Always use the complete serial number of the machine when requesting service information or when ordering parts. Early or later models (identification made by serial number) may use different parts, or it may be necessary to use a dif ferent procedure in doing a specific service operation.

DELIVERY REPORT The Delivery Report items must be explained to the owner/operator by the dealer. The dealer is to fill out the form and the owner/operator signs the form to indicate his understanding [C]. Once the delivery report is signed and returned to the factory, the machine warranty begins.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS SAFETY IS THE OPERATOR’S RESPONSIBILITY The Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator is a maneuverable, compact machine. In operation, itis rugged and useful under a wide variety of conditions. This presents an operator with hazards associated with off highway, rough terrain applications. The Hydraulic Excavator has an internal combustion engine with resultant heat and exhaust. All exhaust gases can killcause or illness so the Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator must be run with adequate ventilation.

The dealer explains the capabilities and restrictions of the excavator and attachments for each application. The dealer demonstrates the safe operation of the excavator according to Melroe’s instructional materials; which are also available to all operators. The dealer can also identify unsafe modifications or use of unapproved attachments. The attachments are designed for rated capacity and secure fastening to the Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator. The user must check with the dealer or Melroe Company literature or load diagram to identify safe loads.

The following publications provide information on the safe use of the excavator and attachments: • The Delivery Report is used to check whether complete instructions have been given to the new owner , and that the machine is in safe operating condition.

• The Operation & Maintenance Manual delivered with each Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator gives operating information as well as routine maintenance information. It is part of the machine and must stay with the machine when it is sold.

Replacement Operation & Maintenance Manuals can be purchased from your dealer.

• Every Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator has machine signs (or decals) which instruct on the safe operation and care. The signs and their location are shown in the Operation & Maintenance Manual. Replacement signs are available from your Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator dealer.

• The Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator has a plastic Operator’s Handbook fastened to the operator cab. It’s instructions are convenient to the operator. The handbook is available from your dealer in an English edition or one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Finnish, Danish & Spanish.

• The CIMA safety manual contains information for safe operation and maintenance.

• The Service and Parts Manuals are available from your Bobcat Hydraulic Excavator dealer for use by mechanics todo shop–type service and repair work.

• The dealer and owner/operator review the recommended uses of the excavator and attachments at the time of delivery of the excavator. If change of the use of the excavator occurs, the owner/operator must ask the dealer for recommendations on the new use of the excavator.

SAFE OPERATION NEEDS A QUALIFIED OPERATOR* A QUALIFIED OPERATOR MUST DO THE FOLLOWING:

• UNDERSTAND THE WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS, RULES AND REGULA TIONS • The written instructions from Melroe Company include the delivery report, operator handbook, Operation & Maintenance Manual, CIMA manual and machine signs (decals).

• Check the rules and regulations at your location.

• HAVE TRAINING WITH ACTUAL OPERATION • Operator training must consist of a demonstration and verbal instruction. This training is given by your excavator dealer before the excavator is delivered.

• The new operator must start in an area without bystanders and use all the controls until he can operate the excavator safely under all conditions of the work area.

• KNOW THE WORK CONDITIONS • For each material to be handled, the operator must know how to avoid exceeding the rated lift capacity of the excavator. For example, you should not use the excavator for lifting heavy objects.

• The operator must know any prohibited uses or work areas, for example, he needs to know about excessive slopes.

• Know the location of any underground lines. Call local utilities or ONE CALL before you dig.

• Wear tight fitting clothing. Always wear safety glasses when maintaining or servicing excavator . Safety glasses,

hearing protection or an excavator special application kit are required for some work. See your dealer about Melroe Safety equipment.

* For an operator to be qualified, he must not use drugs or alcoholic drinks which impair his alertness or coordination while working. An operator who is taking prescription drugs must get medical advice to determine if he can safely operate a machine.

Check all of the items on the Service Schedule under the 8 – 10 hour column.

FIRE PREVENTION The excavator has several components that are at high temperature under normal operating conditions. The primary source of high temperatures is the engine and exhaust system. The electrical system, if damaged or incorrectly maintained, can be a source of arcs or sparks. These conditions make it important to avoid applications where explosive dust or gases can be ignited by arcs, sparks or heat.

Flammable debris (leaves, straw, etc.) must be removed regularly . If flammable debris is allowed to accumulate, it will increase the fire hazard. The excavator must be cleaned as often as necessary to avoid this accumulation. This flammable debris in the engine compartment can be a fire hazard when the machine is parked with a hot engine.

The spark arrestor muffler is designed to control the emission of hot particles from the engine and exhaust system, but the muffler and the exhaust gases are still hot. This spark arrestor muffler does not change the need to avoid use of the excavator in an atmosphere with explosive dust or gases or where the exhaust can contact flammable material.

• Do not use the Hydraulic Excavator where explosive dust or gases can be ignited by arcs, sparks, hot components or exhaust gases.

• The engine compartment and engine cooling system must be inspected every day and cleaned if necessary to prevent overheating. Remove all flammable material.

• Check all electrical wiring and connections for damage. Keep the battery terminals clean and tight. Repair or replace any damaged part.

• Do not use ether or starting fluids on any engine which has glow plugs. These starting aids can explode and injure bystanders.

• Check fuel and hydraulic tubes, hoses and fittings for damage and leakage. T ighten or replace any parts that show leakage. Always clean fluid spills.

• Always clean the excavator before doing any welding. Cover rubber hoses, battery and all other flammable parts. Keep a fire extinguisher near the machine when welding.

• Stop the engine and let it cool before adding fuel. No smoking!

• Use the procedure in Operation & Maintenance Manual for jump starting the battery.

GETTING ON AND OFF THE MACHINE

Use the grab handles, the tracks and the safety tread to get on and off the machine [A].

The operator seat can be adjusted as follows: Use the lever (Item 1)[A] to slide the seatback or forward for easy reach of the machine controls.

NOTE: For ease of access to the seat adjusting lever, have the left hand console in the raised position.

The control lock (Item 1) [C] disconnects the hydraulics from the joystick control levers when the left control console is in the raised position. (The joystick control levers will not operate with the console raised).

Lower the control console to engage the joystick control levers [A].

INSTRUMENT PANEL The instrument panel has the following instruments [B]: 1. PREHEAT INDICATOR LAMP – When turning the key switch to the HEAT position, the light comes ON, showing the glow plugs are heating.

2. ENGINE TEMPERATURE LAMP – Overheat indicator, when the engine coolant temperature exceeds the allowable temperature range, the light comes ON and the audible alarm sounds. ST OP the engine.

3. LOW FUEL INDICATOR LAMP – When fuel level is low (1.7 gal. & [6,5 L]), the light comes ON. Add fuel.

When operating in water or crossing streams, first check the soil conditions, depth and flow of water . Never operate in water higher than the bottom of the swing circle.

OPERATING PROCEDURE Breaking In A New Machine When operating on a public road or highway , always follow local regulations. For example: Slow Moving Vehicle Sign or Directional Signals may be required.

A new machine requires careful operation during the first 100 hours to break in various parts.

If a machine is subjected to hard use during the initial operation, the performance and service life will be reduced.

NOTE: Be careful when removing the machine from water. The engine may become filled with water and damage could result.

Do not operate the machine when visibility is poor (fog, mist or smoke).

Do the following when operating a new machine:

If it is necessary to operate the control levers when moving the machine near a clif f, road shoulders, or sloping ground, stop the machine travel before operating any work equipment levers.

•

After starting, let the engine idle for 5 minutes so the engine and components can warm up.

Do not dig under the machine.

•

Avoid operation with heavy loads or at high speeds.

•

Avoid sudden starting or stopping or abrupt motions.

Check with utility companies, for underground electrical, water, gas lines, etc. Work slowly in areas of underground utilities.

Do not move the machine with the bucket in the ground or trench.

Know where the first aid kit and fire extinguisher are and know how to use them. Also know how to contact emergency assistance.

Do not use the bucket as a breaker or pile driver. It is better to excavate hard or rocky ground after breaking it with other equipment. This will reduce damage to the machine.

When operating on uneven ground or in places where there are obstacles, do the following:

•

Operate as slow as possible and avoid sudden changes in direction.

•

Avoid traveling over objects (such as rocks, trees, stumps, etc.).

To brake the machine when going down a slope, put the steering levers in NEUTRAL position. This will engage the hydrostatic braking.

When the engine stops on a slope, move the steering levers to the neutral position. Lower the boom/bucket.

When working in wet or soft ground, put planking on the ground to prevent the machine from getting stuck. If the machine is stuck in soft soil, use the following procedure to move the machine to firm ground: 1. If one track or both tracks are stuck in soft soil, push the bucket down against the ground to raise the track (or tracks, one side at a time) off the ground.

NOTE: The left hand control console must be in the locked down position, with the engine stopped, to activate the accumulator pressure to lower the boom/bucket (attachments) to the ground.

2. Place timber (planks) under the track(s) and drive the machine to firm ground.

NOTE: The key switch must be in the ON position with the engine stopped to activate the accumulator pressure to lower the boom/bucket to the ground.

3. It may help to put the bucket into the ground in front and move the arm as if you were digging to help move the machine.

Start the engine and resume the operation.

RECOMMENDED POSITION FOR WORKING ON A SLOPE

Do not work on slopes which are over 15 degrees.

Slow down the work cycle.

Avoid working with the tracks across the slope as this reduces stability and increases the tendency for the machine to slide. Position the excavator with the blade down hill and lowered.

Avoid swinging or extending the bucket farther than necessary in a down hill direction. When you must swing the bucket down hill, keep the dipper arm low and skid the bucket downhill.

When working with the bucket on the uphill side, keep the bucket as close to the ground as possible. Dump the spoil far enough away from the trench or hole to prevent the possibility of a cave in.

Operating in Water Mud and water should be removed from the machine before parking. If possible, park the machine on boards or concrete to prevent the track or undercarriage from freezing to the ground and preventing machine movement.

Do not operate or immerse the Excavator in water higher than the bottom of the swing circle [A].

Properly grease the Excavator when it has been operated or immersed in water for a period of time.

Water must be removed from the cylinder rods. If water freezes to the cylinder rod, the cylinder seals can be damaged when the rod is retracted.

Make sure the parking brakes on the transport vehicle are engaged and wheels are blocked.

Align the ramps with the center of the transport vehicle.

Secure the ramps to the truck bed and be sure ramp angle does not exceed 15 degrees.

Use metal loading ramps and slip resistant surface.

Make sure the ramps are the correct length and width, and can support the weight of the machine.

The rear of the trailer must be properly blocked or supported when loading or unloader the excavator

Use chain binders to tighten the chains and then safety tie the chain binder levers to prevent loosening.

Opening the Front Window Move the four window latch pins inward and place them in the unlatched position [A].

Grab both window handles and pull the top of the window inward [B].

When the window is over the operators head, lift the bottom of the window upward. The top edge of the window will engage the pocket at the top rear of the cab.

Hold the bottom of the window up and move the two bottom window latch pins outward. Make sure that the pins are secured to the open window latch points [C].

Closing the Front Window Hold the bottom of the window up and move the two window latch pins inward and place them in the unlatched position [C].

When the top of the window moves inward, lift up on the window handles and the window will move up and will pivot inward, over the operators head.

Grab both window handles and pull the bottom of the window downward [B].

When the window is in the down and vertical position, push outward at each corner latch point and move the latch pins into the locked position [A].

Fuel Specifications Use Number 2 diesel fuel in the engine. During very cold temperature, Number 1 fuel can be used.

Open the drain valve (Item 1)[A] at the bottom of thefuel tank.

Drain all water and sediment into a container.

Remove the hose (Item 1) [C] from the filter housing and plug the hose, or firmly squeezethe hose, to eliminate the fuel from siphoning out of the tank when the element is removed.

Remove the fuel filter element (Item 2)[C]. Clean thearea around the filter housing. Put oil on the seal of the new filter element. Install the new fuel filterelement, and hand tighten.

Removing Air From The Fuel System

Loosen the filter bleed screw (Item 3) [C] on the filter housing. Let the fuel gravity feed from the fuel tank until it emerges from the vent, free of air bubbles. Close the bleed screw. The fuel system has an electric fuel pump [D]. Turn the key switch to the ON position (do no start the engine). Leave the key in the ON position for a short period, or until all air is removed from the fuel system.

ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM

Check the engine oil every day.

Stop the engine. Open the engine cover.

Remove the dipstick [A].

Keep the oil level between the marks on the dipstick.

Use a good quality motor oil that meets API Service Classification of CE. (See Fuel, Coolant and Lubricants Chart, Page 52.)

Use the following procedure to change the oil and filter:

Clean the filter housing surface. Put clean grease on the filter gasket. Install the new filter and hand tighten only.

Install and tighten the oil drain plug.

Remove the oil fill cap (Item 1) [D]. Put 6.3 qts. (6,0 L) of oil into the engine. (See Fuel, Coolant and Lubricants Chart & Capacity, Page 52.)

Start the engine and let it run for several minutes. Stop the engine. Check for leaks at the oil filter and the drain plug.

Check the oil level and add oil as needed to bring it to the top mark on the dipstick.

Run the engine until it is at operating temperature.

COOLING SYSTEM

Coolant Level When the engine is cool, the coolant level in the recovery tank (Item 1) [A] must be half full.

If the coolant level is low , add premixed coolant (50% water and 50% ethylene glycol) to the recovery tank.

Coolant Replacement

Do not remove radiator cap when the engine is hot. You can be seriously burned.

Turn the upperstructure so there is access to the engine and radiator from between the tracks. Stop the engine.

Open the radiator drain valve (Item 1) [C] at bottom of radiator.

Drain all the coolant from the system NOTE: Also remove all coolant from the coolant recovery tank (Item 1) [A].

When all the coolant is removed, close the drain valve.

Premix coolant in a separate container.

Ethylene Glycol Add premixed coolant; 50% water and 50% ethylene glycol to the recovery tank if the coolant level is low.

Loosen and remove the radiator cap (Item 1) [B].

Propylene Glycol Add premixed coolant; 43% water and 57% propylene glycol to the recovery tank if the coolant level is low.

One gallon and one pint of propylene glycol mixed with one gallon of water is the correct mixture of coolant to provide a –34°F (–37°C) freeze protection.

NOTE: Do Not mix ethylene glycol and propylene glycol in the same cooling system.

Use a refractometer to check the condition of propylene glycol in your cooling system.

Fill the radiator with the premixed coolant until it is full.

Add coolant to the recovery tank until it is half full.

Run the engine at idle speed for about 5 – 10 minutes to remove the air from the cooling system (leave the radiator cap off during this operation).

Stop the engine. Check the coolant level and add as needed to bring it up to the radiator filler neck. Install the radiator cap and tighten.

ALTERNATOR/FAN BELT ADJUSTMENT

A

To adjust the belt tension, use the following procedure: STOP the engine. Open the engine cover.

The belt should deflect about 1/2 inch (13 mm) when pressed between the water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley with approximately 13 lbs. (58 N) pressure [A].

If the tension is not correct: Remove the seat and the seat mount. (See Manual.)

Loosen the alternator mounting bolt (Item 1) [C].

Loosen the adjustment bolt (Item 2) [C].

Move the alternator until the belt tension is correct.

Tighten the adjustment bolt and alternator mounting bolt.

Replace the belt if it has stretched or there are cracks in the belt. Check the pulley grooves, make sure the belt is not in contact with the bottom of the grooves in the pulleys.

Remove the four bolts and remove the access cover [B].

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

A

The excavator has a 12 volt, negative ground electrical system.

Fuses

1

The fuses are located in the lower part of the right hand control console [A].

Loosen the two knobs (Item 1)[A] and remove the access plate.

1. FUSE – 20 Amp: This fuse supplies power to the key switch [B].

2. FUSE – 10 Amp: This fuse supplies power to the dash panel and the hourmeter [B].

3. FUSE – 15 Amp: This fuse supplies power to the light switch [B].

4. FUSE – 15 Amp: This fuse supplies power to the horn and the heater (if equipped).

Replace the fuses with the same type and capacity.

NOTE: Before replacing any fuse, find and fix the problem that caused the fuse to blow. Make sure the key switch is in the OFF position before replacing the fuse.

Remove the three bolts and remove the right side cover [C].

NOTE: On later model excavators, the start key is used to unlock the cover.

The battery cables must be clean and tight. Remove any acid or corrosion from the battery and cables using a sodium bicarbonate and water solution. Cover the battery terminals and cable ends with battery saver grease [D].

Check for broken or loose connections.

If the battery cables are removed for any reason, disconnect the negative (–) cable first and when installing the battery cables, make the last connection the negative (–) cable to the battery.

With factory equipped battery, no maintenance is needed as this is a maintenance free battery.

Service The Electrical System

If the machine has a Melroe parts replacement battery installed, check the electrolyte level in the battery . (See Battery Manual P/N 6566047 for additional information.)

If it is lower than 1/2 inch (13 mm) above the plates, add distilled water only.

D Batteries contain acid which burns eyes and skin on contact. Wear goggles, protective clothing and rubber gloves to keep acid off body.

In case of acid contact, wash immediately with water. In case of eye contact get prompt medical attention and wash eye with clean, cool water for at least 15 minutes.

If electrolyte is taken internally drink large quantities of water or milk! DO NOT induce vomiting. Get prompt medical attention.

When jump starting the excavator from a battery installed in a second machine. Make sure that the second machine is NOT running while using the glow plugs. High voltage spikes from a running machine can burn out the glow plugs.

Checking and Adding Fluid To check and add hydraulic fluid to the reservoir, use the following procedure: Put the machine on a flat level surface.

Retract the arm and bucket cylinders, put the bucket on the ground and raise the blade. Stop the engine.

Check the hydraulic fluid level, it must be visible in the sight gauge (Item 1) [A] located on the side of the hydraulic reservoir.

If the fluid level is not correct, open the hydraulic tank access door [B].

Check the condition of the fill strainer [C]. The screen must be installed in fill neck when adding oil.

Start the engine. Run the machine through the hydraulic functions. Stop the engine. Check the fluid level at the reservoir and add as needed. Check around the filter for leaks.

Checking Oil Level Put the machine on a flat level surface with the plugs positioned as shown in figure [A].

Remove the top plug (Item 1) [A]. The oil level should be at the bottom edge of the plug hole.

Add gear lube 90W through the hole if the oil level is below the hole. (See Fuel, Coolant and Lubricant Chart, Page 52.)

Install and tighten the plug.

NOTE: The wear of the pins and bushings on the undercarriage vary with the working conditions and the different types of soil conditions. It is necessary to inspect track tension to maintain the correct tension. See SERVICE SCHEDULE Page 27 for the correct service interval.

Adjustment Raise the machine using the boom and arm [A] Raise the blade and install jackstands under the blade and swing frame [A] and [B]. Lower the boom until all machine weight rest on the jackstands.

Description

Ethylene Glycol

When fuel sulphur content is less than 0.5% change the engine oil and filter as shown in the Service Schedule (Page 28).

Add premixed coolant; 50% water and 50% ethylene glycol to the recovery tank if the coolant level is low.

Propylene Glycol

Change engine oil and filter according to the following chart if fuel sulphur content is above 0.5%.

Add premixed coolant; 43% water and 57% propylene glycol to the recover tank if the coolant level is low.

One gallon and one pint of propylene glycol mixed with one gallon of water is the correct mixture of coolant to provide a –34°F (–37°C) freeze protection.

Use a refractometer to check the condition of propylene glycol in you cooling system.

NOTE: Do not mix ethylene glycol and propylene glycol in the same cooling system.

WARRANTY EXCAVATOR

During the warranty period, the authorized selling Melroe Excavator dealer shall repair or replace, at his option, without charge for parts and labor, any part of the Melroe Excavator product which fails because of defects in material and workmanship. The owner shall provide the authorized excavator dealer with prompt written notice of the defect and allow reasonable time for replacement or repair.

Melroe may, at its option, request failed parts to be returned to the factory. Travel time of mechanics and transportation of the Melroe product to the authorized excavator dealer for warranty work are the responsibility of the owner.

Warranty does not cover replacement of scheduled service items such as oil, filters, turn–up parts, and other high–wear items. The warranty does not cover damages resulting from abuse, accidents, alterations, air flow obstructions, or failure to maintain or use the Melroe attachment according to the instructions applicable to it.

THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES (EXCEPT THOSE OF TITLE), EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AND THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORIZED SELLING DEALER OR MELROE BE LIABLE FOR DOWNTIME EXPENSES, LOSS OF MACHINE USE OTHER INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES.
