It was with utter disbelief and dismay that, while watching our local news, I learned that at the recent Fraser Coast Council Meeting, a decision had been made to shelve the desperately needed upgrade of Pialba and Torquay Caravan Parks, while alternative options were being considered! What on earth is happening
GET READY to feel the festive spirit as Hervey Bay’s beloved Carols by Candlelight returns on Saturday, December 14th.
This magical evening is not just an event—it is the Fraser Coast’s most attended single-day celebration, and for good reason.
This year promises to be more joyful than ever, bringing families, friends, and the entire community together to celebrate the heartwarming traditions of Christmas.
From 4:00pm, the grounds will come alive with pre-show entertainment, ensuring everyone has something to enjoy from the moment they arrive.
The main event kicks off at 6:00pm, filling the evening air with the enchanting sounds of traditional carols and festive favourites.
in Hervey Bay? Who has taken over the minds of our local council?
It is my belief, silly me, that these councillors were elected by the community to listen to and improve the facilities of said community.
This is obviously not the case here in our beautiful Hervey Bay.
Contrary to what our council would have us believe, the residents have virtually no say in how our part of the world is to be maintained and improved. Petitions against the
building of the totally unnecessary Fraser Coast Regional Council offices and the travesty of the Sheraton Hotel are examples of this. Motions are voted on, passed and that is pretty much the end of it.
What now of our caravan parks?
What is happening to the funds that have already been set aside for the upgrade of Pialba Beach Caravan Park?
What about the plans that have already been submitted and passed, with renovations due to start on the northern
Whether you’re a fan of the classics or just looking for a night of family fun, this is the perfect setting to relax, sing along, and soak in the Christmas spirit.
This festive evening wouldn’t be complete without a special visit from the big man himself, Santa Claus, who will be there to delight kids of all ages.
And as if that wasn’t enough to set hearts aglow, the night will end with a dazzling fireworks display, lighting up the Hervey Bay sky and leaving everyone in awe.
Best of all, entry is completely free, making it a wonderful opportunity for families to come together.

end of the park in late January 2025?
This is a fact because, as well as being residents of Hervey Bay, we are regular visitors to the park, spending four or five days a month there.
We were informed by the manager that we can only stay on the southern side until October of 2025 while the upgrade is in progress. Now that Scarness Caravan Park has been completed, Pialba is next on the list, desperately in need of a facelift.
chairs, pack your favourite snacks, and enjoy a relaxed, community vibe.
It’s a chance to unwind, reconnect, and feel the warmth of the season.
Hervey Bay Carols by Candlelight wouldn’t be the same without the incredible support from our local business community.
Their long-standing commitment ensures this treasured tradition continues to grow and spread joy each year.
Mark your calendar and gather your loved ones for a night of happy vibes, festive cheer, and cherished memories.
Let’s come together as a community to celebrate the magic of Christmas under the stars.
According to Councillor Denis Chapman, I quote, “A key focus for Council is to plan for the future, and effectively manage and maintain our assets, and these projects are an example of how we are working to achieve that for our community.”
So how does putting these upgrades on hold achieve this??
Does our Council have any idea how much our beloved beach caravan parks contribute to tourism in Hervey Bay?
Apart from being a wonderful, affordable way for families to enjoy a holiday, these same families return year after year, shopping at local shops, cafes and restaurants, whale watching, doing trips to Fraser Island, the list goes on, but most of all, many of us return to settle here because it is so unique. Enough is enough! Come on fellow residents of the

Bay, let our councillors know that we are not happy with the way they are making unilateral decisions, and then asking those who dissent to petition against them.
What a joke!
Dear Sir, Councillor
O’Keefe Division 10 and Councillor Crosgrove
Division 6 seem to be pushing for the closing of the Pialba and Torquay Caravan Parks to open up more Parkland.
Point Vernon had a Council Caravan Park at Gataker’s Bay and the Pines had Council Camping Ground which have both been turned into very large Parklands with Toilets, Shelters with BBQ’S, Playgrounds.
At Torquay there was a Neilsen’s Camping Ground that has also been turned into a large Parkland with all
the above amenities across from Madigan’s Fish and Chip Shop. Urangan had Key’s Camping Ground on the Esplanade and a Council Caravan Park at Dayman Point that have also been turned into large Parklands with all the amenities.
Besides these there are many other Parklands along the entire Esplanade that have beach access for Tourist and Locals.
Then you have all the other Parks and Playgrounds all over Hervey Bay in other areas.
Why remove our last two Beachfront Caravan Parks that attract thousands of Tourist and family members of locals a year to enjoy a seaside holiday by the beach.
Tourism is Hervey Bay’s main attraction and with Tourist come people spending money in many of the small businesses along the Esplanade, specially the small business across from the Torquay Caravan Park.
A company was engaged to do master plans for all four Caravan Parks by the Council as they were referred to as important assets by the Council.
Funding for the staged redevelopment of the four Caravan Beachfront Parks has been allocated in the Council’s 10 year Capital Works Program which was stated in their news letter.
The Esplanade is the Tourist area and our business area is in the back Streets like Boat Harbour Drive.
Why can’t the Council see that these Caravan Parks are so important to our Tourism industry and keep the charm of the Esplanade as a beachside holiday destination that attract thousands of tourist who come to stay in them.
Some of our Councillors have been on the Council for over 10 years including the Mayor, so why wasn’t money put aside each budget for these refurbishments that they knew would have to be done and they were going to be costly.
Leave the Caravan Parks alone and hopefully this Council will do the right thing by locals and tourist and refurbish these Caravan Parks.

The project is expected to be completed by 5 December, weather permitting.
THE FRASER Coast is embracing the festive season with Christmas tree light-ups and festive carol events in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the annual Christmas trees in Hervey Bay and Maryborough will be lit later this month, adorned with lights and decorations for all to enjoy.
“Lighting the Christmas tree is a cherished tradition that brings our community together and fills our shared spaces with joy, unity and festive cheer,” he said.
The Hervey Bay Christmas Tree Lighting will be held at City Park in Pialba on Friday, November 29 from 4:30pm to 8pm.
The evening will also feature live music, kids’ activities such as ornament and gingerbread decorating, bracelet making, and colouring in.
The Maryborough Christmas Tree Lighting will take place during the Mary Christmas Street Party at City Hall on Friday, November 22.
In coming weeks, residents and visitors can enjoy Fraser Coast’s Carols by Candlelight events—ideal for relaxing, singing along to favourite Christmas songs, and celebrating the spirit of the season.
“Carols are so important to our community as they bring people together to share in the joy of the season, creating a sense of connection, tradition and celebration that unites us all,” Cr Seymour said.
For the first time, Maryborough’s Christmas Carols will take place at the Brolga Theatre on Sunday, December 8, with two showtimes at 4 pm and 7 pm. Fireworks will follow in the Brolga Theatre car park.
The Hervey Bay Carols by Candlelight will take place on December 14 from 5pm to 8pm at Seafront Oval,
featuring traditional carols, festive songs, a visit from Santa, and a fireworks finale. There are a range of community Christmas events happening across the region from now until Christmas which you can view at: www.frasercoast.qld. gov.au/festive-events

FRASER Coast motorists can now enjoy a safer and smoother journey through one of Hervey Bay’s busiest intersections, with an upgrade of the Boundary Road, Hughes Road and Robert Street intersection completed months ahead of schedule.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Roads spokesperson Denis Chapman said the newly upgraded four-way intersection now has traffic lights and has doubled in width.
“This intersection upgrade benefits three schools –Urangan High, Sandy Straits State School and Star of the Sea Primary School – as well as three childcare centres,” he said.
“The project involved significant work, including excavation, road construction,
new kerb and channel, footpaths, stormwater drainage, traffic lights, asphalt surfacing, line marking, street lighting, signage and turfing.
“We thank everyone for their patience throughout this process. The result is a safer intersection with improved travel times, particularly during peak hours.”
Cr John Weiland said upgrading the intersection was important to cater for the future growth of the Fraser Coast.
“Local contractors Kirbro began work on this project in January with completion initially set for early 2025. We’re grateful for their commitment to delivering this project ahead of schedule and within budget,” he said.
“This upgrade complements
the Boundary Road extension, which opened in August, creating a second major eastwest route through Hervey Bay that links the airport and the medical precinct.
“Council is committed to planning for the future and investing in high-quality public infrastructure to keep pace with growth, and that’s exactly what this project seeks to achieve.”
The project’s first two stages, completed in 2021, involved relocating power lines and electrical infrastructure.
The recent traffic signalisation and road and footpath upgrades marked the final stage of the $9.5 million project, which was partly funded by the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme ($123,263).
FRASER Coast Regional Council is set to trial Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology at three schools and in high-use residential areas to enhance safety for children and residents.
Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott announced that the trial will involve fixed cameras at schools and mobile cameras in residential zones to make school drop-off and pick-up safer.
“School zones are busy, especially during peak times with many children who may not fully grasp road dangers,” he explained. “Council’s Parking Compliance team regularly receives complaints about illegal parking, creating risks for children and drivers. School car parks fall under Council’s regulation, unlike other areas managed by the State Government. Since June 2024, Council has logged 306 parking complaints, averaging 77 per month. Rangers often face confrontations with aggressive parents over parking violations. This technology will help enhance safety and efficiency.”
The School Safe Parking Program aims to reduce traffic congestion, accidents, and promote responsible parking
around schools. The trial will use AI-powered technology to detect and record illegal parking in high-complaint areas.
The initial phase will start at St Helens State School in Maryborough in Term 1, 2025, followed by Hervey Bay State High and Kawungan State School. After camera configurations are confirmed, the full program will roll out by the end of Term 1, 2025.
The Council will also trial a SafePark Mobile Camera Vehicle for inner-city monitoring. This vehicle, operated by a parking officer, includes high-definition
cameras, GPS, and a video processing server to record non-compliance. Violations will be reviewed by an authorised officer to decide if an infringement is warranted.
“This technology has proven effective in other areas like Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, Logan, and Brisbane,” Cr Truscott added. Residents are encouraged to follow parking rules to avoid fines.
Council is also upgrading parking technology at Hervey Bay Airport with new camera monitoring to improve safety and comfort. Visit www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/parkingregulations for more details.

FRASER Coast’s popular water park, WetSide, is turning 15 next month, and the community is invited to dive into the celebrations on Saturday, December 7, from 10 am to 2 pm!
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said this familyfriendly event promises to be a fun-filled day with plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy.
“To mark the milestone, WetSide will be offering free entry into the Ninja Course, allowing guests to test their skills and agility as they navigate the popular obstacle course,” he said.
“Alongside the action, families can enjoy a free BBQ, and free Zooper Doopers to bring a
splash of colour to the day.
“There will also be prize giveaways handed out on the ninja course, a selfie board to capture the fun day and photo opportunities with our new Ninja mascot.
“WetSide is the ultimate destination to cool off this summer,” Cr Seymour said.
“From thrilling waterslides and a dedicated water play area to TotSide for our littlest visitors and the Aqua Ninja Course, we truly have something for everyone.
“The water park recently reopened in September following a series of upgrades, including enhancements to TotSide, electrical and maintenance work, repolishing
of the waterslides, new tables and chairs, and the removal of the damaged boardwalk.
“Since then, we’ve welcomed an impressive 33,100 visits from residents and tourists, setting the stage for an exciting and bustling Christmas season as more people discover our refreshed facilities.”
KMART Australia has launched its 37th annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal in partnership with The Salvation Army, inviting communities to support families in need this Christmas.
Both gifts and monetary donations are welcomed in-store and online until December 24, 2024.
The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, Australia’s largest and longest-running gift collection drive, aims to raise $1 million and collect 400,000 gifts for those in need this holiday season.
To kick off the fundraising, Kmart has donated $100,000, encouraging others to join in and support the cause.
Kmart Hervey Bay’s Wishing Tree Champion, Alisha Gadischke, emphasised the local impact, saying, “The Appeal brings people together in Hervey Bay to spread holiday cheer.”
The community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive, and they look forward to building momentum as Christmas approaches.
Major Bruce Harmer from The Salvation Army highlighted the increasing
demand for support this year, as many families face financial struggles due to the cost-ofliving crisis.
He expressed gratitude for the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, which has been making a difference for over 37 years, helping struggling Australians provide their children with a special Christmas.
Each year, Kmart customers place gifts under the Wishing Tree, brightening the holidays for those in need.
The appeal is about more than just giving—it’s about creating joy, building community, and showing that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.
There are several ways to contribute to the 2024 Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal:
Drop off a new, unwrapped gift at any Kmart store. Practical gifts for older children, like headphones or beauty products, are especially needed.
Donate easily in-store by rounding up your purchase, adding $2 through donation cards, or dropping spare change into collection boxes. Donations can also be made online or through the Wishing Tree QR code found in stores. Every contribution, big or small, helps spread hope and joy to those who need it most this Christmas season.

During this period, I see many people from out of town, interstate or overseas because they have hit a spot of bother.
This is even more important for those who require medications and health conditions.
It can be challenging during this period, as like many businesses your medical centre and pharmacy may have reduced hours, as they too are having a well-deserved break.
Pharmacies often close or have limited hours during public holidays, so refill your prescriptions well in advance.
Many rural areas also have limited pharmacy access, so if you’re heading to remote spots, pack enough medication for the entire stay and bring a bit extra for unexpected delays.

FRASER Coast Regional Council has topped the nation in the Local Government Blood Drive for the second consecutive year, collecting an impressive 225 blood and plasma donations.
Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said Council's contributions had a significant impact, saving up to 675 lives during the Blood Drive, which ran between July 1 and September 30.
"We are incredibly proud that Council has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the community, leading the nation in blood donations," Cr Truscott said.
"This achievement highlights the generosity and dedication of our staff and councillors in supporting this life-saving cause.
“Nationally, over 6,000 donations were collected during the drive, with Queensland Councils securing three of the top five positions.
“The City of Gold Coast followed closely behind Fraser Coast with 221 donations, while Brisbane City Council ranked fourth with 158 donations.”
Lifeblood spokesperson Liam Richardson applauded the efforts of Councillors across Australia and emphasized the ongoing need for donations,
particularly as the holiday season approaches.
“The need for blood is constant, especially during the Christmas period,” Mr Richardson said.
“I congratulate the team members of the Fraser Coast Council who rolled up their sleeves during the Local Government Blood Drive.
“Lifeblood needs 100,000 new donors over the next twelve months to keep up with demand. Every donor has a reason for donating, and we’re asking those who haven’t donated before to find their reason and make their first blood donation.”
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said donated
blood was critical for cancer treatment, emergency surgeries, road trauma victims, and mothers experiencing complications during childbirth.
“With demand for blood ever-present, more donors are needed across the Fraser Coast and beyond,” he said.
“As we look toward the future, I encourage everyone in our community to consider donating—each donation makes a world of difference and could save a life.”

CONSTRUCTION has begun on a $100 million over-50s community in Hervey Bay, with the first stage of homes 90% sold and the next stage already fast-tracked to meet strong demand.
The Liven Beach Road community, which is expected to have 132 homes in total, is one of the latest projects from Liven Communities, a Queensland-based provider of luxury homes and resort-style facilities for people over 50.
A ceremonial sod-turning event held today marked the official start of the project. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour, alongside representatives from Liven Communities and future residents, celebrated the milestone.
The first luxury homes in the land lease community sold out quickly after the project’s launch, prompting the release of a second
stage featuring 18 new homes, priced from $565,000.
Located in Urraween, just 300 metres from Stockland Hervey Bay Shopping Centre, Liven Beach Road is set to offer an impressive range of amenities.
These include more than 1,000 square metres of leisure and entertainment facilities, including a swimming pool, spa, gym, cinema, salon, lounge, BBQ areas, and even a fire pit.
The development will also feature courts for tennis and pickleball, catering to an active and social lifestyle for its residents.
Liven Communities Manager of Developments, Steven Wright, noted the high demand for the project.
“We’ve already received close to 1,000 enquiries,” Wright said, adding that the second stage of
homes had been fast-tracked to meet buyer interest from locals, as well as interstate and international customers.
“Liven is focused on offering something unique, appealing to a younger generation of retirees seeking a blend of luxury, community, and adventure.”
Homes at Liven Beach Road are custom-designed for the community, with buyers able to choose homes tailored to their future needs.
A popular option is a spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom home, which features high-end Smeg appliances, secure garage, ducted air conditioning, and modern finishes, all starting at just $565,000.
The first home slab is expected to be poured before Christmas, with residents anticipated to begin
moving in around mid-2025.
Mayor George Seymour praised the development, calling it a great addition to Hervey Bay’s growing reputation as a desirable retirement destination.
“Projects like Liven Beach Road not only meet the demand for new homes but also provide a lifestyle that promotes recreation, connection, and well-being. This is exactly what Hervey Bay needs to remain an attractive place for retirees.”
Among the early buyers are Gloria Parnell, 75, and her husband Garry, 79.
The couple, who have lived in Scarness for 19 years after moving from Brisbane to escape the city’s hustle, are excited about downsizing from their fourbedroom home into a modern two-bedroom property at Liven
“We didn’t want to move into a typical retirement village,” Gloria explained.
“Liven Beach Road offers the perfect balance—independence and homeownership, but with the added benefit of a community feel.”
Gloria is looking forward to using the gym daily, even though she doesn’t swim, and is eager to meet her new neighbours.
“Hervey Bay is such a lovely place to live,” she said.
“I never thought I’d leave Brisbane, but it was the best decision we ever made.”
The Liven Beach Road community is a short drive from Hervey Bay’s Esplanade, with cafes, restaurants, and beaches just minutes away.
For those who enjoy the outdoors, Urangan Pier and the Boat
Harbour are only 15 minutes from home.
The development uses a land lease model, which makes home ownership more affordable and accessible.
Buyers save on upfront costs with no entry or exit fees, no stamp duty, and the ability to keep any capital gains when selling their home.
Residents will also have access to a community app, which will allow them to book amenities, submit maintenance requests, discover local discounts, and stay connected with fellow residents.
For more information about Liven Beach Road, potential buyers can visit the Liven Communities website, call the team at 1300 677 023, or visit the display at Stockland Hervey Bay Shopping Centre, opposite Coles.

Mayor George Seymour said the Fraser Coast CommuniTea Set project aims to build community resilience, reduce social isolation and support community recovery through a series of art workshops.
“Over the next three months, community-based art workshops will be held across the Fraser Coast, where professional artists will guide participants in creating art that represents the unique spirit of their communities and tells a visual story of the region,” he said.
“The saying ‘a cup of tea can solve anything’ is at the heart of this project, which focuses
on connection and support.

AN EXCITING time is approaching. At the end of November, the 25th birthday of Mary Ann will be celebrated with a party on Sunday, December 1, at the Maryborough Goods Shed behind the old railway station.
Mary Ann’s story dates back over 150 years, to 1873, when she was built by John Walker & Co. for sawmill owners William Pettigrew and William Sims. She hauled Kauri pine logs from Tin Can Bay to the Mary River, where they were towed upriver by the paddle steamer Hercules. After several years, she was replaced by a stronger locomotive, Dundathu, and became a stationary engine at the sawmill. Unfortunately,
the sawmill was destroyed by a fire, and Mary Ann was believed to be lost. However, that was not the case. A century later, engineer Peter Olds, inspired by the original, dreamed of building a replica. Armed with engineering knowledge and two photographs of the original, he set out to create a small model. This dream grew into a full-size replica, and in the late 1990s, he and his friends constructed it. On November 29, 1999, Mary Ann steamed up and began carrying passengers.
For the past 25 years, Mary Ann has proudly hauled passengers along the Maryborough Wharf Branch

LOCAL BUSINESS SUPPORTING LOCAL COMMUNITY
Platinum Property Fraser Coast, together with Wide Bay Motor Group, was filled with gratitude to present a $1,000 cheque to Fraser Coast Mates, supporting their invaluable mental health intervention services. This contribution is a testament to both companies’ deep commitment to the Fraser Coast.
Platinum Property Principal, Guy Meredith said, “Real estate is not a brand; it’s about community, your home, and where you choose to live your life—and that is incredibly important.”
“It’s a joy to be able to give back to the region that supports us, lifting up those who need it most.”
Both businesses are inspired by the spirit of community, knowing that when we come together to support important causes, we can create a brighter, more compassionate future for everyone.
This collaboration reflects a shared vision of making a positive impact where it counts— right here, in the heart of our community.
A STUNNING eagle crafted from recycled cutlery captured the spotlight at the Waste to Art Exhibition, which opened at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the popular annual exhibition, launched on Friday, 15 November, saw a record-breaking 151 entries across five categories, including a newly introduced Outdoor Category and a prize pool of $4,500.
“This event challenges how we see waste, showcasing artists’ creativity as they transform everyday items into incredible artworks,” he said.
The top prize in the Over 18s category went to Ariel Betiz for his impressive piece ‘Eagle and her Nest’, a one-metrewide, over 20-kilogram eagle sculpture created from welded recycled cutlery.
ingenuity and craftsmanship seen across all entries this year, demonstrating how household items can be repurposed into powerful art,” Cr Seymour said.
In the 8–11-year-old category, Archer Lorenz claimed first prize with ‘Recycled Existence: A Posthuman’s Last Hope’, an artwork depicting a future world shaped by pollution and environmental decay.
“I used recycled rocks, glass, old toys, computer parts, and mirrors to show what might happen if we keep polluting the earth,” Archer said.
Rebecca Hoyes was awarded third prize in the Over 18’s category for her work “Scruffy and Sherbet (Leafy Sea Dragons) after entering for the competition for the 7th year.
“I really love sea dragons and how they move through
WOULD
“This piece took me six months to complete using a combination of recycled children’s toys, milk bottles and various plastic materials.” For the first time Council included a new Outdoor Sculpture Category to accommodate larger works that are too big to be displayed in the gallery space.
Rosemary Anderson for ‘The Ballet Class’ was the winner for her outdoor piece which stood 1.7m high and 4 metres wide.
“This piece features bench swivel chairs, whirligigs, motor parts and paint which I sourced from various places including the Maryborough Tip Top Shop,” Ms Anderson said.
Cr Seymour said the entries were very creative this year and he was impressed with the quality and message behind
Now in its seventh year, this annual competition and exhibition requires all works to be made from recycled or re-purposed items and materials sourced from Fraser Coast Regional Council Reuse Markets, op shops or secondhand shops on the Fraser Coast.
“It’s purpose is to change the way we look at waste and spark conversations on how we could be recycling and repurposing better as a community,” Cr Seymour said.
“The total prize pool was increased this year to $4500 thanks to our generous sponsors – Hyne Timber, Cleanaway, Reuse and Recycle Group, and Nugrow, with the first prize winner receiving $1,500 – up from $1000 last year.”
The Waste to Art exhibition is now on display at Gatakers Artspace until Sunday 5 January, 2025 and entry is free.
Gatakers Artspace is open
Tuesdays to Fridays 9.30am to 3.30pm and weekends 9.30am
to 2pm.
Visitors are invited to participate in the People’s Choice Award by voting for their favourite artwork in the exhibition. Simply visit Gatakers to view the pieces and cast your vote in the ballot box on-site.
The People’s Choice Award winner will be announced in the second week of January. For more information go to www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ waste-to-art

CAMERON Thomas has faced his share of highs and lows, but lately, life has been looking up for him and his family, especially in business.
If you haven’t heard of RAD Rolled Ice Cream, it’s likely because you haven’t been out much!
Starting from a trailer, the business served its first ice cream on October 7, 2023, and quickly gained a loyal following at events around the Fraser Coast.
Securing a spot at the old Shark Show site in Urangan boosted their visibility and going live on TikTok in February helped bring even more attention, gathering crowds and followers.
A dream came true for Cameron and his wife Cristel recently when they opened their own shop next to Pier Village Café in Urangan, creating jobs for seven locals and giving the business a solid base.
Their TikTok efforts paid off too— they’re now finalists for TikTok’s “Live Creator of the Year” award, with the ceremony set for late November at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.
Cameron and his 15-year-old son Angus will make the trip with their trailer in tow.
RAD Rolled Ice Cream also won “Best New Business” at the Fraser Coast Business and Tourism Awards—a rewarding outcome for the hardworking couple.
Brisbane-born, Cameron grew up on his family’s 300-hectare farm in Boonah, where he spent weekends mustering cattle with his dad and working with prized Limousin cattle for shows.
After leaving school in grade ten, he studied at Longreach Pastoral College, where he focused on wool classing and shearing and spent time in the bush doing woolshed work.
But city life called, and he returned to Brisbane, taking a wool classing job and eventually setting off on an eight-month European adventure with his brother.
They worked at Belushi’s Bar and Grill in Shepherd’s Bush, London.
The job interview was lively—the manager asked if they’d take a shot with a customer, and Cameron cheerfully said, “Why not!”
Then, when asked if he’d jump on the bar to dance when the Belushi theme song played, Cameron eagerly agreed.
They got the job, learning to toss bottles to make cocktails and loving every minute of the high-energy, fun environment.
Back in Australia, Cameron built a sixteen-year career in security, working locally and abroad.
He has also run an earth-moving business and served as an Auxiliary
Firefighter.
Over the years, he’s worn many hats, but one of his favourite roles was as a radio announcer with Triple M in Hervey Bay.
During his time there, tragedy struck when his best friend Scott Cabrie, an Uber driver and radio colleague, was murdered on an Uber job.
The loss devastated Cameron and the whole community and Cameron still hopes that justice will be done.
This tragedy became a turning point. Cameron and Cristel had already been considering a rolled ice cream business, a concept they found both fun and unique.
After Scottie’s passing, Cameron focused on RAD Rolled Ice Cream which gave him a positive outlet and a fresh start.
The venture was a success and a chance to bring something new to the Fraser Coast.
They have even named an ice cream after Scottie who is never far from Cameron’s thoughts.
Family is at the heart of Cameron’s life. His wife, Cristel, has been his unwavering support through everything.
“We’ve been through so much together, and everything we do is for our kids’ future,” he says.
Cameron has a 23-year-old stepson, Baily, a 15-year-old son, Angus, and a 7-year-old daughter, Gracie, all of whom he’s incredibly proud of.
He and Cristel hope the business will one day be something their children can take over, creating a lasting legacy.
Eleven years into their life in Hervey Bay, Cameron and Cristel feel a deep love for the Fraser Coast community and gratitude for its support.
Together, they’re building not just a business, but a future for their family.
