Whateverthecase,we realizethatwhereverweare,absorbing negativeknowledgeweighsheavilyon ouremotionsandwell-being.
Yes,truthseekersarerelentlessbecausetheywanttoknowwhat’sgoing on,andthat’sgood,right?Theydonot wanttobedeceived,andIcanperfectlyrelatetothiswayofthinking.However,weseldomconsiderthatmuchof whatwehearisnotaccurate.Misinformationhasbecomelikeaplague,and amongthemanyreasonspeoplespew rumors,wecanagreethatcarelessgossipcomesfromalackofconcernand theabsenceofintegrity.Therootof slanderincludesbeingoffended,which isdirectlyassociatedwithfallingintoa snaretrapofhatredandmisery.People arepaidfortheirvideos,asthegeneral goalistogainpopularityandhopefullygoviral.Butpoliticsisliketheold cycleofhesays,shesays.Wedonot positivelyknowwhattheyaresaying istrue,andwealsodonotknowifitis, oratleastaportionofit.Sowhat’sthe answer?Ephesians4:29-32isagreat placetostart.
Iknowsomeofyouarethinkingthat weshouldbelikeawatchmanonthe walls,soundingthealarm,andblowingthetrumpettowarnthepeopleof danger.Iunderstand,andconsidered myselfasGod’smessenger,buthereis thekey:Standingfortruthisonething, butspreadingthingsthatmightbe taintedwithdeceptionisanother.Besides,ifwespendmoretimedwelling onhoweviltheworldis,wearebecominglopsidedinourresponsibility toallowGod’slighttoshinewithinus. WearefilledwithlightbecauseChrist isgreaterthansin,butwedecidehow muchofHislightisreleased.Heisnot focusedordepressedaboutrampant wickedness,andneithershouldwe.
