IN AN AGE where technology has revolutionised every aspect of our daily lives, one tradition that seems to be slipping away is the family dinner table.
A cornerstone of family life for generations, it once served as a gathering place for not only a home-cooked meal but also connection, conversation, and shared experiences. Last week, my teenage daughters mentioned that many of their friends’ families rarely have a sit-down dinner together. It made me pause and reflect: Is the family dinner table still vital to our relationships, or has it become an antiquated relic in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven
everyone in different directions. The family dinner table, once a daily occurrence, now feels like a nostalgic remnant of simpler times. Is this decline simply a product of modern life, or does it signify something deeper?
simultaneously undermines our ability to engage with the people right in front of us?
I believe it remains essential, but I wonder how attainable it is. Growing up, dinner was sacred in our household. It was the one moment in the day when we came together, discussing everything from school assignments to world events. There were no distractions, no devices— just real, unfiltered conversation. These dinners nurtured family bonds, deepened our understanding of one another, and reinforced our sense of belonging. It wasn’t just about eating; it was about being present in each other’s
In the past, families routinely gathered around the dinner table, a ritual that was as much about communication as it was about sustenance. Today, however, families seem increasingly dispersed. Parents work late, children attend extracurricular activities, and technology pulls
The rapid pace of today’s world, especially the pressures of dual-income households and irregular work schedules, makes maintaining traditional practices like nightly dinners increasingly difficult. Parents working longer hours find it hard to carve out family time, and even when they do, rushed meals often lead to less meaningful interactions. It’s not just about time but also attention.
Technology has profoundly changed how families interact. Mobile phones, social media, and streaming services create constant distractions, making true connection more challenging. At the dinner table, phones can serve as barriers to communication. In our house, we enforce a no-phone rule to encourage conversation and foster human-to-human connection. But I sometimes wonder if this expectation is unrealistic in a world where digital connectivity is the norm.
Interestingly, this challenge isn’t entirely new. Decades ago, families would sit together around the television, engrossed in evening broadcasts. When television became a household staple in the 1950s, it shifted the focus from conversation to passive consumption. Are we now in a similar situation with our smartphones, where technology, while connecting us to the world,
The decline of family dinners raises a critical question: How does this impact our relationships? Beyond the act of sharing a meal, the dinner table was a space where emotions were unpacked, struggles were discussed, and guidance was given. These moments helped shape emotional development, teaching children empathy, active listening, and respect for different viewpoints. More importantly, they reinforced the idea that, no matter how hectic life became, family remained a constant source of support.
How has the role of the family dinner table evolved in your own life? Is it still part of your daily routine, or has it faded into the background? If it has disappeared, how has it affected your relationships? Has the absence of this tradition weakened the bonds within families, or have other forms of connection replaced it?
As we look ahead, we must ask ourselves how we might reclaim the dinner table as a space for genuine communication, in whatever form that may take. Perhaps it no longer looks like a nightly sit-down meal but instead becomes a concerted effort to carve out family time in new ways. In an age of constant distraction, should we fight a little harder to preserve the traditions that truly keep us grounded in one another’s lives?

What about another pool.
An indoor heated pool would be great. Maybe more people would exercise. Swimming is gentle on the body and I know many people would use it.
The gym, pickle ball, walking, bike riding etc is not for everyone. This needs serious consideration.
Beverley - An indoor heated pool would definitely be a fantastic addition for those who prefer swimming as a low-impact exercise. It’s important to have a variety of options to cater to different fitness needs, and I’m sure many people would appreciate that. Would you support the idea of adding a pool to the sports complex?
Keep the Torquay caravan park. Council only recently spent a load of money on Torquay with new Managers residence and office. Lachlan Cosgrove you have been elected by the people so you need to listen to what the people want, not what you want. The parks make money for the town so leave them alone.
We need to keep both
What a great idea. Really what the Bay needs. Now basketball, volleyball and other sports can be played in the bay. Having it indoors and in one place is awesome. Think of all the possibilities it would bring. May keep the adolescents busy.
More spending = higher rates = higher rents = higher wages for council staff and city councillors.
At the rate the sports precinct is being developed though, it would be ambitious to expect a venue such as this to be completed by 2032. BTW, how many state league soccer matches have been held at the sports precinct? I seem to recall that being part of the original plan.
caravan parks. The Torquay Park is a lifeline to all the small business owners in that area. They are local rate payers who will struggle to survive without the foot traffic the caravan park provides - leave it alone.
Sorry but I believe there are already enough community parks for recreation along our beautiful Esplanade. We need our caravan parks.
Response to Wayne: It’s a state funded grant.
I think the Fraser Coast would benefit from a large open stadium to host all sorts of large sporting events and concerts at the sports precinct.
It’s important to be careful with how money is spent. However, the goal with this stadium is to bring more events and opportunities to the region, which could help fill the venue and boost the local economy. It’s not just about building a stadium; it’s about creating something that will bring long-term benefits for the community. Do you believe the stadium could provide long-term benefits for the community?
Why waste money exploring options? It’s a no brainer if you want to keep tourists coming keep the parks which generate money. Open spaces don’t.
LEAVE OUR VAN PARKS ALONE.
Leave them as they are! Greed and selfishness have already destroyed far too much.

Fraser Coast Regional Council has launched a new Salvinia Weevil Breeding Facility in Oakhurst to combat the fast-spreading aquatic weed, Salvinia
molesta. Funded by the Queensland Government’s Feral Pest Initiative, the $37,500 facility breeds tiny weevils that feed on the weed, reducing its impact without chemicals.
Senior Biosecurity Supervisor Andrew Hatch said the weevils have already been released at several sites, showing promising results.
Councillor Michelle Byrne highlighted the facility’s eco-friendly benefits and Council’s use of drones to improve weed control. The initiative aims to protect waterways, support landowners, and reduce management costs. More details on Council’s Biosecurity Plan are available at: frasercoast.qld.gov.au.

FRASER Coast Regional Council has endorsed key design principles and priority projects to enhance the Hervey Bay Esplanade, ensuring improvements focus on accessibility, safety and preserving the natural character of the coastline.
At its meeting, Council noted the Hervey Bay Esplanade Preliminary Concept and Point Vernon Preliminary Concept as guiding documents and approved an initial list of priority projects for future budget consideration.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said years of community input helped shape the design principles and priorities to align with local needs.
“The Esplanade is one of the most loved and recognised features of the Fraser Coast. It defines our region’s identity and reputation as a great place to live, work and visit,” he said.
“These guiding principles and priority projects provide a practical, staged approach to making the Esplanade safer, more accessible and more enjoyable while protecting its natural beauty.
“Council is committed to strategic growth and liveability, ensuring the Fraser Coast
remains a region where older residents can age comfortably, and younger generations see a bright future to live, work and raise families.”
• Widening shared pathways from Point Vernon to Urangan to ease congestion and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and people using wheelchairs and mobility aids;
• Upgrading pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures to slow vehicle speeds and improve safety;
• Developing parking solutions in high-use areas such as Pialba and Urangan to improve accessibility and reduce congestion;
• Improving pathway lighting and wayfinding signage while being sensitive to wildlife and the coastal environment.
Cr O’Keefe said the upgrades will enhance the Esplanade without changing its character.
“We want to improve the Esplanade without losing the charm that makes it so special,” he said. “By starting with priority upgrades as funding becomes available, we can begin making real progress while continuing to explore future opportunities.”

Hervey Bay Regional Gallery Director Sarah Thomson said the competition provides an exciting opportunity for contemporary artists to present their work on a national stage and compete for a significant cash prize.

Girra was borne out of the enduring social and cultural importance of the natural environment in the Fraser Coast region, encompassing land, sea and sky, said Ms Thomson.

THE FRASER Coast community turned out in force for the annual “Hoist Ya Boss” fundraiser, an event that brought business leaders, residents, and supporters together for a great cause.
Organised by the Fraser Coast Hospice Association Inc., the morning event at Scarness Park aimed to raise $60,000 to support the hospice’s vital, fee-free palliative care services.
The event’s unique concept saw local business leaders “hoisted” into the air using cherry pickers and scissor lifts, where they remained suspended until they each raised at least $3,000 in donations.
The lively and engaging initiative drew plenty of attention and support from the local community, making for a morning filled with excitement and generosity.
Among those who took to the skies were Michael Beck from The Beach House Hotel, Jasine Leslie representing Fraser Coast Hospice, and Jayden Christie from Aquavue Beachfront Café.
Their willingness to be lifted high above the park highlighted their commitment to the cause and set the stage for a fun and successful event.
Local businesses and organisations played a crucial role in making the fundraiser possible. Handy Hire Beach provided the necessary equipment, while The Beach House Hotel supported event logistics. Media partner 103.5 Triple M Fraser Coast helped spread the word, ensuring strong community participation.
Attendees enjoyed breakfast and refreshments while cheering on the suspended bosses. The sight of wellknown local figures dangling above the park created a vibrant atmosphere, reinforcing the strong sense of unity within the Fraser Coast community.
Families, friends, and even passing visitors stopped by to witness the spectacle, many of whom were inspired to contribute on the spot.
By the end of the event, a remarkable $28,541 had been raised, with donations still coming in.
As contributions continued to flow in afterward, the final total reached an impressive $45,167.
These funds are vital for Fraser Coast Hospice, which depends on community-driven initiatives like “Hoist Ya Boss” to generate one-third of its
$2.17 million annual operating budget.
Adding to the excitement was the competitive aspect of the event. The highest fundraiser was awarded the honour of hosting “Hoist Ya Boss 2026” at their business.
This year’s top fundraiser was Mark D’Emilio from Hervey Bay Hotel, who raised an incredible $25,552 for Fraser Coast Hospice Association Inc. The trophy was officially handed over by the 2024 winners, Beach House Hotel Hervey Bay, during a celebratory announcement at the venue.
The Fraser Coast Hospice Association expressed its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated, donated, and supported the event. Their contributions ensure that the hospice can continue to provide compassionate and dignified end-of-life care to those in need.
With the overwhelming success of “Hoist Ya Boss 2025,” the community is already looking forward to another exciting edition next year, hoping to reach even greater fundraising milestones and continue this meaningful tradition.
TO QUOTE Thin Lizzy,
“The Boys Are Back in Town” at Z-PAC Theatre as Inspector Drake and his hapless sidekick Sergeant Plod investigate what could just be the Perfekt Crime – running from May 16 to June 1, 2025.
After the huge success of Inspector Drake and the Black Widow in 2024, David Coleman reprises his role as the determined, but challenged, Inspector Drake. “It’s great to reunite with the team,” he says, “although the plot, rather like a certain police sergeant I know, keeps getting thicker!”
Written by English comic playwright David Tristram, this hilarious whodunit promises plenty of laughs, plot twists, and a pair of policemen who are definitely not the next Holmes and Watson.
Also returning is Shane “Scooter” King as Sergeant Plod. “It’s like putting on an old shirt—comfortable and fun,” King says of stepping back into the role. The dynamic between Drake and Plod is at the heart of the show, delivering comedic gold as they attempt to solve a mystery riddled with absurdity.
The cast also includes Leigh McGee who plays “just” Sabrina (she had eight roles in last year’s smash
hit) and she enjoys the witty exchanges between Drake and Plod; Paul Burrell as Dr Short, who describes the play as wild but tame compared to his childhood antics; and Janette Barnes as Miss Short, who embraces a surprising transformation into the “epitome of Tina Turner.”
Bringing it all together is director Judith La Forest, whose varied background— from forensic lab work to legal conveyancing—has led her back to her true passion: theatre. “Life now finds me happily involved with Z-PAC,” she says.
Audiences can expect a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud mystery filled with outrageous
characters and unexpected turns. From a wolf-married doctor to a missing taxi driver and even the Pope in the woods, no question is too ridiculous for Inspector Drake to investigate!
With Friday and Saturday evening shows plus Sunday matinees, don’t miss this laugh-filled theatrical ride. Inspector Drake and the Perfekt Crime runs from May 16 to June 1with ticket prices ranging from $16.50 to $27.50. THE BURRUM Districts
Respite Association Inc. has recently received significant funding from the Fraser Coast Regional Council Community Grants Program and the Hervey Bay RSL Grants Program to support the completion of a vital new project.
The generous funding enabled the purchase of a new pergola kit and the construction of the pergola by a local builder, significantly enhancing the facilities available to the association’s clients and the wider community.
In the latest round of grants, the Burrum Districts Respite Association Inc. was able to provide its clients and community members with a shaded, covered outdoor area, designed to offer a place where individuals can connect with nature and enjoy the gardens in comfort.
The new pergola also creates an ideal space for a variety of community events, celebrations, and respite activities throughout the year, encouraging people to spend more time outdoors and fostering a greater sense of community.
“This funding allowed for our new pergola kit to be purchased and for the structure to be built by a local builder,” said Wade Price of the Burrum Districts Respite Association Inc.
“The new pergola will provide essential shade and a welcoming outdoor space for people to enjoy and feel more connected to our gardens. It has truly made a difference in the way we serve our community.”
The funding received from both the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Hervey Bay RSL has been instrumental in helping local Not-For-Profit groups carry out important community projects.
The ongoing support from these organisations is widely praised by those in the sector, enabling them to create lasting, positive impacts in the Fraser Coast area.
“The Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Hervey Bay RSL should be commended for their continued support shown to Not-For-Profit community groups in the Fraser Coast,” Price added.
Thanks to the funding, the Burrum Districts Respite Association Inc. is now better equipped to support its clients, provide a vital space for relaxation, and host a range of important community activities, enriching the lives of all involved.

FRASER Coast aged-care residents have been enjoying live music performances from the comfort of their homes thanks to a new initiative from the Brolga Theatre.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the popular Morning Melodies program hit the road this year, taking live performances to seven agedcare facilities.
“Many of our senior residents can no longer visit the theatre in person, so we wanted to take the joy of live music to them,” he said.
“By delivering these performances to aged-care facilities, we’re fostering social connection, well-being, and the magic of live entertainment
for those who might otherwise miss out.”
The final concert was held at Blue Care Masters Lodge Retirement Living in Urraween said Cr Seymour, with residents enthusiastically joining in with singing, clapping, and even dancing.
Cr Seymour said research has shown that music, singing, and movement can have profound benefits for older adults, particularly those in aged care which was evident in the way residents responded to the performances.
“Music has the power to spark joy, bring back fond memories, and create a real sense of connection,” he said.
“Each one-hour musical
event featured Brolga performers and local musicians, creating an interactive and engaging experience that helped combat isolation and promote emotional well-being.
“With fewer transport options available to bring aged-care residents to the theatre since COVID-19, the decision to take Morning Melodies to them proved to be a resounding success.
“Given the overwhelmingly positive feedback, plans are now underway to extend the program later this year, ensuring even more seniors can experience the joy and benefits of live music.”

Where Our Past Meets Our Future
Once, it was the heart of a small seaside town. Locals knew it as the One Stop Mart, Twistes Nightclub, the Sportes Club. It was where birthdays were celebrated, groceries bought, and laughter echoed through every corner. For nearly 50 years, this building on 8 Pier Street, Urangan stood as a gathering place - a living memory of Hervey Bay’s journey from a quiet fshing village to the vibrant coastal community we love today. And then, like many great things, it faded. The lights dimmed. The doors closed. But the story wasn’t over.

AS MIDDLE-aged women, we often take pride in our health—eating well, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and soaking up the sun.
Yet, when perimenopause hits, all those diligent efforts can feel overshadowed by an unpredictable whirlwind of hormonal changes. The oncefamiliar rhythms of our bodies become elusive, leaving many of us grappling with mood swings, irritability, and even periods of deep loneliness.
Perimenopause, marked by a significant decrease in estrogen and progesterone, is a natural phase of life, yet it can evoke feelings of fear and uncertainty.
For some, this journey may include troubling thoughts and suicidal ideation, aspects that society has historically brushed under the rug.
Thankfully, this topic is gaining more attention on social media, fostering a sense of community and support among those navigating similar experiences.
Seeking medical help is crucial during this transitional time. It’s important to consult healthcare professionals who understand the complexities of perimenopause. Blood tests can assess hormone levels, providing insight into your unique hormonal landscape.
Working with a knowledgeable practitioner, whether they are a general
practitioner, gynecologist, or a naturopath, can illuminate options tailored to your needs.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has historically been linked with fears of breast cancer, but current research is reshaping this narrative. Many studies suggest that HRT can significantly benefit both body and mind when appropriately managed and monitored.
It’s crucial, however, not to settle for antidepressants as the only solution.
Instead, track your cycle and understand the fluctuations in your mood and stress levels; this awareness can empower your conversations with health professionals.
Keep searching until you find a provider who listens and genuinely understands this phase of life. Experts like Dr Mary Claire and Dr Andrew Orr are committed to educating women and supporting them through perimenopause, offering guidance on holistic
approaches to hormonal health.
Additionally, nutrition plays an integral role in managing this transition. Increasing your protein intake is essential, as protein supports overall hormonal function and helps maintain energy levels. So how can we not just survive, but thrive during this tumultuous time? First and foremost, it’s essential to acknowledge your feelings. Sharing your struggles with trusted friends or joining support groups can provide a sense of connection in what sometimes feels like an isolating experience.
Regular exercise, especially strength training and yoga, can significantly enhance mood and alleviate symptoms. Mindfulness and meditation practices provide tools to manage stress and promote emotional well-being.
By fostering open conversations, supporting one another, and advocating for better understanding, we can navigate the complexities of perimenopause together.
Life may change, but so can our perspectives—let’s make this a time of empowerment and growth.

NEW and upgraded bus shelters in Hervey Bay, Toogoom and Gundiah are
set to deliver safer, more comfortable, and sun-smart waiting spaces for both students and passengers across the Fraser Coast. The infrastructure improvements aim to enhance the usability and accessibility of public transport in regional communities while offering relief from Queensland’s often harsh weather conditions.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Roads and Transport spokesperson Denis Chapman said the works would include the construction of two brand new bus shelters outside Yarrilee State School on Scrub Hill Road, one new shelter on Kingfisher Parade in Toogoom, and a significantly upgraded bus stop facility on Netherby Road in Gundiah.
“These bus shelters are vital pieces of infrastructure that provide real benefits to the community,” Cr Chapman said.
“Whether it’s school children waiting for their morning bus or residents travelling to appointments, having a safe, shaded, and accessible place to wait makes a big difference—especially during hot or wet weather.”
In recent years, the Fraser Coast has experienced rising demand for improved public transport amenities, especially in growing suburbs and rural areas. These upgrades respond directly to community feedback calling for safer, more inclusive waiting areas—particularly near schools and high-traffic routes.
Cr Chapman said construction was already progressing, with the concrete slab poured at Netherby Road, where the upgraded facility will be delivered during the school holidays.
“The Yarrilee State School bus shelters are also planned for completion during the school break, with works in Toogoom set to follow shortly after.”
The new and upgraded shelters will feature modern shade structures and seating designed for durability and comfort, accommodating a range of users including students, seniors, and those with mobility aids. Additional improvements will include better footpath access and clearer signage to assist in navigation and timetable visibility.
Minister for Local Government Ann Leahy praised the project, highlighting the State Government’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure in regional areas through targeted grant programs.
“Our government is working to make regional communities more desirable places to live, work and relax, because thriving regional communities are critical for the future of our great State,” Minister Leahy said.
“Projects like this will not only help improve liveability and accessibility for local communities, while supporting jobs in rural and regional council areas.”
Cr Chapman said the $125,000 Hervey Bay and Toogoom project is being delivered by Council and is partially funded through the Queensland Government’s Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure and Works for Queensland funding programs. The Gundiah bus stop upgrade is also being partly funded through the Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure Programme, while the Morris Road shelter at Toogoom is supported by the 2024–2027 Works for Queensland Programme.
“Upgrading bus stops across regional Queensland means better access to transport and more inclusive, connected
communities,” Cr Chapman said.
Construction at Netherby Road is expected to be completed next month, while the Yarrilee School and Kingfisher Parade shelters are on track for delivery by June 2025, weather permitting.
Traffic management measures will be in place throughout the works to protect both the construction teams and the general public.
“We thank residents and road users for their patience and understanding while these essential upgrades take place,” Cr Chapman said.
“The end result will be safer, more accessible public transport infrastructure that benefits our whole community.”

Aura Dental was founded in 2009 by Dr Elizabeth Rowland with the philosophy to provide quality, professional dental care while empowering and educating patients to enable them to make informed decisions about their oral health care and the choices of treatment options suitable for them, ensuring there are no surprises!
Integral to our philosophy is treating patients honestly with respect and empathy in a wholistic way.
DR ARUSHI JOSHI
The well-established team of Dr Andrew Macaulay, Dr Simon Shannon and Dr Emily Harris has grown over the last two years to include both Dr Moon Allen who joined us in 2023 and Dr Ash Joshi who is our newest team member. The whole Dental team have shared passions for quality, realistic dental treatments and for engaging with their patients to help them to make informed choices as to the best dental treatments for them.
Meet our latest recruits
Ash moved to Australia as a child and grew up in North Queensland for most of her life. Being a recent graduate from JCU in Cairns, she wanted a new adventure down south in Hervey Bay.
Having completed her final year in Mackay, and Townsville, her hometown, she enjoys all aspects of general dentistry.
She is very passionate about accessible dental care and has volunteered in Indigenous communities and rural Nepal.
Being someone who never enjoyed seeing the dentist themselves, she understands the anxieties involved with dental visits.
Her goal is to help her patients become confident in visiting the dentist to maintain their oral health and smiles.
In her spare time, you can find her either reading, painting or chasing the next waterfall.
DR MOON ALLEN
Moon has been serving the Hervey Bay community since 2020 and joined the Aura team in 2023. She is a graduate of Adelaide University and has lived in Singapore and China prior to calling Australia home. In addition to English, she is also fluent in Mandarin. She married her husband, David, in 2022.
She is a dentist who enjoys building relationships with patients and believes in a patient centred approach and is an enthusiastic advocate of wholistic dentistry where the focus is not only on the teeth but more importantly the whole person. She is especially interested in paediatric dentistry, oral surgery and cosmetic dentistry. In her free time, she enjoys cross stitch or a game of Sudoku when she isn't busy enjoying the coastal lifestyle.
WITH INCREASED CAPACITY, NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT
We have more appointments available for both new patients and for urgent treatments. So, if you’re new to the Bay, overdue for a check up or have a dental issue niggling away, now is a great time to give the friendly team a call.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY 8AM 5PM
WITH ANZAC Day approaching, I sat down with Brian Tidyman, President of the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch and a proud Vietnam War Veteran. Our interview fell on his seventy-eighth birthday, a fitting time to reflect on his service.
The people he met and the experiences he endured shaped his life forever. Sharing these stories ensures future generations remember those who served.
Brian began in the Citizen Military Force before enlisting in the regular Army in 1964.
Boot Camp was unforgettable. Recruits were confined to camp for six weeks, working from dawn to dusk. During Wagga Wagga’s scorching summer, they spent three weeks battling grass fires with Hessian bags—an unexpected addition to their training.
Brian later trained at the School
of Artillery in North Head, Sydney, earning the title of Gunner. By the time he was deployed to Vietnam, he was just twenty-one.
Brian recalls the old Australian ration packs as the worst—Bully Beef, rock-hard biscuits, and canned margarine that exploded in a greasy stream in Vietnam’s heat. Some rations were still stamped from WWII.
Soldiers carried up to 80 pounds, including the 28-pound SLR rifle, which never left their side—not even for the toilet.
While many stories can’t be printed, Brian shares one that still makes him laugh.
“In Vietnam, we had drop toilets and plenty of blowflies. To kill germs, we’d toss in smoke grenades—until someone threw in a real one. The explosion sent ‘you-know-what’ flying over the officer’s mess. We
gunners found it hilarious! I always suspected my mate, Leo Muir—a full-blooded Aboriginal man, but he never owned up.”
Brian recalls another moment with Leo. While on leave, Leo, who called Brian “Whitey,” suggested a bar. Inside, the place was pitch black. Jokingly, Brian said, “Right-Ho, Darkie, what are you drinking?”
Before he knew it, a massive hand grabbed him by the neck and pinned him to the wall. It took Leo half an hour to convince everyone that it was just their way of bantering, not racism. It was tense at the time, but the pair laughed about it for years afterwards.
Sadly, Leo passed away in his early 40s from a heart attack. Brian had the honour of carrying his casket, remembering him as a true gentleman. Brian vividly recalls leaving
Vietnam. After a fire mission, they flew to Saigon, then landed in Sydney at 1 a.m.
There was no debrief— just a quick pass through customs. The Army handed them their final leave money, told them to get out of uniform, and sent them on their way. They had no time to process what they’d been through.
Brian recalls his first thunderstorm after returning home: “I must have been dreaming when the thunder hit and thought mortars were incoming. Instinct kicked in, and I tried to shove my wife under the bed, probably why she divorced me. I still have nightmares, though less often.”
He never regretted his time in Vietnam, as it helped shape who he is. What he regrets is how returning soldiers were treated, often targeted by protests fuelled by the media’s coverage of the war.
Though distance keeps them
he’s hoping to head to Melbourne later this year for another reunion— an afternoon of laughter, shared memories, and honouring those they’ve lost. Sadly, more than half are gone.
After the military, Brian continued serving others, joining the fire service and eventually becoming an officer. Brian left for Vietnam as a young married man and returned forever changed. The weight of his experiences was something he could only share with fellow veterans— civilians simply couldn’t understand. Reflecting on the challenges faced by those who serve, he firmly believes that more needs to be done to support veterans transitioning from the defence force. “There are still too many suicides,” he said sadly.
Some of Brian’s closest mates are those he served with in Vietnam,

Here you have a sublime place where you will find difficult to resist soaking up the cool coastal breezes and sounds of the rolling waves of the ocean, while you admire the serene tropical garden. Both homes were created to capture the beautiful lush landscapes while you sit in your favourite cosy lounge chair. Once energised take a stroll to the beach or local Arkarra gardens café. Your choice, once you make it your own of course.
