THE UPCOMING federal election is set to be fiercely contested on two critical issues: the cost of living and the housing crisis. Like every other regional city in Australia, Hervey Bay is deeply affected by these challenges.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced a policy allowing first-home buyers to access up to $50,000 of their superannuation for a home deposit. This policy could be a decisive factor in the election outcome. While it may appear populist, its implications are significant and farreaching.

The policy is likely to resonate with a broad spectrum of voters. Young Australians struggling to enter the property market will see it as a lifeline, while parents who have financially supported their children’s homeownership aspirations—the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’—may also welcome the relief. In regions like Hervey Bay, where housing affordability remains a major concern, this initiative could provide critical support.

The Coalition believes property investment can yield greater long-term benefits than traditional superannuation investments. By allowing first-home buyers to use a portion of their superannuation for a home deposit, the policy aims to fast-track homeownership.

Given the historical capital appreciation of property—particularly in high-growth markets like Hervey Bay—this approach may provide stronger returns than some superannuation funds. More importantly, it offers immediate housing security and a tangible investment in the future.

This policy challenges Labor’s concerns that it undermines long-term financial stability by prioritising short-term homeownership gains. Recent legislative changes in Queensland further support this initiative. The abolition of stamp duty for first-home buyers of new builds and land—alongside existing exemptions for established homes—creates additional incentives

for aspiring homeowners. These factors strengthen the Coalition’s position heading into the election.

Hervey Bay has experienced significant population growth in recent years, driven by its affordability and coastal lifestyle. However, this growth has intensified housing demand, increasing property values and rental prices, making it difficult for young residents to enter the market. A combination of limited housing supply, rapid population expansion, and stagnant wages relative to housing costs has worsened the affordability crisis.

The Coalition’s superannuation policy could be a key mechanism for youth retention in Hervey Bay—an issue highlighted by the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association. By enabling earlier access to homeownership, young professionals and families are more likely to stay in the region, bolstering the local economy and fostering longterm community stability. Homeownership is a driver of regional prosperity, ensuring a stable workforce and continued economic growth.

Nationally, first-home ownership patterns have shifted over the past decade. The average age of first-home buyers has risen, reflecting the increasing difficulty of saving for a deposit amid rising property prices. This trend underscores the need for policies that provide financial flexibility, enabling younger Australians to achieve homeownership sooner.

Industry leaders have voiced support for the Coalition’s proposal. Jocelyn Martin, Managing Director of the Housing Industry Association, stated: ‘This policy acknowledges the reality that for many Australians, saving for a deposit is the greatest hurdle to entering the housing market.’ Such endorsements highlight the policy’s potential to remove one of the most significant barriers for prospective first-home buyers.

However, Tom Panos, Australia’s top real estate coach and News Corp columnist, warns of historical precedents that suggest caution. He points to New Zealand’s KiwiSaver HomeStart scheme, introduced in 2010—a policy similar to Dutton’s proposal. Since its inception, house prices in New Zealand surged by 134%, outpacing growth in the previous two decades and exceeding Australian price increases by 1.5 times. First-home buyers were particularly hard hit, assuming substantial debts to compete in the escalated market.

Additionally, under the New Zealand model, the proportion of first-home buyers taking out loans with a loan-to-value ratio (LVR) above 80% tripled, raising concerns about financial stability.

The voting public increasingly demands decisive leadership that challenges the status quo.

The ‘Trump effect’ has demonstrated that strong, fearless leadership resonates with the public, even when it disrupts traditional political norms.

At the same time, younger generations are frustrated with government overreach, particularly regarding personal freedoms and financial decisions. Many are tired of being told how to live their lives and manage their money, including their superannuation. People want a government that respects their independence rather than one that dictates their choices.

Ultimately, allowing first-home buyers access to their superannuation presents both opportunities and risks. It offers a potential solution to the housing affordability crisis, particularly in highdemand regions like Hervey Bay, and is likely to appeal to voters seeking tangible solutions to economic challenges. In my view, this policy will be the decisive factor in shaping the outcome of the 2025 Federal Election.

The prospect of the impending Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Planning Scheme Review fills one with a sense of foreboding.

It is inevitable the Council’s Planning Department will have considerable influence over the framing of new building requirements, notably height restrictions on the Esplanade.

Recent events demonstrate a keen appetite within the Planning Department to accommodate the Development Industry’s obsession with going up.

This complaisance was clearly demonstrated in the comments provided by the Assessment Manager to the Council in the lead up to the July decision whether to approve the Development Application for the 21 storey Hervey Bay Sheraton Resort on the Esplanade at Torquay.

“The incorporation of requirements for the use of semi mature plantings will assist with an immediate buffering of the properties to the west, noting that a code compliant development not subject to this level of assessment would have similar levels of interface when viewed from the directly adjoining properties. As previously mentioned in this report, the amenity outcomes (albeit to overbearing nature)

are very consistent at eye level to that experienced by developments that adjoin compliant built forms.”

It appears that the Assessment Manager is arguing, quite bizarrely, that as far as the impact to the properties to the west of the proposed development, it really doesn’t make any difference if the development is 21 storeys, or six storeys as prescribed in our current Planning Scheme.

This is one of many instances within the Planning Department’s report to Council where extraordinary justifications are tendered for the unprecedented approval.

One fears that if the same persuasive narrative is employed by the Planning Department in preliminary scoping of our revised Planning Scheme, we will see necessary objectivity and sensible analysis surrendered.

What is clear is that the basis of Council’s approval of the Hervey Bay Sheraton Resort needs a proper legal scrutiny, thereby giving clarity to Planning Scheme Review considerations, lest we end up living in North Gold Coast. It is important therefore that the current Appeal in the Planning and Environment Court against Council’s approval by Wildlife Queensland Fraser Coast Branch is successful. Please support their fundraising efforts to cover legals costs.

Upon a recent visit to the Torquay Caravan Park (I am a local), I was advised by an employee of the park that it is the Councils intent to shut down and bulldoze the park in 2027, to create more usable public areas.

The Esplanade is well over 10 kms long with lots of open areas, seating, toilets and access to the beach.

Surely that’s plenty of space. The local Councillor, who says he is opposed to the park’s destruction, has approached Torquay Caravan Park, requesting the Park management to ask their guests to collect receipts for all local purchases, which will be sent to the Councillors office. This should show the amount the park guests are spending at our local shops, which I believe would be substantial.

My friend, who is currently staying at the park, took it upon himself, when in these shops, to mention about the Councils intent to shut the park in 2027. Not one business owner had heard of this.

Hervey Bay is a wonderful place to live and visit, yet the Council seems intent on stuffing it up, by closing a well-used caravan park that brings visitors, and their money, to our area.

Fraser Coast Regional Council has adopted new flood mapping based on the latest scientific data to improve safety, guide development, and inform residents about flood risks.

Covering six key catchment areas, the updated maps will help residents and developers make informed decisions on flood risks.

The information will be available online, through interactive mapping, and via property flood certificates.

Development and Planning spokesperson Cr Denis Chapman emphasised that the update enhances flood

risk management using the latest science.

The maps will replace existing ones in the Fraser Coast Planning Scheme via a Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI), effective from 7 March 2025 for up to two years.

Residents can access the updated maps on the Council’s official website.

THE 50-METRE pool at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre will be closed from 26 March to 1 May for electrical upgrades, underground pipe repairs and essential maintenance.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Director Strategy, Community and Development Gerard Carlyon said the temporary closure was necessary to ensure the next stage of upgrades could progress safely and efficiently.

“The Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre is being upgraded to meet modern standards and continue serving our community for decades to come,” he said.

“Work on stage 1B began last month and is expected to finish by mid-year. Unfortunately, this means some temporary disruptions, including the

closure of the 50-metre pool from late March to early May.

“During this time, contractors will repair underground pipes, upgrade electrical cabling and lights, fill gaps under the pool, drain and clean the pool, and maintain the surrounding area.

“By completing essential maintenance alongside the upgrades, we can minimise future disruptions to the community.”

Mr Carlyon said the lagoon pool would remain closed until the stage 1B upgrades were complete, and some pathways were restricted to ensure public safety.

“We appreciate the community’s patience while this work is carried out,” he said.

“Council is committed to effectively managing and

maintaining our assets and planning for the future, and this project is a key part of that.”

The stage 1B upgrades include a new interactive splash pad, activity tower and wet play equipment in the lagoon pool, new shade structures and floodlights for the 50-metre pool, and landscaping improvements.

These works follow the stage 1A upgrades, completed in 2024, which focused on improving the 25-metre pool area, plant room and service yard.

Mr Carlyon said Council was grateful for the Queensland Government’s $3.5 million contribution towards the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre upgrades through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies program.

PRIMARY school students across the Fraser Coast have a unique chance to make their mark on the Hervey Bay Hospital Expansion by naming the towering crane now on-site.

The ‘Name the Crane’ competition, launched by Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS), encourages creativity and community involvement in the major upgrade.

WBHHS Chief Executive Debbie Carroll emphasised the significance of the initiative, stating, “The 37-metre-tall hammerhead tower crane is helping expand healthcare in Hervey Bay, and it’s fitting that local children help name it.”

The hospital expansion includes a new medical inpatient unit, the relocation of the intensive care unit, and a rooftop helipad for direct patient transfers.

“These upgrades will improve patient care, reduce wait times, and enhance emergency services,” Carroll said.

WBHHS Project Director Alison Smith expressed excitement about the competition and the creativity of young participants.

“The crane will be a key part of the hospital for a year, lifting materials like scaffolding,

steel, and the new helipad,” Smith said.

“This competition lets local kids engage with the project in a fun way.”

Contractor Apollo Property has donated prizes for the winning entry, and the selected name will be displayed on a banner for all to see.

Students are encouraged to submit imaginative names that reflect the crane’s role in

the hospital expansion and its connection to health and community.

The Hervey Bay Hospital Expansion is part of the Capacity Expansion Program, delivered by Health Infrastructure Queensland in partnership with WBHHS. With local children involved, the crane’s name will embody the community’s spirit and imagination.

THE REDEVELOPMENT

of the Pialba Caravan Park will resume, while plans will be prepared to explore alternative uses for the Torquay Caravan Park site, including as an open space with basic facilities or a premium playground and recreational hub.

At its recent meeting, Fraser Coast Regional Council considered a report on the future of the two Councilowned caravan parks, following a decision late last year to temporarily pause the redevelopment to allow for further review.

Cr Zane O’Keefe said the Council-owned beachfront caravan parks have been operating for decades and need upgrades to meet modern standards and visitor expectations.

“The Scarness Caravan Park redevelopment was completed last year, and the first stage

of improvements at Burrum Heads finished earlier this year, with work now underway on the next stage,” he said.

“The Pialba Caravan Park also has aging infrastructure that needs urgent upgrades. After reviewing cost-saving options, it was clear major reductions weren’t possible without lowering the quality of the park. That’s why we’re moving forward with the redevelopment using the current design.”

Council will also develop concept plans for the Torquay site before seeking community feedback on its future.

“We are looking at two alternative options for Torquay – an open space with basic facilities or a premium playground and recreational hub,” Cr Lachlan Cosgrove said.

“We’ll be asking the community for their thoughts

before making a final decision on whether to go ahead with one of these options, a hybrid option containing some elements of both, or continue with the Torquay Caravan Park redevelopment.

“While the infrastructure at Torquay will eventually need upgrades, it is in better condition than Pialba, meaning there is less urgency to act immediately.”

The next steps include preparing layout plans and cost estimates for the potential alternative uses of the Torquay Caravan Park site, followed by a formal public consultation process.

“This is about making sure these sites provide the best value and experience for our community and visitors now and into the future,” Cr O’Keefe said.

Coastal Wastewater are your local Specialists in everything wastewater and welcome your queries on how best to look after your wastewater requirements.

Home Sewage Treatment Plant (HSTP), require regular maintenance to ensure they operate in a safe and effective manner. Poorly maintained and malfunctioning systems can impact public health, the environment and property value. Failure to comply with the mandatory servicing can result in a breach of the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018. And can put your family’s health at risk.

Questions from a property manager on “How do I best look after my clients’ homes that are currently on our rent role that utilize a Septic tank or wastewater treatment plant?”

CWWS have always recommended pump outs between tenants. This will ensure any foreign debris in the tank from the current tenant/s are not the previous tenants waste and any call outs and charges associated with blockages or smells caused by pads, tampons, condoms etc can be billed to the tenant rather than the owner. Or the new tenant. All tenants are different, the way in which one lives can vastly impact on the environment in which we exist.

And while we can make suggestion to products and protocol for living at a property with a wastewater treatment plant or a septic system, we cannot ensure they will be followed. Eg – in a perfect world all tenants would respect the fact that no foreign objects are to be fushed down the toilet, put down drains eg pads, tampons, condoms, rags, socks, nappies, wipes etc. But unfortunately, many still do this, this causes unnecessary spending for the homeowner to rectify the system. These are the type of objects we fnd very often when servicing the different systems. Fats, grease and oils are also problematic to treatment systems and should never be put down the sink.

3. Repairs required are actioned in a timely matter so not to cause more wear and tear on the system.

4. Ensure overload is not placed on the system eg: 3-bedroom home with 10 people will most likely overload the system.

5. Pump outs are facilitated when foreign objects are located eg needles, women’s products etc and following the mandatory guideline when

Being a big-ticket item to replace in a household not to mention an essential one – everyone needs a fushing toilet!

We would suggest that you

1. Make the tenants aware by providing the correct information on the system type – if you’re not sure we offer an Identifcation report.

2. Ensure the mandatory servicing is taking place by a qualifed licensed & insured technician. Eg quarterly, annual.

is clearly identifed to reduce risk of new tenants driving on it/parking vehicles on it/putting children’s play equipment on it etc. Most people like to do the right thing, but they need to be informed to enable good intentions to prevail.

not identifed in a system, keeping in mind this will depend on the household wastewater usage. (This is another check at the time of a service it is called sludge level).

Most system have two components the actual treatment plant which is a tank or two tanks either concrete or poly and then an area were the effuent ( treated wastewater) is pumped or gravity fed too. This could be underground not visible at all to the tenant or sprinklers above ground visible.

This area requires maintenance from the homeowner/tenant it must be keep low, mowed so that the system can work. If the grass is long ponding accurses. This area must not be driven over by anything heavier than small ride on mower, as this will cause damage to the pipes unground and can become costly to rectify.

By ensuring the wastewater disposal area

If it is below ground and there is a risk that it COULD be driven over then suggest to homeowner that permanent markers be placed and/or barriers to prevent this from occurring and as a property manager clearly communicate this to the tenant.

The homeowner/tenant are responsible for reporting any alarms to their service provider when they go off, as these provide the frst point of warning before the drain in the home blocks up and backs up.

A lot of tenants aren’t aware of this or just ignore them until the time the service is due, this in turn puts the system at risk of not adequate treating the household wastewater, fooding and/or doing additional damage to the system/home.

XAVIER Catholic College, Hervey Bay, is celebrating a remarkable academic achievement, with its 2024 graduates excelling across multiple subjects and securing top ATAR scores. The school is proud to announce that seven individual subject scores exceeded 98, highlighting the dedication and hard work of students and staff alike. Adding to the celebration, 20 percent of graduates achieved an ATAR of 90 or above, with two students earning an exceptional ATAR of over 98. Their success has earned them recognition in Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) inaugural Student Excellence Awards, which honour outstanding academic performance across BCE’s 36 secondary and Prep to Year 12 schools.

Xavier Catholic College

Principal Simon Dash expressed his pride in the students and their

achievements, emphasising the school’s commitment to overcoming the challenges often faced by regional students.

“Students in regional communities sometimes feel that higher education is out of reach due to distance or family history,” he said. “At Xavier, we are proving that university is not just possible—it’s an exciting opportunity within reach for all our students.”

The school’s DUX, who achieved an impressive ATAR of 98.45, is set to pursue a Bachelor and Master of Engineering at the University of Queensland. Meanwhile, other graduates are stepping into fields such as Occupational Therapy, Education, Nursing, Psychology, Law, and various trades.

“Our students are following their dreams with confidence, and I couldn’t be prouder,” Dash said.

The College’s commitment to academic excellence has been strengthened by an innovative learning framework tailored to support student growth. The adoption of the Ignatian Pedagogical Framework has played a crucial role in fostering independent learning and selfmotivation.

Additionally, Xavier’s partnership with ALeda, an organisation providing coaching and mentoring for staff, has enhanced teaching practices, ensuring students receive the best possible education.

“Our students have worked incredibly hard, and these results reflect the dedication of not just them, but also their families and our staff,” Dash said.

Encouraging students to embrace every opportunity, he added, “The world is yours to explore—your potential is limitless.”

EVERY day we become one day older. As we age, our immune system weakens, making older adults more vulnerable to serious infections. Immunisation is a vital tool in protecting us from preventable diseases, reducing the risk of hospitalisation and maintaining our quality of life. In Australia, the National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides some immunisations at no cost. There are others, where a fee will be applicable. It is important to have that discussion with your General Practitioner

• Vaccines stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that recognise and fight off harmful viruses or bacteria. Unlike natural infections, vaccines introduce a harmless form of the pathogen (or a genetic blueprint for an immune response) without causing illness. This allows the body to develop immunity safely.

As we transition from the warmer months into autumn, it will be a good opportunity to review the following immunisations which may be due:

• The flu can lead to severe complications,

including pneumonia or hospitalisation.

• An annual influenza immunisation will provide protection, and this has been made available at no cost for Queenslanders.

• Protects against pneumococcal disease, a leading cause of pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and meningitis.

• Prevents shingles, a painful nerve condition caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus.

• RSV is a common virus that can cause severe respiratory infections, particularly in older adults. This can lead to complications like

pneumonia and exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma or COPD.

• Covid boosters are recommended, especially for older adults, as immunity can wane over time. All adults over the age of seventy-five should consider having a booster every 6 months

• A booster is recommended to maintain protection against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) every 10 years. Due to the period between immunisations, we tend to forget about the booster. By staying up to date with vaccinations you can prevent severe illness from infectious diseases and hospitalisation. It is important to have that conversation with your GP to see which immunisations are due.

THE 2025 KHANACROSS season roared to life last weekend behind the Maryborough Speedway, as 26 competitors battled wet and muddy conditions in the opening round.

Hosted by the Hervey Bay Motorsport Association, the event saw drivers test their skills on a treacherous track that dried out as the weekend progressed.

The morning started with cautious driving as competitors navigated the slick mud. Barry Cook, piloting a Subaru WRX, took full advantage of his all-wheel drive setup, setting the early pace and building a comfortable lead.

Despite a smaller-thanusual field, competitors made the most of the conditions, completing an impressive ten runs—well above the average. With a diverse range of cars, including two-wheel-drive,

four-wheel-drive, and turbocharged vehicles across four classes, each competitor found moments to shine.

Shane Logan in a front-wheel-drive

Peugeot 206 struggled in the wet early on but capitalised on the drying track to climb the leaderboard.

By the afternoon, Logan had surged ahead in the under2300cc class and claimed second place overall, trailing only Cook. Krystle Power, driving an AWD Subaru Liberty, was hot on their heels in third.

The next day delivered perfect racing conditions with blue skies and a dry track, allowing for a furious pace.

Junior drivers Piper Power and Mitchell Spencer impressed, posting times that rivalled more seasoned

competitors.

As the day progressed, Logan dominated, winning six of the seven Sunday runs. However, Cook’s early lead proved too much to overcome, securing him the overall victory. Power maintained consistency to round out the podium in third place.

Round 2 kicks off on April 5-6 behind the Maryborough Speedway. Spectators can attend for free, with canteen facilities available. Event entry is open to drivers aged 12 and over.

SKIN + WAX: A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE IN SKINCARE

Celebrating 12 Years of Success

This year marks a major milestone for Skin + Wax—its 12th birthday. Over the past decade, the clinic has grown from a two-person operation into a thriving business, delivering exceptional skincare services to a loyal clientele. Tammy’s unwavering dedication, combined with the hard work of her team, has solidified Skin + Wax as a leader in the industry.

A Vision Brought to Life

Twelve years ago, Tammy embarked on a bold mission—to redefine skincare in Hervey Bay. Armed with little more than a credit card and an unwavering passion, she founded Skin + Wax, a small two-person salon with big ambitions. Today, it has evolved into a multi-award-winning clinic, delivering unparalleled results-driven skin treatments while creating an exceptional client experience.

Nestled in Pialba Place, the clinic has grown into an elite team of eight highly skilled therapists, all sharing the same commitment to transforming skincare into an experience. What started as an innovative brow bar and paramedical skin clinic has since become an industry leader, earning national recognition, including being a finalist in the 2020 Small Business Champion Awards.

The Skin + Wax Experience: More Than Just Skincare

Every aspect of the Skin + Wax experience is designed to be seamless, professional, and results-oriented:

• Personalised Consultations: Advanced skin diagnostics, including the Observe Skin Scanner, allow therapists to develop customised treatment plans tailored to individual needs.

• Bespoke Treatments: The clinic incorporates the latest in LED therapy, chemical peels, and skin rejuvenation.

Circadia: The Ultimate Skincare Partner

When it comes to skincare brands, Circadia was the perfect fit for Skin + Wax. After observing the brand for five years, Tammy was convinced that Circadia’s science-backed formulations and emphasis on skin’s natural biological rhythms aligned perfectly with her clinic’s philosophy.

Circadia’s chronobiology-based approach ensures that treatments work in sync with the body’s natural renewal cycles. Some of the clinic’s most sought-after Circadia treatments and products include:

• Oxygen RX Professional Treatment – Perfect for sensitive and acne-prone skin, delivering incredible results.

• Micro-Exfoliating Honey Cleanser – A gentle yet effective everyday cleanser.

• Light Day Sunscreen – A lightweight, protective formula adored by clients.

Unlike other brands, Circadia restricts online sales, ensuring that only trained professionals can prescribe and provide these highquality skincare solutions. This exclusive approach guarantees clients receive expert guidance tailored to their unique skin concerns.

Join us for a celebration on March 20th! Enjoy a free facial from Circadia Skincare with the purchase of any three skincare products.

Leading the Way in Wellness: Totally Derma & Mineralist Cosmetics

Beyond skincare treatments, Skin + Wax is expanding its wellness offerings as the exclusive Australian distributor of Totally Derma Regenerative Collagen Supplements. This revolutionary product is science-backed and doctor-recommended, supporting skin, hair, nails, joints, and gut health—a perfect complement to the clinic’s results-driven approach.

Additionally, Skin + Wax is enhancing its mineral cosmetics line, Mineralist Cosmetics, which aligns with the clinic’s commitment to clean beauty. These Australian-made, cruelty-free products offer flawless coverage while nourishing and protecting the skin, providing clients with a holistic beauty experience.

Looking to the Future: Expanding Excellence

The next 12 months hold exciting plans for Skin + Wax, including:

• Menopause Coaching: Providing specialised skin treatments tailored for hormonal changes.

• Oncology Skin Treatments: Introducing a new range of cancer-safe skincare solutions.

• Technology Upgrades: Expanding treatment options with HiFu and HydraFacial technologies.

• Industry Engagement: Entering the ABIA Awards and attending the Beauty Expo to stay ahead in the field.

Tammy is also furthering her expertise by enrolling in a Bachelor of Nursing, reinforcing her commitment to holistic, science-backed skincare. Additionally, she is securing her laser license to continue upskilling her team and expanding treatment capabilities.

A Clinic Defined by Passion & Innovation

Twelve years on, Skin + Wax is more than just a skincare clinic—it is a symbol of transformation, expertise, and industry leadership. With a dedicated team, cutting-edge treatments, and a steadfast commitment to excellence, it continues to push boundaries in professional skincare and beauty.

Tammy’s unwavering vision has turned a small business dream into an empire, and the journey is far from over. The future of Skin + Wax is bright, and its legacy in the industry is only just beginning.

AMY Friesen’s life reads like a script from a movie, packed with adventure, creativity, and a passion for storytelling. Born in Gympie and raised between Imbil and Brisbane, Amy’s adventurous spirit was sparked early by her father’s outdoor adventures.

At school, she loved geography which in turn created a passion for travel and awakened an interest in global impact. She later studied Anthropology and Archaeology, Amy jokingly says she wanted to be Indiana Jones, but discovered acting along the way. Film became her creative outlet, opening a new world of storytelling and meaningful connections.

Amy’s first job was at BaskinRobbins, where she was fired at 14 for being too generous with the scoops. Devastated, she moved on to

Macca’s.

At 20, Amy landed her first ad for KFC, playing a beachgoer having fun with the crowd, and remembers that the burgers had to look perfect before the actors could eat them.

Amy says, “The whole set experience was really unique and at the time was very exciting.”

“Like many aspiring actors, I juggled hospitality jobs around uni and auditions, I did the waitress wanna be actress well!”

Over the years, Amy has appeared in short films and TV commercials, been a presenter, and done voiceover work, highlighting her versatility both on-screen and behind the camera. Her passion for performance intertwined with her love for travel, taking her across the globe. At 21, she lived in LA, attended acting school, and landed small film roles.

Later she spent a decade in Canada, where she met her filmmaker husband, Kevin in Vancouver.

Kevin’s humour and bold personality kept things interesting, but their friendship deepened when they teamed up for a documentary in Mozambique. With his background in acting and stunts, their shared love for film brought them closer.

Romance sparked in the African savanna—though Kevin briefly panicked and broke up with her upon arrival! Luckily, by that same night, they were back together, Amy laughs. The pair also lived in Cambodia with their kids, blending their passions for culture, humanitarian work, and filmmaking. where they shot another documentary, being able to merge their passions has been an incredible blessing.

Amy and Kevin have been married for 15 years and have four beautiful kids.

“Kevin keeps me in stitches. Our bond is built on friendship, laughter, and the ability to forgive—it’s the secret to weathering life’s challenges together.”

Now settled in Hervey Bay, Amy is channelling her love for film and community into Screen Fraser Coast, an organisation set to shape the region’s cinematic future.

At 42, Amy co-chairs Screen Fraser Coast, a volunteer-led nonprofit dedicated to growing the region’s film industry. Inspired by Screen Illawarra’s success, she envisioned a similar hub for Hervey Bay. With Fraser Coast Films already making its mark, Screen Fraser Coast adds another layer of support, helping to shape a thriving future for local

filmmaking.

Screen Fraser Coast will act as a facilitator, building a database of talent, from actors to editors, scriptwriters, producers, directors and everything in between, and supporting local filmmakers. The goal? To create a sustainable industry, attract regional and global productions, and provide mentorship so local youth can develop their careers without leaving the region. It has now been two and a half years since Amy and Kevin moved to Hervey Bay.

Amy says, “It’s the perfect place to raise a family, beautiful, accessible, and surrounded by nature. With K’gari nearby and stunning beaches at our doorstep, we could not love it more! We are both excited to see this next chapter of our lives play out.”

The competitive edge in real estate

Jai is a valuable member of the Platinum Property sales team. His background in elite sports and the NRL has instilled in him a strong appreciation for teamwork, meticulous planning, and hard work—qualities that translate seamlessly into the real estate industry. Jai's natural passion for real estate, combined with his unwavering commitment and energy, ensures he achieves the best possible results for his clients.

Jai's innovative marketing techniques incorporate industry-leading technology with social media platforms and worldclass professional videography. He and his production team leave nothing to chance when preparing and presenting your property for sale. As a dedicated people person, Jai prides himself on honesty, transparent communication, and achieving the best possible sale price. This is evident through his performance results to date, with over 50 sold properties in just 15 months on the Fraser Coast totaling in excess of $35,000,000.

"Mero and I share a background in rugby league. It’s a game that constantly evolves, forcing players to adapt and improve. That same mentality carries over into the property market. You can’t a ord to stay stagnant— you have to stay ahead of the competition and embrace new and innovative marketing strategies. Technology, electronic and social

media platforms play a huge role in selling your home for the best price these days," Jai said.

"Gone are the days of simply placing an advert in the local newspaper. That’s something I’ve really noticed about Guy and the Platinum

Property team over the past five months. He’s open to collaborating new marketing ideas into working strategies. Many of these new techniques are then implemented into our

marketing schedule for the benefit of our customers."

"This is reflected in the way he’s evolved his own business model over the past 25 years here on the Fraser Coast; from bringing the Beach House Hotel to town all those years ago under his directorship, to building a family owned and operated real estate agency with ethics and I’m grateful to be part of it," Jai commented.

"Since joining Platinum Property in October last year, the culture has been incredible. No one is above or below anyone else—everyone is treated as equal. We all have jobs to do and each of us play our individual part. It reminds me of my time at Melbourne Storm under the leadership and mentorship of Craig Bellamy." Jai said.

Guy and I have always maintained our friendship. Originally, I considered working with him, but the trip to Maryborough wasn't ideal. Last year, while training together at Allied Fitness under the guidance of Ali Bennett, Guy told me about his plan to open a second o"ce in Hervey Bay. That's when I knew—it was where I wanted to be. Not just for the opportunity, but to be part of a fresh and award winning brand with a positive culture toward family and purpose. A place where we celebrate wins and success, where people’s achievements are recognized and where the team supports one another, inside and outside o"ce hours.

PLATINUM PROPERTY IS OPENING ITS SECOND OFFICE IN SCARNESS - MAY 2025

Market overview

The Fraser Coast property market is experiencing high demand, directly reflecting our region’s growing population and popularity.

Hervey Bay stands as one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regional centres, while Maryborough and its surrounding coastal suburbs o er a ordability in an increasingly competitive housing market.

As Platinum Property Principal and longterm Fraser Coast resident Guy Meredith notes, “It’s simple supply and demand.”

The desirable coastal lifestyle continues to drive property price upward and limit rental vacancies.

The median sale price in Maryborough has reached $416,000, with an average of 44 days on the market. In Pialba, the median sale price is $638,000, marking a 17% increase from last year and an average of 45 days on the market.

The property market in regional QLD has grown 76.3% in 5 years; which has increased household equity for many homeowners here on the Fraser Coast.

“This substantial increase in market value

has encouraged many residents to take advantage and sell their homes at a considerable profit whilst downsizing with no CGT ramifications,” Guy said.

“The record development boom and vibrant property market is creating employment and growing the local economy. However, federal, state and local government funding is essential at this unprecedented time on the Fraser Coast,” Guy emphasizes.

“Growth brings pressure on infrastructure, as well as amenities and services. You can’t have one without the other.”
