HYDRAULIC CYLINDER REPAIR (Cont’d) Assembly

The tools listed will be needed to do the following procedure:

MEL1032 – Rod Seal Tool

MEL1009 – Seal Installation Tool (3’’)

Remove the oil seal from the end cap [A]

Remove the teflon seal and the O–ring from the piston [B]

Wash all the parts in clean solvent. Dry with air only. Destroy old seals and O–rings.

Inspect the parts for scratches, nicks, bent, etc. Replace the parts as needed.

Install the piston on the tool [C]

Install the O–ring on the piston using the tool [C]

Install the Teflon seal over the tool and on the piston [D].

NOTE:To prevent damage to the Teflon seal, do not turn it into the piston groove.

Install the piston into the tapered end of the tool to get the Teflon seal to the piston size diameter [D].

Wait 5 minutes so that the Teflon seal will become the same size as the piston.

Install the wiper seal with the lip toward the outside of the end cap [A]

NOTE:The O–ring side of the oil seal goes toward the inside of the cylinder.

Install the seal on the rod seal tool [B]

Install the seal in the end cap [B].

Install the back–up washer and O–ring on the end cap [C]

Lift Cylinder: Install the long stop sleeve.

Remove the piston from the tool and install the piston on the shaft [A].

Install the nut and tighten to the following torque [B]

Lift Cylinder 170–210 ft.–lbs. (230 – 284 Nm)

Tilt Cylinder 470–550 ft.–lbs. (637 – 745 Nm)

Inspect the cylinder barrel bore for scratches.

Put oil on the seal, O–rings and end cap threads [C]

Install the assembly into the cylinder barrel.

Tighten the end cap with the special tool [D].

Push the cylinder rod in and out the full length of the cylinder housing. It must travel freely through the full stroke of the cylinder with no binding.

Base and Rod End Seals

Using a screwdriver, remove the seals from the rod or base end [A] (both sides).

Use the correct size driver and install both seals in therod or base end of the cylinder [B].
