While both candidates are very likable guys, they seem to be on very opposite ends of what the role of commissioner is and should be. Jeff Whitmire, who took office in 2013, says the role of the commissioner is one of a budgetary manager as well as road maintenance. He says that the commissioner's office oversees a $60 million budget and his experience with large budgets in his professional career gives him the advantage. His challenger Scott Renfro has said publicly that he has no complaints of the job that Whitmire has done, but he says he has the practical know-how to make the good decisions necessary to benefit the longtime county residents as well as the new ones
moving inside the county line. Joe Brown has been the District Attorney in Grayson County for the past 15 years and he has recently stated that he has aggressively prosecuted criminals when he needs to but has been smart on crime when he needed. Just as in the commissioner's race, Peterson Cate stated that there was nothing wrong with the job that Brown has been doing in the DA's office, but thinks it has become stale and that she wants to institute a mental health court. In the past two months, the candidates have been in forums held by the Texoma Patriots
organization. The results in those polls have been the following:
Grayson County District Attorney: Joe Brown, 40; Bobbie Peterson Cate, 8.
Sheriff: Tom Watt, 51; David Russell 25; Howard Day 11.
