Pride of Howe heading to state The very first official Howe/Van Alstyne game took place on Oct. 24, 1941. The two teams met unofficially before the UIL sanctioning in 1920. After the 2000 season, the name “Silver Spike” was given to the rivalry and a trophy was created with a silver spike on the front. One must wonder as the two schools begin to separate in enrollment figures how much longer this rivalry will exist for at least the short-term. Van Alstyne turned in 517 enrollment for their high school whereas Howe is around 355.
