INTRODUCTION You are about to operate one of the unique productsthe Power Lifter (Model 440 WORKPRO)---on the market today. To ensure that your Power Lifter provides years of safe, dependable service, only trained and authorized persons should operate and service the Power Lifter. It is the responsibility of the operator to read , fully understand , and follow all operational and safety related instructions contained in this manual.

DO NOT operate the Power Lifter until you have read and fully understand these instructions. Remember, ALWA VS use good safety practices to protect yourself and those around you .

Important: This operators manual must remain

with the machine at all times! Should it become damaged or fost, immediately contact any authorized Compact Technologies distributor or contact the Compact Technologies Service Parts Department at (800) 643-5077 or (701) 742-3284 for replacement. Compact Technologies also recommends that the engine manufacturer Owner's Manual be kept with the machine. Failure to follow engine manufacturer's recommendations may affect engine warranty.

PRELIMINARY CHECK-NEW VEHICLE Have a qualified mechanic check a new vehicle out to determine whether or not it has been damaged in shipment. Any damage should be immediately reported to the transportation company.

OPERATOR TRAINING REQUIREMENT Train every operator before operating this or any materials handling veh icle. Training must include a study of acceptable operating practices and actual supervised driving expe rience. Operator knowledge includes familiarity with all ope rating instructions before attempting to operate the vehicle.

PRE-OPERATION CHECK ../ Check the hydraulic oil level. ../ Check the engine oil level with the vehicle on a level surface and the engine stopped. ../ If vehicle is equipped with a battery, check to determine that the battery is adeq uately charged, properly installed, and connected . ../ Check fuel level in gas tank.

OPERATING RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS

• Operate this vehicle from the driver's position after assuring that the operation will not endanger the driver or any others.

• DO NOT operate this vehicle in hazardous areas.

DECALS • The decals on the vehicle provide instructions for safe and correct operation.

• NEVER make modifications affecting safe operation or capacity without the expressed approval of Compact Technologies.

• When Compact Technologies approved modifications are made, the user is responsible for seeing that appropriate decals and operating instructions are changed.

• All plates and decals must be in place and legible at all times.

SAFETY PRACTICES Read and Observe all Warnings Before operating this vehicle.

The brake lever should be checked before each operation. The vehicle should not be operated if the brake does not firmly stop vehicle movement.

REFUELING SAFETY • NEVER smoke near the vehicle during refueling.

• DO NOT permit anyone to be on the vehicle during refueling.

• Spilled fuel must be wiped away or let evaporate before starting the engine.

• Make sure the fuel cap is in place before starting

the engine.

OPERATOR QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

• NEVER use an open flame when checking the fuel level in the tank.

OPERATOR QUALIFICATIONS

• NEVER fill the fuel tank with the engine running.

Make sure you have adequate ventilation during fueling.

• Only trained and authorized operators shall be permitted to use this vehicle.

• DO NOT operate the vehicle until you fully

understand the function of all controls, how to stop, and how to start and stop the engine.

• Operators of this vehicle shall be qualified as to visual, auditory, physical, and mental ability to

operate the equipment.

OPERATOR TRAINING • An effective operator training program should

center around vehicle use, company policies, operating conditions, and vehicle type.

• This equipment requires complete training of all new operators and shall not be condensed for

those claiming previous experience.

OPTIONAL BATTERY All battery wamings included in this operator's manual are to supplement and DO NOT replace the warnings and information provided on the battery by the battery manufacturer.

When jump starting the vehicle, carefull y follow the instructions found in the JUMP STARTING PROCEDURE on page 16.

Keep sparks, flames, and lit smoking materials away from battery at all times. Lead acid batteries generate explosive gases. Severe chemical burns can result from improper handling of battery electrolyte. Wear safety glasses and proper protective gear when handling batteries to prevent electrolyte from coming in contact with eyes, skin or clothing.

PERSONAL CONSIDERATIONS CHEMICAL HAZARDS

Battery Electrolyte First Aid • External Contact-Fl ush with water.

EXHAUST FUMES Fumes from the engine exhaust can cause injury or death. If operating in an enclosed area, provided good ventilation 10 replace hazardous exhaust fumes with fresh air.

EXPLOSIVE FUEL Engine fuel is flammable and can cause a fire andlor an explosion. Avoid danger by keeping sparks, open flames and smoking materials away from the vehicle and fuel during refueling or fuel system servicing . Know where fire extinguishers are kept on the worksite and how to use them.

• Eyes-Flush with water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention immediately.

• Internal Contact-Drink large quantities of water.

Follow with Milk of Magnesia, beaten egg or vegetable oil. Get medical attention immediately.

IMPORTANT: In case of internal contact, DO NOT give fluids that would induce vomiting!

SAFETY PRACTICES PERSONAL SAFETY Wear all the protective clothing and personal safety devices issued to you or called for by your work conditions.

Avoid entanglement hazards. DO NOT wear clothing or jewelry that could catch on machinery.

Keep your hands, hair, feet and clothing away from moving parts. DO NOT put any part of the body between the bucket and frame pinch points.

Know the pinch points and rotating parts on the vehicle.

ALWAYS know where to get assistance in case of an emergency. Know how to use a first aid kit and fire extinguisher.

GENERAL SAFETY RULES AND PRACTICES • Safeguard the pedestrians at all times. DO NOT drive a vehicle up to anyone standing in front of a bench or other fixed object.

• DO NOT allow anyone to stand or pass under the elevated portion of any vehicle, whether loaded or empty.

• If a fuel leak is found , DO NOT operate the vehicle until the problem is fixed.

• DO NOT modify or alter or permit anyone to modify or alter this vehicle or any of its components.

Important: NEVER make repairs or adjustments unless you are authorized to do so.

• DO NOT continue to operate the vehicle if an unsafe condition is found. Stop the vehicle and report the condition to the supervisor.

• Unauthorized people shall not be permitted to use the vehicle.

• DO NOT allow anyone to ride on the vehicle.

• The Power Lifter forks and mast are NOT designed for elevating or carrying personnel.

DO NOT attempt to use the vehicle for this purpose.

• DO NOT put any part of the body between the columns of the mast.

STARTING SAFETY Before Starting the Engine .. .

Important: Warn all others in the area that you are going to start the Power Lifter.

1. Assure that the clutch lever is in the neutral position.

2.

Check around the vehicle and make sure all personnel are clear.

3.

Apply the hand brake and lock the handle assembly using the brake link.

Important: NEVER leave the vehicle in NEUTRAL when the operator is NOT at the controls.

In NEUTRAL -direction control is straight back-this vehicle is free wheeling. It!lliiY. begin moving.

• Maintain a safe distance from the edge of docks and platforms when operating.

• DO NOT use this vehicle to move freight cars.

• Care shall be taken that overhead installations such as lights, power lines, pipes, sprinkler systems, etc. are not contacted.

• DO NOT use this vehicle in explosion and fire hazardous locations.

OPERATOR SAFETY

• Report all accidents involving personnel. building structures, and equipment to the proper authorities.

Power Lifter operators shall abide by the following rules and practices.

• Fire aisles, access to stairways and fire equipment shall be kept clear.

SAFETY PRACTICES SAFETY-VEHICLES LEFT UNATTENDED Note:

Note:

The vehicle is considered attended when the operator is less than 25 feet (7,60 m) from the vehicle and the vehicle remains in the operator's view.

This vehicle is considered attended when the operator is 25 feet (7,60 m) or more from the vehicle and the vehicle is in the operator's view, or whenever the vehicle is not in the operator's view.

• DO NOT pass another vehicle traveling in the same direction at intersections, blind spots or at other dangerous locations.

• When traveli ng over inclines. slopes or ramps: 1.

DO NOT park the vehicle on an incline and leave it unattended.

2.

Reduce engine speed and travel slowly and cautiously.

3.

Driving across a slope is dangerous, as unexpected changes in the slope can cause tipover. Ascend or descend slopes slowly and with caution. Travel straight up and down the slope.

• Before leaving the vehicle attended:

1.

Stop vehicle.

2.

Lower the bucket onto the frame.

3.

Tum off power.

4.

ALWAYS pari< across a slope.

OPERATION SAFETY Important: Thoroughly read and understand this entire manual. Follow all safety rules and practices explained in this manual.

• Safe operation is the responsibility of the operator.

• Improper use of the vehicle can lead to dangerous situations for yourself, those around you, the vehicle, and the work area. You must have safe working habits and be aware of hazardous working conditions.

• The vehicle must be maintenance checked every day or at the start of each shift.

• If operating in an enclosed or partially enclosed environment, make sure there is enough ventilation. Engine exhaust fumes can be deadly to you and those around you if precautions are not taken. Questions about the air quality in the working environment and sampling methods should be directed 10 a qualified person.

TRAVELING

• These vehicles are designed for level floor operation.

Note:

The rear of this vehicle is normally considered the heavy end unless the bucket is fully loaded. In this case the front of the vehicle is now the heavy end.

Ascend or descend slopes with the heavy end (bUCket) pointing up the slope.

5.

Unloaded vehicle should be operated on all slopes with the bucket pointing down the stope.

• On all terrain , operate this vehicle at speeds that will permit stopping in a safe manner.

• Travel with forks or loaded forks low to the ground.

DO NOT elevate the load except during picking or stacking.

• This vehicle is designed for level floor operation.

• Make starts, stops, turns, or direction reversals in a smooth manner to avoid shifting the load and/or risk possible vehicle tipover.

• DO NOT indulge in stunt driving or horseplay.

• Slow down for wet and slippery conditions.

• Avoid running over loose objects on the ground.

• Steer the vehicle to safely avoid vehicle contact with objects.

• Observe all traffic regulations including authorized speed limits. Under normal traffic conditions , keep to the right. Maintain a safe distance, based on speed of travel, and keep the vehicle under control at all times.

• Yield the right of way to pedestrians, ambulances, fire trucks, or other vehicles in emergency situations.

SAFETY PRACTICES LOADING Important: Ensure that the vehicle has the correct tire pressure---65 psi (449 kPa).

• Have a level vehicle when loading.

• Handle only stable and properly arranged toads.

When handling off.-center loads which cannot be centered, operate with extra caution .

• Handle only loads within the capacity of the vehicle as rated on the mast serial plate.

• Handle long and wide loads---loads exceeding the dimensions used to establish vehicle capacity with extra caution. Stability and maneuverability may be adversely affected.

• ALWAYS haul wide loads at the center of gravity.

• When attachments a re used, extra care shall be taken in securing, manipulating, positioning and transporting the load. Operate vehicles equi pped with attachments as partially loaded vehicles when not handling a load.

• The handling of suspended loads, by means of a crane arm (boom) or other device, can introduce dynamic forces affecting the stabil ity of a vehicle that are not considered in the stabi lity cri teria.

Sudden starts, stops, and tums can cause the load to swing and create a personnel and a load tip safety hazard.

• The following precautions shall be taken when handling suspended loads: 1.

DO NOT exceed the vehicle manufacturers' load rating of the vehicles equipped for handling suspended loads.

2.

The load shall only be lifted vertically and NEVER dragged horizontally.

OPERATOR CARE OF THE VEHICLE

ACAUTION If, during pre·operation inspection or operation, the vehicle is found to be in need of repair or in any way unsafe, or contributes to an unsafe condition to the operator. the matter shall be reported immediately to the designated authority, and the vehicle shall not be operated until it has been restored to proper operating condition. DO NOT make repairs or adjustments unless specifically authorized to do so.

• Before operating the vehicle, check its condition, giving attention to the following: 1.

Tires---6S psi (449 kPa).

2.

Engi ne Oil Level.

3.

Use the sight gauge to check the hydraulic oil level at the start of each day or before each shift. The sight gauge is accessed by raising the engine housing cover.

4.

Steering Mechanism.

5.

Uft and Tilt Controls.

6.

Uft systems including columns, lift frame, forks, chains, cables, and hydraulic hoses.

ACAUTION To avoid tipping load or load loss, transport loads with the forks and the mast as low as possible.

3.

The load shall be transported with the bottom of the load and the lift frame as low as possible.

4.

Maneuvering the vehicle with load elevated shall be done slowly and cautiously and only to the extent necessary to permit lowering load to the lowest possible transport position.

CONTROLS

AWARNING Serious injury can occur to operator if full throttle is applied in reverse and vehicle overtakes operator who is unsuspecting and is walking backwards too slowly. ALWAYS exerci se caution and good judgement and run vehicle at less than full throttle in reverse. Operation of the vehicle at full throttle in reverse should only be attempted after complete familiarity with travel speeds of the vehicle.

CHOKE Located immediately below the air cleaner. The choke is open when lever is right. The choke is closed when lever is in the left position.

STARTER SWITCH

The controls consist of a (an): • Th rottle Control.

• Choke.

• ON-OFF switch on engine (OFF,ON,START positions) .

• Direction Control, Shift Control.

• Steering control.

• Lift and tilt load controls.

• Fuel valve.

THROTTLE Located on the lett hand side of the steering and direction control lever. Moving the lever down opens the throttle. Moving the lever up reduces throttle.

Located on engine-right hand end of engine compartment-between and to the right of the gas tank and the pull start. Using electric starter: Tum the engine switch to the START position (clockwise) and hold it there until the engine starts. When the engine starts, allow the engine switch to retum to the ON position . To stop the engine tum the switch to the OFF position.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a battery. Move the switch to the ON position to start the engine. Then , pull the recoil starter after activating the switch to the ON position. To stop the engine tum the switch to the OFF position.

CONTROLS FUEL VALVE

Note:

In FORWARD and REVERSE you may shift from Position (2) to Position (1) or

Position (2) to Position (3) by rotating the

Handle Grips in the direction of the arrow shown in the illustration above.

• FORWARD: Vehicle movement is controlled by the combination of engine speed and shifting control position. Shifting from Position (2) to Position (1) controls vehicle movement FORWARD. You must keep hold the SHIFTING CONTROL in Position (1) to continue to travel FORWARD.

Located below the choke and air cleaner. Turn the lever to the left to shut off fuel. Tum the lever to the right to tum fuel on. Shut the fuel off when the vehicle is not in use.

• REVERSE: Vehicle movement is controlled by the combination of engine speed and shifting control position. Shifting from Position (2) to Position (3) enables the vehicle to move in REVERSE. You must keep holding the SHIFTING CONTROL in Position (3) to continue to travel in REVERSE. Important: Shift into NEUTRAL with the engine running at a fow idle. At low idle the engine speed will not cause the shift to jerk the vehicle as the shift control passes through

• STOP : Position (2) is vehicle STOP. Start the engine or park the vehicle with the handle in the STOP Position (2), straight up. To stabilize the vehicle that is stopped it is suggested that the operator turn the drive wheels 90 0 to the left or right.

The handle just to the right of the steering handle controls tilting of the load.

The lines should be moved, insulated, disconnected, or de-energized and grounded before operating in the area. Keep all parts of the vehicle at least 10 feet away from power lines .

When these conditions cannot be avoided, keep the load as low as possible and travel vel}' slowly and with extreme caution.

Know where there are any blind comer conditions on the worksite. Before turning a blind comer, stop, and proceed slowly.

BEFORE OPERATING THE VEHICLE AL WA VS maintain safe distances between your Power Lifter and other equipment that may be on the worksite.

Know the weights of all loads you may be expected to transport before attempting to lift them. Avoid loads of loose material if possible. Check that loads are properly banded or strapped together.

PROTECT YOURSELF Wear all the protective clothing and personal safety devices issued to you or called for by job conditions.

You may need: • A hard hat.

Insure that adequate clearance is provided between both rear tail swing and front fork swing of the Power Lifter to avoid injury to personnel or damage to nearby equipment.

• Safety shoes.

Important: NEVER turn or park the Power Lifter on a slope or incline as this is a dangerous, potential tipover condition.

• Hearing protection .

Know where you will be expected to park your Power Lifter at the end of the work day. Lower the attachment to the ground, turn ignition to OFF, remove the key, and block the wheels.

• Wet weather gear.

• Safety glasses, goggles, or face shield.

• Heavy gloves.

• Reflective clothing .

• Respirator or filter mask.

Remember...

• Be alert-know that conditions can change.

• Use common sense-show that you are a responsible operator.

• Be a defensive operator-prevent accidents before they happen.

SAFE VEHICLE OPERATION For safe operation of this Power Ufter you must be a qualified and authorized operator. To be qualified, you must understand the written instructions supplied by the manufacturer, have training (including actual operation of this vehicle) and know the safety rules and regulations for the worksite.

An operator must not use drugs or alcohol which can affect his alertness and coordination. An operator on prescription or over-the-counter drugs needs medical approval to safely operate these vehicles.

KNOW THE RULES Most employers have rules governing proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Before you start work at a new location, check with your supervisor or the safety coordinator. Ask about rules you may be expected to obey.

Make sure you understand the rules covering traffic at your worksite. Make sure you recognize and understand the meaning of all signs, flags, and markings. Make sure you understand all hand , flag, whistle, siren, or bell signals.

OPERATION Read and Observe All Warnings Before operating this vehicle.

FUEL

Before starting. be sure all preliminary service is done and that you are familiar with the controls and know how to stop the vehicle.

OPERATOR QUALIFICATIONS Only trained and authorized operators shall be permitted to operate this vehicle. Operators of this vehicle shall be qualified as to visual , auditory, physical, and mental ability to operate the vehicle.

Move the choke lever to the CLOSE position. See the illustration below.

Note:

OPERATOR TRAINING An effective operator training program should center around user company's policies, operating conditions, and vehicle type. The program should be presented completely to all new operators and not condensed for those claiming previous experience.

The choke may not be needed if the engine is warm or the air temperature is high.

STOPPING THE VEHICLE • Set SHIFTING CONTROL in STOP position (lever straight up position).

• Push the lift control forward and lower the lift frame to the bottom of the mast.

ACAUTION • DO NOT crank engine continuously for more than 5 seconds at a time or starter motor damage may occur.

• A 60 second cool down period must be allowed between cranking attempts if the engine does not start. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in bum-out of the starter motor.

• In the event of false start, that is, if the engine develops sufficient speed to disengage the starter, but fails to continue running, the engine must be allowed to come to a complete stop before a restart attempt is made. (If starter is engaged while flywheel is still rotating, the starter pinion and flywheel ring gear may clash, resulting in damage to the starter.)

OPERATION JUMP STARTING PROCEDURE (FOR VEHICLE WITH A DEAD BATTERY)

ACAUTION • Improper jump starting procedures can cause

an explosion resulting in personal injury.

• Sparks near batteries can cause explosions • DO NOT allow jump cable ends to touch each other or the vehicle.

• Battery acid can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes. ALWAYS wear eye protection when jump starting a ve hicle.

• ALWAYS connect battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and battery negative (- ) to battery negative (-).

• This vehicle has a 12 volt starting system.

Use the same voltage (12 volts) for jump starting. Use of higher voltage can damage the electrical system.

• NEVER charge a frozen battery.

• Move the boost start vehicle (or auxiliary power source) close enough to the stalled vehicle for the cables to reach without allowing the vehicles to touch.

• On the stalled vehicle, place the vehicle Direction ControllShifting Control into STOP and tum the

ignition switch to OFF. • Unlatch engine compartment cover. Lift and prop

open cover.

• Connect the positive (+) jumper cable to the positive (+) cable terminal of the discharged battery on the stalled vehicle. To expose the battery post and cable clamp lift the rubber boot and slide it off the battery clamp and onto the battery cable.

Ensure a solid connection. DO NOT allow positive cable clamps to touch ANYTHING other than the positive battery terminal.

• Connect the other end of the positive (+) jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the boost battery (or auxiliary power source).

• Connect one end of the negative (-) jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boost battery (or auxiliary power source).

• Make the final connection of the negative (-) jumper cable to the frame of the stalled vehicle away from the battery, fuel tank, hydraulic lines, and moving parts.

• Turn the ignition switch of the disabled vehicle to ON.

• Start the engine on the boost vehicle or energize the auxiliary power source .

• Wait at least two minutes for the battery in the stalled vehicle to partially charge.

• Attempt to start the stalled vehicle.

• Immediately remove the negative cable from the frame of the weak battery vehicle after the engine starts. Then, remove the positive cable from the battery.

• Remove prop from cover; lower cover and snap the two cover latches.

TO OPERATE

AWARNING • Before starting the engine and attempting to operate the vehicle for the first time, review the warnings and controls section of this manual. Know how to stop travel of the vehicle if you are an inexperienced operator.

• Operation of the vehicle at full throttle should only be attempted after complete familiarity with all operations. ALWAYS exercise caution and good judgment w hile running this equipment.

• Let engine warm up before placing under load .

• Open throttle about 1/4 of the way. With both hands grasping the handles, rotating the wrists up produces travel forward. Rotating the wrists downward produces travel backward. Stop is achieved when the shift control is straight up. The directional control assembly, when no force is applied, is spring loaded to default into the STOP (stop travel) position when you are in either FORWARD or REVERSE.

OPERATION • Drive motor in STOP is the brake on this vehicle.

When the d ri ve motor stops turning the single rear drive wheel axle leaves the wheel capable of rolling about 1IB-tum.

• In an emergency, the vehicle can be stopped by reversing the direction of the drive motor.

• To shut engine off push throttle control (located on the engine) toward front of vehicle and turn engine switch to OFF (counterclockwise).

T o keep a balanced load distribution , position forks equal distances from the outer edges of lift frame.

• Lower lift frame to the bottom of the mast.

• To change height of forks or to change fork types, remove hairpin cotter reusable pins from ends of fork shaft and pull fork shaft out of lift frame and forks.

• Insert fork shaft into new hole and through upper end of forks. Center fork shaft and attach linchpin at each end. See the illustration below.

OPERATION HANDLING THE LOAD WHEN PICKING UP THE LOAD...

• If possible, plan to load, unload, and turn on flat, level ground. If not level it is NOT recommended to use this vehicle to pick up a load. There is danger of tipping the load if the load is raised.

• Be sure there is enough clearance overhead and all around for lifting and traveling. Watch the front and side clearances when tu rni ng.

• If loads are not on pallets and are to be handled several times, place stacking blocks under loads.

• Slide the forks to the widest position on the fork shaH or the widest position of the pallet. ALWAYS center the forks in the lift mast. 00 NOT attempt to use the forks in an offset manner as lifting the load may cause the vehicle to tip.

• Inspect load to be lifted. Approach the load slowly and squarely with fork tips straight and level. If necessary, adjust pallet forks. Travel slowly forward and engage load. Position the load equally on both forks. Travel forward until load touches the lift frame.

• Tilt the forks back to position the load for travel , then lift the load only enough to clear obstacles.

Avoid erratic stops. Be sure there is sufficient clearance overhead and around for lifting and traveling.

AWARNING When traveling over inclines, slopes or ramps ...

• Tilt the attachment back and raise only enough to clear the ground.

• Avoid turning.

• Proceed slowly and with extreme caution.

• Travel straight up and down the grade.

• When loaded and traveling up or down grades, travel with the load uphill.

• Travel with the attachment downhill when unloaded.

• Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury or death.

• Avoid driving over loose objects and holes in roadway surfaces to prevent losing the load o r tipping the vehicle.

• Avoid crossing ditches, curbs or exposed railroad tracks. If crossing cannot be avoided, keep the load as low as possible, travel very slowly, and proceed with caution.

• Avoid panic stopping to prevent toppling the load.

TRANSPORT THE LOAD SAFELY WHEN TRANSPORTING THE LOAD.. .

• Keep the forks tilted back and the load close to the ground.

• Slow down for turns, ramps, dips, uneven or slippery surfaces and in congested areas.

• Keep the load as low as possible. Carry the load no higher than necessary to clear ground obstructions.

• Where the load wi ll obstruct the operator's vision, it is recommended that the vehicle be operated in REVERSE , looking backwards in the direction of travel. Travel at a slower speed and get someone to direct you.

• Avoid excessively steep slopes or unstable surfaces. If you must d ri ve on a slope, keep the load low and proceed with extreme caution. DO NOT, under any circumstances, drive across excessively steep slopes.

SAFELY PLACING THE LOAD ELEVATED OR OVERHEAD PLACEMENT...

Important: When stacking or placing a load to a high landing use extreme caution! There may be other workers in the immediate area you cannot see. Make sure that all bystanders are away from the area where the load could tip or fall.

• Before lifting a load to an elevated or overhead placement make certain that the vehicle maximum, safe lifting height is not exceeded .

• Be sure the landing point can safely support the weight of the load. The chosen landing location should be level , both front-to-back and side-to-side. You should know or be able to estimate the weight and load center of the load that you will be lifting. If you are unsure of the weight and load center of the load, check with your supervisor or with the supplier of the material.

OPERATION • Drive as close as possible to the landing location.

Check for clearance of front frame assembly and wheels. Approach very slowly with the load as low as possible. It is possible that ground clearance may be inadequate to drive close enough to safely lower the load. 00 NOT attempt to place the load under such conditions.

• The inner and outer masts may not extend high enough to safely place the load. DO NOT attempt to place the load under such conditions.

• DO NOT raise the load for placement if the forks are tilted to one side. If the vehicle cannot be positioned so the load is level before lifting, reposition the vehicle. The likelihood for vehicle overturn is greatly increased if the load is not level before lifting.

• Slowly and carefully raise the load. If there is any indication of instability during the lift (such as movement, leaning, swaying), stop immediately, lower the load, move the vehicle to a more stable, level position. As lift height increases, your depth perception decreases. Placing the load safely at a high elevation may require signaling by a second person.

• When the load is slightly higher than the landing point, SLOWLY stop the lift.

AWARNING DO NOT ram the hyd raulic lift cylinder to the end of its stroke. The jolt could spill the load resulting in death or serious injury.

• If there is any indication that the landing point cannot handle the weight of the load, pick the load back up, lower it to the ground and lift a lighter load.

• Lower the load slowly to place it and relieve the weight from the forks. Slowly back away from the load and stop to lower the forks BEFORE moving the vehicle.

• The vehicle can now be moved from the landing location to continue work.

• Check the hydraulic oil tank level at the start of each day or before each shift. The hydraulic tank mounted sight gauge is located inside the engine compartment. Hydraulic oil must reach a height half way up in the sight gauge.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS • Maintenance described in this section represents minimum requirements for continuous satisfactory operation of the vehicle.

• Because improperly maintained vehicles are hazardous, it is extremely important that only qualified mechanics periorm maintenance work.

• It is imperative that only genuine Compact Technologies parts are used if replacement is needed as substituted parts in critical areas may place the operator at risk.

• It is recommended that a regular maintenance schedule be followed for electrical and mechanical adjustments as well as for lubrication.

• Use a preventive maintenance program to catch and correct many serious problems before they occur. The preventive maintenance schedule contained herein gives a daily, weekly, monthly, semiannually, annually, and break-in 100 hours minimum requirement to keep your vehicle running for years. The lubrication chart contained herein is one part of vehicle preventive maintenance.

• Because regular maintenance cannot be controlled by the manufacturer or by the distributor, it must ultimately be the responsibility of the owner.

• Your distributor stands ready to assist in the event of operational difficulties. However, most adjustments andlor repair can be readily periormed by the user.

• 00 NOT check electrolyte level in optional battery or check fuel level in tank in the presence of open flames, spark sources, or lighted smoking materials.

• The instructions provided in this section will facilitate the maintenance of this vehicle to operate at peak efficiency.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE HYDRAULIC PUMP Hydraulic pumps DO NOT requi re periodic maintenance. They are, however, dependent on the care given to the rest of the system. Contamination, low hydraulic ail level, restricted oil passages, or faulty or imprope rl y adjusted relief valves can all cause p remature pump failure.

Du ring the daily maintenance inspection, examine the pump for signs of leakage. With the engine running, listen for un usual pump noise that could indicate pump cavitation o r overheating.

HYDRAULIC VALVES Hyd raul ic valves DO NOT require periodic maintenance othe r than checking for leakage and proper operation. If a pressure relief valve is suspected of operating improperly it may be necessary to pe rform service on the valve.

AWARNING CONTINUED •.• • Be careful not to spill fuel when refueling .

Spilled fuel or fuel vapor may ignite or can explode.

• If any fuel is spilled, make sure the area is wiped dry before starting the engine.

• Stop engine before refueling.

• Use a clean, fresh grade of unleaded , regular gasoline with a pump octane rating or 86 or higher.

(Unleaded gasoline lowers emission of the air pollutants and results in a reduction of engine combustion deposits.)

• Fuel the engine at the start of the day.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS AND FUELING THE VEHICLE

Important: DO NOT fuel above the shoulder of the fuel strainer.

• Unlatch motor compartment cover. Lift and prop open cover.

AWARNING • Explosion hazard .

• Gasoline is extrem ely flammable and is explos ive under ce rtain conditions.

• Remove fuel fille r cap .

Note:

Add fuel using a funnel to avoid gasoline spills into engine compartment. Fuels can damage paint and plastic. Be careful not to spill fuel when filling the fuel tank. Damage caused by spilled fuel is not covered under warranty.

• To avoid death, blindness, or personal injury refuel in a well ventilated area with the engine stopped.

• Fill tank with fuel.

• DO NOT smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area where the en gine is fu eled or where gasoline is stored.

• Remove prop from cover; lower cover, and snap the two cover latches.

• Remove funnel and replace fuel filler cap.

• Wipe up any fuel spills if you have any.

• NEVER refuel the vehic le while the engine is running or when engine is hot.

• After fueling, make sure the tank cap is closed. A fire and explosion hazard exists when a fuel tank has no cap on during operation. NEVER operate engine without fuel tank cap in place.

AWARNING NEVER use gasoline or low flash point solvents for cleaning the air cleaner element. A fire or explosion could result.

ACAUTION NEVER run the engine without the air cleaner. Rapid engine wear will result from contaminants, such as dust and dirt being drawn into the engine. Stop engine before replacing the air filter.

Note:

A dirty air cleaner will restrict air flow to the carburetor. To prevent carburetor malfunction, service the air cleaner regularly. Service more frequently when operating the engine in extremely dusty

conditions.

CLEANING FOAM ELEMENT DETAILS (DAILY OR 10 HOUR INTERVALS WHEN OPERATING IN DUSTY AREA OR EVERY 3 MONTHS OR EVERY 50 HOURS) • Wash the foam element in a solution of household detergent and warm water. Then, rinse thoroughly removing all soap and squeeze out excess water; DO NOT wring. Allow the element to dry thoroughly.

• Soak the element in clean engine oil, and squeeze out the excess oil. (Use paper towel or similar absorbent tissue to blot/squeeze out excess oil.)

Note:

The engine wilf smoke during initial startup if too much oil is left in the foam.

PAPER ELEMENT DETAILS (EVERY 3 MONTHS OR 50 HOURS, SERVICE MORE FREQUENTLY WHEN OPERATING IN DUSTY AREA): • Remove foam element from paper element.

• Clean the foam element following the CLEANING FOAM ELEMENT DETAILS above, page 25.

• Tap the element lightly several times on a hard surface to remove excess dirt, or blow compressed air through the filter from the inside out. NEVER try to brush the dirt off; brushing will force dirt into the fibers. Replace the paper element if it is excessively dirty.

• When dirty or damaged, replace with the correct part number filter element. Carefully handle new element. DO NOT use a new element if the surfaces are damaged.

• Install new filter by performing the removal steps in reverse order.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE CHANGING AIR FILTER-PAPER AND FOAM ELEMENTS (EVERY YEAR OR 300 HOUR INTERVALS, SERVICE MORE FREQUENTLY WHEN OPERATING IN DUSTY AREA): • Remove the wing nut and the air cleaner cover.

CHANGING ENGINE OIL (FIRST MONTH OR 20 HOURS OF USE), (EVERY 6 MONTHS OR 100 HOUR INTERVALS THEREAFTER) Note:

Power Lifter must be on a level surlace when changing and checking oil.

Note:

Drain the oil while the engine is still warm from operation-if flows freely and carries away more impurities.

• Remove the dirty paper and foam element

assembly.

• Soak the new foam element in clean engine oil and squeeze out the excess oil. The engine will smoke during initial start-up if too much oil is left in the foam.

• SAE 10W30 is recommended for general, all·temperature use.

• Install new foam element over the paper filter.

• Install paper and foam filter assembly into air cleaner base .

AMBIENT TEMPERATURE

ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK (DAILY OR 10 HOUR INTERVALS) • ALWAYS check the dipstick before using the vehicle. At a minimum check engine oil once per day. Follow the preventive Maintenance Schedule contained herein.

• ALWAYS use a good quality engine oil. Refer to the engine manufacturer's instruction book for specific instructions not contained herein.

• The engine oil fill is at the rear of the vehicle.

Unscrew oil fill cap/dipstick and remove.

• Wipe dipstick. Install cap/dipstick to measure oil level.

Viscosities shown in the chart above may be used when the average temperature in your area is within the indicated range.

• Place oil pan on ground below drain oil plug.

• Loosen drain oil plug (located to the lower left of engine when facing pull start on engine).

• Remove oil drain plug. Completely drain oil.

• Install drain plug and tighten.

• Engine oil capacity: 1.16 ql. (1, 1 Liter).

• Refill with the recommended oil and check the oil level. DO NOT overfill with oil. Install the oil fill er cap/dipstick.

• Remove cap/dipstick again and check oil level.

• Fill engine with oil. Use the same weight oil that is in the engine, NEVER mix different oil weights. Use a funnel to avoid spilling or use an oil can filled with the proper weight small engine oil and squirt oil directly into fill hole.

• Check oil level with dipstick. Fill the crank case to the full mark on the dipstick. DO NOT overfill.

• Replace cap/dipstick.

AWARNING

HYDRAULIC OIL AND FILTER HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL CHECK (DAILY OR 10 HOUR INTERVALS) Important: Move the vehicle to level ground before checking sight gauge for hydraulic oil level.

• Unlatch engine compartment cover. Lift and prop open cover.

• Hyd raulic oil must be half-way in the glass of the sight gauge.

• Remove prop from cover; lower cover and snap the two cover latches.

Sight Gauge

• Hydraulic oil under pressure can penetrate skin and is very dangerous. NEVER check for leaks with your hand.

• Hot hydraulic fluid can cause severe burns.

Wait for fluid to cool down before disconnecting lines.

• Hydraulic fluid can cause permanent eye injury. Wear appropriate eye protection.

• If hydraulic fluid is injected into the skin, seek medical attention immediately.

• Relieve pressure in the lines before disconnecting pressure lines.

• Sta rt engine and operate all hydraulic functions of the vehicle. Oil is under high pressure. DO NOT use your hand to check for leaks. Check for leaks using a piece of cardboard o r paper. Pass the piece around connectors and hoses checking for leaks.

• Check level of hydraulic oil in tank. Add oil as needed to raise oil level to proper height in the sight gauge.

• Park the vehicle and lower forks to the ground.

Stop engine.

CHANGING HYDRAULIC OIL (AT FIRST 100 HOURS OF USE).

(EVERY YEAR OR 300 HOUR INTERVALS THEREAFTER) • Engine must be OFF. • Move the travel , titt and raise levers back and forth to remove any oil pressure in system.

• Remove oil fill cap.

• Place oil pan below hydraulic hose below oil tank.

• Remove oil tank output hose at the pump and drain oil into oil pan.

• When the tank has completely drained , connect the oil reservoir hose back to the pump.

• Using SAE 1QW30 universal oil, fill the reservoir to a point where hydraulic oil rises to the half way level in the sight gauge.

• Replace oil reservoi r cap.

CHANGING HYDRAULIC OIL FILTER ELEMENT (AT FIRST 100 HOURS OF USE).

(EVERY YEAR OR 300 HOUR INTERVALS THEREAFTER) • Engine must be OFF. • The hydraulic system is under pressure whenever the engine is running and can hold pressure after the engine is shut off.

• Cycle the directional control, lift, and tilt hydraulic controls after the engine stops running to relieve trapped pressure in the lines.

• Unlatch engine compartment cover. Lift and prop open cover.

Note:

Hot hydraulic fluid can cause severe burns. Wait for fluid to cool down before removing oil filter.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE • Place drain oil pan on ground below oil filter.

• Using a large adjustable w rench or oil filter wrench, loosen filter. If oil filter is hot, wrap rags around filter and tum until off.

• Drain excess oil from filter into drain oil container.

Dispose of hydraulic oil filters by recycling the filters. Some states require certain business to take recyclable oil and oil filters. Check local recycling rules and comply with each. DO NOT throw oil filters into garbage where filter ends up in land fills.

• Wipe the oil filter assembly clean.

• Use a new filter cartridge. Apply oil film to gasket of oil filter before installing.

• Spin on oil filte r and tighten as tight as possible by hand. Follow manufacturers instruction for tightening if different from instructions herein.

WHEELS AND TIRES TIRE PRESSURE AND WEAR CHECK (DAILY OR 10 HOUR INTERVALS)

(

• Vehicle operation is dependent upon routine maintenance of the wheels and tires. Beyond repair of the tires due to damage from worksite hazards, such as nails, sharp rocks, etc. , maintain 65 psi (449 kPa) in each pneumatic tire on the vehicle .

• Foam filled tires (optional) require no pressure maintenance.

• Wipe excess oil off hoses, filter assembly, etc.

• Remove prop from cover; lower cover and snap the two cover latches.

AWARNING To avoid personal injury caused when hydraulic oil under pressure penetrates the skin, DO NOT use your hand to check for leaks. Use a piece of cardboard or paper to search for leaks.

• Start engine and run engine at low throttle. Check for leaks. After 30 seconds, run throttle to low idle.

• Operate controls. If filter leaks shut off engine.

Tighten oil filter again. Start engine. Operate controls and use cardboard again to check for leaks.

• Stop engine.

TIRE WEAR (DAILY OR 10 HOUR INTERVALS) Consult tire manufacturer for minimum tread depth required for safe operation. Replace any tire with deep cracks that are evidence of weather checking and tire age.

LIFT CHAIN ADJUSTMENT LIFT CHAIN ADJUSTMENT (EVERY 6 MONTHS OR 100 HOUR INTERVALS) Lift chains are very important components on fork vehicles. The chain system on the mast is designed for efficient, reliable transmission of lifting force from hydraulic cylinder to the forks. Safe, uninterrupted, and smooth operation of your lift vehicle depends on the proper care maintenance of the lift chains.

Adjust as follows: 1.

Loosen the locking nuts on the chain anchors.

2.

Tighten the adjusting nuts until both chains are free of twist and of equal tension. Tension is correct if you can force the lift chain sideways approximately 0 .5-1.0 inch (1,27-2,54 cm) before the lift frame raises slightly.

BATTERY CLEANING BATTERY TERMINALS AND CABLE CONNECTIONS (EVERY YEAR OR 300 HOUR INTERVALS)

AWARNING • To avoid exposure to sulfuric acid and flammable liquids which can cause blindness or injury, NEVER use fuel or flammable fluids for cleaning batteries.

• Explosive gases are produced in the charging process and can cause blindness or injury if ignited. DO NOT attempt to recharge the battery in an area of sparks, flames, or lighted smoking materials.

• DO NOT attempt to recharge a frozen battery as this may cause it to rupture or explode which may cause death, blindness, or personal injury.

• The top of the battery and battery terminals MUST be kept clean.

Note:

To avoid getting baking soda cleaning solution into the battery acid make sure that the battery is properly sealed and is level.

• Clean the battery top and battery terminal area with a brush dipped in a baking soda and water solution (one-half teaspoon to a quart of water).

• Brighten the lead surfaces of the battery posts and the battery cable connections for proper electrical connection. Connect cables to battery posts and tighten securing nuts.

BATTERY CARE (EVERY YEAR OR 300 HOUR INTERVALS)

AWARNING • Batteries contain sulfuric acid (POISON) and can cause blindness or injury. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes. ALWAYS shield eyes and wear protective clothing when working with batteries.

• Keep out of the reach of children.

• DO NOT tip battery.

• ALWAYS keep the battery sealed and leve l Note:

Since the vehicle engine is equipped with recoil start and electric start it is an option to install a battery. Battery care only applies when a battery is installed in the vehicle .

• Proper care and servicing of the battery is vital to assure satisfactory operation and life of the vehicle . Battery acid is extremely corrosive. Wash off the vehicle should any battery acid spillage occur.

• The battery should ALWAYS be kept in a full y charged condition. An overly discha rged battery will cause a number of operational difficulties in any equipment. Check the battery first if any electrical difficulty occurs.

• After the foaming has stopped, flu sh the top of the battery with clean water. Dry off battery and battery box.

• When removing battery connections, ALWAYS remove the negative (ground) cable first. If terminals and cable clamps are corroded, disconnect the cables. Scrape clamps and then clean clamps with solution of baking sod a and water. Rinse with clean water and dry.

To assure proper electrical connection at the battery perform the next item a minimum of one time per year.

A battery which does not take a proper charge should be referred to the battery manufacturer s representative for service.

Note:

• The Power Lifter uses an optional, 12 volt (Group 22F or 24F), five year, no maintenance battery or equivalent.

Since the vehicle engine is equipped with recoil start and electric start it is an option to install a battery. Battery replacement only applies when a battery is installed in the vehicle.

Note:

Replace optional battery with a 12 volt (Group 22F or 24F) battery for proper fit in the battery rack and battery clamp. The Honda engine requires a battery of at least 18 amp-hr rating.

• This vehicle may be equipped with a sealed battery, DO NOT attempt to add water. Replace any sealed battery which does not hold sufficient charge.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT (AS REQUIRED)

• Loosen negative battery clamp. Remove negative battery cable.

• Loosen positive battery clamp. Remove positive battery cable.

• Remove battery from battery bracket.

• Place new battery in battery bracket-positive battery post toward front of the vehicle.

ADANGER To avoid spark and explosion hazard when disconnecting battery cabl e connectors, ALWAYS remove the negative (ground) cabl e first. This equipment uses gasoline and hydraulic oil. Gasoline can explode and burn . Hydraulic oil can burn. These explosion and combustion properties can cause death or personal injury.

TOWING TOWING A DISABLED VEHICLE

AWARNING If vehicle is disabled it must be properly set up for towing. Incorrectly towing the vehicle will damage the hydraulics. If you DO NOT follow towing precautions, the vehicle can move out of control and can cause personal injury.

Important: The vehicle can move out of control when the Direction Control/Shift Control is in the N EUTRAL position. When the vehicle is set up for towing, put blocks at the front and rear of the wheels of the disabled vehicle. Remove blocks after towing vehicle is connected to the disabled vehicle.

• If the vehicle becomes disabled, ALWAYS transport on a truck bed or trailer. Stop transporting truck or trailer as close as possible to the disabled vehicle.

• Apply the transporting vehicles parking b rake.

• Put blocks at the front and rear of the transporting vehicles wheels.

• Place blocks at the front and rear of the disabled vehicles wheels.

• Shift the Direction Control/Shifting Control into NEUTRAL. • Attach a second vehicle to rear of the disabled vehicle . Remove wheel blocks from the disabled vehicle.

Important: DO NOT move disabled vehicle faster than 1 mph (1,6 kmlhr). Damage to the hydrostatic drive motors can occur at higher speeds. NEVER tow the vehicle farther than 50 feet (15 mi.

• Tow the disabled vehicle onto the truck bed or trailer.
