Learn about your antiques and collectibles with Georgia Caraway collectible dog and one of the most highly represented on objects. There is a Scotty collectors’ club and at least 3 books featuring Scotty items and their values. Collectors look for dog images in books, prints, bronzes and ceramic statues, paintings, paperweights, boxes, vases, cushions, and even on furniture.

Dogs have long been recognized as man’s best friend and have been a part of human life since the early caveman. The first dogs were probably used for hunting and for protection. Over 100 breeds of dogs have evolved from the first dog that roamed the earth more than 15 million years ago. Man has continued to domesticate the dog and visa versa. As the dog’s popularity grew, so did its appearance on objects. In the world of collecting dog objects, it might be best to specialize on one particular breed. Most people look for dogs that look like their own pet, Scotties, Great Danes, collie, bulldog, borzoi, etc. Some select a breed to collect based on the décor in their homes (ex: greyhounds and borzois to complement Art Deco furniture and accessories). The Scotty is probably the most popular

Dogs in Staffordshire pottery were enormously popular in the last half of the 19th century. Many thousands were made, with poodles and spaniels being the most common subjects. We have a set of spaniels in the Mercantile. And lots of dogs have become advertising icons. A collectible novelty is a replica of one of the world’s most famous trademarks: the smoothhaired fox terrier known as Nipper, depicted listening to “His Master’s Voice” emerging from the horn of an early phonograph. RCA Victor owned the trademark in the 1930s and gave away souvenirs in the shape of salt and pepper shakers to potential buyers of their phonographs. When RCA dropped the Nipper campaign in the 1980s to a more modern advertising philosophy, the ensuing hue and cry caused the company to bring Nipper back along with his son, “Chipper.” A lfe sized stuffed pair of Nipper and Chipper are waiting to be adopted at the Mercantile.

Also highly collectible are books illustrated with engravings by noteworthy artists. Highly prized are The Works of Sir Edwin Landseer by W. Cosmo Monkhouse (1875), Dogs in the Field with text and illustrations by Marguerite Kirme (1935) and The Power of the Dog by A. Croxton Smith published in 1910 with 20 plates in color by Maud Earl. There is a dog museum iin Texas that contains thousands of dog-related objects. I have never seen so many representations of woman’s and man’s best friend on display. Come to Howe Mercantile to see a miniature version of the dog museum. This column and our shop has really gone to the dogs. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY EVERYONE!!
