The recent election of Mamdani as the Mayor of New York City has added fuel to the fire for the many people warning of an “Islamic takeover” in the United States. If that is the case, what does a country that touts “freedom for all” do to deter such a thing? Recent big figures in media have been causing a stir about Israel and America’s support of it. Mainstream Christians, not just theologians, are now in conversations of if the Jewish people are still God’ s chosen people or if when Christ died all Christians have become His chosen people. (Covenant theory vs. Dispensationalism) Does supporting the Jewish people mean we must support everything the Israeli government does?
There are many questions swirling around right now, misinformation, half-truths and scary concepts. We can ’t be a nation that claims to be Christian while our Bibles gather dust on the bookshelf anymore. Lack of knowledge leads to twisting of ideas and texts to be very easy to fall for. Also, what do followers of Islam and Judaism believe according to their texts? Keepingourbirdbathcleanandfilled paidoffagainthisweekwhenfive Yellow-rumpedWarblersstoppedby foradrink.Accordingtothebird book,theyareoneofthemorecommonwarblerswearelikelytoseein wintermonths. Theyaresmall,smallerthanasparrow,andtanwithabright yellowrump,adarkcheekandwhite wingbars.
Ourvisitorsstillhadtheirdarkbreedingplumage;theirbreedingareasare primarilyinCanadaandAlaska,so thesebirdshadmadealongjourneyto reachTexas.
Wewon’tseeawarbleratthefeeders, astheygoforinsectsandberries. At ourplacetheyareusuallyflitting aroundinthetreetops,lookingfor
bugs.
Wehaveseveralbirdbaths;themost popularoneinwinterisaheated one. Keepingthemcleanhasbeen easiersincewediscoveredcopper disksmadetolieonthebottomofthe bath;thecopperpreventsthegrowth ofalgae.
Wehaveapoolgoingonwhichmigratorybirdwillappearnext;willitbe aGoldfinchoraJunco?Agoodcold frontshouldstartmigrationsoon. And speakingofmigration,lastweekwe sawquiteafewMonarchbutterflies aroundouryard,mostlyonaplanting ofGregg’sMistflower,gettingnectar, buthere’sapicofonewefoundrestinguponatomatoplantbeforepushingfurthersouthonthejourneyto Mexico.Wonderwhatyouareseeing inyourbackyard?
TexasHistoryMinute Theviolenceof thewesternfrontierhasalternately fascinatedandrepelledreadersfor generations. Gunfightsbetweenthe law,outlaws,and evenin-lawshavesincebecometales retoldfordecades. Notoriousgunman JohnWesleyHardinwasoneofthe bloodiestofall. Inhisshortforty-two years,Hardinkilledmorethantwo dozenpeopleacrossTexas.
JohnWesleyHardinwasthe secondsonoftenchildrenborntoa Methodistpreacherandhiswife. Hardinwasbornin theNorthTexascommunityofBonhaminMay1853. Hisfather,Rev. JamesHardin,wasacircuitrider preacher,havingtoridefromone churchtothenexttodeliverservices onsuccessiveSundays. Itwasadifficultlifeforamanoffaithaswellas difficultonthefamilybecauseofthe longdistancesandsometimeslong absences,butthefamilyalwayshadall thenecessities.
By1859,theelderHardinhad settledinSumterinEastTexastoestablishaschoolandfinallyenjoya quietlife,somethingthattheyounger Hardinwouldmakeextraordinarily complicated. Allofhischildrenwould eventuallyattendthisschool.
However,fromayoungage, Hardinwasalwaysintroubleofsome kind. Attheageofninein1862,he attemptedtorunawayfromhometo jointheConfederateArmy. Attheage of14in1867,hegotintoaknifefight athisfather’sschool,nearlykillinga fellowstudent. Hisfatherhadno choicebuttoexpelhim. Thenext year,atagefifteen,hekilledforthe firsttimewhenheshotandkilleda formerslavenamedMajeHolshousen followingafight.
FollowingthedeathofHolshousen,Hardinhidoutathisolder brother’shousesomethirtymilesto theNorth,supposedlyathisfather’s behest. Helaterclaimedtohaveshot andkilledthreeUniontroopsontheir waytoarresthimastheyapproached thehome.
However,nomilitaryrecords existoftheincident.
Otherrecordsatthetimesuggestthatamurdermayhaveoccurred intheareaaroundthattime.Because ofpoorrecords,conflictingaccounts, andHardin’sowntalltalesandexaggerations,hisexactrecordisshrouded inmystery. Hedeniedsomedeathsfor whichtherewasconsiderableevidence butbraggedaboutthedeathsofothers forwhichnoevidenceexisted.
Regardless,Hardinwasonthe runagain,scramblingfromplaceto placeandpickingupavarietyofjobs formoney. Atonepoint,hetaught schoolinNavarroCounty. Healso traveledwithanotherwantedman brieflybeforehiscapture.
Ashegrewolder,amixtureof alcohol,aquicktemper,andasurly dispositionlandedhiminaseriesof knifefightsandgunfightsthatlefta trailofbodiesacrossTexas. Heturned togambling,whichonlydeepenedhis problemswiththelaw. Heallegedly shotouttheeyeofamantowinabet attheageof16. InJanuary1870,he
gotintoanothergunfightwithaman namedBenBradleywhohadaccused himofcheatingatcardsatalocalsaloon. HekilledBradleyinthestreets ofTowashinHillCounty;andBradley’sassociate,amanknownonlyas JudgeMoore,disappearedshortlyafterward. Hardinlaterclaimedtohave killedMoore. Severalotherfistfights andgunfightsfollowed.
InJanuary1871,hewasarrestedinHarrisonCountyonfour chargesofmurderandonechargeof horsetheft. Oneofthechargeswas allegedlyforthemurderofWaco TownMarshalL.J.Hoffman. Ashe wasbeingbroughtfrom EastTexastoWacoforthetrial,Hardinescaped,killingastatepoliceman intheprocess. Hewasarrested inBellCountysomeweekslaterand killedthreemoremen,escapingonce again. Beforeheeventurned18,Hardinhadkilledatleasteightmenand possiblymore.
Hefoundworkasahandona cattledriveontheChisolmTrailshortlyafterward. WhileHardinmanaged toescapeauthoritiesinTexasforthe timebeing,hestillfoundhimselfin gunfightsonthewaytoKansas. Hardin’sdeadlycareerwasjuststarting.
Canweexplainwhatwe believe? Thefoundationofthe Christianfaith, alongwiththe hopeofeternal salvationin thenextlife,is basedonthe torturousdeath andglorified resurrectionof theonlyperfectindividual weknowas JesusChrist.Whenwetrust thatHissacrificialbloodistheonly paymentforourforgivenessandour hopeforredemption,webecome reborn,anewspiritualcreationwithin Hisfamilyandkingdom.DoyoubelievethattrustinginthisGod-manis thegreatestdemonstrationoflovethe worldhaseverknown?Sincethismiraculouseventhappenedover2000 yearsago,doyouknowwhyyoubelievethesepromisesaretrue?
Let’sgoalittlefurther.Haveyouever hadalife-changingencounterwiththe personcalledtheSonofGod?Did youknowthatjustbelievingthereisa God,orthatJesusisreal,isNOTthe samethingasgivingallofyour heart,mind,andsoultoHim?Pastors arenottheonlyoneswhoarecalledto explainandteachGod’sword; everypersonwhohasinvitedChristto betheirLordandSaviorshouldspend everyavailablemomentfocusing onHimandgettingtoknowHim moreintimatelythroughprayerand study.ThisishowHischildrenbecomeHisfearless,wise,mighty,and overcomingwarriors.
Overthelast100years,thenumberof peopleinterestedinresearchingthe Biblehasincreased.I’mnotreferring tothosewhowanttodrawcloserto God,butrathertheprogressiveintellectualcriticswhotrytorefuteand disprovewhatiswritten.Thesearenot yourcasualreaderswhoacceptwhat someonesaysonthesurfaceorare satisfiedwiththeideaofjustbelieving byfaith.Similartohowthosewho mustproveeverythingaccordingto science,theseindividualsareintense andseekmoredifficultanswersthan arediscussedinchurchclasses.In fact,ifoneoftheseagnosticswereto presenttheirviewsinchurch,most wouldbeconsideredahereticor worse.
Ihaveseveralfriendsaroundthecountry,andwehaveinterestingdiscussionsaboutGodandtheBible.AsI mentioned,wehavemanyquestions aboutChristianitythatareoftenleftto speculation.I’vereadsomeofthe textualcriticswhotakeprideinbeing abletopinapreacheragainstthewall whohasbeeninChristian leadershipmostofhislife.I’mwriting thissmallarticlenottodiscourageyou whoarefollowersofChrist,butto blowthetrumpetofwarningabout howimportantitistoknowwhatwe believe.Especiallyinthelast60years, whilethenominalChristianshave beenspirituallyasleep,thesescholars havebeenhardatworktryingtoseeif
whatthetextsaysisactuallycorrect.I knowthatmanywillsay,That’sahuge wasteoftimeandisoffensiveto thosewhotrustGod,buthowcanwe condemnthosewhohavesincerely giventheirlivestoresearchingevery jotandtittleoftheBible?
It’sonethingtoknowwhatsomething says,andit’sanotherthingtoexplain whatitmeans.Thisistruewiththe Bible,asthereareindividualswho havememorizedwhatiswritten,but dotheyknowhowtotranslatethe originallanguagesintoourmodern English?Forexample,I’mnotsaying thatIagreewithwhatBartEhrman teaches,butheisrecognizedasahighlyrespectedBiblicalscholarwhofocusesonthetextualcriticismofthe NewTestament,thehistoricalJesus, andtheoriginsanddevelopmentof earlyChristianity.Foranyonetodebate himonBiblicaltopics,theywould needtobringtheirA-gameoftheologicalresearch,andnotjustanswerslike, “Ibelievethisbecausethat’swhatmy grandmothersaid.”
MypointisthatallChristiansshould notonlystandfortheirconvictions,but havetheabilitytoprovewhythey acceptandtrustthem.Thereasonwhy allChristiansarenotdedicatedtheologiansisthatit’smucheasierto acceptamealthantocookone.Most peoplesayIdonothavetimetostudy theBible,whilespendingseveral hoursadaywatchingTVandplaying ontheirphones.Iencourageeveryfollowertotakeascholarlyapproachto understandingreligioustexts,including theirfaith-basedviewssotheycanbe instantinseasonandoutofseason togiveananswer.IITimothy2:15is notonlyaboutgainingknowledge,it’s takingthetimetorightlydivideHis wordandbeenlightenedbyGod’s divinerevelation.
