Engineering Excellence Award

Received the Engineering Excellence Award at the 37th Indian Engineering Congress by Institution of Engineers (India) held between 16 – 18 December 2022. The award was presented by Dr. K. Ponmudi, Minister of Higher Education of Tamil Nadu.

Centre of Excellence Award

Received the Centre of Excellence Award in Microsoft and AWS Academy from ICT Academy at Bridge ’22. The award was presented by Thiru T Mano Thangaraj, Honorable Minister for Information technology in the presence of Thiru S Arunraj IAS, Executive Director, Electronic Corporation of Tamilnadu and Dr G Sai Narayanan, Research Head, HCL Technologies.

Our Vice Chancellor and Registrar receive the award for Year 2022 from the Universal Mentor Association at the 2nd Higher Education Innovation and Technology Summit held at New Delhi.

EAT RIGHT CAMPUS AWARD

The ‘Eat Right Campus’ initiative led by FSSAI aims to promote safe, healthy and sustainable food in campuses such as schools, universities, colleges, workplaces, hospitals, tea estates etc. across the country. The objective is to improve the health of people and the planet and promote social and economic development of the nation.

The Award was received by the University officials from Thiru. Ma. Subramanian Honb’le Minister for Health and Family Welfare; and Thiru. T. M. Abarasan, Honb’le Minister for MSME. Government of Tamil Nadu.

AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

The Innovation Cell, Ministry of Education, Government of India aims to promote Innovation and start-up in campus. A 3.5-star rating was awarded to HITS for Annual Performance of various activities prescribed by the Cell for the year 2021 – 22

The School of Management was judged as the Silver Winner and received the IMC Award for Excellence in Management Education 2022 at the 12th Indian Management Conclave held on 9 and 10 December 2022 at IIM Kozhikode. Centre of Excellence in Satellite Technology

The advanced research centre aims to nurture and accelerate the growth of Space based technological applications for the benefit of society and to impart advanced training and research in the field of Satellite Technology and Development. The facility was unveiled by Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the presence of Dr. M Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences and Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Founder Chancellor HITS on 30 September 2022.

Centre of Excellence in Underwater Robotics and Communication

The Centre aims to establish advanced research and development in various areas of ocean engineering. It will offer unique research opportunities for students and industry partners through its under graduate and post graduate level advanced research projects along with regular Ph.D. research work. The Centre of Excellence in Underwater Robotics and Communication was inaugurated by Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in presence of Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on 30 September 2022.

The Hub was unveiled by Mr. B. Govindarajan, CEO, Royal Enfield in the presence of Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor, on 30 November 2022. It will impart high end industrial training to the students and faculty members in the emerging areas of twowheeler technology for better employability; and support innovators and potential young entrepreneurs. It will also facilitate workshop, training classroom and conference hall for hands-on-training. Royal Enfield will also provide The Mark Zuckerberg Data Science Laboratory was inaugurated on 2 December 2022 by His Excellency, Mr. Juan Rolanda Angula Monsalve, Ambassador of the Republic of Chile to India. The facility aims to provide skill training in the field of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep learning, Business intelligence, Big Data Analytics and many more.

13th CONVOCATION “Graduation is the beginning of life that you will lead in future”

The 13th Convocation of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science was celebrated on 30 September and 1 October 2022. The ceremony witnessed the success of 1852 students graduating on their big day. 52 Rank Holders were honoured with medals and cash prizes for their meritorious performance in academics.

The Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was conferred on Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India. Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Suffragan Metropolitan received the Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa).

Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India., urged the graduands to have a multidisciplinary approach to attract success in all aspects of life and to be sensitive towards the environment and find ways to utilize the natural resources judiciously.

Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India in his acceptance speech, thanked the Institution for conferring him with the Honoris Causa. He also congratulated the graduating students and encouraged them to stay well informed of current affairs and possess the right knowledge in order to excel in their domains. In his acceptance speech, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Suffragan Metropolitan recorded his gratitude to HITS for conferring on him the degree of Honoris Causa. He urged the students to practice compassion. He also motivated them to have a higher goal in life.

RAZZLE DAZZLE 8.0

The Graduation Show for the students of the eighth batch of B.Sc. Fashion Design and the first batch of B. Des. Fashion and Apparel Design was held on 2 December 2022. The budding designers showcased their innovative and stylish designs through professional models. The Chief guest for the evening was His Excellency Mr. Juan Angulo, Ambassador of Chile in India and the Guest of Honor and Show Stopper was Ms. Sakshi Agarwal, Actor and Model. Both the guests addressed an enthralled gathering and appreciated the Institution for conducting such events to encourage the budding designers. Ms. Fouzul Inaya, received the Best Designer Award and Ms. Maria Jenita was awarded the Second-Best Designer for the B. Design (Fashion and apparel Design) programme. Under the B.Sc. (Fashion Design) Programme, Mr. Mahendra Sai and Ms. Varsha M received the Best Designer and the Second-Best Designer awards respectively.

KCG VERGHESE ENDOWMENT LECTURE

The 9th Edition of Dr. KCG Verghese Endowment Lecture was delivered by Dr Arumugam Rajarajan, Director, SDSC-SHAR, at MMA Centre, Chennai on 4 July 2022. The speaker briefed about ISRO’s focus on various areas such defense, weather, communication and entertainment, highlighting the various stages of Satellite Projects and emphasized on the importance of teamwork, leadership and all-round benefits of satellite projects. The lecture was attended by Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Founder Chancellor; Mr. Ashok Verghese, Pro Chancellor; Dr. Susan Marthandan, Director Hindustan College of Arts and Science; Dr. Sivathanu Pillai, Professor Emeritus HITS; University Officials, staff and students of HGI.

EAT RIGHT MILLET MELA

The Food Safety Department of Chengalpattu District, in collaboration with the Department of Food Technology, Hindustan Institute of Technology (HITS), Padur organized the Eat Right Millet Mela on 14 December 2022 to raise awareness on the value of millets as part of the International Year of Millet (IYOM) 2023. The program was inaugurated by Mr. A.R. Rahul Nadh, District Collector, Chengalpattu who elucidated the importance of millets, its health benefits, and food security, and its impact on the economy of developing countries. The special address was delivered by Mrs. Shanta Sheela Nair, IAS (Retired) who highlighted the key characteristics of millets and their capacity for drought tolerance. She further correlated the role of organic farming with millet cultivation. Mr. SRL Idayavarman, Chairman, Tiruporur Panchayat Union; Mrs. KAS Thara Sudhakar, President, Padur Panchayat; Mrs. G. Sarguna, Project Officer, ICDS, Chengalpattu District; Deans, HODs, and faculty members from the Department of Food Technology and other departments participated in the event. Chef Koushik Shankar and Ms. A. Shrutika, Actress presented the different types of millet recipes.

KEB HANA BANK GLOBAL SCHOLARSHIP

A Letter of Intent was signed between HITS and the Republic of Chile on 2 December 2022. The agreement was penned by Mr. Ashok Verghese, Pro Chancellor and His Excellency Mr. Juan Angulo, Ambassador of Chile in India in the presence of Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor. The agreement aims to utilize the services and expertise on either side on any project, education, training, research and consultancy, to initiate students’ recruitment and digital services

DADB- GERMAN ACADEMY OF DIGITAL EDUCATION

The KEB Bank Global Scholarship worth $10,000 was presented to 20 students on 22 December 2022 . The students were selected based on their brilliant academic performance and socio-economic background. Each student received an amount of five hundred US dollars. The programme was organised in collaboration with KEB Hana Bank, South Korea. Mr. Young Seup Kwon, Consul General, Consulate of Republic of Korea, Chennai; Mr. Dae Ki Hong, Chief Executive Officer of KEB Hana Bank, Chennai; Mr.Jaeyeol Lee, Chief Operating Officer and Mr. Ramasubramanian D., Chief Manager, Hana Bank, Chennai were the dignitaries for the scholarship ceremony. Dr. S. N Sridhara, Vice Chancellor and Dr. R. W Alexander were the in house dignitaries.

LETTER OF INTENT between District Rural Development Agency, Government of Tamil Nadu and the City of Trier, Germany

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with DADB – German Academy of Digital Education for the launch of Blended Learning Course – 5G Technology on 6 July 2022. The collaboration aims to offer students future oriented education across all backgrounds. The MoU was signed in the presence of Mr. Ashok Verghese, Pro Chancellor; Dr.-Ing. Carsten Schroeder, CEO & Founder, DADB alongside Mr. Neleesh, MD, DADB; Mr. Shone, Operation Lead, DADB India Pvt Ltd.

HITS hosted the Letter of Intent (LOI) between the District Rural Development Agency, Government of Tamil Nadu and the City of Trier, Germany with the coordination and support from Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany HITS. This collaboration looks forward to exchange best practices in sustainable development. IURC Annual Event - Trier City, Germany, HITS and Chengalpattu RegionCooperative Leadership

The IURC representatives, Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director and Dr. M. Jaikumar, Professor and Head, Department of Automobile Engineering along with the representatives of Chengalpattu region, Mr. S. Selvakumar, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Government of Tamil Nadu and Mr. S. Victor Amirtha Raj, Assistant Executive Engineer, DRDA met the IURC Asia & Australasia Team in Brussels at the IURC Annual Event 2022 on 7 and 8 November 2022. The delegates exchanged urban/regional development experiences, found solutions to common challenges, and envisioned joint actions. The event was attended by more than 50 delegates from Europe, China, India, Southeast Asia, New Zealand and Australia

International Study Tour 2022 to Malaysia by the students of SOM

The II-year MBA students visited Malaysia between 26 and 29 August 2022 as part for the International Study Tour. The objective of the visit was to help students to understand the academic prospects, internship opportunities, job offers and exchange programmes available in Malaysia. The group consisted of 76 students of MBA. The students enjoyed City Tour of Kuala Lumpur by visiting the Kings Palace, National Monument, Independence Square, Harrison Chocolate Factory, Handmade Chocolate, PETRONAS Twin Towers. The contingent also visited the Pioneer Coach Factory and the World Convention Centre.

DAAD Academic Exchange Program

By providing funding for people from all countries of the world and facilitating diverse intercultural encounters, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) strengthens diversity and mutual understanding. Under Service Prof. Dr. M Jaikumar, Head, Dr T. Shanmuganathan, Assistant Professor, Mr. S. K. Vignesh, Research Scholar and 4 Under Graduate Students from the Department of Automobile Engineering, visited ADAS Vehicle Testing, Integration Facilities and Automated Driving Systems at ZF ADAS Validation Centre, Koblenz on 12 July 2022. They were accompanied by Prof. Dr. Peter Koenig and students from Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany. During the visit, ZF ADAS Team Mr. Niklas Geiss, Dr. Christian Fuahs and Dr. Constanze Pradarutti briefed the visitors on ADAS Validation and Homologation with breakthrough Data and AI.

Researcher Visit

Deakin University Study Tour

The students, under the Blue Marble Study Tour, visited Deakin University, Australia between 30 October and 7 November 2022. Mr. R. Jagadeesh, Ms. Siri Reddy, IIIyear B. Tech., students of Mechanical Engineering and Mr. Abishek Reddy S, III-year B. Tech. CSE (Data Science) participated in the tour. As a part of the study tour, students had academic deliberations with the expert Professors of Deakin University, project consultations, lab visits and local tour.

Ms. Bakkialakshmi. V. S., a Full-Time Research scholar from CSE visited Austria (Europe) on an academic World Technologies Universities Network (WTUN) research exchange for two weeks during the month of October 2022. She had the opportunity to visit partner university research centres, and meet the local researchers. The visit was worth more than 2000 GBP and was funded by the WTUN.

Youth Talks with Ms. Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Member of Parliament

Provided with the knowledge and opportunities, youth can be a driving force for a nation’s development. Keeping this in view, HITS initiated — “Youth Talks”, an encouraging platform for youngsters to address on pressing and trending topics on 25 April 2022. The talk was led by Ms. Kanimozhi Karunaidhi, Member of Parliament, who opined that the youth are the nerve centre of the society; and unless and until they come forward and take charge, nothing will move ahead. She patiently listened and firmly answered to more than two dozens of questions.

WORLD SPACE WEEK

HITS in association with Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), SHAR, ISRO organized the World Space Week from 7 to 9 October 2022. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Space and Sustainability.” The celebration was inaugurated by Thiru. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamazhi, Hon’ble Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. The event was attended by staff and students from 77 schools and 21 colleges. Various competitions such as: quiz, drawing, extempore, poster painting, live project exhibition, AeroExpo and drone competition were conducted for both school and college students. On this memorable day, HITS housed above 2000 participants from different institutions in and around Chennai.

Auto Expo ’23

The Auto Expo ’23 is one of the world’s premier auto shows. A signature event that witnessed the coming together of the best minds in the automobile industry to showcase their products, technologies, concepts and trends. The Expo was held between 13 and 18 January 2023 at Greater Noida, Delhi. The Motor Show 2023 witnessed 23 unveilings and launches. Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Kia India, Lexus, Toyota, Kirloskar, MG Motor etc., exhibited their new launches at the Auto Expo. Hindustan Group of Institutions participated in the Auto Expo ’23 and exhibited four all-terrain vehicles and two Electric One vehicles. The HGI stall was visited by eminent personalities from the auto industry who expressed their willingness for collaborations.

RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy) ATHIBAN Awards

Hosted jointly by the Rotaract Clubs of Hindustan University, HIET, KCG College of Technology, and Hindustan College of Arts and Science. The event was held on 10 April 2022 and was sponsored by Rotary Club of Chennai Capital. The event was graced by the officials of the Rotary Club. More than 150 Rotaractors enthusiastically attended the event.

The Christmas Celebration of Hindustan Group of Institutions was held on 15 December 2022 at HITS Bay Range Campus. The event was presided over by Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Founder-Chancellor, Hindustan Group of Institutions. The Chief Guest was Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Makarios Episcopa, Bishop of Chennai – Bangalore Diocese, Mar Thoma Church who briefed the significance of Christmas which is moving from darkness to light through real-life incidents, stories and excerpts from the Holy Bible. The Guest of Honour was Dr. Joseph Thomas, Vice President and Business Head-Americas at Wipro Infrastructure Engineering. The other notable dignitaries to grace the occasion were Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor, Mr. Ashok Verghese, Pro Chancellor, officials, staff and students of HGI. Under the Open Category which included Churches/Organizations the first prize was won by E-Ministry, Tambaram; the Second Prize by Staves Choir Group, Chennai; and third was won by St Stephen’s Tamil Church, Pallavaram. In the College Category the first prize under the College Category was won by Patrician College of Arts and Science, Adyar. The second and third position were won by Madras Medical Mission College of Health Sciences and Alpha Arts and Science College respectively. The winners under the school category are: first prize are Sacred Heart International School, Marthandam; second prize; Union Christian Public School, Chennai; and the third prize was won by MCC Campus Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai.

PONGAL

Pongal, the festival of harvest was celebrated on 14 January 2023. The Chief Guest for the celebration was Thiru. S. S Balaji, MLA of the Thiruporur Constituency and the Guest of Honour was Dr.Sharmila Balaji, General Physician, Actress and Social Activist. Thiru. S. S Balaji emphasised the importance of agriculture and the efforts by the Government to enhance it. He appreciated HITS for celebrating the thanksgiving festival of farmers. He urged the students to consider farming as a profession. The Guest of Honour, Dr. Sharmila, briefed the efforts and hardwork of farmers in bringing food to the dining table and said that they should not be neglected. The officials of the Institution also participated in the celebration which witnessed Traditional folk dance performances such as, Thappattam, Karakattam, Oyilattam and Maadattam by Damuru, the Band. Also the Pongal dish was cooked live and served to the guests. The staff and students participated in traditional games, construction of a makeshift hut and rangoli making.

Onam

The Ponnonam '22 was graced by the presence of Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, HITS and Ms. Parvati Nair, Indian Actress as chief guests. With the lighting of ceremonial lamp and key address marked the message of joy and celebrations for the festivities. The event was lit with various forms of decor ranging from Athapookalam competition to cultural programme garnering the participation of students and staffs alike. Stellar performances of Mohiniyattam, Thiruvathira, Melam, Group Singing, Fusion Dance, Singari Melam and many more created a wave of joy and vibrancy at HITS! The event concluded on a delicious note with traditional Onam Sadhya.

CelebrationsTalk

The 2-day Interdepartmental Cultural Fest, Yarona ’22 held on 5 and 6 April 2022 witnessed the host of over 40 main, special, and fun events paired up with live DJ Night by DJ Sam and DJ Priyanka and the Music Concert by the Non-Violinist Project. The Overall championship (rolling trophy) and the Runner Up trophy was bagged by the School of Aeronautical Sciences; and the School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences respectively. The felicitations for the event were delivered by Dr. S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor; Dr. Pon. Ramalingam, Registrar; and Head of Student Affairs.

Fiesta ‘22 and Vibrance ‘22

The Fresher’s Talent Hunt Fiesta ‘22 and Vibrance ‘22 was conducted for the first year students of Engineering and Technology, SPADE and Liberal Arts, Applied Science, School of Management, School of Law, School of Allied Health Science on 26 November 2022 and 3 December 2022 respectively. The freshmen showcased their talents in different art forms. Nawabzada Mohammed Asif Ali Dewan to Prince of Arcot was the chief guest for Fiesta and Mr. Karthik Thirunarayanan, Director-Hybrid Cloud Systems, Oracle was the chief guest for Vibrance. Both the guests urged the students to contribute to the betterment of the society. The event was also attended by the Officials of the University.

TROPHY - ALL INDIA INTER INSTITUTION TOURNAMENT

School of Physical Education & Sports Sciences organised the Chancellor's Trophy - All India Inter Institution Tournament (Football (M), Badminton (M) Volleyball (M & W) from 3 to 5 December 2022. About 12 University

Volleyball Men's Teams, 12 University Football Men's Teams, 6 University Volleyball Women's teams, and 8 University Badminton Men's Teams from across South India participated in this prestigious tournament. Mr. Syed Sabir Pasha, Assistant Manager, Indian Bank, Former International Football Player, Coach –Chennaiyin Football Club was the Chief Guest. Mr. Mohamed Rehan, Senior Auditor, AGS Office, International Badminton Player was the Guest of Honour for the Valedictory Function held on 5 December 2022 at Bay Range Campus.

South Zone Inter University Cricket Tournament

All India Inter University Basketball Men Tournament

Hosted the prestigious South Zone Inter-University Cricket (Men) Tournament from 6 - 15 June 2022. The teams from 90 universities across the southern states participated in the tournament. HITS secured fourth place in the South Zone Inter University Cricket Men Tournament.

The Tournament hosted sixteen teams across the nation. Each team exhibited splendid competitive spirit and excellent sportsmanship. The matches were officiated by 16 referees deputed from Tamil Nadu Basketball Association. The tournament was held between 21 and 24 March 2022 at the Bay Range Campus. Winner: University of Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Runner Up: Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. Mr. V.V.R. Raj Satyen, President Tamil Nadu Rugby Association; Mr. Azez Ahamed,Secretary TNBA, Former International Basketball Player; Mr. N. Vinoth Kumar, Vice President, Bank of America, & Vice President HITSAA; Mr. Vineeth Revi Mathew, Former International Basketball Player, IOB; Mr. Akilan Pari, Current International Basketball Player; Ms. Pratibha Suriyashekar, Former Indian Captain; and Mr. C. V. Sunny, Former Indian Captainpresided over the 4-day tournament as Chief Guests. Mr. AshokVerghese, Director, HITS chaired the valedictory stage along with Mr. Jayasankar Menon, Secretary General-IBPA, Asian All Star, Former Indian Captain and honoured the winners and participants of the tournament.
