The school received the ACT summary from students who took the test in 2019. The average score in English was a 20.2, Math 20.1, Reading 22.5, Science 21.9, and overall composite 21.3. Reading was down from last year, but is nearly a point higher from the year before and similar to 2016. Math dropped nearly a point in math fell below the average. Wilson felt that Reading and Science were on target with trends from previous years. The overall 21.3 score was less than last year. “The main thing we look at is if we’re above the state (average) and with one exception, we’re well above the state,” said Wilson. “We look for trends and
right now, we look pretty normal.” Indicators are that a student that scores an 18 or higher in English on the ACT, there’s a 50 percent chance the student would receive a B or higher in college or 75 percent chance of getting a C or higher. Of the Howe students, 66 percent scored 18 or higher. In Math, the benchmark is 22 where Howe has 37 percent reach that mark. The Science benchmark was 22 and 54 percent of Howe students reached that mark. In Biology, the benchmark was 23 and 46 percent of Howe students reached that mark. Howe students were a considerable amount above the state average with the exception of math which was one percent under the average. “I think we have some things to be proud of and I think we have some things to work on,” said Wilson. “Overall, I think we’re kind of in that normal range for Howe High School.” Wilson also said a retaining wall is about to be constructed on the east property of Summit Hill Elementary. New sod and irrigation will also be added to that campus. The school zone beacon will also be moved. Those three projects will cost a little over $100,000.
Texoma Patriots meeting Tuesday The Texoma Patriots will meet tomorrow night, Oct. 29 at Buck Snort BBQ in Van Alstyne and hear from Texas State Representative Reggie Smith (District 62), who will go over the 10 amendments to the Texas Constitution on the November 5 ballot. The Texoma Patriots discuss the pros and cons of each amendment. The knowledge gained from this discussion will hopefully assist voters in understanding how each of these amendments could affect you. Ten amendments to the Texas Constitution were passed by the Legislature during the 86th legislative session. Constitutional amendments differ from regular bills in that they require voter approval before they take effect. This process helps assure that the basic core principles of the state which are set forth in its Constitution remain in the hands of those awho choose to be governed by those principles.
