GEHL NEW AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT RECTANGULAR BALER WARRANTY GEHL AGRICULTURE DIVISION of the GEHL COMPANY, hereinafter referred to as Gehl, warrants new Gehl Rectangular Balers and attachments, to the Original Retail Purchaser to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months {ninety (90) days for commercial/custom use} from the Warranty Start Date.

GEHL AGRICULTURE WARRANTY INCLUDES: Genuine Gehl parts and labor costs required to repair or replace equipment at the selling dealer’s business location.

GEHL MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED (INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR PARTICULAR PURPOSE), EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY STATED IN THIS WARRANTY STATEMENT.

GEHL WARRANTY DOES NOT INCLUDE: 1.

Transportation to selling dealer’s business location or, at the option of the Original Retail Purchaser, the cost of a service call.

2.

Used equipment.

3.

Components covered by their own non-Gehl warranties, such as tires, trade accessories and engines.

4.

Normal maintenance service and expendable, high wear items.

5.

Repairs or adjustments caused by: improper use; non–intended use; failure to follow recommended maintenance procedures; use of unauthorized attachments; accident or other casualty.

6.

Liability for incidental or consequential damages of any type, including, but not limited to lost profits or expenses of acquiring replacement equipment.

No agent, employee or representative of Gehl has any authority to bind Gehl to any warranty except as specifically set forth herein. Any of these limitations excluded by local law shall be deemed deleted from this warranty; all other terms will continue to apply.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing this piece of Gehl equipment.

We are sure that your decision was strongly considered and that you are looking forward to many years of work from this machine.

We, as a Company, have invested a great deal of time and effort in developing our lines of equipment. The equipment you have purchased is built with a great deal of pride and designed to give you long life, efficient operation, durability and dependability.

This manual was developed specifically for the machine you have purchased. The information within is for your assistance in preparing, adjusting, maintaining and servicing your machine. More importantly, this manual provides an operating plan for safe and proper use of your machine. Major points of safe operation are detailed in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Refer to the Table of Contents for an outline (by chapters) of this manual. Use the Index, located at the back of this manual, for specific chapter and topic page number references. A chart depicting standard hardware torques is located on the inside back cover.

A Manual Pocket is provided on this unit (inside the Twinebox) for storing the Operator’s Manual. After using the Manual, please return it to the Pocket and keep it with the unit at all times! Furthermore, if this machine is resold, Gehl Company recommends that this Manual be given to the new owner.

Modern machinery has become more sophisticated and, with that in mind, Gehl Company asks that you read and understand the contents of this manual COMPLETELY and become familiar with your new machine, BEFORE attempting to operate it.

The Gehl dealer organization stands ready to provide you with any assistance you may require and carries genuine Gehl service parts. All parts should be obtained from or ordered through your Gehl Dealer. Give complete information about the part and include the model and serial numbers of your machine. Record the serial number in the space provided on the pictorial, as a handy record for quick reference.

‘‘Right’’ and ‘‘left’’ are determined from a position standing behind the unit and facing forward. From this position, the Pickup is on the “right” and the Flywheel and Bale-forming Chamber are on the ‘‘left’’.

SAFETY The above Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! It stresses an attitude of ‘‘Heads Up for Safety’’ and can be found throughout this Operator’s Manual and on the machine itself.

BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS EQUIPMENT, READ AND STUDY THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INFORMATION. IN ADDITION, MAKE SURE THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO OPERATES OR WORKS WITH THIS EQUIPMENT, WHETHER FAMILY MEMBER OR EMPLOYEE, IS FAMILIAR WITH THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Our Company ALWAYS takes the operator and his/her safety into consideration when designing its machinery and guards exposed moving parts for his/her protection.

However, some areas can NOT be guarded or shielded in order to assure proper operation. In addition, this Operator’s Manual and Decals, on the machine, warn of further danger and should be read and observed closely.

MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE BEFORE unclogging, cleaning, adjusting, lubricating or servicing the unit: 1.

Disengage the tractor PTO.

2.

Shut off the tractor engine, remove the starter switch key and take it with you.

3.

Wait for all movement to stop.

4.

Remove the Telescoping PTO Drive and ALL power connections from the tractor.

ONLY when you have taken these precautions can you be sure it is safe to proceed. Failure to follow the above procedure, could lead to death or serious bodily injury.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY REMINDERS Some photographs, used in this manual, may show Doors, Guards and Shields open or removed for illustration purposes ONLY. BE SURE that all Doors, Guards and Shields are in their proper operating positions BEFORE starting the tractor engine to operate the unit.

ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding use of a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on public highways. BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations.

Only a safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machine(s), in the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

ALWAYS wear safety glasses with side shields when striking metal against metal. It is further recommended that a softer (non-chipable) material be used to cushion the blow. Failure to heed could lead to serious injury to the eye(s) or other parts of the body.

SAFETY (Continued) Good safety practice dictates that you NEVER tow an implement (without brakes), unless towing vehicle weighs at least one-and-one half (1-1/2) times the weight of the towed implement and its load. For any public highway travel and to be in compliance with this rule, BE SURE that your tractor is heavy enough to counterbalance the weight of the Baler and loaded wagon.

Our Company does NOT sell replacement tires. In addition, tire mounting, service or inflation can be dangerous. Whenever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires, following the tire manufacturer’s instruction. If you do NOT have such instructions, contact your tire dealer or our Company. In any event, to avoid possible fatal or serious injury, follow the specific directive given in the Service

chapter of this manual.

DO NOT allow anyone to ride on the Baler.

NEVER use your hands to search for hydraulic fluid leaks, use a piece of paper or cardboard. Escaping fluid under pressure can be invisible and can penetrate the skin and cause a serious injury. If any fluid is injected into your skin, see a doctor at once. Injected fluid MUST be surgically removed by a doctor familiar with this type of injury or gangrene may result.

To ensure continued safe operation, replace damaged or worn-out parts with genuine Gehl service parts, BEFORE attempting to operate this equipment.

REMEMBER, it is the owner’s responsibility for communicating information on the safe use and proper maintenance of this machine.

CHAPTER 5 CONTROLS & SAFETY EQUIPMENT GUARDS, DOORS & SHIELDS

CAUTION Become familiar with and know how to use ALL safety devices and controls on this machine BEFORE attempting to operate the unit. Know how to stop machine operation BEFORE starting it.

Miscellaneous Guards & Shields (Figs. 3 & 4) Whenever possible and without affecting machine operation, Guards, Shields and/or hinged Covers have been used on this equipment to protect potentially hazardous areas. In many places, Decals are also provided to warn of potential dangers as well as to display special operating procedures.

DRAWBAR CONTROL LATCH (Figs. 1 & 2) The Baler Drawbar has two positions; operating and transport. Selection of the desired Drawbar position is accomplished by a Latch Mechanism with is operated by a Control Rope from the tractor operator‘s seat. A Stop Bolt is provided in the Stay Bar to prevent it from detaching. Refer to the illustrations for further details.

Implement Drive Line Guards (Fig. 5) The PTO Drive consists of two sections which are designed to rotate freely inside their respective Drive Shield Tubes. To prevent damage to the Fixed-length PTO Drive and rotating Shields, when NOT in use, store the PTO Drive connection as shown in Fig. 5.

HITCHJACK (Figs. 5 & 6) A Hitchjack is furnished with the Baler to support the machine when the tractor is disconnected as well as to facilitate aligning the Hitch Plates with the tractor drawbar for hookup. BE SURE that the Locking Pin is properly seated into the holes through the Jack Tube and Drawbar Hub, before disconnecting the tractor.

FRONT BEARING STAND (See Fig. 5) The Front Bearing Stand of the Baler is designed to pivot, forward and backward, to compensate for cornering and when traveling through ditches, trenches or ruts in the field.

HITCH CLEVIS PLATES (See Fig. 5) The Baler is provided with repositionable Clevis Plates to vary the attachment position of the Drawbar with respect to the tractor drawbar and PTO shaft. The

When the Jack is NOT being used to support the Baler, it can be conveniently unlocked and swung into its storage position. Wrap the Pin Chain around the Jack Handle, to prevent Handle from dragging on the ground.

WARNING BE SURE the Hitchjack Locking Pin is entirely and properly inserted through both Hub holes BEFORE disconnecting the tractor.

METERING ARM TRANSPORT LOCK (Fig. 7)

WARNING You may become entangled in moving components. Install the Transport Lock BEFORE threading the Needles or transporting the machine. Lock prevents the Metering Arm from engaging the Knotter cycle. Failure to heed could result in death or serious injury.

Only A safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machine, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

The Baler is provided with a Metering Arm Transport Lock to secure the position of the Arm to prevent it from activating the Knotter cycle.

NOTE:

After the Baler is transported and before starting to bale, BE SURE to de-activate the Lock.

SAFETY CHAIN & AUXILIARY LIGHTING (Fig. 8) As required or when desired, the Baler should be equipped with a safety chain and auxiliary lighting for transporting the unit on public highways. The chain should be routed as shown in the illustration.

PTO DRIVE (See Fig. 5) The PTO Drive consists of two sections which are designed to rotate freely inside their respective Drive Shield Tubes.

The front or Fixed-length Drive is provided with Spring–loaded Locking Device to positively lock the Drive connection onto the tractor PTO shaft. Depress the Locking Device, against the Spring tension, and slide the Yoke onto the tractor PTO. Release the Locking Device and move the Yoke ahead or back until the Lock engages into the groove of the PTO shaft.

NOTE: For added convenience when the Baler is NOT attached to the tractor, the Fixed-length PTO Drive can be supported by the curved Support (Fig. 5).

WARNING BE SURE that both sections of the PTO Drive rotate freely inside the Drive Shield Tubes at all times. BE SURE that the Fixed-length Drive connection is properly secured to the tractor PTO shaft and the Telescoping Drive connection is properly secure to the Baler Drive Input Shaft, BEFORE starting the tractor engine.

Also, BE SURE that the tractor master shield is in place and properly secured BEFORE starting the tractor.

CHAPTER 6 OPERATION EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN In an emergency or in case a foreign object enters the Pickup, the Feeder area or the Bale Forming Chamber, STOP Baler operation IMMEDIATELY by disengaging the tractor PTO.

GENERAL INFORMATION

CAUTION BEFORE starting the tractor engine and running the Baler, review and comply with ALL SAFETY recommendations set forth in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Know how to stop machine operation BEFORE starting it.

Crop material is picked off the ground by the Pickup Tines and delivered into the Feeder area. In the Feeder Area, the Packer assemblies move the crop material into the Bale Forming Chamber. Inside the Chamber, the Plunger moves back and forth to pack the crop into a bale. Each slice of the bale is formed by the action of Plunger, Cutoff Knife and Hay Checks, working in synchronization to pack slices (charges) together to form the bale to a preset length, established by the Metering Wheel and Arm mechanism.

The density of the bale is determined by the tension placed on the top and bottom of the bale with the Tension Rails and their associated Crank Adjustments on the back end of the Bale Chamber.

Once the bale reaches a preset size, the Knotter cycle is activated, tieing a Knot and cutting the twine.

As crop continues to be picked up and new bales are formed and tied, the previous formed and tied bales are forced through the Bale Forming Chamber.

BALING (Fig. 9) NOTE: Make the initial Bearing Support and Drawbar Hitch Plate settings relative to your tractor, according to details provided in the Preparing for Field Operation chapter of this manual.

WARNING Because dry material is being processed, tractor should also be equipped with a spark arrestor muffler, if tractor emits sparks.

After transporting the Baler to the field and before starting to run the Baler, make sure that the Bale Metering Arm Transport Lock is disengaged. Move the Baler Drawbar to the “Operating” position and adjust the Pickup height and flotation for crop and field condition, per details in the Adjustment chapter.

Move the Baler into position with respect to the windrow and BE SURE to check the path in front of the Pickup and ahead of the Baler before starting to bale.

Then, start the PTO, bring the tractor RPM up to the desired operating speed and begin baling.

The Baler MUST be operated with a tractor PTO speed of 540 RPM. This PTO speed will provide a Baler Plunger operating speed of 80 strokes per minute.

Adjust the ground travel speed with the tractor gear shift lever to match the crop and ground conditions to enable the best formed and tied bales possible. Overfeeding the Baler (traveling too fast) can produce improperlyshaped bales. For lighter windrows, reduce the PTO RPM and Plunger speed and increase the ground travel speed so that a consistent amount of crop is forced into the Bale Chamber.

NOTE:

NEVER expect the Baler to automatically adjust for variations in crop conditions, terrain, humidity...etc. Adjustments can be made to improve the bale density, appearance and how well the bales are tied. Refer to the Adjustments chapter for additional information.

OVERLOAD PROTECTION Both model Balers are provided with the same overload protection devices to prevent damage to the Baler and the tractor.

PTO Slip Clutch (Figs. 10) The PTO Shaft is protected by a Spring-loaded Slip Clutch having six (6) Springs. The Clutch slips and isolates the Drive Line from the shock-loading effects of the Plunger action and sudden tractor PTO engagements. See Adjustments chapter for additional details.

Flywheel Overrunning Mechanism (Figs. 10 & 11) An Overrunning Clutch is provided on the PTO connection to the Flywheel. The Overrunning Clutch allows the Baler to free-wheel when the PTO is disengaged or its speed is reduced. Refer to the Service chapter for additional details.

Flywheel Shear Bolt (Fig. 11) NOTE:

Replacement 5/16 x 2–1/4, Grade 8 Shear Bolts and Locknuts can be obtained in packaged quantities of eight Bolts and Locknuts by ordering Gehl part number 906551. The Nut for the Shear Bolt is located in a slot to prevent it from turning while the Shear Bolt is being tightened.

A single 5/16 x 2–1/4 Grade 8 Shear Bolt is provided in the Flywheel Shear Flange to protect the Main Drive Gearbox, Plunger, related Drive Sprockets and Chains.

TWINE & THREADING PROCEDURE General Information The Baler is designed to tie a tighter bale than is usually found in rectangular baling. This means that the finished bale will have less slack as more of the original bale density is retained. It is therefore possible to mistakenly overstress the twine and cause twine breakage by excessive bale density.

Many brands and grades of twine are marketed and it is common to assume all twine breakage is caused by the Baler rather than the quality of the twine.

It is recommended that only top quality twine (sisal or synthetic) be used in the Baler.

In the same manner as step 2, tie the inside twine from ball “5” to outside twine of ball “3” and and likewise tie the inside twine from ball “6” to outside twine of ball “4”.

NOTE: BE SURE to use Square Knots for joining the balls of twine.

Twinebox (Figs. 13 & 14) The Baler Twinebox accepts 6 balls of twine, as shown.

When placing the twine balls into Twinebox, do NOT remove wrappers around balls as this will prevent the twine from unraveling premature. Also, BE SURE the balls are placed in Twinebox with correct end upwards, as indicated by twine manufacturer.

UNPLUGGING 1 Plugging may occur in two particular areas of the Baler: in the Pickup area or the Bale Chamber area. The procedure for unplugging differs as indicated.

Pickup Area Plugging If too much crop material gets under the Windguard or otherwise plugs the Pickup area, proceed as follows: After all movement has stopped, proceed to remove the excess material as follows: 1.

Disengage the tractor PTO clutch, back the Baler away from the windrow and shut off the tractor engine.

Replace the Flywheel Shear Bolt, if it has sheared.

3.

Engage the Metering Arm Transport Lock.

4.

Rotate both Tension Adjustment Cranks equally counterclockwise to completely release bale tension.

5.

Bale Chamber Area Plugging (Fig. 18 & see Figs. 9 & 11)

Rotate Flywheel by hand counterclockwise (when viewed from behind Flywheel) to bring the Plunger to its most forward position and stop rotating the Flywheel.

6.

If too much material is brought in, it may plug the Bale Chamber and cause the Flywheel Shear Bolt to shear. If this occurs, proceed as follows:

Restart the tractor and engage the PTO at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle to force the Plunger through its cycle and clear the plug.

7.

Stop operation and exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE, before deactivating the Metering Arm Transport Lock and reapply bale tension.

8.

Resume baling.

WARNING Exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE, page 8, before attempting to unplug any part of the Baler.

2.

Remove the excess material, by hand, and spread it out in front of the Pickup.

3.

Restart the PTO and slowly proceed into the windrow and continue baling.

CAUTION When a Shear Bolt fails, the Baler Flywheel will continue to rotate, after the tractor PTO is disengaged. Wait for all movement to STOP BEFORE proceeding.

TRASH The area under the Knotter Shield is vulnerable to problems caused by trash buildup. BE SURE to check the area and remove any buildup at least every 50 hours of Baler operation.

CHAPTER 7 ADJUSTMENTS

WARNING BEFORE proceeding to perform any adjustments on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE, page 8.

If, after fully adjusting the Bale Tension Rails, the bale density is still insufficient, order and install a Wedge set which contains two pairs of Wedges and mounting hardware. Install only one pair of Wedges into the Bale Forming Chamber, at a time, until the desired bale density is achieved. Refer to the Optional Features & Accessories chapter for additional details.

NOTE: NEVER attempt to install more than two pair of Wedges into the Bale Chamber at one time.

BALE DENSITY ADJUSTMENT (Fig. 19)

KNOTTER (Fig. 20)

The density of the bales is determined by the tension on the Upper and Lower Bale Tension Rails. Adjustment is made by equally rotating the Left and Right Tensioner Handles which appropriately increases or decrease the tension on the Springs.

The “Suretie” Knotter is initially setup at the factory.

Under normal operation, field adjustments are NOT required. The compressed Spring length should be 1–5/8″ (41 mm), as indicated. If necessary, readjust the bolt to obtain this dimension with NO twine in the Twine Retainer Disc grooves.

DRIVE CHAINS (Fig. 21) There are five different Drive Chains on the Baler. All but the Pickup Chain are provided with adjustable Idler Sprockets to adjust Drive Chain tension. An adjustable

Idler Slide is provided for adjusting the Pickup Chain tension. The various operating tensions are specified in the drawing (Fig. 21). Tension should be checked and readjusted, if required, after every 100 hours of Baler operation.

Adjusting the Stop in the Slot of Metering Arm adjusts the length of the bales.

Moving the Stop upwards in the Slot increases the length of the bales. Conversely, moving the Stop downwards in the Slot decreases the length of the bales.

To ensure correct operation of the Metering Wheel, a clearance of 3/16” to 1/4” (5 to 6 mm) MUST be maintained between the front edge of the Metering Arm and the Knurled Roller at the center of the Disc assembly.

This clearance is required through the full arc of Metering Arm when the Reset Cam on the Clutch is in the downward position.

The clearance can be obtained by adjusting the position of the Metering Wheel assembly by means of the slotted holes in Support Brackets, at both sides of the Bale Chamber.

Excessive drag on the Brake causes a jerking motion at the Clutch and a strong disengagement. Insufficient drag will allow drifting of the Needles from the ”home” (rearmost) position after the Clutch has been tripped.

NOTE: Before adjustment, check that the Brake Disc is clean (free of paint, corrosion, etc.).

To adjust the Needle Brake: 1.

Loosen Spring Tension Nuts until all tension is removed from the Springs.

2.

Tighten the Nuts, by hand, until the Nut and Washer just begin to exert pressure on the Springs.

3.

Advance each Nut four turns.

PICKUP Flotation (Figs. 24 & 25) To adjust flotation of the pick–up: 1.

Lower the Pickup assembly into the “field operating” position.

2.

Loosen the Locknut on underside of Support Frame.

3.

Adjust the Nut, on the top of the Frame, to obtain a dimension of 1–3/4″ (44 mm) for a 3210 model Baler or 3–1/2″ (89 mm) for a 3250 model Baler.

NEEDLE BRAKE The Needle Brake assembly consists of a Disc and Pad. Adjusting the Spring Tension Nuts places appropriate tension on the Brake.

With the Flotation Spring(s) adjusted as detailed above, it should take approximately 35 lbs (16 kg) to lift the Pickup at Windguard Crosstube.

NOTE:

During field operation, if the Pickup has a tendency to bounce, especially over rough ground, it may be necessary to reduce Flotation Spring(s) tension by slightly decreasing the dimensions given previously.

Gauge Wheel (Fig. 25) The adjustable Gauge Wheel, on the right end of Pickup, prevents damage to Pickup when operating over rough or bumpy ground.

After the operating height of Pickup has been adjusted, the Gauge Wheel should be adjusted so that the Tire is approximately 1” (25 mm) clear of ground.

Height Control (See Fig. 24) The height of the Pickup should be set to enable the Pickup to gather all the crop without the Pickup Teeth contacting ground.

To set the height, remove Hairpin Cotter Pin, and adjust Pickup on Support Rod by reinserting Hairpin in one of the four holes provided in the Rod. The fifth (bottommost) hole in the Support Rod is used to place the Pick–up in the “Transport” position.

Windguard (See Figs. 24 & 25) The Windguard holds material against Pickup Teeth.

The Windguard can be adjusted, on both sides evenly, to any one of four positions using the appropriate set of holes, as follows: For extremely heavy crops, install the Windguard Mounting End Brackets using the uppermost holes For extremely light crops, install the Windguard Mounting End Brackets using the lowermost holes For less than extremely heavy or extremely light crops, use appropriate alternate holes

The Packer Fork assembly can be adjusted from its normal packing position to move more material to either the right hand side of Bale Chamber or to the left hand side. Adjustment is made at Spring Retainer assembly.

1.

For normal packing in the majority of crops and crop conditions, the Pivot Pin should be located in center hole of Spring Retainer Bracket and the top hole of Fork assembly.

2.

Where more material is required at right hand side of Bale Chamber, relocate the Pin in left hand hole of Bracket and in the upper hole of Fork assembly.

3.

Where more material is required at left hand side of Bale Chamber, relocate the Pin in right hand hole of Bracket (from the back side) and in lower hole of Fork assembly.

Crank Arm and make sure it is also straight down, so both Crank Arms are parallel. If Arms are NOT parallel, loosen the Idler Sprockets and remove the Drive Chain from Driven Sprocket. When Chain is removed, right hand Crank Arm will drop to straight down position.

With both Crank Arms parallel, reinstall Chain and adjust tension at Idler Sprocket until there is 1/4 to 1/2″ (6 to 13 mm) deflection on lower strand of Chain.

Packer Fork to Plunger (Figs. 31 & 32) The timing of Packer Forks, relative to Bale Chamber Plunger, MUST also be checked.

To check the timing of Packer Forks, relative to Bale Chamber Plunger, rotate the Flywheel, by hand, until Plunger is on its compression stroke and the Projections, on face of the Plunger are flush with rear edge of Front Stripper Rail, as shown.

Measure distance from top side of the Front Stripper Rail to the center of left hand Packer Fork Crankshaft.

If this measurement is 13 to 13–1/2″ (330 to 343 mm), the Fork assembly is correctly timed; if NOT, retime it according to the following procedure: 1.

Obtain wooden (2 x 4) block 11–3/4″ (298 mm) long and block-up under the left Packer Fork Crankshaft so it remains in position.

2.

Loosen the Idler Sprocket and remove the Main Drive Chain to the Plunger Crank Arm.

3.

Turn the Flywheel (by hand) and position the Plunger so that the Projections, on the face of Plunger are flush with rear edge of Front Stripper Rail.

4.

Make sure that the Plunger remains in this position and reinstall and readjust the Chain tension while keeping the Chain tight on the Drive side.

5.

Remove block of wood and recheck the timing between the Packer Fork and Plunger to ensure they are timed correctly.

Needles (Figs. 33 through 39 and see Fig. 20)

At this point, Needles should be rubbing with a slight pressure on the Knotter Frame, as shown in Fig. 34; if NOT, loosen Nuts on Bolts and adjust the Needles laterally on the Swing Frame until required contact is made with Knotter Frame.

5.

Continue to rotate the Swing Frame and check the clearance of Fixed Roller of the Needle between the Twine Disc and the Twine Retainer. As the Needle passes the Disc and the Retainer, the clearance should measure between 1/16 to 1/8″ (1.5 to 3 mm).

6.

If the clearance is NOT correct, refer to Fig. 36 and loosen the one NUT and tighten the other Nut to move the appropriate Needle on the Swing Frame, until clearance is correct.

To check and adjust the Needles, proceed as follows: 1.

Remove all hay from Bale Chamber.

2.

Carefully remove Cotter Pin and Clevis Pin to disconnect Connecting Rod from Swing Frame Bracket.

Rotate Swing Frame assembly, by hand, until Needles are adjacent to Knotter Frame.

Move the Swing Frame assembly back to the home position and reattach the Connecting Rod to the Swing Frame Bracket with the Clevis Pin.

With the Swing Frame in the “home” position, check the clearance between the Needle tips and the bottom of the Bale Chamber. Clearance should be 1/2: to 3/4″ (13 to 19 mm). If clearance is incorrect, remove the Clevis Pin, to detach the Connecting Rod and adjust the Clevis until the correct clearance is obtained.

Rotate the Flywheel until Needles enter Bale Chamber and tips of Needles are flush with inside of Bale Chamber Floor.

Check that there is 1/4” to 1” (6 to 25 mm) clearance between end of Projection, of the Plunger, and the back of the Needle. If clearance is NOT obtained:

Loosen the Idler Pulley and remove the Knotter Drive Chain from Drive Sprocket (Fig. 33).

b.

Rotate the Flywheel until Plunger is in correct position to provide the required 1/4” to 1” (6 to 25 mm) clearance (Fig. 38). Also, rotate Driven Sprocket until the Internal Stop of Sprocket contacts the Pawl (Fig. 20).

TWINE TENSION (Figs. 42, 43, 44, 45 & 46) 1

The tension on the twine should be adjusted at the Twine Tension Plate by adjusting the Nut so that there is a deflection of 2–1/2 to 3″ (63 to 75 mm) at the Take–up Springs underneath the Twinebox, as the twine just starts to slip through the Tensioner when pulling on the twine in the direction of the Bale Chamber.

CHAPTER 8 LUBRICATION GENERAL INFORMATION

Lubricate Every 10 hours (or daily) All Roller Drive Chains Lubricate Every 50 hours

CAUTION NEVER attempt to lubricate this unit when any part of the machine is in motion. ALWAYS BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding to lubricate this equipment.

NOTE:

Before starting the Baler, make sure the entire unit is properly lubricated and that the Main Gear Housing is filled to the proper oil level.

It is well to remember that a sufficient amount of oil and grease will prevent excessive part wear and early failure.

MAIN GEAR HOUSING The Main Gear Housing should be checked at the start of each season of Baler operation and after every 100 hours of operation, thereafter. Replenish the oil level, as necessary. The Housing requires approximately 7 U.S. quarts (6.7 liters) of EP80W90 Gear Lube. Order and obtain a 1 Quart Bottle by Gehl Part Number 127178.

GREASING NOTE:

Grease all fittings on a prescribed basis, at the intervals of operation listed, before and after storing the unit, and as otherwise listed. Use a good grade of Lithium base grease.

Wipe dirt from the fittings before greasing to prevent the dirt from being forced into the Bearing or pivot. Replace any missing fittings, when noted. Force the grease into the fitting until it comes out at the Bearing Seal or at the Shaft. To minimize dirt build-up, avoid excessive greasing.

NOTE: In addition to the fittings, check and repack (if necessary) the Wheel Bearings once a year and before placing Baler into storage.

OILING Lubricate all Drive Chains using a good grade of foaming aerosol lubricant, such as NAPA Chain and Cable Lubricant. This type of lubricant increases the life of the Chain 3 to 4 times over those lubricated at 8 hour intervals with new or used motor oil. The recommended method is to spray the entire length of Chain on the center of the Rollers. It is better to lubricate Chains when they are warm (after use, rather than before).

In addition to the Roller Chains, apply motor oil on all other points listed at the intervals specified.

CHAPTER 9 SERVICE e.

CAUTION

Reassemble Yoke, Thrust Washer and Special Washer (Pin in Washer MUST be aligned with Hole in Shaft). Tighten Bolt to 55 ft–lbs (75 Nm).

BEFORE proceeding to perform all Service routines on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

NOTE: The following information is referred to in both the Troubleshooting Guide and the Maintenance Schedule chapters of this manual. It should be understood that all services detailed in this chapter are Owner-Operator responsibilities.

Where indicated, certain service routines should only be carried-out under the direction of an authorized GEHL equipment dealer.

This section covers items of servicing which are required periodically to keep Baler in good running order. These minor items can be done with ordinary tools. Where major servicing is required, consult your authorized GEHL Dealer.

PTO YOKE END PLAY (Fig. 47) The PTO Yoke should have an end play of 0.0l0 to 0.030″ (0.25 to 0.76 mm).

Check end play of PTO Yoke, if in excess of 0.030″ (0.76 mm), it is necessary to place Shims, 3, behind the Yoke. To install or remove shims:

a.

Remove Shield in the front of Flywheel.

b.

Rotate the Rear Shield to gain access to Shield Retaining Bolts.

The Twine Knife should always be razor sharp; especially the corner, which should be checked frequently to ensure it is NOT chipped.

Remove Retaining Bolt, 4, (left–hand threads) Special Washer and Thrust Washer.

d.

Remove PTO Yoke and insert correct amount of Shims to obtain the 0.010 to .030″ (0.25 to 0.76 mm) end play.

If the knife becomes dull or the corner is chipped, it should be removed for resharpening.

Knife Removal To remove the Knife: 1.

Unlatch and open the Knotter Cover. Properly engage the Cover Support.

Check and readjust the Twine Knife clearances per the following details, if necessary.

Also, check to ensure there is 0.040″ to 0.050″ (1 to 1.25 mm) clearance between Knife, 1, Fig. 53, and the Twine Disc, 2, as indicated at 3, To obtain these clearances, loosen the Socket Head Screws, 4, Fig. 51, and move the Locating Plate 3, Fig. 51, in the slotted holes. BE SURE the Socket Head Screws are securely retightened when adjustments have been completed.

Assemble Bill Hook parts, Fig. 61, holding Bill Hook, 1, with open end upwards.

Install pin, 5, Fig. 61, being sure pin is in notch in loose jaw; otherwise pin will be damaged.

PLUNGER KNIFE SUPPORT (Figs. 74 & 75)

NOTE:

If Shims had been installed behind either Knife, make sure these are reinstalled in their original positions when Knife is reinstalled.

Remove Plunger Knife, 1, Fig. 72, by removing all three Countersunk Screws, 3, Fig. 72, with a 5/16″ allen wrench.

Continue Plunger movement until throat opening is completely clear and then remove Chamber Knife, 2, Fig. 72, by removing all three Countersunk Screws with a 5/16″ allen wrench.

Plunger Knife Support, 2, Fig. 74, is located against Plunger Knife at location, 5, Fig. 75, and is used to prevent toe–in of Plunger Knife toward Bale Chamber.

Where toe–in of Plunger is evident, support should be adjusted so that knife is parallel to Bale Chamber Knife.

Adjustment is made by slightly loosening Bolts, 3, Fig. 74, and tapping Support, 2, so that support is adjusted in slotted holes. Make sure Bolts, 3, are tightened securely after adjustment has been made.

NOTE: Support is adjusted to ensure Plunger Knife is parallel to Bale Chamber Knife NOT to adjust Knife clearance.

NOTE:

One of the bolts is located in a Locking Plate with a diagonal slot, 3, Fig. 78, which is retained by Block, 4. This arrangement allows the Rail to be tapped (by hitting the nuts) toward the rear of the Baler (in the direction of arrow ”5”) so the bolt is moved in the slot and the trapezoidalshaped Rail moves the Plunger Knife to effect its clearance to the Bale Chamber Knife.

BALE CHAMBER KNIFE DETAIL (Fig. 79)

WARNING Disconnect Plunger Connecting Rod, 1, Fig. 73, from Drive Crank, 2, Fig. 73, to prevent unintentional movement of the Plunger.

Whenever a new Bale Chamber Knife, 1, Fig. 79, is installed, it is important that the 0.003″ to 0.006″ (0.07 to 0.15 mm) clearance, as indicated at ”5”, Fig. 79, be re–established for the new Knife.

This clearance MUST exist between face of Bale Chamber Knife, 1, Fig. 79, and side of Guide Rail, 2, to

ensure Plunger Knife, 4, does NOT contact Bale Chamber Knife when Baler is operating.

The 0.003″ to 0.006″ (0.07 to 0.15 mm) clearance can be obtained by using existing Shims, 3, Fig. 79, and where necessary, adding Shims, supplied with Baler from factory. When this clearance is obtained, reconnect the Plunger Connecting Rod, 1, Fig. 73, to the Drive Crank, 2.

After a new Knife has been installed, turn Flywheel by hand to ensure Plunger Knife is clear of Bale Chamber Knife. Also, recheck Knife clearance as detailed under “Shear Knife Adjustment” topic in the Adjustments chapter and re-adjust, if necessary.

2.

Remove Chains from solvent and allow to drain.

3.

Completely immerse Chains in SAE 30 motor oil and allow to soak as long as possible, preferably overnight.

4.

Remove from oil and suspend Chain to allow surplus oil to drain off. Wipe chain with clean cloth.

NOTE:

Chain MUST be allowed to drain thor-

oughly.

If at any time, the Main Gear Housing has been drained of oil, the following procedure MUST be used for refilling: 1.

Make sure that the Drain Plug is replaced and tightened.

2.

Fill Housing through Oil Level Plug with EP80W90 Gear Lube until it just begins to run out of Level Plug Hole. Then, wipe up any surplus oil and reinstall the Plug, The Housing requires 1 U.S. quart (0.95 liters) of EP80W90 Lube. Order and obtain 1 Quart Bottle by Gehl Part Number 127178).

operation. The Left 11L-15 Tire, on the 3210 model Baler, should be inflated to 25 PSIG (155 kPa) or, on the 3250 model Baler, should be inflated to 32 PSIG (224 kPa). The Right 27 x 9.50-15 Tire on either model Baler should be inflated to 15 PSIG (105 kPa).

NOTE: If a Bale Thrower Attachment is installed the Left Tire pressure should be increase to 36 PSIG (252 kPa).

Wheel Lugs torque should also be checked after every 50 hours of operation and tightened with 90 ft-lb (124 Nm) torque.

Inflating or servicing tires can be dangerous.

Whenever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires. In addition, do NOT place your fingers on the tire bead or rim during inflation; serious injury or amputation could result. In any event, to avoid possible death or serious injury, follow the safety precautions below:

BE SURE the Rim is clean and free of rust.

HAY CHECKS (Fig. 82)

After every 10 hours of operation or daily, remove all crop material from beneath the top and bottom Hay Checks, as necessary. Debris can affect bale shape and tying performance.

Lubricate both the tire beads and rim flanges with a soap solution. Do NOT use oil or grease.

•

Use a clip-on tire chuck with a remote hose and gauge which allows you to stand clear of the tire while inflating it.

•

NEVER inflate beyond 35 PSI (240 kPa) to seat the beads. If the beads have NOT seated by the time the pressure reaches 35 PSI, deflate the assembly, reposition the tire on the rim, relubricate both parts and re-inflate it. Inflation pressure beyond 35 PSI with unseated beads may break the bead or rim with explosive force sufficient to cause death or serious injury.

•

After seating the beads, adjust the inflation pressure to the recommended operating pressure listed.

•

Do NOT weld, braze, or otherwise attempt to repair and use a damaged rim.

The minimum power required to operate the Baler is 30 horsepower.

Back the tractor toward Baler and check the alignment of the Hitch.

BALER OPERATING SPEED

If Hitch is NOT in alignment (when Baler is level), reposition Hitch Plates to closest one of the four positions shown.

The Baler MUST be operated with tractor PTO speed of 540 RPM. This provides a Plunger operating speed on the Baler 80 strokes per minute.

TRACTOR GROUND SPEED The ground speed of the tractor MUST be regulated to suit both crop and ground conditions to ensure bales will be properly formed and tied.

NOTE: If Hitch Plates are repositioned, the mounting Bolts MUST be tightened to a torque of 190 to 210 ft–lbs (257 to 285 Nm).

When Hitch is aligned, connect Hitch to tractor drawbar using a locking hitchpin. Attach PTO Shaft Coupler to tractor PTO shaft by pulling back the Slide Lock and sliding the Coupling onto PTO shaft. Make sure locking ball engages shaft when Slip Lock Ring is released.

When Baler PTO Shaft is attached to tractor, the two sections of the PTO Shaft should be in a straight line when viewed from the side of the PTO Shaft. If NOT, adjust Upper and/or Lower PTO Bearing Support Yokes, to obtain the correct alignment.

The “Field Operating” position is the one where the Latch Pin is engaged in the outer hole of Stay Bar. The “Transport” position (for towing the Baler) is with the Latch Pin is engaged in the inner hole of Stay Bar.

Refer to the “Twine & Threading” topic in the Operation chapter for procedures to follow for threading twine.

If the Baler is equipped with an optional Bale Thrower, connect the Thrower Electrical Harness per details in the separate Thrower Manual provided.

Place the Hitchjack in the “Storage” position.

DRAWBAR OPERATING AND TRANSPORT POSITIONS (Figs. 87 & 88) The Drawbar can be engaged in one of two positions by anchoring the Latch Pin into one of the two holes in Stay Bar.

CHAPTER 11 TRANSPORTING METERING ARM TRANSPORT LOCK (Fig. 89)

WARNING You may become entangled in moving components. Install the Transport Lock BEFORE threading the Needles or transporting the machine. Lock prevents the Metering Arm from engaging the Knotter cycle. Failure to heed could result in death or serious injury.

Emblem Mounting Bracket mounted to the back of the large top Shield; the SMV Emblem MUST be purchased locally. Because of variations in safety laws for different states and localities, it may be necessary to use a different location for displaying the Slow-moving Emblem. Your Gehl Dealer can aid you in installing a different Emblem Mounting Bracket (if required). Red Reflector Strips are provided at the rear corners of the Baler and Amber Reflector Strips are provided at the front corner of the Baler, as shown.

As required or when desired, the Baler can be equipped with a Safety Chain for operation on public highways.

The Safety Chain, when attached in this manner, has the following characteristics:

ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding use of a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on public highways. ONLY a safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machines, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations.

Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow-moving Vehicle Emblem. NEVER tow a Baler on a public highway at a speed greater than 20 mph (32 kmh). BE SURE the Metering Arm Transport Lock is properly engaged, before transporting the Baler.

CHAPTER 12 STORAGE If Baler is to be out of use for a considerable amount of time, the following storage procedure is recommended.

Release pressure on Slip Clutch Facings by loosening Slip Clutch Springs.

1.

Thoroughly clean the Baler, inside and outside, making sure that all crop material and accumulated dirt, etc. are removed.

6.

Remove twine from Baler and store the twine balls in a dry area. Store the balls on end to prevent distortion.

2.

Inside the Bale Chamber and on those areas where the original factory finish has become worn off, liberally coat these surfaces with a rust preventative.

7.

Check the Baler for signs of damage and worn parts. Repair Baler as necessary and order replacement parts from your authorized GEHL Dealer.

8.

Store the unit inside a shed, if possible, or cover the top half of the unit to protect it, if it MUST be stored outside.

9.

Reorder and replace any required parts so that the Baler will be ready to operate at the start of the next baling season.

Carry out all lubrication detailed in “Lubrication” chapter of this manual. Grease all Fittings and make sure the PTO Drive Tubes and Shields are completely greased. Repack the Wheel Bearings, if required.

Raise Baler and insert blocks under the Axle to take the weight off both Tires.

KNOTTER NOTE: Knotter problems may appear after a long period of operation. Baler will be running well and then, all of a sudden, the Baler starts to mistie. Use the following steps to find and identify a tying or knotting problem: 1.

Find the twine from the broken bales.

2.

Determine which Knotter has a problem.

3.

Determine where or how the knot was miss-made a.

One twine has a knot and the other twine doesn‘t

Adjust for 1/4 to 3/4″ (6 to 18 mm) behind tip of Plunger.

Examine Knotter for loose or broken parts with particular attention to the Bill Hook Jaw and Twine Knife.

Replace any broken parts.

Insufficient Twine Retainer tension.

Check Retainer Spring setting.

Compressed Spring length should be 1-5/8″ (41 mm), with NO twine in the Retainer.

Make sure the Hay Dogs are engaging fully.

Remove any foreign material and make sure Dogs move freely.

Compare a good Knotter with a basd one.

Attach a chain to the Baler Axle and fork frame.

Chain must be slightly longer than forks to prevent damage to the pickup as the Baler is tilted toward the forks.

Make sure all personnel are in a safe position when lowering the Baler.

Back the forklift away from the Baler. As the Baler tilts over center, keep the forks raised close to the Baler tire for support.

Lower the Baler to the floor. After Baler is lowered, remove the chain and back the forklift away from the Baler.

BALER ASSEMBLY Baler set-up should be performed inside an enclosed workshop which is equipped with the proper tools and an overhead hoist. Although the procedures imply a single set-up person, two people can and will be able to assemble the machine more quickly and easily.

At the left-hand end of the Axle, remove the top Nut and Bolt. Insert the Hub Spindle into the hole in the end of the Axle and then reinstall Bolt, so it passes through the hole in the Hub Spindle. Reinstall and tighten the Nut to a torque of 60-70 ft-lb (81-95 Nm).

Install the Staybar through the Bale Chamber Bracket with the chamfered hole side facing up and the Stop Pin facing down. Connect the Staybar to the Drawbar using a Plain Washer and 1/4 x 1-/2″ Cotter Pin. PTO Shaft Connection (Figs. 106 through 113) Remove the Shield from the front of the Flywheel by partially rotating the Rear Shield to gain access to three Nuts. Remove the Nuts and then remove the Shield on front of Flywheel.

The PTO Shaft and Flywheel center incorporates an Overrunning Mechanism so that, when the PTO Drive is disengaged on the tractor, the Baler PTO Shaft will also be disengaged while the remainder of the Baler Drives are coming to a stop.

The Overrunning Mechanism consists of two Dogs each with a Spring installed at 180° to each other at the end of the Baler PTO Shaft. For reference, the Dogs are installed with the curved tip to the outside.

NOTE:

The PTO Shaft must rotate freely when turned by hand in a clockwise direction (facing the Flywheel). If binding occurs, remove the PTO Shaft and remove any burrs or paint from the outer diameter of the PTO casting. Then, reassemble and recheck for smooth rotation.

Check End Play (Fig. 113)

NOTE:

Before checking end play, make sure Shear Bolt is tight and that Shear Bolt Arm is tightened against both the Shaft Shoulder and the Flywheel.

Check end play of PTO Yoke. It should be 0.010 to 0.030″. If in excess of 0.030″, it will be necessary to add Shims behind Yoke. Disassemble and add Shims, as required. If end play is less than 0.010″, remove Flywheel and Shear Bolt Arm and remove any paint or dirt between the surfaces (0.010″ minimum end play MUST BE obtained BEFORE proceeding). Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.

Install the lower half of PTO Support Bracket to the Drawbar using a 3/4 x 7-1/8″ Headless Pin. Secure the Headless Pin with a 3/16 x 1-1/4″ Cotter Pin at each end.

PTO Bearing Support (Fig. 114) At the front of the Drawbar, install the Hitch Plates using (2 each) 3/4 x 3-3/4″ Cap Screws, Hardened Washers and Lock Nuts. Tighten Nuts to 250-270 ft-lb (340-365Nm). Refer to “Preparing for Field Operation” chapter for additional details.

Install the curved PTO Shaft Support using the Clip and a 3/8 x 3/4″ Cap Screw, Plain Washer and Hexagon Nut.

Install the upper half of the Bracket to the lower half using a 1/2 x 2″ Cap Screw with a Special (hardened) 17/32 x 1-1/2 x 0.190″ thick Washer and Lock Nut. Secure the Lock Nut so that Bracket are free to pivot.

NOTE: The Stiffener Flange of each Bracket should be located toward the rear.

Install the Bearing Housing on the PTO Shaft with the Bearing and Snap Ring toward the front.

NOTE: The Bearing is a press-fit on the Shaft.

When installing the Bearing make sure that only the Inner Race is used to press the Bearing onto the Shaft otherwise the Bearing can be damaged.

Install the Bearing Housing at the top of the upper Bracket using a 7/16 x 7″ Cap Screw; making sure that long Spacer is in mounting portion of Housing. Before installing the Nut, install the Rope Guide (Wire Loop) (NOT shown) over the Bolt and then install and tighten the Nut. 65

Install the Bell Housing over the Bearing Housing and secure with three Cap Screws and Lock Washers.

Connect the Telescopic section of the rear PTO Shaft to the front PTO shaft and align the Set Screw with the recess in the PTO shaft. Tighten the Set Screw and Jam Nut to secure the Telescopic section.

Clearance Between Plunger and Bale Chamber Knives (Fig. 115)

NOTE:

It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that clearance between the Plunger Knife and the Bale Chamber Knife be checked BEFORE the Bale Formers are installed. It is much more convenient to check (and adjust) the clearance at this stage than at any future time with the Bale Formers and Tension Rails installed. Check the clearance between the Plunger Knife and the Bale Chamber Knife along the entire length of the Knives. Clearance should be between 0.005″ and 0.030″.

NOTE:

CAUTION Use extreme caution when turning the Plunger, to check the clearance, since the Knives are very sharp. Under NO circumstances, should anyone attempt to insert their hand between the Knives (while they are separated by the Plunger stroke) .

Bale Formers and Tensioners (Figs.

NOTE: After the Shoulder Bolt, Plain Washer and Lock Nut are installed and the Lock Nut is tightly secured, the Metering Arm MUST fall freely and be centered between the Retaining Discs.

The Metering Wheel determines the length of the bales as they are being formed. Adjusting the Stop in the Slot of Metering Arm adjusts the length of the bales. To increase the length of the bales, move the Stop upwards in the Slot; to shorten the length of the bales, move the Stop downwards.

To ensure correct operation of the Metering Wheel, a clearance of 3/16” to 1/4” (5 to 6 mm) MUST be maintained between the front edge of the Metering Arm and the Knurled Roller at the center of the Disc assembly. This clearance is required through the full arc of Metering Arm when the Reset Cam on the Clutch is in the downward position.

The clearance can be obtained by adjusting the position of the Metering Wheel assembly by means of the slotted 68

NOTE: The third Ceramic Guide is installed at the approximate location shown in the Needle Guard. Also, when the U-bolts are tightened, the Ceramic Guides MUST be located directly in-line with the Twine Groove of the Needles.

Connect the Hinged Support Strap to the Shield using a 3/16 x 15/16″ Clevis Pin with a Plain Washer and Cotter Pin. Use the right-hand bolt at the Upper Tension Rail to attach the lower end of the Hinged Support Strap.

Install the Bracket to Swing Frame Shield for the Rubber Latch. Close the Knotter Shield and check the alignment with the Needle Guard Shield. Adjust the Needle Guard Shield, if necessary, to align the Shields.

At the front of the Baler and in the area next to the Flywheel, install the Shield Latch using a 5/16 x 3/4 Cap Screw, Lock Washer and Nut. Using existing holes, attach the Shield Latch Anchor to the Front Shield with (2 each) 1/4 x 5/8 Cap Screws and Lock Nuts.

SMV Emblem Mounting Bracket (See Fig. 128) Install the SMV Emblem Holder Bracket in the pre-drilled holes at the rear of the Packer Housing using (2 each) 1/4 x 5/8 Carriage Bolts, Plain Washers, Lock Washers and Nuts. If necessary, attach the SMV Bracket Holder to the Bracket with (2 each) 5/16 x 5/8 Carriage Bolts and Lock Nuts.

Slipping PTO Slip Clutch (Fig. 133)

CAUTION

CAUTION To avoid possible damage as a result of Clutch seizure caused by lack of use, the Clutch should be slipped before a new machine is first put into operation and at the beginning of each season.

BEFORE proceeding to perform all Service routines on this unit, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

1.

Loosen the Clutch Spring Nuts until 1/4″ (6 mm) of thread is showing.

2.

To prevent Baler from turning while slipping the Clutch, engage the Plunger Stop as follows:

With the Plunger at the front of the Baler, trip the Metering Mechanism.

b.

Rotate ONLY the Knotter Shaft 1/4 turn clockwise, to allow the Plunger Stop to move into the Bale Chamber.

c.

Rotate the Flywheel in the normal direction (counterclockwise when viewed from back of Baler) until the Plunger engages the Plunger stop.

3.

Start the tractor and engage tractor PTO power and slip the Clutch for 10 to 20 seconds.

4.

Exercise the Mandatory Safety Shutdown procedure, disengage the PTO and stop the tractor engine.

5.

Rotate the Knotter Shaft back to the home position and reset the Metering Trip Arm.

6.

Re-tighten Nuts, on the Clutch bolts until the shoulder is tight on the Pressure Plate.

To mount the components of the package, proceed as follows: 1. Using the hardware provided, preassemble and tightly secure the Bracket assembly to the Chute assembly.

2. Place the (2) Special Flat Washers onto the Tube of the Bale Arm assembly and slide the Tube into the Pivots of the Bracket assembly. Fasten the Tube by installing a Cotter Pin through appropriate hole in the end of the Tube. Bring the two Washers together and limit their movement by installing a Cotter Pin on each side of the Washers.

4.

Attach the preassembled components of steps 1, 2 and 3 to the end of the Bale Forming Chamber using the appropriate hardware. Hang the Chute and Bale Arm so that they are parallel to the ground by appropriately suspending them with the Chains hooked over the Tabs on each side of the Forming Chamber.

5.

Properly position and install the Clamp assembly and the Brake Arm assembly between the two Special Flat Washers (installed in step 2) and around the Tube of the Bale Arm assembly with (2 each) 3/8 x 3–3/4 Carriage Bolts, Compression Springs, Plain Washers and 3/8 Lock Nuts. Initially, tighten the Lock Nuts equally so that the Springs compress to a measured length of 2-1/8″ (54 mm).

NOTE: Brake tension can be equally readjusted so that the Bale Arm does NOT bounce when traveling over bumps or through ruts.

Properly position and install the Link onto the Brake Arm assembly with a Short-necked 3/8 x 1 Carriage Bolt, Flat Washer with Square Hole, Spacer, Plain Washer and 3/8 Lock Nut.

7.

Connect the other end of the Link to the side of the Bale Forming Chamber with the other Shortnecked 3/8 x 1 Carriage Bolt, Spacer, Plain Washer and 3/8 Lock Nut.

Using hardware provided, anchor one of the Tailgate Chains to the appropriate hole in the Chute assembly. Likewise, anchor the other Tailgate Chain to the appropriate hole in the Bale Arm assembly.

SWINGING WAGON HITCH (Fig. 142 and see Figs. 138 & 140) The Swinging Wagon Hitch (805101) is a field-installed accessory for mounting a 51″ (1295 mm) Long Wagon Pole (805102) or a 26″ (660 mm) Long Wagon Pole (805103); either length Pole MUST also be ordered separately.

Installation involves proper positioning and attachment of the Wagon Hitch assembly to the bottom and sides of the Bale Forming Chamber, using the eight (8) aligning mounting holes provided in the Chamber. The Hitch is secured at seven of the eight (7 of the 8) attachment hole positions with (1 each) 1/2 x 1–1/4 Cap Screw, Hardened Washer and Lock Nut. The eighth (front left) position is secured with a 1/2 x 1–1/2 Cap Screw, Hardened Washer and Lock Nut. This is necessary when the Baler is equipped with a Bale Thrower Attachment, to accommodate the extra thickness for the Control Cylinder Mount.

After the Wagon Hitch assembly is properly secured to the Bale Chamber, the separately ordered Wagon Pole can be inserted and secured to the Hitch with the Clevis Pin and Cotter Pin provided. Select the desired swing position and secure the Pole with the smaller Clevis Pin and Hairpin Cotter Pin.

HAY WEDGE KIT (Fig. 143) The Hay (Bale Chamber) Wedge Kit (805104) is available to extend the adjustment limitations of the Upper and Lower Bale Tension Rails and increase bale density in extremely dry and spongy crops such as prairie grass. The Kit consists of two pairs of Hay Wedges which can be installed inside the Bale Forming Chamber, using holes already provided. Only one pair of Wedges should be installed at a time using (2 each) 5/16 x 3/4 Carriage Bolts, Lock Washers and Hexagon Nuts.

NOTE: Wedges MUST always be positioned and installed directly across from each other, starting at the back end of the Bale Chamber. Do NOT attempt to operate the Baler with more than two pair of Wedges installed at one time.

PLUNGER FACE EXTENSION KIT (Fig. 144) The Plunger Face Extension Kit (805105) is available to improve Knotter performance in stemmy crops such as corn stalks or sudan grass. By extending the face of the Plunger, deeper grooves are made in each slab which, in turn, provides more room for the Needles to deliver and position the twine. Installation involves proper positioning and attachment of the four Plunger Extensions with (2 each) 3/8 x 1 Cap Screws, Plain Washers and Lock Washers and, the Spacer Plate, under the Plunger Knife Support, using the original attaching hardware.

NEW DECAL APPLICATION Surfaces MUST be free from dirt, dust, grease and other foreign material before applying the new decal. To apply a solid-formed decal, remove the smaller portion of the decal backing paper and apply this part of the exposed adhesive backing to the clean surface while maintaining proper position and alignment. Slowly peel off the other portion of the backing paper while applying hand pressure to smooth-out the decal surface. To apply a die-cut Decal, first remove the backing paper. Then, properly position the Decal onto the clean mounting surface. After the Decal is firmly applied and smoothly pressed-down, remove the front covering paper.

The Decal Set for the 3210 & 3250 Balers is 127177.
