Lakehouse

The future Lakehouse, set to be completed by the end of this year, will soon become the heart of Lakeview Springs.

Designed to inspire a life in balance, it will feature facilities such as indoor and outdoor pools, a gym, exercise room, virtual golf, games room, wine bar, kitchen, dining area, library, cinema-theatre, and an arts and craf studio. Sporting options include lawn bowls, tennis, pickleball courts and more.

The Lakehouse will ofer something for everyone, providing a welcoming space for the community to connect and thrive. It will be nestled beside a serene 12-acre lake, surrounded by manicured gardens, and a 1.2km walking trail, for the exclusive recreation and relaxation of Lakeview Springs residents.

AS the publisher of the Hervey Bay Advertiser and the Hervey Bay Independent, I have had the privilege of being a part of this vibrant community since 2009.

Over these years, our newspapers have become a cornerstone for sharing local news, fostering community spirit, and promoting the businesses that are the lifeblood of Hervey Bay. Today, I’m writing with a deep sense of gratitude, as well as a recognition of the responsibility we carry as a business within this community.

The devastating flooding that impacted our city in March has left its mark on so many local businesses, large and small.

It has been difficult to witness the emotional and financial toll it has taken, particularly on shop owners who have faced the dual challenge of repairing damage to their premises while trying to recover lost income. For those businesses who rely on foot traffic, the impact was not just a temporary closure, it was a significant disruption that will take months, and in some cases even years, to fully recover from.

In my role as the Publisher, I take my responsibility to this community very seriously.

Over the years, we have worked tirelessly to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for community, charity, not-for-profit, and sporting organisations, because we believe in the power of a unified community.

We know that local businesses are the backbone of Hervey Bay, and they are the reason our community thrives.

Our newspaper business has always operated with one fundamental principle in mind: we derive our income solely from the support of local businesses. Without the support of advertisers, we cannot continue to serve our community in the way we do.

We are deeply grateful for the resilience of our local businesses, and we have been encouraged to see many of them return to business in some capacity. While it’s heartening to witness this recovery, we must also acknowledge the reality that for some, the road ahead is long and difficult.

Recovery does not simply mean reopening doors, it means making up for lost revenue, covering operational costs, and managing

additional burdens like staff wages. For some businesses, the financial gap created by the floodwaters is a challenging one.

We hope this advertising fund will help to generate additional exposure and drive new business for those who need it the most. Our aim is to provide a platform for businesses to reconnect with their customers, and, importantly, start making up for the losses they have incurred over the past weeks.

It’s important to note that no business should ever feel embarrassed to lean on us during times like these. If you are not a client of the Hervey Bay Advertiser, it doesn’t matter. Our assistance does not come with a caveat.

Many people in our community who work from home or rely on indirect trade have also been affected, even if the loss of revenue isn’t easily quantifiable. For those people, their livelihoods were impacted just as deeply, and their recovery may take the form of trying to rebuild customer relationships or compensate for a loss of trade that has no clear measure. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the support and resilience of our entire community. We are all in this together. It is a privilege to offer this advertising pool, and we are committed to continuing to support our local businesses in whatever way we can.

Ultra Tune Hervey Bay

Following up, and in support of letter from Graham. R, Urangan 6/3/25.

We are annual visitors to Torquay Caravan Park.

It’s our favourite park after trying the others over many years.

We bring our caravan for 2-4 weeks annually, and sometimes more than once a year.

We were horrified to hear of the Council’s proposal to demolish the Park for another green space!

Hervey Bay has the best Esplanade in Australia, at least 14 kms of green space with seating, picnic areas, bike and walking trails, exercise areas, water park, oval etc.

And that’s not including Gatakers Bay where there’s more of the same green space and bushland.

We’ve heard a “RUMOUR” that a Developer wants to build a high rise across from the park but WON’T build with a caravan park in front of it!!

We’ve also heard the “RUMOUR” that the Council can get as much money in rates from the development as it could from the park.

There are so many vacant blocks and derelict buildings along the Esplanade without a caravan park in front of them that could be developed, so why destroy an iconic part of the Bay’s history. Sounds more like “GREED” than progress to us!

Cr Zane O’Keefe, Hervey Bay Advertiser, March 6,2025, p13 stated:

“This is about making sure these sites provide the best value and experience for our community and visitors now and into the future”

We feel this proposal is not in the best interests of the community and visitors.

Hervey Bay and the uniqueness of its caravan parks on the Esplanade have been attracting families for over 45 years.

They are iconic, giving the ordinary “Aussie” a wonderful holiday in a natural paradise.

We live in Ballina but do not visit the Gold Coast because of the unprecedented development of high rises and should this happen to the stunning natural Esplanade of Hervey Bay it would be a tragedy. We would certainly look for an alternative place to spend our money if this proposal ensues.

Dear Editor,

As a long time resident of Hervey Bay, I am concerned about the potential closure of Torquay Caravan Park.

This park is more than just a spot for travellers.

The caravan park has always been a welcoming space for families and visitors from all over.

It’s a great accommodation option that allows people to experience Hervey Bay in a unique way.

The proposed closure of Torquay Caravan Park would not only diminish the charm of our community, but it would also take away our local tourism.

Many of us rely on the park to bring in visitors who support our small businesses and contribute to Hervey Bay. Losing it would be a blow.

I urge all those involved to reconsider the future of the park.

This park is part of what makes Hervey Bay so special, and we can’t afford to let it slip away.

With empathy in mind, the issues we are currently experiencing require enforcement to protect the public and its community property.

It may not sound like a popular solution, but without the effort by council, law enforcement and government to step in to address and assist those that are using our public spaces in a manner for which they were not designed, the tax payer will see these conditions worsen.

“Housing” in our public space is not a solution; it is an outcome of a lack of enforcement and assistance. This issue must be pushed uphill to be addressed with urgency by our elected officials, not onto the tax paying public.

Landlords are in business, not culprits, and a family wishing to use a barbeque in our parks should not have to compete with those that have elected to set up camp in these areas.

The roll-on effect of enabling our parks, barbeque areas and toilets to be used as a place to set up an encampment, invites the associated issues we are increasingly experiencing in our town.

individuals from our public spaces, the outcomes are increased costs to the tax payer for maintenance, or dereliction and a decline in local taxpayer quality of standard of living.

The way we’ve seen this issue handled as a solution in other towns and places, are parks are closed at dusk or 10pm.

No overnight parking in areas prone to this type of abuse, implementing no camping area enforcement, and if I may go so far to suggest that minor children, who should under the care and responsibility of their parents, be subject to a 10pm curfew.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council own 4 caravan parks in Burrum Heads, Torquay, Scarness and Pialba.

The council could consider quarantining a section in one or two of all four caravan parks as a shortterm, (10 weeks) camping accommodation at no fee for verified homeless people living rough in our communitynot backpackers and tourist campers.

community services work with people to assist with accommodation beyond the short-term stay.

The above is a simplistic approach to a very complex social issue and will require hard decisions and a coordinated effort with local services and work to implement.

However, this problem requires an innovative, compassionate and bold measure by council to address this issue in our community.

The council may need to put community before profit.

Thank you for providing an informed view of what is a critical issue with complexities that result in significant impacts for the whole community. The FCRC response is appalling, lacking in responsibility and understanding. There are no easy solutions but creating more issues for those experiencing homelessness, an ever-growing problem, does not help.

Without monitoring and appropriate action taken to prevent and remove these

This proposal would provide a central safe place to sleep and reside, access to cooking, toilet/shower and laundry facilities guided by park rules and managed by on site staff.

During the 10 weeks,

Well said and the other thing people need to remember is “Every” rental property short or long term, is part of someone’s superannuation or business, not a Charity. So, bagging out the landlords is not the answer to this crisis.

which outlines future roads, parks, water, sewer, and community facilities for the next 15 years.

With an exciting lineup of events, including a Ninja Warrior challenge, skateboarding workshops, an NFL Come & Try Day, and a high-energy disco, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour emphasised the importance of Youth Week in keeping young people engaged and active during the school holidays.

“Youth Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate 12- to 25-year-olds and the significant role they play in our community,” Mayor Seymour said.

“This year, with five exciting new events, we’re aiming to make it bigger and better than ever.”

Among the fresh additions to the program is the #CommunityGroove Disco, kicking off the celebrations on Saturday, 5 April, at the Hervey Bay PCYC.

Skate enthusiasts can refine their skills at the Hilltop Skateboarding Workshops, running from 7 to 13 April at various locations, while

aspiring ninjas can test their agility at the Ninja Warrior event on Tuesday, 8 April, at Wodfit Gym in Hervey Bay.

For sports fans, the NFL Flag Come & Try Day on Thursday, 10 April, at Seafront Oval offers a chance to experience the fast-paced, non-contact version of American football.

Fishing enthusiasts won’t be left out either, with the Hervey Bay Fishing Competition & BBQ set for 14 April at Lower Dayman Park.

Beyond these new highlights, the week also features digital art workshops, a spine-tingling ghost hunt at the historic Bond Store in Maryborough, and the highly anticipated Youth Fest—a vibrant celebration

packed with food stalls, a colour run, and volleyball competitions.

Mayor Seymour stressed the significance of Youth Week in giving young people a platform to express themselves, develop new skills, and foster connections with their peers.

“Youth Week provides a space for young people to share their thoughts on the community, voice their aspirations, and contribute to shaping the Fraser Coast into a place where they want to live, work, and play,” he said.

CONSTRUCTION has commenced on a new footpath along Nissen Street in Hervey Bay, aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility between two of the city’s busiest roads— Boat Harbour Drive and Old Maryborough Road.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Lachlan Cosgrove said the 2.5-metre-wide footpath would fill a critical gap in the local pedestrian network, making travel safer and more convenient for residents, workers, and shoppers in the area.

“This project will make it easier and safer for people to walk through the area, especially with the number of businesses along Nissen Street,” Cr Cosgrove said. “It builds on the safety improvements introduced last year with the installation of traffic lights at the Nissen Street and Islander Road intersection.”

The scope of the project includes:

• A 2.5-metre-wide footpath extending approximately 340 metres on the eastern side of Nissen Street;

• A 3-metre-wide footpath for 37 metres between Boat Harbour Drive and the Fraser Shores Shopping

Centre access road;

• Concrete islands to create a pedestrian refuge crossing on Old Maryborough Road;

• Additional infrastructure, including new concrete driveways, kerb ramps, signage, line-marking, and landscaping.

To ensure safety, a traffic and pedestrian management plan will be in place throughout the construction period. Work is expected to be completed by mid-June, weather permitting. Pedestrians and motorists are urged to follow all traffic control measures in place and allow for potential delays in the area. Businesses along Nissen Street will remain open during the works, with access maintained for customers and deliveries.

Cr Cosgrove emphasised

the Council’s commitment to enhancing connectivity across Hervey Bay, making it safer and more accessible for people to walk or cycle to work, shops, and services. He also encouraged residents to utilise the new pathway once completed and provide feedback on its benefits.

“It’s all part of Council’s plan to build better communities together,” he said. “Investing in pedestrian and cycling infrastructure is essential for the liveability and sustainability of our region.”

The $730,000 project is being delivered by Fraser Coast Regional Council with support from the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants programme.

Statement regarding The Hervey Bay Advertiser and the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association

In response to recent discussions and commentary circulating within social media and the community, The Hervey Bay Advertiser wishes to formally clarify that it has made the decision to withdraw its sponsorship agreement with the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association (FCPIA), which includes the discontinuation of the monthly Property Talk column in this publication.

In pursuit of transparency and responsible journalism, the newspaper extended a formal invitation to The Fraser Coast Property Industry Association requesting a one-on-one interview to discuss the role of the organisation in relation to its involvement with the lobbying of the Fraser Coast Regional Council regarding the closure of the Torquay Caravan Park. Three dates and times were offered for this discussion.

The interview request was declined.

The Hervey Bay Advertiser is committed to upholding the highest standards of journalism and consistently distinguishes between personal opinion pieces and objective, balanced news reporting.

The FCPIA’s refusal to engage in a direct conversation on this matter has unfortunately led to increased scrutiny and speculation regarding its stance on the closure of the Torquay Caravan Park, and why it has made this issue one of its primary areas of focus.

It has also drawn the Hervey Bay Advertiser into the debate online, as a partner of the FCPIA.

The Hervey Bay Advertiser has always considered its relationship with the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association, and particularly its members, a privilege. The decision to cease this partnership was not made lightly.

As a respected and trusted local media outlet, The Hervey Bay Advertiser is mindful of the potential implications of maintaining a formal partnership with any organisation, especially where such a relationship could be perceived as an endorsement of that organisation’s position on contentious issues, such as the ongoing debate surrounding the future of the Torquay Caravan Park.

Looking forward, The Hervey Bay Advertiser remains open to future opportunities for coverage of the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association’s activities, including general news related to its agendas, with each request to be evaluated on its individual merits.

This statement is issued to ensure clarity and to address any potential misinterpretations. The Hervey Bay Advertiser continues to prioritise integrity and professionalism in all its editorial and community engagements.

“Participants will learn how to prepare smaller portions, store food safely, and make healthier choices using simple, at-home cooking techniques.

“The workshops, designed for those aged 50 and over, will offer a hands-on, interactive

experience, featuring cooking demonstrations, tastings, trivia, and take-home resources.

“Led by qualified nutritionist Sara Dengate, the sessions will kick off with Let’s Break Bread

– Lunch with a Nutritionist in early April, a relaxed meetand-greet over lunch where participants can discuss their cooking goals for the program.”

Sessions run every Thursday from 1–3 pm for $5 each and include:

• One-Pan Wonders from the Pantry

• Steak Sandwich or Veggie Burgers for one

• Reading Labels and Healthy Snacks

• Cooking in the Air Fryer

• Food Safety and Meal Prep for the Future

Ms De Waard said the program also encourages

community connection, with participants invited to get involved in the community garden at Halcro Street Community Centre, with the potential to establish a dedicated plot for future cooking programs.

“Fraser Coast Regional Council is excited to bring this program to the community, providing residents living alone with valuable skills, confidence in the kitchen, and a chance to connect over a shared love of food,” she said.

The young athlete has earned a coveted spot in the Brisbane Broncos Development Squad for 2025, marking a major milestone in his sporting career.

A student at Bayside Christian College, Braxton’s rugby league journey began at just six years old when he joined the Hervey Bay Seagulls under the guidance of coach Brett Carter.

It was here that Braxton’s passion for the sport ignited, with Carter continuing to mentor him to this day. Chris Nash, another key figure in Braxton’s development, has also played an essential role in helping

him refine his skills.

Braxton’s rugby league career has been nothing short of impressive. In 2023, he was selected for the State Development Squad in OzTag, and in 2024, his talents were recognised further with representative honours for both Hervey Bay and the Wide Bay Bulls.

He was also named the Wide Bay Players’ Player for rugby league, cementing his place as one of the region’s brightest young talents.

Not content to rest on his achievements, Braxton has already secured a place in the 2025 State Development Squad for OzTag.

FOR MANY who have banked with the Community Bank Hervey Bay, part of the Bendigo Bank network, a familiar face has been there since its inception.

19 years ago, Linda Brown heard of a community bank model that captured her interest, so she enquired about how to join.

“The idea that someone could come in to do their banking and contribute to the community… that got my attention”, says Linda.

“So I became a member of their staff and a shareholder!”

The introduction of a community bank to Hervey Bay was an exciting time for her.

“Early years were crazy. We approached many of the not for profit organisations, we got to know the community people and of course everything was by hand. “

The introduction of internet banking has certainly changed their industry, but Linda embraced the technology as she could see the benefits for customers.

“The ability to do banking from home…. Real time banking. I think it is so much easier”, she says.

“But I do miss the cash counting.”

She recalls many highlights during her time including attending state and national conferences with Bendigo Bank.

“Meeting other people, bouncing ideas from other branches, guest speakers and the occasional good night out.” as Linda reminisces.

“My customers are my biggest highlight. I’ve seen the ups and downs... I will miss them dearly. They are the heartbeat of our community bank.”

Her passion for the community bank model is obvious. She recalls parents revisiting the branch many years after their child received support for sport uniforms and how they will never forget that support.

She will be missed by “the tight knit team,” being such a popular member of the staff.

Branch Manager, Tim Evans, says he will always remember her work ethic and motto of “there is one way to do things, that’s the right way.”

“There is nothing she doesn’t

WE’RE OPEN! TO THE PUBLIC

• My Aged Care subsidised meals

• Great choice of frozen meals for everyone

know. There is a warmth about her that everyone feels when you walk into the branch.”

Tim recalls the only concerns were during COVID.

“It was particularly hard to get her to stop hugging people, that was problematic,” says Tim.

“She is the world’s biggest social butterfly and will be missed by the staff and especially our customers.”

And the final word from Linda about her time with Community Bank Hervey Bay?

“Enormously satisfying for myself. A great sense of achievement what I could help the customers with… that’s the big one.”

“It’s easy when it’s from the heart.”

THE GOVERNMENT has marked a significant achievement in enhancing Queensland’s policing efforts, with 155 new officers graduating in the state’s largest police graduation ceremony in 33 years.

This milestone reflects the Government’s commitment to bolstering police numbers and restoring safety across Queensland, including in Hervey Bay, where new officers like Constable Kiara Hill will soon hit the streets to serve the community.

The diverse cohort of graduates includes law students, former business owners, security officers, and even former police officers from countries such as New Zealand, the UK, and South Africa.

Their backgrounds and experiences are as varied as the regions they will serve.

In fact, these new recruits have already been making their mark, having assisted with evacuations and

door-knocked hundreds of residents to help during the recent ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in South East Queensland.

Their proactive approach in such critical situations showcases the readiness and dedication they bring to the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

One standout in the latest batch of graduates is Constable Kiara Hill, who hails from Beaudesert and previously worked as a stable hand. Now, Kiara is excited to start her journey as a frontline officer in Hervey Bay.

"I’ve always wanted to help the community and make it a safer place for people," Constable Hill said.

"The knowledge and skills I’ve gained during my time at the academy have been my highlight, and I’m so excited to be moving to Hervey Bay."

Hervey Bay residents can look forward to having someone passionate about safety and community at the helm.

Constable Hill’s commitment to serving her new community reflects the broader goals of the Crisafulli Government to ensure safer streets through a growing, well-equipped police force.

The addition of 155 new officers is just the beginning, with over 750 recruits currently training at Queensland Police academies and more than 2,100 applicants in the recruiting pipeline. This is part of a larger strategy to enhance police presence across the state, from Brisbane and the Far North to regional areas like Mt Isa, Rockhampton, and of course, Hervey Bay.

Premier David Crisafulli emphasised the Government’s focus

on supporting law enforcement to ensure safety for Queenslanders.

“Our Government promised we would put more officers on the ground, and every day we are making sure that the police frontline is stronger,” Premier Crisafulli said.

He also highlighted the importance of the recent $31.1 million funding boost, which will be directed towards high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots.

The Government’s strategy includes tackling the Youth Crime Crisis by providing officers with the support and resources they need to succeed.

Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy shared his pride in the new officers, noting their rapid integration into Queensland communities.

“This is a milestone achievement for not only the QPS but for each and every one of our graduating officers today," he said.

“Their efforts, especially in the lead-up to Cyclone Alfred, showed exactly the kind of commitment and community spirit that define the Queensland Police Service.”

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie echoed this sentiment, emphasising that the Crisafulli Government is committed to giving police the laws and resources they need to do their jobs effectively.

As Constable Hill and her fellow officers begin their roles across the state, Hervey Bay residents can rest assured knowing that the Crisafulli Government is working to ensure their safety and security with a stronger, better-supported police force.

With fresh faces like Constable Hill joining the team, Hervey Bay is ready for the next chapter in building a safer community for all.

FLOODING on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, particularly in Hervey Bay on Sunday March 9th, 2025, has demonstrated camaraderie and resilience of our community. Whilst the immediate and visible dangers have passed, floods can introduce various health hazards, including waterborne diseases, mould growth, and mental health challenges.

Floodwaters often carry contaminants such as sewage, animal waste, and industrial chemicals, significantly increasing the risk of infections. Residents should avoid contact with floodwaters to prevent illnesses such as: : This bacterial disease is transmitted through water contaminated by animal urine. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and headaches.

Caused by bacteria found in soil and water, melioidosis can enter the body through cuts or abrasions, leading to severe infections.

Ingesting contaminated water can result in diarrheal diseases,

which are particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations, such as the elderly.

To mitigate these risks, it is essential to wear protective clothing and footwear during cleanup activities and to practice good hygiene.

The damp conditions following a flood create an ideal environment for mould growth, which can lead to respiratory problems, especially for individuals with asthma or allergies. It is crucial to dry out homes and belongings promptly and to use protective equipment when removing mouldy materials.

Experiencing a flood can be

traumatic, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression. The loss of property, displacement, and the challenges of recovery can take a toll on mental well-being. Please touch base with your general practitioner if you are having difficulty. Similarly, check in with your friends and family especially if they have been affected.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council provides resources and updates on disaster management and recovery efforts. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to participate in community recovery initiatives. Natural disasters, such as flooding is devastating, while the physical damage from floods is evident, it must be highlighted the unseen health and mental health toll that take months or years to recover. It is so positive to see so many in the community to come together to support each other in need.

AS 2024 drew to a close, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) looked back with immense gratitude for the unwavering support from donors, sponsors, volunteers, and the wider community. Last year, their collective efforts have been instrumental in helping the Centre grow and continue its mission to make a difference across the Fraser Coast region.

Tanya Stevenson, CEO of HBNC, expressed heartfelt thanks, saying, “Your generosity has enabled us to innovate, expand, and make lasting changes in the lives of those who need it most. It’s a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together.”

In 2024, the HBNC embarked on numerous initiatives aimed at fostering growth, connection, and well-being, with standout projects such as the Youth Events Team Initiative (YETI). This program has provided local youth with vital opportunities to connect, engage,

and thrive. Additionally, the social enterprise The Wandering Teapot has expanded its reach, providing not only delicious food but also offering employment opportunities and supporting community programs.

One of the Centre’s proudest achievements this year is the growth of the Read Bears program; a Year 1 reading initiative that has helped children build confidence and discover the joy of reading. These programs, along with many others, were made possible thanks to the generosity of the community and a shared belief in the power of positive change.

As HBNC continues to support the community, 2024 proved to be a year of remarkable service, with the Centre reaching an astounding 70,000 acts of support. Their programs have focused on providing resources, education, and opportunities for individuals across a wide spectrum of needs, all aimed at improving well-being and

promoting personal growth.

The Centre’s Local Learning Network served 7,896 individuals, offering workshops that empower locals with valuable skills and knowledge for personal and professional development.

For many individuals, access to essential services is a lifeline. HBNC provided over 13,000 trips for older adults and those living with disabilities, ensuring they maintained independence while accessing necessary community services. Additionally, the Centre’s support for families has been crucial, with 1,770 hours dedicated to assisting parents and strengthening family bonds.

Youth mentorship and intervention have been a top priority, with 622 hours dedicated to helping young people through the Youth Mentoring Program. A further 4,385 hours of support were provided to at-risk

youth, offering crucial guidance during pivotal moments in their lives.

The Comfort Kitchen initiative served 4,105 hot meals, ensuring those in need never go hungry. In addition, 5,130 people received tenancy support, providing critical information and advice on housing rights.

Volunteers have been the backbone of HBNC’s programs, contributing over 20,000 hours of their time and ensuring services are delivered with care. The Centre also hosted multicultural events attended by 3,306 individuals, celebrating diversity and fostering inclusivity within the local community.

In addition to providing legal referrals and advice to 4,035 individuals, HBNC worked tirelessly to reduce social isolation. Volunteers

spent 715 hours visiting older individuals in aged care facilities, offering companionship and support to those who might otherwise face loneliness.

In total, 28,436 individuals received critical information, advice, and referrals, furthering HBNC’s commitment to empowering individuals and strengthening families. These numbers are a testament to the power of community-driven support and the meaningful impact it has on lives.

As the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre moves into 2025, it remains excited about continuing its vital work in the community, with the support of its dedicated team and generous contributors. The year ahead promises even more opportunities for growth, change, and a stronger, more connected community.

BRIDGIT Jones (maiden name Howard) has a knack for getting herself into amusing situations, something that’s become part of her charm. Friends often say, “That’s such a Bridget thing to do,” playfully comparing her to the fictional Bridget Jones.

Bridgit believes we all have a little of the beloved character in us.

“I don’t really do silly things anymore, unless I’m in the wrong company,” she jokes. “I’m really good at being misled by the wrong crowd. It’s not my fault.”

Born in Marton, New Zealand, in 1967, Bridgit was adopted by a loving family after their biological daughter died of a brain aneurysm. She also gained a brother who was ten years older. Later the family moved to Tauranga for a fresh start.

At ten, she learned she was adopted, but to Bridgit, her adoptive

mother wasn’t just a parent, she was a best friend. “We laugh so much. I couldn’t have picked a better mum.”

After studying graphics and marketing in Hamilton, Bridgit found her way into advertising, working alongside her father in a furniture and electronics store, before moving to newspapers with the Bay of Plenty Times and managing the advertising for the Katikati Advertiser. However, the relentless pressure of weekly advertising targets took a toll.

Stressed and burnt out, Bridgit’s then-husband, Wayne, suggested a sailing adventure along Australia’s coast. Hesitant at first, she eventually embraced the journey. They bought a yacht and spent six months sailing north.

One terrifying moment remains etched in her memory, a storm in the Whitsundays.

“We shouldn’t have been out there

as winds were gusting 60 knots. We didn’t know if we’d make it.”

After reaching Cairns, they settled into jobs, later returning to Tauranga to build a house, but soon longed for Australia’s warmth. Postcards from sun-soaked friends sealed their decision, and they returned.

Wayne and Bridgit searched for a business but kept coming back to Hervey Bay. “Every time we crested that hill, we thought, ‘Wow, why are we looking anywhere else?”

Settling here in 1998, they bought a fish and chip shop, ironically, the one thing Bridgit had sworn she’d never do. “I had visions of me in slippers, a dressing gown, and a ciggie,” she laughs. Though short-lived, the venture was a stepping stone. Bridgit returned to advertising, working at the Fraser Coast Chronicle for several years.

Wayne and Bridgit started

Streamline Catamarans, building three of Hervey Bay’s whale-watching fleet. When Wayne moved to Fiji to build boats and never returned, Bridgit chose to keep his surname for simplicity.

These days, she works alongside her partner of six years, Paul, at a denture clinic. With a grin, she quips, “I’ve gone from selling ads to manufacturing for dentures!” When she’s not lending her creative touch, she keeps things running smoothly on the admin side.

A few years ago, Bridgit found her biological family through Ancestry.com. A cousin match led to her birth mother’s sister, who had unknowingly lived nearby in New Zealand. She also discovered her birth father and stays in touch with both sides, bonding with biological relatives in Brisbane and Dunedin.

“My birth mother was sent away

when she became pregnant, and her sister never knew about me. It was all very secretive.”

Bridgit frequently visits New Zealand to see her adoptive mother, now 94. The financial strain is tough, but their bond makes every trip worthwhile.

Sadly, the day before our interview, Bridgit’s much loved dog, Jack, passed away at fourteen and a half, leaving an immense void.

Her heartfelt Facebook post read:

“He was my North, my South, my East and West. My working week and my Sunday rest. My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song. I thought that love would last forever, I was wrong. Sleep now, my beautiful boy, your paw print is firmly embedded in my heart.”

Borrowed from Four Weddings and a Funeral, the words captured her grief perfectly.

A new resource for Hervey Bay’s future wellbeing

The Hervey Bay Advertiser is pleased to announce that it successfully secured funding through a grant from the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services as part of the Social Shi Program. This funding has been used to create The Horizon Magazine, a comprehensive four-part feature series to be published as a magazine insert in the Hervey Bay Advertiser throughout 2025.

The vision behind The Horizon Magazine is to serve as a beacon of hope for the Hervey Bay community, o!ering much-needed guidance to individuals seeking a brighter and more stable future. The magazine focuses on a wide range of issues that are critical to the region, speci cally those identi ed as areas of signi cant need. By addressing these pressing challenges, The Horizon Magazine aims to empower local residents, providing them with essential tools and information to improve their lives and wellbeing.

In order to create a meaningful impact, we have partnered with leading local experts in various sectors, including health, mental health, substance abuse, family and domestic violence, employment, and many other key areas. These professionals will contribute insightful articles and columns that address the most urgent challenges facing our community. Additionally, they will o!er practical advice on local pathways to improvement, helping individuals nd the support and resources they need to navigate di cult situations.

The contributions of these experts are integral to the success of the project, which is designed to align closely with the objectives of the Hervey Bay Local Services Plan. By addressing a wide array of social issues, the magazine will connect individuals to local services and organisations that can make a transformative di!erence in their lives. The collaborative e!ort of medical professionals, educators, mental health advocates, and survivors of family and domestic violence has been crucial in shaping the vision for The Horizon Magazine. These conversations revealed a common concern: a signi cant gap in accessible local information for individuals seeking initial intervention and support.

One of the key takeaways from these discussions was the widespread acknowledgment that while national helplines and services are available,

local services are o en under-marketed or inadequately advertised within the community. Feedback indicated that there was no clear “go-to” resource for local residents, nor consistent media coverage that could facilitate a faster, more personalised path to intervention and support. This gap in resources has led to a signi cant disconnect, leaving many individuals unaware of the local services available to them.

The Horizon Magazine seeks to ll this gap by becoming a trusted, easily accessible resource for residents of Hervey Bay. By providing clear, wellorganised information and guidance, the magazine will enable individuals to take the rst steps toward recovery and stability. Furthermore, this publication will not only o!er practical assistance but also provides emotional encouragement, helping people navigate complex challenges and empowering them to regain control over their lives.

The Horizon Magazine aims to be a beacon of hope, bridging the gap between those in need and the local services that can change lives.

The magazine’s content is thoughtfully curated, featuring expertled columns and editorial pieces that cover a wide range of critical social issues. These include mental health, addiction recovery, domestic violence prevention, and more. Through the expert insights and advice o!ered in The Horizon Magazine, we aim to provide our readers with the knowledge and support they need to make informed decisions and move toward positive change. By doing so, we hope to foster a stronger, more resilient community in Hervey Bay, where individuals know they are not alone in their journey toward recovery and wellbeing.

Troy G eltch: Sharing stories, building strength

Everyone has a story! We’ve heard this many times but have we stopped and listened to people’s stories? Or do we feel comfortable in sharing our story? Is there trust that we can feel comfortable to share our deepest experiences that many feel no one is interested.

The Fraser Coast is committed to the power of community—listening, absorbing, comforting, supporting, and ensuring that the experience for those who share their lives with us is a positive one.

‘Everyday Mates’ is an initiative by Fraser Coast Mates for people to share their stories and connect with a local audience that relates to their journey.

“Everyday Mates” aims to give a voice to local individuals who have experienced mental health challenges. This initiative creates a platform for community members to share their personal stories, highlighting the realities of mental health struggles and the journeys towards healing.

Through video features on the Fraser Coast Mates website and social media platforms, “Everyday Mates” seeks to foster understanding, reduce stigma, and build a supportive community by showing that mental health a !ects everyone, regardless of background or circumstance.

By featuring diverse voices from the Fraser Coast, the project emphasise that no one is alone in their experiences and that sharing stories can be a powerful tool for connection and recovery.

Troy Geltch is known well in the local Fraser Coast community for his impressive physical transformation

and sheer determination to push himself to compete in grueling athletic challenges.

He has endured profound trauma throughout his life, including the devastating loss of his older brother, Dayne, who tragically passed away in a car accident when Troy was still a teenager.

As a teenager, his health was clearly not a priority and the news of his brother’s tragic death spiraled his weight to a concerning level that jeopardised his future career of a pilot for the family business.

His ‘Turning Point’ – Hervey Bay parkrun.

Troy arrived at the very rst parkrun for the region with the goal of launching his new health regium. Troy never le his car that morning.

The following week, with the support of his mother, he completed his very rst parkrun. This was life changing.

From being unable to get out of the car at the rst ever Hervey Bay Park Run to competing in marathons, iron mans and more, he has constantly met physical challenges head on following an impressive physical transformation.

His love for running and exercise has taken Troy and his young family across the globe, always giving him another challenge to strive for.

The deep loss of his brother Dane, and his subsequent physical health transformation, barely scratch the surface of this story that is bound to inspire you to put your own mental health rst.

It’s about conversations

Typically, with any walk, there is a “turning point”.

The signi!cance of this de!nition is this popular and bene!cial activity has provided many “turning points” in so many ways.

Hervey Bay has always been recognised for its scenic walks and attractive esplanade. One of the simplest yet most e ective ways to support mental and physical wellbeing is walking.

It’s well recognised walking helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by promoting the release of endorphins, which improve mood and overall mental health.

Add the social interaction that generates one of the most in uential tools for mental health – conversations!

Hervey Bay has experienced unprecedented growth in walking groups none more popular than Men’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay.

Founder of the group, Shane Bradbury, understands that “personal crossroads” feeling as we age and reaching that point “where the zest for active sports begins to clash with the realities of aging, alongside the mounting pressures of family and business commitments.”

“This collective journey of sharing, listening, and moving forward together is a powerful tool for mental resilience and well-being.”

Shane shares that many walkers have expressed how the group’s support has been invaluable, with inspiring stories of individuals recognising and embracing the need for connection.

Members of Men’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay have shared how the group has been a lifeline during di cult times. Whether facing a relationship breakdown, coping with the loss of a loved one, or adjusting to life in a new

community, the group o ers support, friendship, and a reason to keep moving.

Some have even credited the group with encouraging them to visit their GP and address health concerns early. Proving that a simple walk can lead to life-changing conversations.

The ladies could not be outdone and followed the lead by forming Women’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay, creating a space for women to walk, talk, and support each other that now comes together twice a week.

Alicia Wade was part of the inception that has seen numbers grow to over 1,000 members and more than 1,500 followers on their social media.

“There are so many stories… Many want to make new friends and not feel so lonely. Seeing the friendships built and then catch ups out of the walks warms the team’s heart”, say Alicia.

Women’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay has become a powerful community for women, especially as the region experiences an in ux of new residents.

Alicia says “like myself 10 years ago, many women come to the area knowing no one and seek connection. Loneliness, due to various circumstances, is a shared experience among many. “

“Every day, new personal walking milestones are reached—from 1km to 5-6km and even hiking the tracks of K’gari. The sense of empowerment and sisterhood is unmatched, creating lasting friendships and inspiring growth in ways never imagined.”

“The friendships and social connections that form outside of our walks are incredible. I’m witnessing new lifetime friendships being made, and it all starts with that one simple decision to join this group!”, says Alicia.

Both walking groups can be found on Facebook.

The power of community

Fraser Coast Mates was founded on a simple yet powerful principle- no one should struggle alone!

We were formed nearly 8 years ago from the tragic loss of a good mate. His struggles were private, yet his loss was felt deeply by the Fraser Coast community. He was well respected yet we failed to read the signs.

What began as a community-driven response to loss and mental health awareness has now grown into a force for change, fostering connections, awareness, and unbelievable support across the region.

The mental health crisis has touched every community, and the Fraser Coast is no exception. Our region has felt the deep impact of suicide and mental health struggles that is almost unavoidable.

Fraser Coast Mates was created to tackle this issue head-on by building a culture where people feel comfortable reaching out and looking out for one another.

Through initiatives such as fundraising events and awareness campaigns, Fraser Coast Mates works to break the stigma surrounding mental health. Our message is clear - it’s okay to talk, and help is available.

By engaging directly with the community, we create safe spaces where people can share their struggles and access support without fear of judgment.

The term ‘Power of Community’ has a number of meanings to our fantastic committee.

We have felt the strength of the local community with overwhelming support from businesses and individuals being part of events across the region.

The golf days now attract over 350 golfers to the Hervey Bay and Maryborough events, another 200+ ladies attending the Flourish and Bloom lunches on the course, as well as the many volunteers and supporters that come along to support us.

Each year the numbers grow, and the atmosphere supports the sharing of

more stories that elevates the purpose and goals of the day.

Your ‘Community’ also has another meaning, the support of close friends and family should never be underestimated. The ‘Power’ is not measured by numbers, but in the ability to listen, be accessible and compassionate for the feelings you are experiencing.

The ‘Community’ of family and friends can also play a key role in recognising the signs of mental distress and encouraging professional help when needed.

The harsh reality is we are still losing 9 lives a day across Australia. Our Fraser Coast Mates team knows too well the heart crushing loss of loved ones that “our community” wrap our arms around them as we campaign for the Fraser

Coast community to be there for friends and family.

Knowing that someone cares and is willing to stand by you during tough times is where relationships can be solidi!ed and potentially save a life.

Fraser Coast Mates aims to highlight a fundamental truth: when a community stands together, it can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Bullying in our schools: The lasting impact on children’s self-esteem

Bullying is more than just playground scu es or online teasing - it’s a widespread issue with serious consequences for children’s mental and emotional wellbeing. Across the Fraser Coast, reports of bullying are emerging as early as prep, with some children as young as ve experiencing body shaming or social exclusion. By the time they reach primary school, some are even being targeted in online hate groups. The long-term e ects of this behaviour can be devastating, shaping how children see themselves and the world around them.

For many young victims, bullying strips away their con dence and self-worth. Whether it’s verbal insults, physical aggression, or cyber harassment, being constantly belittled can lead children to believe they are not good enough. Over time, this message becomes internalised, leaving them struggling with self-doubt, anxiety, and even depression. Instead of enjoying their childhood, they may withdraw from social interactions, disengage from school and feel trapped in a cycle of fear and insecurity.

The emotional toll of bullying can also manifest in physical symptoms. Children under chronic stress o en experience headaches, stomach aches, di culty sleeping, and other health concerns. Some may develop unhealthy coping mechanisms or struggle with long-term emotional distress well into their teenage years and adulthood.

The e ects of bullying don’t stop at the individual level - they ripple through families, schools, and communities. When bullying becomes normalised, it sets a dangerous precedent for how children treat one another and how society responds to con ict. This is why addressing the issue early is critical. Schools, parents, and the broader community must take proactive steps to encourage environments of respect, kindness, and inclusion.

Education is one of the most powerful tools in breaking the cycle of bullying. By educating students about the reasons behind bullying, we can also help those who engage in this behaviour re ect on their actions and better understand the root causes.

e impact of domestic and family violence on our community

Many children who bully others do so because of deeper, unresolved issues. Some struggle with low self-esteem, a lack of emotional support, or di culties at home. Others may have been bullied themselves and use aggression as a way to regain control or avoid becoming a target. Emotional regulation challenges, poor social skills, and a lack of positive role models can also contribute to bullying behaviour.

Peer pressure and the need for social acceptance o en play a role as well, leading some children to bully in an attempt to t in. Additionally, frequent exposure to aggressive behaviourwhether at home, in social circles, or in the media - can normalise harmful

Children under chronic stress o en experience headaches, stomach aches, di culty sleeping, and other health concerns.

actions.

By addressing these root causes, schools and communities can guide children toward developing empathy, self-awareness, and healthier ways to express their emotions. Parents also play a key role in supporting their children by recognising signs of distress, teaching resilience, and encouraging positive self-talk. Through education and early intervention, we can create a safer, more inclusive environment for all children.

Bullying is not just a phase or “sorting out the pecking order” - it has lifelong consequences and, in severe cases, even suicide. As a community, we have a responsibility to stand against it and advocate for a culture where every child feels safe, valued, and respected.

Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) is not just a private matter; it is a pervasive issue that deeply a ects individuals, families, and the wider community.

On the Fraser Coast and across Australia, DFV continues to have devastating consequences, with long-term social, economic, and psychological impacts. Addressing this crisis requires awareness, intervention, and a community-driven response.

Domestic and Family Violence encompasses physical, emotional, psychological, nancial, and sexual abuse within intimate or familial relationships.

Statistics reveal that one in four women and one in thirteen men in Australia have experienced violence by an intimate partner. Children who witness or experience violence are also profoundly a ected, o en carrying the trauma into adulthood.

Shine Bright Mental Health is a local organisation that understands the complex connections between DFV and mental health. They provide guidance and care for individuals navigating the impacts of domestic violence while also supporting them through the challenges of mental health recovery.

Chief Executive O cer, Chloe Brown, understands the term “breaking the silence”.

“For me, domestic violence was not something that happened suddenly— it crept in gradually, disguised as control, manipulation, and emotional abuse before escalating into physical violence a er the birth of my son in 2018. The overwhelming nancial responsibilities—mortgage, cars, childcare, extracurricular activities— kept me tethered to that life”, says Chloe.

“My ex-husband’s struggles with alcohol abuse were a signi cant factor in the cycle of violence, creating an unpredictable and volatile environment that made it even harder to leave.”

“On the outside, I was a working professional, a mother, someone who appeared to have it all together. But behind closed doors, I was navigating a reality that so many women in similar positions face: balancing a career, raising young children, and managing a household, all while enduring the trauma of domestic violence.”

“It wasn’t until two years a er my daughter’s birth that fate took over. This time, the decision was taken out of my hands. Police intervened, responding to an incident that shattered any remaining illusions I had. I was suddenly forced to face my reality—the one I had fought so hard to deny.”

“What people don’t o en talk about is what happens a er you leave—the long, grueling journey of holding someone accountable for the assaults you endured.”

With over a decade of experience in both acute and community mental health, Chloe understands trauma, recovery, and the psychological complexities of abuse.

Today, Chloe is the Director of Shine Bright Mental Health and a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse, leading a service designed to support those who need it most.

“My experience has fueled my passion to ensure endures are not just believed but empowered to heal and rebuild without fear,” says Chloe

“Through Shine Bright, I am committed to making positive changes in the way we support recovery, which is why we provide access to groups like SMART Recovery in a way that feels safe, non-clinical, and focused on empowerment.”

Marissa Rose: A paramedic’s journey to healing and hope

Our health workers in our community can never be shown enough appreciation for the invaluable support they provide, making the Fraser Coast community incredibly fortunate.

Paramedics are o$en the rst on the scene in moments of crisis, witnessing the raw reality of trauma, loss, and emergency care. While they dedicate their lives to saving others, their own mental health journeys can be deeply a ected by the emotional toll of their work.

The Turning Point Project recognises the unique challenges faced by paramedics, highlighting the importance of mental resilience, peer support, and accessible professional resources. By sharing their stories and providing pathways to support, this initiative aims to break the stigma around rst responders’ mental health and ensure they receive the care they so sel essly provide to others.

‘Everyday Mates’, is an initiative by Fraser Coast Mates for people to share their mental health journeys relevant to the local community.

Fraser Coast Mates recognises the importance of our health workers and discovered an inspiring story that has faced the challenges of their role while navigating life experiences with family, relationships and career.

Marissa Rose, an advanced care paramedic that knows all too well what the pressure of a high stakes career can have on your mental health.

While Marissa was at the height of her paramedic career, she was also battling with severe mental health challenges before nding a range

of tools that helped her to overcome many ups and downs, including suicidal thoughts.

Her story is self-told where Marissa has navigated a range of intense highs and lows particularly within a number of key relationships in her life.

Everyone has a story and Marissa shares her journey through front line work during the covid era, loss of relationships, dealing with childhood trauma and much more.

Marissa’s journey has been shaped by both professional challenges and past traumas, reaching a breaking point in 2020. Struggling with burnout and the weight of PTSD, she made the brave decision to step away and focus on healing. The community-connecting power of hope

“All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and somebody who believes in them.”

Iwant to start this column with a question that may be a little uncomfortable to answer: does Hervey Bay believe in its young people?

I’m sure each of you, individually, would answer this question with a resounding “yes”.

No doubt you would think about the young people in your life.

Your children, grandchildren and family friends – of course you believe in them, and want the best for them.

But let’s broaden the conversation out to the whole of our community.

What does Hervey Bay think of its young people?

What messages and attitudes about themselves do they hear as they move through their daily lives?

Are those messages and attitudes giving them reason to believe that the future looks bright for them in this region?

Are they lled with hope?

Hope is an incredibly underrated tool in community building.

It’s what keeps us going when disaster strikes and things get hard.

It’s the sometimes tiny but still shining light at the end of even the longest and darkest tunnel.

In a world where they are faced with rising cost of living, housing and employment challenges, the all-consuming online world with its many pitfalls and pressures, and so much more, what are we doing as a community to give our young people hope?

Unfortunately, when we asked them, the answers were bleak.

As part of HBNC’s 2023 State of the Youth Report, 72 local young people were asked how they felt they and their peers were perceived in the community.

Words like “lazy”, “disrespectful”, “criminals” and “disappointing” came through loud and clear.

Hardly the stu hope is made of.

Young people were also asked what they were concerned about in our community, with crime, mental health,

Breaking free

Regional communities in Queensland face many of the same challenges as the rest of Australia, and the Fraser Coast is no exception— particularly when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction.

Addiction is a complex challenge that a ects individuals, families, and communities across the Fraser Coast. While substance use may start as a way to cope with stress, trauma, or social pressures, it can quickly become a cycle that feels impossible to break.

The Turning Point Project is dedicated to shedding light on the realities of addiction while o ering pathways to hope and recovery.

cost of living and housing featuring prominently.

What’s particularly telling about this is young people are, by their own admission, just as worried about many of the issues they are pilloried for on social media and in the news.

Make no mistake – criminal behaviour is unacceptable for anyone, including young people.

However, as the vast majority of our young people are far more likely to be victims, not perpetrators of crime, shouldn’t they be encouraged and empowered to be part of the solution, rather than treated with suspicion and disdain?

We need to give our young people reason to believe that Hervey Bay o ers a ful lling life in a community they can be a real part of.

Cost of living a ects us all, but it’s our young people who represent the future of this community.

Shouldn’t they be consulted on how to make life in Hervey Bay more a ordable, sustainable and appealing for the long-term?

We need to give our young people reason to believe that Hervey Bay o ers a ful lling life in a community they can be a real part of.

Right now, however, the prevailing message seems to be, “there’s nothing here for you”.

It’s time we changed that narrative – not with blind optimism, but with genuine, community-connecting hope.

Addiction is not simply a lack of willpower—it is a medical condition that alters brain function, impacting decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Many individuals struggling with substance abuse also

experience underlying mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Without proper support, the cycle of addiction can be incredibly di cult to escape.

The e ects of addiction extend beyond the individual. Families are o en le grappling with emotional pain, nancial strain, and fractured relationships.

However, with the right interventions, recovery is possible, and individuals can rebuild their lives.

Bayside Transformations plays a vital role in addressing addiction on the Fraser Coast, o ering a structured, faith-based rehabilitation program for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol dependency. Through a combination of counseling, life skills training, and community support, the program empowers participants to break free from addiction and rebuild their lives, like Alan Ling.

Alan’s Story

“A few years ago, I experienced one of the most challenging periods of my life. Following a turbulent divorce, I became homeless and developed a methamphetamine addiction as I attempted to self-medicate for PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I lost hope and I was feeling powerless yet expressing my anger unhealthily. On Christmas Day of that year, I reached a point where I believed I could no longer endure the pain, which led me to attempt suicide”, says Alan Ling.

“With the guidance of my faith, I discovered the Transformations Program. Over a few years, I committed myself to addressing my behaviours, acknowledging anger, my mental health challenges, and receiving appropriate medical treatment. Although the journey was both demanding and confronting, through determination and persistence, I successfully graduated from the Bayside Transformations Program in 2019.”

“Subsequently, I reengaged with the therapeutic community by working as a Case Manager for three years while simultaneously pursuing a Bachelor of Counselling. The skills I acquired and the experiences I gained during this time have signi cantly enriched my life.”

Today, I work full-time as a Case Manager, assisting individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and severe mental health challenges in understanding that recovery is possible. I have remarried and am a proud grandparent to ve grandchildren, with another on the way. As I enter the nal semester of my degree, I continue to manage my mental health with proper medication, and I feel vibrant, balanced, and empowered.

Alan’s story is testament to Bayside Transformations that provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals can heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Medicare Urgent Care Clinic Marks First Year

Hervey Bay residents have been bene ting from a fully bulk-billed Medicare Urgent Care Clinic (Medicare UCC) since its opening last year. The clinic has provided accessible urgent medical care for non-lifethreatening conditions, easing pressure on Hervey Bay Hospital and improving healthcare access for the community.

Since opening, the Hervey Bay Medicare UCC has treated thousands of patients for conditions such as infections, rashes, cuts, and minor fractures. Operating seven days a week with extended hours, the clinic ensures that patients receive care without needing an appointment. This initiative is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to strengthening the Medicare system and ensuring timely healthcare access.

Easing Pressure on Local Hospitals

Statistics from its rst year of operation show a signi cant impact, with a noticeable reduction in nonurgent emergency department presentations at Hervey Bay Hospital. Before the clinic opened, over 40 per cent of emergency visits were for semi-urgent or non-urgent conditions.

The Medicare UCC has provided an alternative for these patients, allowing hospital resources to focus on more critical cases.

Federal Assistant Minister for Health, Emma McBride, highlighted the clinic’s success:

“The Hervey Bay Medicare Urgent Care Clinic has delivered bulk-billed urgent care for locals and helped reduce pressure on the Hervey Bay Hospital. This service has been a gamechanger for the community.”

Since the national rollout of Medicare UCCs in mid-2023, more than 500,000 patients have received care across the country. In Queensland alone, over 36,500 presentations have occurred at these clinics, with 30 per cent of visits on weekends and one in four a er 5pm on weekdays. This demonstrates the demand for accessible a er-hours healthcare services.

Expanding Access to Urgent Care in Queensland

The Hervey Bay clinic is part of a growing network of Medicare UCCs

across Queensland, including locations in Bundaberg, Cairns South, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan (Browns Plains), Northside, Murrumba Downs, Rockhampton, South Brisbane, Toowoomba, and Townsville. These clinics provide essential services, ensuring regional and rural areas have better access to timely medical care.

To further support healthcare in regional, rural, and remote areas, additional funding continues to be allocated to Medicare UCCs to maintain sta ng levels across extended hours. More investment in workforce training and retention is also underway to ensure high-quality care continues to be delivered.

Former Member for Hervey Bay, Adrian Tantari, praised the clinic’s ongoing success:

“This has been a game-changer for free healthcare in Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast. As the fastest-growing region in the Wide Bay, having a sevenday-a-week, extended-hours service has been exactly what our community needed. It provides peace of mind, knowing medical help is available when it’s needed most.”

Continued Impact on the Community

The Medicare UCC in Hervey Bay has proven to be a vital part of the region’s healthcare system, o ering a convenient, cost-free option for residents requiring urgent medical attention. With bulk billing and extended operating hours, the clinic has signi cantly improved healthcare access for thousands of families across the Fraser Coast.

Patients have praised the service for its e ciency and convenience, particularly those who would have otherwise faced long wait times at the hospital emergency department. The clinic also works closely with local GPs and healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.

As it enters its second year, the clinic remains committed to providing quality healthcare and reducing strain on hospital emergency services, ensuring Hervey Bay residents receive timely and e cient medical care. Future expansions and continued investment in the region’s healthcare services will further enhance accessibility and patient outcomes.

Do I need to attend regular General Practitioner (GP)?

Attending a regular general practice is essential for maintaining health and well-being. A general practice is o en the rst point of contact for medical concerns, no matter how big or small. Establishing a relationship with a trusted general practice ensures improved health management, early disease detection, and a more personalised approach to medical care.

Continuity of Care

Research demonstrates that one of the most signi cant bene ts of having a regular GP is continuity of care. When you see the same doctor or medical practice consistently, they develop an in-depth understanding of your medical history, lifestyle, and health concerns. This familiarity allows provision of more accurate diagnoses, e ective monitoring of conditions, and tailored treatments. Additionally, this minimises duplication of service and minimises cost to the health system.

Preventative Health Measures

Attending a regular GP improves preventative healthcare. They can provide routine health checks, screenings, and vaccinations to prevent illnesses before they become serious. Regular check-ups can detect conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, or certain cancers. GPs o er advice on healthy lifestyle choices, including diet, exercise, and stress management.

Early Diagnosis and Management

Chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease require long term management. Having a regular GP means you receive consistent monitoring and treatment, reducing the likelihood of complications. Early detection of chronic conditions allows for improved and individualised management strategies, which can improve quality of life and prevent hospitalisation.

Coordinated and Holistic Care

General practices collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as specialists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, and mental health practitioners. Your GP can coordinate referrals and ensure all aspects of your healthcare are managed e ectively. This comprehensive approach ensures that all your medical needs are considered and addressed.

Establishing a strong relationship with a trusted GP is one of the best steps you can take towards a healthier and more ful lling life.

Improved Health Outcomes

Studies have shown that individuals who have a regular GP tend to have better overall health outcomes. Regular check-ups, early interventions, and continuous monitoring lead to reduced hospital visits, lower medical costs, and improved long-term wellbeing.

In conclusion, having a regular general practice is essential for maintaining health. It ensures continuity of care, promotes preventative health measures, facilitates early diagnosis, and provides personalised and coordinated healthcare. Establishing a strong relationship with a trusted GP is one of the best steps you can take towards a healthier and more ful lling life.

Finding clarity amidst chaos: The impact of health on our future

Busy. There is no denying we are all busy. While it can o en feel like an egodriven requirement to stay constantly engaged, it is, in fact, the reality we face: life is fast and relentless. In the midst of our packed schedules and to-do lists, how o en do we take the time to pause? I invite you to imagine a scenario: if you could sit in silence, blocking out all the noise from the world and from your mind, what would your life look like in its best state? What would you need to add, what needs to be removed, and most importantly, what is truly essential to you?

In this quest for clarity, we must confront some uncomfortable truths: the choices we make about our health today signi cantly shape our futures. Consider how stress, processed foods, clutter, ca eine consumption, insu cient sleep, phone addiction, sedentary lifestyles, and substance use can weigh down not just our current well-being but also our long-term health prospects. Each of these factors silently siphons away our energy and clarity, making it di cult to envision and achieve our most ful lling lives.

Let’s start with stress. Living in an increasingly fast-paced world, we o en prioritise work and productivity over our mental health. The relentless pressure can lead to burnout, anxiety, and chronic health issues. To combat this, we need to learn to create boundaries—saying no to commitments and activities that don’t serve our wellbeing or that merely add greater stress. If we truly want to envision our best selves, we must rst learn to manage stress through mindfulness practices and self-care routines.

Next, consider nutrition. In an era where processed food is ubiquitous and convenience o en trumps quality, what are we doing to our bodies?

Understanding the importance of incorporating protein, unprocessed carbohydrates, and good fats is essential for maintaining optimal health. These foods contribute to muscle growth, enhanced energy levels, mental clarity, cellular health, and overall focus. Would you choose to prioritise a nourishing diet if it meant a clearer mind and more energy for your passions?

Physical activity is another essential aspect. Our sedentary lives, dominated by screens, are stealing our vitality. We o en take for granted what our bodies can do—until they can’t. Engaging in cardiovascular and strength training not

only promotes heart health and muscle growth but also releases endorphins, li ing our mood and improving sleep quality. Imagine if you made a commitment to move more—whether through exercise, walking, or simply being more active throughout the day. A body in motion can lead to a more positive outlook on life and longevity.

As you envision your ideal life, ask yourself: Is your current job or career choice aligned with your values? Are you pursuing further studies that ignite your passion? Engaging in lifelong learning can stimulate growth and open doors to new opportunities. Perhaps you’ve felt the tug to help others— volunteering your time in service can be incredibly rewarding and foster a sense of community. Our contemporary way of life o en centres around individual ful lment, with an emphasis on instant grati cation that fosters self-absorption. Yet, stepping out to serve others can break this cycle, helping to alleviate feelings of depression and fostering deeper connections.

The future we aspire to—balancing health, service, community, and personal growth— begins with the choices we make today.

In a world rife with distractions and unhealthy habits, it is more crucial than ever to take deliberate steps towards a healthier lifestyle. It’s near impossible to drop everything and start anew; these changes take time. It’s important not to approach this process with guilt or fear, but rather to gradually release all that saturates you from being your best, healthiest, happiest self. The future we aspire to—balancing health, service, community, and personal growth— begins with the choices we make today. Let’s take this journey together, not just for ourselves, but for the health of our communities and our future.

Lawrie Beacham Living life to the fullest

Afamous quote can relate to many in our Hervey Bay.

By sharing their stories, seniors not only preserve history but also create meaningful relationships that strengthen the fabric of the community.

Fraser Coast Mates has launched a series of videos titled ‘Everyday Mates’ for people to share their stories and connect with a local audience that relates to many.

Everyone has a unique story, and Lawrie Beacham is a well respected local businessman that has built a life and successful businesses in Hervey Bay for over 30 years.

Lawrie’s connection to mental health began at an early age where his father Jack worked in mental health wards in Regional Victoria. His respect for someone’s mental health and the serious consideration for your overall health was openly discussed in his

early formative years.

His father worked in institutions “but didn’t believe in being institutionalised”.

His love of cars was also discovered at an early age that would lead to his involvement with car rally’s including the famous London to Sydney rally.

“They were some of my most happiest times”, says Lawrie.

He also embarked on a journey in the automotive recycling sector, leading to specialises in Jeep vehicles, focusing on models sold in Australia from 1994 onwards. Jeeepart Recyclers was formed in 1996 when the Beacham family relocated from Victoria to Hervey Bay.

His wife Joy and sons, Zane and Shannon, continue the legacy of the family business as Lawrie’s reputation as a leader in the industry is well regarded as far as Detroit City.

His love for Hervey Bay began when visiting in the 1980’s. In his travels he would make sure he attended the weekly Rotary Club meetings. His connection with Rotary has been maintained for nearly 40 years including his involvement with Rotary Club of Hervey Bay Sunrise, this showcases his dedication to community service.

Lawrie openly discusses some low times in his life that his strength in friendships has been con rmed when in times of need, his mates are there for him including his lifelong friend Jim.

“We could sit in a car for hours without a word said……..we are that comfortable with each other”, Lawrie says.

Lawrie Beacham has lived a life in many years and continues to be there for mates.

Our future workforce

The transition from school to the workforce can feel overwhelming, yet it’s one of the most signi!cant decisions young people will make.

It marks the beginning of their journey toward independence, !nancial stability, and personal growth. With countless career paths, training opportunities, and industries to explore, making the right choice can be both exciting and challenging.

Fraser Coast has long been recognised as a region of high unemployment but the changing economy and growth is seeing greater opportunity than ever before.

The Fraser Coast Career Pathways Program (FCCPP) is a Queensland Government School to Work initiative designed to help students transition from school into careers, further education, or training.

FCCPP strengthens career education in schools by connecting students with key local industries, including manufacturing, construction, engineering, and healthcare across the Fraser Coast.

By bridging the gap between education and employment, FCCPP empowers young people to build meaningful careers and contribute to the future of the Fraser Coast workforce.

The impact on can be a “Turning Point” for many youth and school leavers. For Hervey Bay 17 year old Dylan, he needed the change to the workforce.

“School’s not for me. I mostly go to see my friends. I don’t like sitting at a desk and reading through schoolwork,” he admits.

So, it wasn’t surprising that university didn’t seem like the right path for Dylan. But he was certain about one thing—he didn’t just want “a job.”

It was at this year’s Fraser Coast

Community innovation: The power of grassroots projects

TIndustry and Careers Showcase where Dylan crossed paths with Kirsty, Project O cer of Fraser Coast Career Pathways. A er a friendly chat about the career pathways available locally, Kirsty assured Dylan she’d stay in touch.

“I love woodworking and talked to Kirsty about maybe getting into the building industry,” Dylan recalls.

Armed with her extensive apprenticeship knowledge and local industry contacts, Kirsty made a few phone calls and identi!ed several leads for Dylan to explore. But when she asked him, “Have you considered cabinet making?” This was Dylan’s light bulb moment. “I was so happy when she called and suggested cabinet making!” he said.

Kirsty arranged for Dylan to meet with a local cabinet-making business, Staunton’s Cabinets and Joinery, based on the Fraser Coast. A er a little preinterview pep talk, Dylan’s interview delivered what he was hoping for a handshake and an apprenticeship!

Kirsty supported both Dylan and Staunton’s throughout the process, taking care of the necessary paperwork so Dylan could hit the ground running in his cabinetry apprenticeship as smoothly as possible.

“Kirsty knew exactly what to do—she was amazing at organising everything,” Dylan said.

Now, two months into his four-year apprenticeship, Dylan is thriving. He’s focused, engaged, and loving the chance to both earn and learn. His advice to other young people?

“Take your mum to career expos! You’ll discover there’s heaps more than just university, and maybe you’ll meet someone like Kirsty who can really change your life.”

Dylan is now on track to be a fully quali!ed cabinet maker in four years thanks to Rob at Staunton’s Cabinets and Joinery and FCCPP.

he importance of community-driven innovation was the focal point of a discussion between Christian Mercury, Operations Manager at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC), and CEO Tanya Stevenson. The conversation, featured on HBNC’s Connect & Learn podcast, explored how grassroots initiatives can drive meaningful change within communities.

Understanding Community Innovation

When asked what innovation means in a community setting, Tanya emphasised that it occurs when grassroots projects emerge to address social issues.

“You’re looking at ideas that create a better community for people to live in,” she explained.

Tanya highlighted the need for communities to move beyond traditional funding models and to make use of existing resources. She pointed out that post-COVID, it’s more important than ever to support initiatives that rely on people power rather than just !nancial aid.

Rethinking Funding Models

Funding is o en a challenge for not-for-pro!t organisations, with many heavily reliant on government grants.

Tanya cited research from the Tamarack Institute in Canada, which underscores the importance of community-led solutions.

“People who experience issues !rsthand o en have the best ideas for solutions,” Tanya noted. “Rather than waiting on government funding and long tender processes, communities can harness local resources to drive change.”

One of HBNC’s initiatives, Social Innovation Pitch Nights, has been instrumental in launching grassroots projects. Over the past three years, around 45 projects have been pitched, with approximately 75% successfully implemented.

Success Stories: The Read Bears Project

One of the standout projects from the pitch nights is the Read Bears initiative. The Australian Early Development Census revealed that !ve-year-olds in Hervey Bay face triple the social disadvantage of their Queensland peers, particularly in literacy. Rather than waiting for more government funding, HBNC explored alternative solutions.

The Read Bears project provides

Year 1 students with a knitted bear to encourage reading at home. “It’s a simple concept—children read to their Read Bear, making literacy development more engaging,” Tanya explained.

Since its inception, over 2,000 Read Bears have been distributed, and the project has expanded to Bundaberg. It has also fostered intergenerational connections, with elderly volunteers knitting the bears.

“It’s a win-win,” said Tanya. “The elderly participants !nd a sense of purpose, while children bene!t from improved reading skills.”

The Neighbourhood Hive: A Safe Space for Young People

Another innovative project born from community needs is the Neighbourhood Hive. Recognising that many local youths lack safe spaces,

People who experience issues !rsthand o en have the best ideas for solutions.

HBNC partnered with businesses and community organisations to create a dedicated hub. The space, launched in May last year, provides a welcoming environment for young people to learn, create, and socialise.

“We didn’t wait for government intervention,” Tanya said. “Instead, we worked with businesses and local services to build a space designed by and for young people.”

Encouraging Community Involvement

For those with ideas to improve the community, Tanya encourages them to reach out to HBNC.

HBNC also fosters internal innovation through its ‘Mystery Award’, represented by a gira e—a symbol of “sticking your neck out.” Employees are recognised for innovative ideas that drive positive change.

Finding light in the spotlight: Mental health benefts of joining Z-PAC theatre

For many in Hervey Bay, Z-PAC Theatre is more than just a stage—it’s a sanctuary. This volunteerrun community theatre has long been a place where people come together not just to perform, but to heal, connect, and !nd purpose.

Community theatre has long been recognised for its power to upli , o ering participants a creative outlet, social engagement, and a sense of belonging. At Z-PAC Theatre, these bene!ts are ampli!ed, as volunteers and performers of all ages !nd themselves part of something much larger than just a production.

Z-PAC Theatre president Katie O’Neill knows !rsthand the impact theatre can have on mental health, “I !rst heard about Z-PAC Theatre via a pamphlet in my mailbox. I hadn’t lived here very long, I was raising two young children with precious little help from anyone, and I was socially isolated and working through some very di cult personal circumstances,” she recalls. “In short, I needed a break.”

For Katie and many others, Z-PAC became more than a place to enjoy theatre—it became a home.

“When I walked through Z-PAC’s doors, I felt like I’d been welcomed into someone’s home for the most wonderful soirée. Everyone was kind, the show was fabulous, and the quality of the production was not amateur at all. I fell immediately and hopelessly in love with the whole place.”

This sense of belonging is at the heart of Z-PAC’s impact on mental well-being. Studies have shown that participation in the arts can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Theatre in particular fosters social interaction, encourages self-expression, and builds con!dence—all crucial elements for maintaining mental health.

Many Z-PAC members share similar stories. Some have struggled with personal loss, others have faced social isolation, and some have battled anxiety or depression. Living with a disability shouldn’t mean living without opportunity.

Yet, across the Fraser Coast and beyond, individuals with disabilities continue to face barriers in accessing essential services, employment, and social inclusion. As the demand for disability support grows, so does the need for a more connected and responsive sector—one that not only provides care but also empowers individuals to thrive.

In 2024, Life Choice put the call out to local people with a disability for the opportunity to trial for a range of roles within the organisation. This approach ensured people with a disability were given the chance to try a role before committing to employment, and the approach took away a lot of the pressure of gaining employment that can be felt for many.

Katie speaks passionately about the theatre’s role beyond just entertainment, “Z-PAC is absolutely about putting on great shows and celebrating the arts, but we are also about bringing together like minds, building relationships, creating community, and empowering people to learn new skills and have a go. The theatre may be old, but it’s not just a building—it’s a home and a place where family comes together to create a little bit of magic.”

Beyond the stage, volunteers play a crucial role in creating this welcoming environment. Whether it’s set construction, costume creation, front-of-house hospitality, marketing and promotions or backstage support, there’s a place for everyone at Z-PAC. These opportunities provide not just an

Resilience, determination, and innovation—these are just a few qualities that de!ne the disability sector. Across the Fraser Coast and beyond, individuals living with disabilities, their families, and support networks continuously push boundaries, proving that true inclusion is not just about accessibility but about empowerment.

One of the most inspiring aspects of the disability sector is the way people turn challenges into opportunities.

Whether it’s an individual overcoming barriers to employment, an organisation championing inclusive practices, or a community banding together to improve access to services, these stories remind us of the power of perseverance.
