Yesterday was a sad day for many of us in this country, such a wide variety of awful events occurred, reflecting a poor state of affairs in the United States.As a huge believer in freedom of speech and supporter of those who respectfully engage with others they disagree with, Charlie Kirk’s assassination was particularly disturbing to me.
To be honest, for my own attempt at sanity I don’t pay attention to as much news as you would think a newspaper owner would. I do not keep up with “influencers”, I do not have a Tik Tok and barely have an Instagram to speak of. I did not know who Charlie Kirk was until I heard about his assassination yesterday. I don’t know all of his views, I have no ability to speak on that but from what it appears to me he was a Christian who encouraged open conversations.And now he is dead. I am a pretty big “conspiracy theorist” by most people’ s standards, although I am happy to see as a whole we are treated better and offered less tin foil hats by others as more truth comes out. There are many interesting theories already of who actually killed him, but right now, all I see are two things: some people, particularly conservative Christians, who are saddened and upset, and then unfortunately what I would call just pure hatefulness of others rejoicing over the death of someone who encouraged free exchange of ideas. You all know where I stand based on this publication and if you know me– I am a Christian, above all else. I also truly enjoy the free exchange of ideas and information about the world. Stay open to others, love your neighbor and pray forAmerica!
LocalLeadershipAttendsInterface ConferenceGroup Thisweek,wesatdownwith MonteWalker,CityAdministratorandChiefOperating OfficeroftheEconomicDevelopmentCommitteein Howe,todiscussarecent InterfaceConferenceGroup meetingsomeoftheleadershipofHoweattendedthis Tuesday.Walkerwasalsoa moderatoratthisevent.The meetingwasspecifiedfor NorthTexasandDFW,with manybrokers,retailers,industrialinvestors,manufacturinginvestorsandresidentiallandusedevelopers.Here iswhatWalkerhadtosay abouttheconferenceandhow itaffectsthefutureofHowe:
“Itwasinteresting (attending),inthatwefigured outwhattheDFWplayers; frameofmindisasfaras wherethegrowthishappening.Everybodyunderstands thatthisisagrowthpattern andwhatIgotoutofitisthat DFWisthenumberonetier marketinthecountrybecause oftheeconomics.Ifyou're investinginLAorNew York,yourrateofreturnis notgoingtobenearlywhatit wouldbeherebaseduponall theeconomiccomponents thatgointothatasfarasthe housingmarket.,whatare workerspayingperincome, perhome,istheygetsomuch morebangforthebuckhere thantheywouldinNewYork orLA.That'swhyyou're seeingDFWjustexplodethe wayitisbecausethey're they'rebringingtheirworkforcehere,they'rerelocating alloftheiroperationshere. Thatwaseyeopening-It'snot thatIdidn'tunderstandthator knowthatalready,buttohear itsomanytimesfromso manybigplayerswashuge.”
WalkerexplainedthatHowe hadnotpreviouslyattended meetingssuchasthis,andat thistimethe“bigplayers”of DFWinthetopmarketsrarelymentionednorthofAnna. Walkerexpandedthathe believesHowewill“sneakup onalotofpeople”overtime becausewedidnothavethe infrastructureinplacetohandleanykindofindustrialor evenresidentialgrowthwhichleadstocommercial growth,tobepartofthese conversations,priortonow. Commercialgrowth,suchas restaurants,retail,etc.are baseduponcurrentnumbers ofhousinginanarea,asthe areaexpandsin“rooftops” theabilitytobringinnew thingswillopenup.
AccordingtheWalker,there areafewstepsinthisprocess ofgrowththatarekeyfactors. Economyfactors,suchas waitingforinterestratesto drophaveaffectedthings-as
soonasinterestratesdrop,he says“wearegoingtosee velocityofthisindustrialand retailmarketsjustexplode”. Additionally,Howemust begintobuild“rooftops”in ordertohavethenumbersof residentstomeettherequirementsofbusinessessuchas restaurants,grocerystoresetc. thatwouldliketocometo town.OurproximitytoShermanisalsoafactor:Walker expressedthatduetoour proximityofTIandGlobal Wafers,wewillhopefully havetheabilitytohavesupplierbusinessesforthoseindustrieshere,creatingmanynew jobsinthefuture.
Tuesday“wasaboutexposure, openinguphowtogetonthe
radarforsomeofthesebig playersinDallasintheNorth Texasregion.That’sreally whatitwasabout,wewere thehighestlevelsponsorand ourEDCsupportedsothatwe couldgetinfrontofsomeof theseplayers.”,Walker.
Whenaskedwhatmetroplex townHoweleadershipis hopingtopatternoffof, Walkeranswered,“Ithinkwe haveagreatopportunitytobe inthepositionwearebecause wecanlookatMelissaand AnnaandVanAlstyneand say,Dowewantthis?Dowe wantthat?Dowewantthis? I thinkearlyonwhatMelissa wasdoingisagreatpattern forusresidentially.Obviously,youwantallthecommer-
cialandretailthatAnnais gettingbutIdon'tknowthat younecessarilywanttodrive yourresidentialpatterninthe samedirectionthatAnnahas gone.Thenewspaperasked, “Soy'allarethinkingresidentiallymoreMelissacommercial,moreAnna?”Walker answered,“Yes,andthat's goingtobetougherbecause obviously,ifyougotheAnna route,you'reguaranteedallof thosecommercialdrivers.If yougototheMelissarouteof largerlotsitbecomesaresidentiallyfriendlycommunity (thelastthreewordswere paraphrasedbythenewspaper editor).Youknowthat'swhat wewanttodo.Wedon'twant tobecomeaplacewhere,you know,ColinCounty'sfleeing
ColinCountybecauseof whatithasbecome.Wedon't wanttobeadestinationof whatthey'retryingtoescape. Ithinkifwecanstayonthat pattern,andifwecandoit therightway,andmaintain ourzoningetc.Ithinkwe'll beingreatshapetobeableto attractalotofwhatAnnahas donecommercialwise.It maynothappenasquicklyas itdidinAnnajustbecause theyjustsmashedeverybody inthereinaveryquick amountoftime,butI'drather doittherightwaythanthe quickway.”

Sandwichedinonourrefrigerator, alongwiththepicsofthegreat-grands aretwoshoppinglists–one withgroceryitemslike flour,catsup,lettuce, oliveoil;theotheroneisforthebirds –literally–blackoilsunflowerseeds, peanutsintheshellandsoon. Items onthissecondlistensurethatwehave aregularsourceofentertainmentright outsideourkitchenwindow-the backyardbirds.
Thisisourfirstcolumnononeofour favoritepastimes,watchingbirds. You canjoinus,justgrabacupofcoffee andsitbythewindowandwatchfora spell.Rightnowweareseeinglotsof White-wingedDoves,Cardinalsand HouseFinches,plusapairofCarolina Chickadees,aCarolinaWrenandoccasionalTuftedTitmouse.Another regular,atleastforthenextmonthor so,isaRuby-throatedHummingbird.
Anoteaboutthedoves- theyusedto beseenmuchfarthersouthinTexas butbeganshowingupinourareaa fewyearsago. Nowtheyareprolific andwecallthethe“flyingpigs”becausetheydescendonthefeedersin suchlargenumbers.
Anotherbackyardvisitorwhoenjoys thebirdseedisthesquirrel. Wehave anumberoffeeders,indifferent styles. Rightnowoursquirrelscannot accessanyofourhangingfeedersbut anythingonthegroundisfair game! Inpastyearswehadavery smartsquirrelwhomanagedtoclimb the“birdpole”,moreonthatlater.

TexasHistoryMinute JamesPinckneyHendersonmaynot havebeenoneofthemostfamousof earlyTexasfigures,buthisactionswere perhapssomeofthemostimportant. Asalawyer,diplomat,andthe state’sfirstgovernor,hehelpedbuild strongfoundationsforthefuture ofTexas.
HendersonwasborninNorth Carolinain1808. Bytheageof21,he hadgraduatedfromtheUniversityof NorthCarolinaLawSchoolandearned admissiontothestatebar. Hebecame knownforhisvoraciousstudyhabits duringhisyearsinschool,poringover lawbooksuptoeighteenhoursper day.
ForHenderson,failuretogiveoneself entirelytoataskwasneveracceptable. Hisdedicationwonhimgreatadmirationamonghispeers. Becauseof this,herosequicklytotherankofcolonelintheNorthCarolinamilitia. In 1835,hemovedtocentralMississippiwhereheopenedalaw practice. However,newsoftheevents unfoldinginTexascapturedhisattention. TheTexasRevolutionhadarrived,andHendersonwasdetermined tobeapartofit. Inspiredbythefight forTexasindependence,hequickly raisedmoneyandvolunteersforthe effort,butthefightingwasoverbythe timetheyarrivedinJune 1836. Texasneverthelesspromoted himtogeneralandsenthimbackto theUnitedStatestotrytoraisemore volunteers,fearingMexicanforces couldreturn.
UpontheelectionofSamHoustonaspresidentof theRepublicofTexasinSeptember,the newpresidentchoseHendersonasa trustedpartofhisnewcabinet. He servedbrieflyasattorneygeneralbefore becomingsecretaryofstatein 1837. Houstonwantedto bringTexasintotheUnion,butthe Americangovernmentwashesitant. WiththeUnitedStatesunwilling toprovokeMexicobybringingTexasintotheUnion,foreignsupportbecamevital.
HoustonthusnamedHendersonasthe TexasAmbassadorto bothFranceandGreatBritain,twoof themostpowerfulnationsintheworld atthetime. Throughhisdeliberateand persistentnegotiations,Hendersonpersuadedthetwo reluctantpowerstonotonlyrecognizeTexasindependencebutalsoto agreetogeneroustradeterms. HereturnedtoTexasafterHouston’s termendedin1838. Shortlyafterward, heopenedaprivatelawpracticeinSan Augustineandsettledinwithhisnew wife.
Hislastdutyfor theTexasRepublicwasperhapshis mostimportant. InJanuary1844,there -electedPresidentHoustonsenthim toWashington,DC,withIsaacVan Zandttonegotiateanannexationtreaty withtheUnitedStates. Threatsofwar withMexicoandprotestsbyabolitionistsoverslaveryinTexashampered negotiations,butusingfearsofBritish domination overTexasandHenderson’spersis-
tencewontheday. AnannexationtreatywassignedonApril12,1844.
AfterapprovalbybothgovernmentsandTexasvoters,plansforanew stategovernment emerged. Hendersonwasnominatedto bethestate’sfirstgovernorintheDecember1845elections. Asitwasstilla newstatewithcomparativelyfewsettlers,lessthan10,000votersparticipatedintheelectiononDecember 15. ButHendersonwastheprohibitive favoriteagainstDr.JamesB.Miller,a physicianandrelativepoliticalunknown. Hendersonwoneasily,with 82%ofthevote. OnDecember 29,TexasofficiallybecamethetwentyeighthstateintheUnion.
MuchofHenderson’stenureasgovernorwasdominatedbyorganizingthe newstategovernmentandthelarge debtthatTexashadaccumulated. The newstatelegislature namedHendersonCountyinEastTexasforhimin1846. TheCity ofHenderson,alsonamedforhim,had beenfoundedthreeyearsbefore inRuskCounty,furthereastofhis namesakecounty.
Perhapshisgreatestchallengewasthe long-threatenedwarbetweenMexicoandtheUnited Statesthatfinallyeruptedin1846. The borderdisputethatexplodedontheRio GrandegalvanizedtheUnited Statesintoaction. Mexicanforceswere pushedsteadilyfromtheborderand ultimatelyvanquishedaltogether.
In1847,withhistwo-yearterm comingtoan end,Hendersonannouncedhewould notseekre-election. Hespentthenext fewyearspracticinglawinSanAugustinebeforehewasonceagaincalled backintopublicservice.
Oneofthestate’sfirsttwoUSSenators, Sen.ThomasJeffersonRusk,diedsuddenlyin1857. InNovember,Gov.ElishaM.PeaseappointedHendersonto filltheremainderofSen.Rusk’s term. However,Hendersonhimself diedinJune1858,barelyfiftyyearsold.

Ialsorealizethatit’samuchhappier thoughttobelievethatallcurrent Christiansfromaroundtheworldwill nothavetofacethetribulationorpersecutionfromtheAnti-Christ.Nopain, suffering,torture,ordeath,orhavingto standforourfaithinJesuswitha swordatournecks.Nowonderit’s becomeoneofthemostpopulardoctrinesthatinspiresshoutinganddancing.It’slikebeingstrandedonadesert island,andyoulookoutandseeaship comingtorescueyou.Amiracle!Exceptthere’sahugedifference.Evenif wewalkthroughtheworstsuffering wecanimagine,Christisallweneed, andHislovewillalwayssurroundus.

Ihopeyouhavebeenresearchingthe scripturesthat’sbeensharedoverthe last4weeks.ReadMatthew13:18-30, andseetheharvestisnotarescuebut rathertheendoftheage.I’veletdown myguardandasI’vestatedthatneither Jesus,thedisciples,Paul,oranywriter oftheNewTestamentbelievedor taughtapreormidtribulationrapture. Irarelydiscusseschatologybecauseof thetremendouscontroversy.I’vebeen timid,andI’msuremanypastorsfeel thesameway.It’scomplicated,divisive,speculative,andsobering,butit shouldalsocauseeverysainttofallon theirfacesinreverentialfear,(whichis exactlywhereweshouldlive).Seminary’steachstudentstobeopenmindedtoallegory’s,andadvisetobe cautiouswithexplainingend-time prophecy’s.Manypastorsdecideto avoidthesubjectastheend-timesare notpracticalforeverydayproblems.
Eachofushasmadethedecision whomwewillserve,wedonothave towaituntilweareforcedtotakethe mark.Ourmindsandfaithisalready established.Bylayingasideourselfcenteredstriving,wecanexperience genuinejoy,fulfillment,andadeeper, God-centeredexistence.OurcommitmenttoHimisaholyvowthatultimatelyleadstotheassuranceofeternal lifeandadeeperrelationshipwith ChristthroughtheHolySpirit.
