Let's start a conversation

Having moved here from the Gold Coast I was disappointed in councils’ decision to approve the Sheraton project and now talking about removing the caravan park for “the people”.

Sorry I just don’t buy it, there’s plenty of people space along the esplanade’s just cut the grasses.

Provide parking and they will come and stop pandering to monied developers.

Hervey Bay is unique it shouldn’t become another Gold Coast. Regards

I read with much interest

The Publisher’s Point (Advertiser 6/3/25)

The first thought that entered my head was, how many “young Australians” would have $50K’s in their super fund?

While having no claim to being a mathematician, I decided very few.

I then asked myself, would $50Ks get you into a house or unit?

Again, I’d suggest not.

Add to this, the reason for the National Superannuation Scheme in the first place, yes that’s right, it was to reduce

the pressure on the national coffers to fund pensions into the future.

As Australia’s population ages, so the cost of pensions will increase.

But you are right, the government of the day could increase all forms of taxation to cover such increases.

Sadly, Polly Talk like this is just a classic case of “come in spinner”.

I doubt even “young Australian’s” will fall for this.

Using my super for a house just doesn’t make sense to me.

Superannuation is meant to be something I rely on for my future, for when I retire and no longer have an income.

Tapping into it now to buy a house feels like I’m robbing my future self just to meet a short-term goal.

Also, there are so many other options to get into the housing market without needing to dip into my super.

in the future.

Re the subject of $50000 superannuation being used by first home owners; it’s a wellknown fact the average time to move house in Australia is every seven years.

Taking that fact into account, yes allow this to happen.

House prices never go down and someone who takes that money out of super can deposit it back slowly by renovating said house and on selling.

I know various people who flip houses regularly and by buying in the best area you can achieve a handsome profit.

The recent changes to caravan parks in Hervey Bay are disappointing.

Plus, I should be able to access my super whenever I want because it’s my money.

We work hard for it, so why should there be restrictions on when and how we can use it?

It’s about having the freedom and flexibility to make the best financial decisions for myself, now and

Long time visitors and residents feel pushed out by rising fees and reduced facilities.

Once a laid back, affordable destination, it’s now losing its charm.

The community’s concerns seem ignored, leaving many questioning if tourism profits matter more than loyal guests.

TICKETS & TOURS

If they want more tourism the first step would be to have cleaners who clean the public toilets. The ones at Scarness are a disgrace and the smell is horrific.

Some disinfectant wouldn’t go astray. Unfortunately, the public have to use them at times, they don’t have a choice. They are the only ones also where you can change into your swimmers.

The train that went to the bay through Churchill mines from Maryborough would have been a prime tourism idea they have lost a lot of money from.

Loss of industry also over the years could have served as tour stop spots if preserved, flour mill, sugar mill, shipping yard, original Sauers pie shop with wood fired stoves, boat tours from the port jetty, timber mill history tours.

So much lost over the years. Recently lost doll house museum due to extensive cost of fees. We really need more farms here in Maryborough they have all gone too.

Absolutely well said. So much is outsourced to the Wide Bay/Bundy and further south to the big smoke when

we have excellent top skilled people right here on the Fraser Coast.

They used to do these events but since FCTE became a mates first closed door hush hush organisation the locals have been pushed out and their mates from afar hired in.

The events are lacking, your right in that they don’t test the waters, they don’t publicise it right, they don’t listen to the people and we end up with festivals with more food trucks than participants.

Time to shake it right up!

The FCTE has been a closed shop. Transparency needs to be key moving forward.

I also want to know who the external tourism consultants are, what is their expertise and how much they are costing and how long have they been given.

Was this an open contract and are there any conflicts of interest?

A review could be done by inviting all stakeholders and working out shopping future needs and budget allocations.

$1.6 million doesn’t buy you much but if the stakeholders feel included more money will be contributed. I look forward to be included in any review as does all tourism affiliated

businesses and ratepayers.

Interesting article and it is surely a subject that will arouse emotive comment from a cross section of the community.

Any consultant worth the money they will be paid should approach the task by looking at the big picture of Tourism provision from the top down nationally and at state level.

One thing for sure is that the landscape changes constantly.

There is a lot at play compared to where Fraser coast was 20 years ago, when we had three major tour operators running trips to Fraser Island daily, we had 13 hostels with seven of them running tagalong tours to Fraser Island, we had a lot more operators contributing to marketing this region we never had the whale watching competition up and down the east coast of Australia.

Back in the good days the operators had a say in how tourism was evolved in this town.

I know the funding FCTE do get, they cannot compete with the majors, if council really wants to do something, invest in tourism, because $1,6m does not get you much…

RESIDENTS and businesses across the Fraser Coast are being encouraged to have their say on the future of local events as the Fraser Coast Regional Council continues to develop its Regional Events Strategy.

Councillor Sara Diana Faraj highlighted the importance of events in fostering community connections, celebrating culture, and stimulating economic growth.

“Events connect us – they showcase our region’s diversity, create shared experiences, and bring visitors to the Fraser Coast,” Cr Faraj said.

“With world-class natural areas and unique venues, the Fraser Coast has the perfect backdrop for outstanding events. When visitors come here for events, they spend money at our local businesses, stay in our accommodation, and help create local jobs.”

The Council is actively seeking community feedback to better understand which events residents value most and what they would like to see more of in the region. Cr Lachlan Cosgrove emphasised the Council’s commitment to fostering an event-friendly environment that benefits both tourism and the local economy.

“We’re seeking input from

residents, businesses, and event organisers to help shape the future of the events landscape,” Cr Cosgrove said.

“What events do you love? What would you like to see more of? What makes an event great? Where should events be held?

“We also want to understand the role the community believes Council should play in events.”

To ensure everyone has a voice, residents can participate by completing a short survey available on the Council’s Engagement Hub website at https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/

events-2025. The survey will remain open until 24 March.

In addition to the public consultation, the Council will also engage directly with event organisers to gain insights into the current state of the local event industry.

“This engagement will help refine our approach for the next two years while we work towards developing a more comprehensive, long-term strategy for 2026,” Cr Faraj said.

The Council encourages all community members to share their thoughts and help shape a vibrant and dynamic event culture on the Fraser Coast.

THE FRASER Coast

Regional Council has approved a plan to reduce speed limits along key sections of the Hervey Bay Esplanade, aiming to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

The decision, made at a recent council meeting, will create a more consistent traffic environment while addressing growing concerns about safety in one of the region’s most visited areas.

Under the new plan, speed limits will be lowered along several sections of the Esplanade, including:

• From Hervey Street to Robert Street, reducing from 50 km/h to 40 km/h

• From Elizabeth Street to Pier Street, and Pier Street from Esplanade to King Street (Urangan), also reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.

The council has indicated that further reductions will be evaluated in the future, with the goal of ultimately reducing the speed limit along the Esplanade from Beach Road to Pier Street to 40 km/h as infrastructure improvements are rolled out.

Councillor Zane O’Keefe, who represents the region, highlighted that the changes align with the Esplanade

Master Plan Guideline, which prioritises pedestrian safety and connectivity.

“The Hervey Bay Esplanade is one of our most popular areas, drawing high levels of vehicle and foot traffic as people access parks, businesses, and recreational spaces,” he said.

“Currently, there are a mix of speed zones, and creating a more consistent approach will improve safety for everyone.”

A recent review of crash data over the past five years revealed 40 reported incidents on the Esplanade, including nine involving pedestrians.

These numbers underscore the need for the proposed changes, which aim to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.

Cr O’Keefe stressed that these measures were a “practical step” toward enhancing the liveability of the Fraser Coast region.

The council will now forward the proposed changes to the Speed Management Committee for approval, with implementation expected in the coming months.

Future speed reductions will be assessed as supporting infrastructure is introduced.

CREATIVITY is set to shine once again as Fraser Coast Libraries’ beloved Design-a-Bookmark competition makes its return.

Residents of all ages are invited to participate and have their artwork displayed and shared with the community.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour highlighted the competition as an exciting chance for budding artists to showcase their talents.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to express themselves creatively and see their work professionally printed,” he said.

“Last year’s winning designs featured intrigue, vibrance, joy, and plenty of fungi—what unique creations will emerge this year?”

The competition, which officially opened in March, offers winners not only the recognition of having their bookmarks distributed across Fraser Coast libraries but also a $50 Fraser Coast Gift Card. A special awards ceremony will be held in May to celebrate the winners.

Winning bookmarks will be professionally printed and made available for free at Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard, and Burrum Heads libraries.

Councillor Daniel Sanderson noted the growing popularity of the event, with last year’s competition receiving 257 entries across five age categories. The newly introduced

60+ category proved to be a particular success.

“This year, there’s no set theme, and winners will be chosen based on originality, creativity, and reproducibility,” Cr Sanderson said.

“Residents will also have the chance to vote for their favourite design in the People’s Choice Award, which attracted over 1,000 votes last year.”

The competition is divided into five age categories:

• 6 years and under

• 7 to 11 years

• 12 to 17 years

• 18 to 59 years

• 60+ years

To enter, participants must be members of Fraser Coast Libraries.

Membership is free and can be

completed online at https://www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/librariesmemberships.

Entry forms are available at any Fraser Coast Libraries branch or can be downloaded from the Council’s website at www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/designbookmark.

“We’re thrilled to see this competition continue to grow, celebrating the incredible creativity within our community,” Mayor Seymour added.

Entries close on Thursday, April 17, with winners to be announced in May.

Public libraries are a partnership between Local Government and the Queensland Government through the State Library of Queensland.

A MAJOR step in marine conservation has begun this week with the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) leading the construction of a dedicated research and rehabilitation centre for sick and injured sea turtles in Hervey Bay.

The centre aims to address the rising number of turtle strandings and illnesses in the region while incorporating Indigenous knowledge into conservation efforts.

The ‘UniSC Milbi Centre – Sea Turtle Research and Rehabilitation’ will serve as a hub for critical research and rescue efforts, with strong cultural significance and collaboration with the Butchulla people.

UniSC Vice-Chancellor

Professor Helen Bartlett highlighted the centre’s location and its connection to Indigenous heritage.

“Milbi is the Butchulla word for sea turtle, and the Dayman Park site holds great cultural significance for the Butchulla people,” Professor Bartlett said. She emphasised that Butchulla knowledge, cultural advice, and traditional protocols would play an integral role in shaping the centre’s goals, ensuring conservation efforts align with community values.

Professor Bartlett visited the site alongside key partners, and the initiative secured significant government backing, including $250,000 in federal funding and an additional $1.17 million from the Queensland Government.

“The support from all levels of government—federal, state, and local—demonstrates the importance of protecting our threatened sea turtles,” Professor Bartlett said.

The centre, set for completion mid-year, will transform a disused scout hall into a stateof-the-art facility featuring a specialised life support system and both indoor and outdoor

rehabilitation tanks.

These facilities will allow turtles to receive local treatment before being released back into the ocean, easing pressure on existing facilities.

The construction comes at a critical time, as extreme weather events have underscored the vulnerability of marine wildlife. Since 2022, turtle strandings and deaths have reached unprecedented levels, with over 1,400 turtles rescued and 360 requiring transport to distant care facilities.

“There has also been an increase in diseased turtles, with many suffering from a new soft-shell syndrome,” she said. “UniSC researchers are working to determine the cause.”

Scientists suspect environmental stressors such as rising ocean temperatures, pollution, and habitat degradation may be contributing factors. Research at the Milbi Centre will be key to identifying the disease’s causes and finding solutions.

The centre will not only focus on rehabilitation but will also drive research on strandings, disease outbreaks, and climate change impacts.

With six of the world’s seven sea turtle species found in the region, its work is expected to have global significance.

Butchulla Native Title

Aboriginal Corporation

General Manager Veronica

Bird praised the initiative, welcoming Indigenous and scientific collaboration.

“Milbi are of cultural and spiritual significance to the Butchulla People,” Bird said.

“Combining science with traditional knowledge will provide a way forward to protect our turtles.”

The project is part of the Hinkler Regional Deal, aimed at fostering economic growth in the Hervey Bay-Bundaberg region. By creating jobs in marine science, animal care, and environmental research, the centre is expected to have lasting economic benefits while advancing conservation.

Ongoing funding and community support will be crucial to ensuring its success.

Professor Bartlett emphasised that continuous investment from government bodies and the public will be key in maintaining operations and expanding research.

“This facility represents hope for our marine life,” she said. “It will allow us to take immediate action in rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles.”

With its unique blend of scientific research, Indigenous wisdom, and community involvement, the UniSC Milbi Centre is poised to become a world-class facility dedicated to protecting sea turtles and preserving the marine ecosystem for generations to come.

FRASER Coast pet lovers, get ready—Dogs Day Out is just around the corner!

The much-anticipated event will take place at Brendan Hansen Park in Maryborough on Sunday, April 13, from 8 am to midday, promising a fun-filled morning for dogs and their owners alike.

This year, the Fraser Coast Regional Council is expanding its desexing rebate to coincide with the event.

Throughout April, all residents—not just Queensland concession card holders— can claim a $100 rebate for desexing their dog or cat.

Councillor Michelle Byrne highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership and encouraged pet owners to take advantage of the offer.

“Desexing helps reduce unwanted litters, roaming, and aggressive behaviour, as

well as lowering the risk of health issues,” she said. “To secure the rebate, book your pet in with a vet early to avoid missing out.”

Dogs Day Out will feature market stalls with pet products and care information, free microchipping, and complimentary first-time dog registration.

Attendees can also take part in competitions, including bestdressed dog, best dog trick, and an owner-dog look-alike contest.

A variety of local pet businesses will be on-site, offering products and services tailored to pet owners. There will also be opportunities to speak with animal experts about training, health, and nutrition.

Cr Daniel Sanderson encouraged the community to come along and enjoy the

event, “This is a paw-some day to celebrate our furry friends, socialise our dogs, and learn more about responsible pet ownership,” he said.

“It’s also a chance to connect with other pet owners and create a strong, supportive petloving community.”

While Expressions of Interest for local businesses to participate have now closed, residents can still make the most of the day by attending with their pets and enjoying the activities on offer. The event is free to attend, making it a perfect outing for the whole family.

For more details on the desexing rebate or event activities, visit the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s website at www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ dogs-day-out.

A Hervey Bay event is also planned for October.

FRASER Coast Motor Centre has been awarded the Ford’s President Award as the number one Ford Dealership in Regional Australia.

In a coup for our region, Fraser Coast Ford was voted the best from an overall pool of more than one-hundred and fifty dealerships nationally.

“We are the oldest Ford dealership in the country and to be given this award is a huge testament to our dedicated staff and our valued customers,” Dealer Principal Dan Foley said.

“What is unique to a dealership like ours, is that we have multiple businesses within a business.”

“We have a new car business, a pre-loved car business, a finance, service and parts business. They all

operate as an individual business.”

“To win the Dealer of the Year Award, you need to win in each of those categories, month-to-month.

Consistency of service delivery is the cornerstone of it all.”

Since joining Fraser Coast Motor Centre as the Dealer Principal, Dan has focussed on key areas to ultimately provide a greater customer experience.

“We have really focussed on two things. On ourselves and also on the community.”

“We have fifty-three staff members here and investing in their growth as individuals is paramount.”

“Our customers are our business and that doesn’t just mean our retail car sale customers. Our manufacturing partners are

customers, our trade partners are customers, our fleet partners are customers and our service clients are customers.”

“For us, it’s all about creating unforgettable experiences. When a customer leaves with a smile, that’s the real reward. Everything else follows from that genuine connection.”

“Awards are great, but they’re the byproduct of consistent excellence. It’s not about chasing recognition— it’s about doing the work, day in and day out, to set the standard.”

“Giving back to the community that supports us is one of the most fulfilling parts of owning a business. The relationships we build go beyond transactions—they’re about making a positive impact.”

HERVEY Bay Regional Gallery is set to launch its 2025 season with three compelling solo exhibitions by female artists connected to the Fraser Coast, exploring themes of motherhood, ancestral connections, and resilience.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the official opening will also unveil an expanded ‘National Interests’ exhibition, featuring iconic works on long-term loan from the National Gallery of Australia.

The three solo exhibitions, featuring works by Natalie Lavelle, Emma Thorp, and Joyce Watson, were officially launched by Adam Lindsay, Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Australia, at the opening event.

“Emma Thorp’s exhibition, ‘The In Between’, explores the delicate balance between motherhood and artistic practice. Using humour and vibrant storytelling, Emma transforms everyday domestic tasks into creative expressions of the challenge to carve out time for art.”

Arts and Culture spokesperson

Sara Diana Faraj said Natalie Lavelle’s ‘In the Making’ marks her first major exhibition on the Fraser Coast.

“Natalie grew up in Hervey Bay, and we’re thrilled to showcase her latest collection, which explores the sensory experience of painting through colour, form, and texture,” she said.

“Aunty Joyce Watson's exhibition, ‘Family and Country, many people's stories,’ delves into her ancestral ties to Waanyi Country in North West Queensland, highlighting themes of endurance and connection through various mediums.

“This deeply personal exhibition weaves together new and existing works across textiles, sculpture, bronzes, drawing, and printmaking.”

‘In the Making’, ‘The In Between’ and ‘Family and Country, many people’s stories’ are on display at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery from 1 March to 11 May 2025.

Cr Seymour said the Fraser Coast has a colourful and vibrant cultural life, and Council is committed to ensuring the community has opportunities to appreciate arts, heritage and cultural diversity.

“Alongside these three ambitious

exhibitions will be the ‘National Interests: Australian Art in the 20th Century’ exhibition, which explores the cultural legacy of modern Australia, pairing artworks from the gallery’s collection with significant pieces from the National Gallery of Australia,” he said.

“This exhibition spans six decades, from 1936 to 1997, showcasing how Australian artists have responded to history, change and the search for a national identity.

“We’re excited to kick off the 2025 season with such powerful exhibitions and encourage the community to explore the thoughtprovoking and powerful works on display.”

THE FRASER Coast CommuniTea Set is ready to be unveiled, with five beautifully designed tea sets celebrating the resilience, creativity, and unique identities of Fraser Coast communities.

The tea sets, featuring designs inspired by themes of love, sailing boats, sea life, and Indigenous symbols, were created through a series of community art workshops held across the region.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Communities spokesperson Michelle Govers said the project had been a powerful way to bring people together, fostering resilience and recovery through art and storytelling.

“Over the past few months, we’ve hosted nine workshops from Glenwood to Poona, where local artists have come together to create designs that capture the unique spirit and visual identity of their communities,” she said.

“From these workshops, over 50 standout designs were selected and carefully handpainted onto tea sets.

“The images on these tea sets are very personal to the area in which the artists live, symbolising the connections and friendships that make our region stronger.”

From next week, residents can view the tea sets at a special showcase event:

WE ARE all living in this fast-paced world where convenience often trumps well-being. The question arises: If you could make one change to your lifestyle for better health, what would it be?

Understanding that health is not just the absence of illness, but a holistic balance of physical, mental, and emotional well-being, we can begin to appreciate the transformative power of small lifestyle adjustments.

Imagine defining your own health. For some, it may mean achieving a healthy weight, while for others, it might involve managing stress or enhancing mental clarity.

Recognising that our definitions of good health vary helps us pinpoint the changes we prioritise. So, what barriers stop you from making these changes? Identifying these obstacles is the first step toward overcoming them.

Let’s explore five actionable steps toward a healthier lifestyle. First, consider your nutrition. Incorporating

more fruits and vegetables into your meals can greatly boost your energy levels and overall immunity. Start simple—consider swapping out sugary snacks for healthier alternatives.

Next, prioritise physical activity. Movement should be a celebration of what your body can do, not a chore you dread. It’s important to find activities that you enjoy, whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or cycling. If you carry injuries or have health concerns, consult with a medical practitioner or physical therapist to determine

safe and beneficial exercises for your situation. Remember, not moving can exacerbate injuries and negatively impact your mental well-being. Regular movement boosts endorphins, leading to improved mood and reduced stress.

Incorporating gentle stretches or low-impact activities keeps your body engaged and promotes recovery, fostering a sense of achievement and joy in the process.

Finally, make time for regular reflection. Assess your goals and progress periodically, remembering that even small changes can have significant impacts over time.

As you navigate your path to wellness, reflect on this: If you could, would you take that first step toward a healthier, happier you? Embrace the journey; the possibilities are endless!

THE SPIRIT of empowerment and progress echoed throughout the Hervey Bay Boat Club on Saturday, 8 March, as the Zonta Club of Hervey Bay hosted its annual International Women’s Day Breakfast.

With the theme “March Forward,” the event brought together a diverse group of 100 participants, including representatives from government, not-for-profit organisations, businesses, and educational institutions, all united in the shared mission of advancing gender equality.

The morning was marked by an inspiring panel discussion featuring three formidable women in local government: Councillors Michelle Byrne, Michelle Govers (Division 5 –Fraser Coast), and Sara Diana Faraj (Division 9 – Fraser Coast).

These trailblazers captivated the audience with their candid accounts of their journeys to leadership,

shedding light on the challenges faced by women striving to make their mark in male-dominated spaces.

Breaking Barriers and Marching Forward

Through heartfelt personal stories, the panellists acknowledged the significant strides made towards gender equality but emphasised that the journey is far from over.

Issues such as breaking the glass ceiling, closing the gender pay gap, and ensuring the safety of women and girls remain at the forefront of the fight for progress.

Echoing this sentiment, Councillor Sara Diana Faraj highlighted the

each other, when we challenge biases, and when we refuse to accept the status quo,” she said.

A Call to Action: Empower, Educate, Lead

“It’s not just about reaching leadership positions; it’s about making sure we create an environment where women feel safe,

importance of supporting and mentoring young women, ensuring that future generations inherit a landscape where equality is not just an aspiration, but a reality.

“Change happens when we uplift

The Zonta Club of Hervey Bay has long been an advocate for gender equality, and this annual event serves as a reminder of both the achievements and the work that still lies ahead.

Club President Michelle Lockwood delivered a stirring address, urging attendees to take an active role in shaping a more equitable society.

“We don’t have to be in a position of power to make a difference,” Lockwood emphasised.

“Change happens in our daily lives—through the conversations

we have, the way we support one another, and the moments when we challenge stereotypes, demand better policies, and create spaces where women feel valued and heard.”

Attendees left the event inspired and motivated to continue the march forward, recognising that true progress requires collective effort, determination, and a willingness to challenge systemic barriers.

As the Zonta Club of Hervey Bay continues its advocacy and initiatives to uplift women and girls, events like these serve as powerful reminders of what can be achieved when a community comes together in pursuit of a common goal.

The call to action was clear: it’s time to step up, lead, and keep marching forward toward a future where gender equality is not just an ideal, but a reality for all.

MATTHEW Rochow is a 35-yearold entrepreneur, with an interest in technology and IT, realising early on its vast potential, from gaming and making money to problem-solving.

While he initially thought he’d venture into business, he gravitated toward web development instead, taking a hands-on approach, teaching himself coding and gradually building his skills.

Since finishing school Matthew has run his own business called Infinity Web Development which specialises in programming and has contracts in the U.S., Canada, and the UK.

He even manages a team of overseas developers too.

Matthew likens coding to learning a new language, explaining that programming is essentially translating English instructions into functional commands.

In his view, if you can logically

articulate a process in plain English, such as describing a button’s function, you can write it in code.

With AI rapidly evolving, he’s intrigued by its ability to automate this translation process.

However, he doesn’t believe AI will drastically impact job markets.

While automation might replace certain roles, he sees it as part of a natural cycle where new industries and job opportunities will appear.

Born in Brisbane in 1989, Matthew’s family moved to Hervey Bay when he was nine, following his grandparents, who had already settled in the area.

His grandfather, a builder, played a role in shaping the town, helping construct the Hervey Bay PCYC in the late ’90s and later contributing to the university and various other projects.

Matthew credits his parents with

instilling the values of hard work and long-term goal setting.

His first job, however, had nothing to do with IT, it was a brief stint in a fast-food shop, lasting only a couple of months.

Outside of work, Matthew leads an active lifestyle and has always enjoyed sports.

During his school days, he played touch football, cricket, and soccer, later adding tennis, badminton, golf, squash, and pickleball to his list.

These days, he primarily focuses on tennis and pickleball, enjoying the competitive, social, and fitness aspects of the games.

His introduction to pickleball came about as a way to stay active during the rainy summer months when outdoor sports become difficult.

The PCYC offered pickleball and Matthew was instantly hooked. He has now been playing for

two and a half years and serves on the committee of the Hervey Bay Pickleball Club.

The sport has taken off both locally and globally, with the club boasting around 150 members and 15 dedicated courts behind the Hervey Bay PCYC.

Last year, the club received a grant from the Fraser Coast Regional Council, helping to further develop the sport in the region.

Matthew shares his excitement, saying, “I’d love to see the game and its community continue to grow, with more people getting involved. It’s such a fantastic experience and so much fun for everyone!”

Away from the court, Matthew and his wife, Bec, have been together since meeting at Hervey Bay High School.

Married for six years, they share their home with two gorgeous

dogs, one of whom is a 17-year-old Moodle.

Before COVID, the couple were avid travellers, visiting 50 countries across Europe and Asia. Matthew particularly enjoys destinations like Hong Kong and Singapore, which blend Western conveniences with a relaxed, old-school charm.

As Hervey Bay continues to grow, Matthew appreciates the opportunities and challenges of a busier town.

Looking ahead, Matthew is excited about upcoming tennis and pickleball tournaments that will feed his competitive spirit, along with the possibility of a few well-earned holidays.

With his business thriving, his sports passions keeping him active, and his love for travel still burning, Matthew is making the most of every opportunity that comes his way.
